How I Reclaimed the Pronunciation of My Name

My name is very meaningful to me, but for years I let people mispronounce my name because I thought it was easier for my white teachers, friends, colleagues, and more to pronounce.
The pressure I felt - and that I know soooo many People of Color feel - to have an Anglicized or “white” name was so intense. And of course it directly connects with white supremacy and the internalization of racism.
As People of Color, our names are a fundamental part of our identities and reclaiming the correct pronunciation can be a key part of both interrupting white supremacy and living as our authentic selves.
