Looking objectively, you can see why the Korean car manufacturers are doing well. Relatively their cars for each segment offer good value for money, warranty and look modern. Compare this to a JLR / German 7 seater it’s a bargain (and probably won’t break). Good review Ped, keep up the good work.
I bought a 2010 Santa Fe 2.2 just for towing, I didn't go looking for one, it was just there. It looks OK from some angles but it will never win a beauty contest. That aside, it drives so much better than I ever expected and I find myself using it out of preference. At 146k miles it's still quiet, frugal, dependable and comfortable. This has made me and my wife think more about buying a more modern version. They feel well screwed together and the fit n finish excellent. We are averaging 37mpg which is not bad for a large 4x4 truck.
Looks like they’ve got this market sewn up then. Unless you’re someone who’s intent on brand snobbery, this appears to be a very well thought out and practical family car. Definitely agree about the light interior, makes a huge difference.
Picked my magnetic grey ultimate Santa-fe up 2 weeks ago... Can't fault it... Best car I've bought to date. Not seen another on the road yet so it's getting loads of attention.
Great vid Pete. That back end reminds me a lot of the old '90s SsangYong Musso... Not a huge fan of that particular angle, but otherwise looks v Land Rover Defender-esque and very cool. 👍 (Oh, and that drone morning shot was class 👌)
Looked at one of these a week ago at a dealer whilst having our Kona serviced and was very impressed. We have had a 2007 Tucson and 2011 & 2017 Santa Fe's - all of which were used as tow cars for caravans which probably what most were purchased for using the great 2.2 diesel R engine and this is the trick they have missed with this new one by only using a 1.6 petrol as the base unit and woefully low towing capacity. The out going Santa Fe with its 1.6 petrol and dct gearbox are not big sellers, you could get a 2.2 diesel but only in the lowest trim spec (still great spec compared to other OEMs) but coupled to the DCT. Our Kona is the GT AWD with DCT and there is a page in the handbook on how to drive DCT without it going into safety mode! Now towing with a 2021 XC90 Diesel MH. Probably our first and last XC90 as they have dropped the diesel option.
Know that road well Pete. Good food in Y Talbot in Tregaron if you’re ever up there again. And the walk around Gwernffrwd Dinas is simply stunning in Spring.
I watched your video and liked the camping scenario. I have very recently bought a 2024 Santa Fe here in Australia and I absolute love driving this vehicle. I was surprised to see the UK having a plug in model. In Australia our only option is the hybrid ( no plug in) and later this year I believe we will have the gasoline only variant as well. One feature (2actually) the Australian Calligraphy model has is 2 sunroofs the front one is fully electric with fully retractable glass, with the rear sunroof being a fixed closed glass with electric retractable inner panel. The only way to really understand how brilliant these cars (SUVs) are is to physically get in and drive it. Ita also a little known fact the the windscreen and both passenger and drivers windows are a special acoustic glass. The quietness of interiors is amazing for a vehicle with a petrol engine. I can’t tell when the engine is on apart from the dashboard display showing what power train is being used. Even with petrol and EV powering the vehicle it’s amazing. It lets the 12 speaker Bose sound system really perform. One last little bit of info. I don’t know if the Uk variant has this, but the Australian vehicle has a form of black box recorder installed. In the event of a major crash the police can retrieve a lot of info. So if you are the responsible driver in an accident this feature might just be your best friend with police and probably the insurance company. If you are the bad driver in a crash I’d be hoping the cops don’t find out about the cars black box. Seriously, as you know because you drove the Santa Fe Caligraphy, it’s a fabulous vehicle with absolutely every bell and whistle currently possible.
Thanks for the review. Great. One point to the backmirrow. You can switch from Monitor Mode to a normal standart Mirrow with a switch on the Mirrow. ;-)
I'm a real scenery fan. Where was that 'view' you ended up at, it was gorgeous. Definitely a possible road trip destination. Liked the car, not a fan of the colour. Shame I don't need something that size. The drone shots were pretty awesome Pete.👍
I enjoyed the review! American viewer here. I love the new Santa Fe. Very brawny and LR Defender with some G-Wagon elements. But the American market is so critical about the styling. Especially the rear design. Americans are just never satisfied.
I have the xrt I love it. I love the calligraphy and how it has all the goodies. I prefer the xrt, but god I wish they blacked out the interior like in calligraphy for the xrt
Really nice video review of the Santa Fe. With the design being a simple box design, you know what is actually works and Hyundai and made it looks somewhat cool. On your model having a pan roof and or lighter seat fabric would be better but that green one…oh my gosh😍
Bold design, but looks like a “ Cut n shunt “ disco front with Renault Espace rear. It problem is towing~ couldn’t pull a skin off a rice pudding!. As always an excellent review.
agree on the exterior styling - looks good up to about the rear door handles...rear portion seems just to make the seat/capacity work - might look better as a shorter 4/5 seater.
I test drove a 2024 calligraphy the other day and was intrigued by the idea of this mirror. Personally I found the image to be a bit out of focus. Maybe, as you suggested, it was my eyes trying to focus as they would normally but couldn’t. I’ll be taking delivery of one next week and I’ll see if I will adjust to it over time.
You probably need reading glasses to use it in focus, which I don’t really understand. Otherwise it should be fitted with an adjustment to focus similar to nearly all camera viewfinders which have ‘diopter’ adjusters.
@@hedydd2 I guess I’ll have time to figure it out, my salesman just called to let me know the Santa Fe he said was coming in was a ‘24, not a ‘25 that he told me. So, it’s off to continue looking.
Great video, usual great level of detail. A really good car but seems just a bit too big for a daily. The phev is definitely the route to go. Think quality versus spec seems good and demonstrates Hyundai continuing to show the way.
Very good video Pete. Could this be our next Hyundai Hybrid after our current Tucson? It could be although it is a little too big, we don’t need the extra row of seats (that went out years ago with our old Voyager) but it is a stunning vehicle. The 4x4 option is a real plus. I’m wondering if they’ll do a LR Defender and produce a short wheel base version….😁
Definitely got Judge Dredd vibes going on. My 7-seat 3-year old XC90 T8 has over 100 bhp more so I can't help feel this is a nod to those who want a EV9 but don't want to stretch that far.
just a quick one, the rear view mirror has two different modes. It has the camera mode and then there a mirror mode, so if the camera does hurt your eyes you can change it to the mirror
Nice review, agree with you on the back, let’s the overall design down a bit, prefer the lighter interior but that bronze paint on your car looked excellent
I drove past a car from the 90s, forget what it was, maybe an old vauxhall and I swear it looked like dinky toy..but probably back in 98 it looked a decent size car compared to old fiestas and corsas etc.. cars are massive these days! And yet we still complain about car parking spaces being too small lol
I've owned a 2018 model year, Mk3 face-lifted manual Santa Fe from new and it does everything we need. It's great for a road trip to the Lakes or Highlands, spacious and reliable. I hated Mk4 and found Mk5 just bonkers. Shame, really. Was hoping for something more like an X5 or X7. This is just a Land Rover Ofender.
Ooh, having never experienced one like that, I'd never thought before about how badly a high rear view "mirror" would work with varifocals if it's just a screen.
Love the EV9 and thought this would be a good alternative until you said no BEV🙁 Great video in a great location however. I like your balanced reviews and even if you dont like something you don't proceed to slag it off, professional.
You might want to rent the Chevy Suburban next time you visit the states. Cargo volume behind the 3rd row is more than what the Santa Fe has with the 3rd row folded. :)
Very enjoyable video thanks you very much I have to say I think the defender rear end looks a bit better not too sure about the curves on this on the back. Regarding the mirror being a screen in the Land Rover pop products you can flick it to normal mirror and then camera mode which I think just brilliant I was quite surprised how low the indicators were on the bumper
Nice review Ped... I'll have to wait for specs on the Plug in hybrid to find out if it is CCS charging (i.e. faster charging on a relatively small battery compared to a BEV) and what speed does it go upto on electric only mode. I have a relatively short commute, 10 miles on Motorway... some Hybrids automatically go to petrol above say 50mph which would not suit me. Pity there isn't a BEV option as per the sister car, Kia's EV9... or perhaps that is to come later?
Llyn Breeanneh. Not sure how to show the pronunciation of double-L but it’s closely related to ‘th’ as in ‘thought’ and like in ‘Lynne’ but with the Welsh Ll [which is one alphabet character]. Dyfi is pronounced as Dovey. It’s a great pity that they don’t offer the 2.2 diesel hybrid as offered on the Sorento, on this model. With the eight speed DCT it would be a winner for me as a former Sorento owner. I prefer the diesel for its torque, better fuel economy with greater range on a tankful of fuel and because I have a home 2500 litre fuel station for convenience. I would buy one tomorrow with that spec rather than the still great Sorento.
Have to question a 1.6 GDI engine in a car of that size, electrified or not. Given Hyundai issues with GDI. I get they need to make every car fuel efficient from day 1, thank you EU but where will this £50k car be in 10 years time, with 100k miles on it. Is that planet efficient 🤔
Another great informative video. I like the looks, I think it is a very clever design that will impress all the yummy mummies who hanker after a LR Defender. TBH it probably meets 90% of what most families would need for a Defender at almost half the cost. Ok it is not super fast nor will it have the off road capability of the Land Rover but if anything it is more practical. I don’t find the rear end offensive as I dislike the rear mounted spare wheel on the Defender. A traditional tailgate makes for easier loading in most situations. I have never driven a car with a rear view mirror camera but I know that Peter’s criticism is shared by many. What I cannot understand is why Hyundai did not install a mirror like on the Renault Megane E-Tech which the driver can switch between a traditional rear view mirror and a camera (to give a wider vision). I suspect the entry level trim and engine variant will be the best buy because at less than £47k it looks to be an awful lot of car for the money.
the thing is... this is usable PHEV AND 7 seater.. I think only XC90 gives you that option (and ofc Kia). Yes, I would like to have 60 miles od EV range which would cover 90% of my daily trips, but they I guess it would be 5 seater only. I still think that could be a great option for dog lovers, or paddleboarders, people who need space, but not exactly additional seats. fantastic car. you are correct, green paint with bright interior is the way to go.
Looks good 👍. Front end a bit too American looking for my taste , agree with you Pete the green with light interior and the alloys best colour match 👍👍👍
I like that car and yes I agree with you on the white cars alloys and the need for a pan roof. It looks a little like a squatter version of Defender 110 on the side profile and similar to the early pictures of the Discovery 6. With regards the matte paint, my eMTB has matte paint and one of the local to me Detailing suppliers (Angelwax) near Glasgow Airport has a shampoo, Quick Detailer & a wax for matte paint which I use on my bike giving excellent results. With regards pricing I think it is on the mark especially if the new Discovery 6 is to be £85k then this being £30k cheaper it is a bit of a bargain. All in all I am very impressed.
I totally agree with your criticism of electronic rear view mirrors. This is a fix for something that is not broken. I had a Subaru EV for a weekend and i thought my eye sight was defective. !!! and it was mildly painful for that fraction of a second to refocus. Horrible. Thankfully it could revert to a mirror. Dont know if that car gives you that choice. Be a deal breaker for me if you cant.
Picking up on your comments re the digital mirror. I suspect things would be even worse if you had your varifocals as in order to focus on the mirror you would be tilting your head up towards the roof in order to look through the lower (near focus) part of the lenses. As so often, just because technology means they can do something. It doesn't mean they should. Also a mirror can't really go wrong.
Nice review but not to keen on the hybrid 1.6l - Diesel Santa Fe was a great towing car and general all rounder with engine lasting 250k kms or more.. In A/NZ market Diesel was the number one seller given torque, towing capacity and overall fuel efficiency.. Will be interesting to see what the sales look like.. Considering a new/ex demo Sorrento GT line Diesel 4x4 but lots of competition now.. In addition the new road user charges model in NZ for PHEV has pretty much killed that type of power train !!
Would like to have seen the 3rd row seats for space, as I imagine it would be good. I have the new top line E Power 4WD Xtrail with the 7 seat option which we have used with 6 adults on board. It was the 2 smallest (my wife 5’3 and friends wife same size) who got into the rear most seats, but on a journey of an hour to our destination it was noted to be fine. Having that flexibility saved the 2 other cars from finding parking etc so I am a convert. Oh and Ped I have sold my Alpine and ordered the new Mini Cooper S (2.0 petrol)as a more useable daily fun car. Had one back in 2009 so be interesting to see how it compares. 😊
Steve I agree - the lighter interior with the pan roof looks way better than the coal hole version Ped was driving - check out House of Cars for the green one review.
Badge snobbery is changing there are so many Kia’s and Hyundais on the road. I run bangers by choice and I would love one of these, except for satin paint?..
Looks positively sick in this brown and in green colour as well. Seen it live. It is very big and boxy, but it does have an appeal of utility and practicality. I've heard you saying that the plug-in has a 253hp engine. That is combined ICE+electric, isn't it?
Hello Peter! That is a good car…too big for my needs but perfect for an adventurous family and vastly less than the Defender! The styling is good but a bit weak on the back as you say. I hate flat paint and brown does it no favours but the green with light interior sorts that plus add a sunroof and sorted! PHEV is the best answer so far…my RRSport has exceeded all I expected so that is the best choice so far. Wales…is great but a wet night might get cold lying in there! Hyundai will sell all it can make…now make one Discovery Sport size and that will frighten JLR which they need to happen! Stay safe…watch out for bears! 😃😃😃Richard
The back end design is the problem for me. If the light clusters were higher up, I think it would be more aesthetically pleasing., apart from that a very nice car I wouldn't mind owning, as long as I didn't have to follow someone driving the same vehicle.
Looks great from the front and side but not sure about the rear in fact it’s down right ugly from the rear and it will age badly,! Hyundai have come on so much of late pity they over design all the time so making there last 4 year old cars dated, I guess it’s to sell more, ultimately it’s consumerism at its worst, ideally we should be keeping our cars for a long time and not using up natural resources but a lass it’s the sell sell world we live in,, Great review 👌A1.
Manufactures putting Satin paint finish on cars is out of order in my opinion as there are a nightmare to maintain and can only be repainted, if you get any scratches even light ones, its as bad as diamond cut wheels which cost more to repair if you kerb them that are on most cars now. As far as looks think there trying to copy elements of old land Rovers and the new Toyota Land Cruiser which in my opinion is far better looking then this Santa Fe. Personally I don't like any of there newer model designs EV or ICE there very fussy and will date fast. Great review and video and glad to see you visited a proper cycling venue where proper cyclist ride.
They have nailed it. The big N are making some of the best cars right now
Looks like they’ve got this market sewn up then.
Nice 👌
Love the intro , very cinematic 👍🏻
Thank you 🙌
Saw a dark grey one today, it has some road presence!! The H front lights look great. Had to overtake it to see what it was now I'm here!!
I haver a test drive next week. Looks an interesting and practical vehicle. Great camping idea, good PR!
Great vid Pete. That back end reminds me a lot of the old '90s SsangYong Musso... Not a huge fan of that particular angle, but otherwise looks v Land Rover Defender-esque and very cool. 👍
(Oh, and that drone morning shot was class 👌)
It is a great looking car...love that retro looking back end.
My wife and I both really liked this review Sir Pete! It’s a good looking family suv! Definitely worth a look at! Great video!!
Hi Mate. I see you are about to binge watch 😜😂

Now towing with a 2021 XC90 Diesel MH. Probably our first and last XC90 as they have dropped the diesel option.
Love it! I see a fair bit of inspiration coming from the Defender 110.
I like the back. Excellent design vibes. Very practical.
Personally, I like it. The cinematic quality of your videos is excellent
Thanks 🙏🏻
It looks like a budget defender
Quite good looking on the outside 👏👏
The “budget “ part is that it will be reliable. ……. Unlike a defender.
Well Ped,another excellent video.Brilliant review.Thank you👍👍
Thank you kindly
I keep seeing a Kia EV9 near me, which is just great looking like this Hyundai.
Good work, Ped!
It's a shame the Hyundai haven't done a BEV too. This will likey become unavailable in 2030.
I'll be sticking to my Ioniq 5 for the time being.
Know that road well Pete. Good food in Y Talbot in Tregaron if you’re ever up there again. And the walk around Gwernffrwd Dinas is simply stunning in Spring.
Hi Ped, keep up the excellent work.
Great video! I'm about to order a blue hybrid Calligraphy spec.
Good choice!
This is more MPV rather than SUV, very honest, no bad thing. And the engine sounds like it’s working quite hard in the background.
Yep 👍
I check back when they update powertrain to this decade. Good looking car still.

I enjoyed watching the Video Review, In my opinion one of the best New Large SUVs 😊
They are a great car to drive,I have one in Australia where it's only available in hybrid at the moment.
do you open the windows? how you get the oxigen come from?
Cracked a window 👍
I think this looks great, especially in the satin bronze paint. This or a Defender 130? No brainer - this every day! Excellent, comprehensive review.
I have the xrt I love it. I love the calligraphy and how it has all the goodies. I prefer the xrt, but god I wish they blacked out the interior like in calligraphy for the xrt
Pete, you get all the good gigs mate 😎. Actually a nice change from high performance two seaters (though of course I loved your Swiss trip!)
Thanks 👍
Really nice video review of the Santa Fe. With the design being a simple box design, you know what is actually works and Hyundai and made it looks somewhat cool. On your model having a pan roof and or lighter seat fabric would be better but that green one…oh my gosh😍
Great review 👍
It’s an interesting package but still lacking in some areas. It probably also needs a diesel and possibly larger petrol version
Actually saw one today, very big, it was a satin brown, but looked really smart!
Bold design, but looks like a “ Cut n shunt “ disco front with Renault Espace rear. It problem is towing~ couldn’t pull a skin off a rice pudding!. As always an excellent review.
Nice SUV but absolutely beautiful countryside to drive in and the sights to see. I agree, I too am tall and would have difficulty sleeping inside. lol
agree on the exterior styling - looks good up to about the rear door handles...rear portion seems just to make the seat/capacity work - might look better as a shorter 4/5 seater.
I really like the looks of it.
I test drove a 2024 calligraphy the other day and was intrigued by the idea of this mirror. Personally I found the image to be a bit out of focus. Evening all from a sunny south of France another cold beer in Monaco. Back home in a couple of days
Ped, sounded like it was struggling a bit uphill, too heavy a car teamed with a too small engine?
Very good video Pete. Could this be our next Hyundai Hybrid after our current Tucson?
It could be although it is a little too big, we don’t need the extra row of seats (that went out years ago with our old Voyager) but it is a stunning vehicle. The 4x4 option is a real plus. I’m wondering if they’ll do a LR Defender and produce a short wheel base version….😁
They were designing the interior during the height of Covid, hence the UV sanitizing mini glovebox.
Good point. Perhaps a roof sanitizer for all passengers next pandemic.
I'd prefer a bigger engine than just 1.6 litres but that's not the age in which we live. Or if it was that much larger, it'd be a lot more expensive.
Definitely got Judge Dredd vibes going on. My 7-seat 3-year old XC90 T8 has over 100 bhp more so I can't help feel this is a nod to those who want a EV9 but don't want to stretch that far.

Yep. Just a flick of a switch 👍
Hi ped if i was able to afford one of the Santa Fe cars i would have the one that you reviewed it is a fantastic looking big car very nice indeed
Nice review, agree with you on the back, let’s the overall design down a bit, prefer the lighter interior but that bronze paint on your car looked excellent
SUVs are slowly evolving back to minivans 😂. Nothing beats a Ford Galaxy or VW Sharan if you want space and travel comfort.
Awful things those 2
😂😂 so true
I've often said get a minivan and save 15k or more. SUV wins on a muddy road.
I drove past a car from the 90s, forget what it was, maybe an old vauxhall and I swear it looked like dinky toy..but probably back in 98 it looked a decent size car compared to old fiestas and corsas etc.. cars are massive these days! Kia Sedona, much better than this two
Love the drone footage, have to say not sure it would make a towing rig
Correct. Hyundai and Kia are underpowered in general. Perhaps to meet competitor mpgs
I've owned a 2018 model year, Mk3 face-lifted manual Santa Fe from new and it does everything we need. It's great for a road trip to the Lakes or Highlands, spacious and reliable. Ooh, having never experienced one like that, I'd never thought before about how badly a high rear view "mirror" would work with varifocals if it's just a screen.
Did you keep the engine running in the vehicle while you were sleeping to maintain air conditioning?
Love the EV9 and thought this would be a good alternative until you said no BEV🙁 Great video in a great location however. I like your balanced reviews and even if you dont like something you don't proceed to slag it off, professional.

Is it the same car as the EV9? Chasis etc and is it less than the EV9.
the thing is... this is usable PHEV AND 7 seater..
How dose it compare to the Nissan x trail?
Be a deal breaker for me if you cant.
it's switchable and be used as a normal mirror, I have one
Haha. "Chabak" is a compound word of CAR (Korean : Cha) + Bivouac.
Also a mirror can't really go wrong.
it can be turned off though, functioning as a normal mirror... perhaps he could have mentioned that :)
Like the H H headlights
Looks a very good vehicle
Shame there’s not a internal combustion engine version no EV
Did you like this better than the E-Power Nissan X-Trail?
Nice review but not to keen on the hybrid 1.6l - Diesel Santa Fe was a great towing car and general all rounder with engine lasting 250k kms or more.. In A/NZ market Diesel was the number one seller given torque, towing capacity and overall fuel efficiency.. Will be interesting to see what the sales look like.. Considering a new/ex demo Sorrento GT line Diesel 4x4 but lots of competition now.. In addition the new road user charges model in NZ for PHEV has pretty much killed that type of power train !!
Yet another car with all the gizmos, gadgets and USB's...but with an engine that's just underpowered. Better options out there in my view.
Doesn’t feel underpowered
@@PetrolPed 0-60 in 9.5 seconds...if you fancy paying 50k to have a race with a Dacia Duster, then good luck with that.
I would have the non plug in but still great review
That green and white interior is 'sick' LOL
Orange is nice too!
Steve I agree - the lighter interior with the pan roof looks way better than the coal hole version Ped was driving - check out House of Cars for the green one review.
The digital mirror has the same effect on me. I can't focus the view.
Badge snobbery is changing there are so many Kia’s and Hyundais on the road. I run bangers by choice and I would love one of these, except for satin paint?..
현대차 마케팅 잘하네 ㅋㅋㅋ 한국에서 유행하는 차박문화 소개해주네😊
Looks positively sick in this brown and in green colour as well.
Seen it live. It is very big and boxy, but it does have an appeal of utility and practicality.
I've heard you saying that the plug-in has a 253hp engine. That is combined ICE+electric, isn't it?
Saw one parked up in Northumberland. The rear styling is terrible the rest looks quite good. EV9 more sorted overall.
Ultraviolet light sanitiser 🤔 What a great place for toys, this car will become the doggers favourite 😂
Could stick your hands in and maybe other appendages for a clean up afterwards too!
@@jimb7406 😂😂😂😂 pmpl!
A very impressive looking car which ticks many boxes... What's the price point for the car you had. Goof VFM I imagine
So what's the advantage of this over a large, more aerodynamic, more economical estate car ? It reminded me of a jacked up modern old Vovo 760 estate.
Estates won't sell in USA
But where would the pups go?!❤
good looking car
😃😃😃Richard
That looks like a land rover defender!! 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Only will last
Rear end is a bit 1990 Nissan Prairie 😐But overall looks pretty cool. Plenty of space for the K9 crew 🐕
The back end design is the problem for me. If the light clusters were higher up, I think it would be more aesthetically pleasing., apart from that a very nice car I wouldn't mind owning, as long as I didn't have to follow someone driving the same vehicle.
46-52 grand. You can get a second hand defender for that and is it just me or is that just a shoe box on wheels. It’s horrible. But inside looked ok
You can put this kind of bed in most cars, superb, passat..its the same length 4.8m afterall..
I don’t like the rear end…! Gorgeous views!
