Japanese is a pitch accent language meaning that words have to be pronounced with a specific combination of tones for each syllable depending on intended meaning and situation. This is independent from stressing a syllable, which you dont do in Japanese, although you do stress words within a sentence. Changing the pitch means only that, if by trying to change the pitch of a syllable you make it longer or somehow more stressed within the word itself, you are doing it wrong. On that we agree.
When he said "strudl" though, that was terrible, i think he meant a Czech word štrúdl which is pronounced schtroodel. (štrúdl is a kind of a apple pie).

The funniest thing to me is that trap isn’t actually completely wrong. A lot of times when you’re speaking a different language you kind of naturally put on a bit of an accent when you string a bunch of words together because that’s how they’re supposed to be said. Of course, he’s overdoing the accent, which is seen as very disrespectful but it’s also about the same level of disrespectful to mispronounce all the words and try to bend them to fit your accent.
It’s not disrespectful to say something in the only accent it know. If someone who spoke only Danish was saying something in English with their own accent, would to be offended?
It's called localization tho... It's normal because most languages don't have the same speech patterns and syllables... Like half my language are localizations~
@ngweso my name has a "th" sound like "the". When I lived in Japan as a child the other students couldn't pronounce my name correctly. The Japanese language doesn't have a "th" sound in it so none of the students had any practice performing that sounds. It didn't matter how many times I tried to correct them they where nearly incapable of making those sounds. This also applies to tourists and immigrants from foreign cultures. They might have trouble pronouncing some words or phrases. Seems to me like a ridiculous thing to get offended by.
I feel this XD I can understand trying to correctly pronounce a word in a context in which you are solely speaking that language, but in a situation where you're using a foreign word when talking to people who speak your language, I see no harm in using the pronunciation that's common in your own language... And everyone acts like it's only English speakers who pronounce foreign words in their own way, but that's not even close to true... I go to a school in which a large percentage of the population speaks Japanese fluently and when we're using Japanese, my name (Sidney) is pronounced Shidonii. If we're speaking English, it's pronounced in the English way. But you guise probably understand this concept better than most, lol. And be careful challenging Tumblr... The funny part was that he didn't pronounce those words like Italians do, but rather, like Italian Americans, dropping the last syllable. He said, "prosciutt'," not, "prosciutto," "brus-KETT,'" not, "bruschetta," "mozzarel'," not, "mozzarella." Etc.

To people saying he's pronouncing a bunch of the words wrong, that's kind of what the video is getting at. If you try to say words "correctly" of a language of origin with which you're not familiar, you're going to sound at best pretentious to an audience of the same origin and incompetent to people who actually know the language, so unless you're fluent in the language of origin, you're better off going with your language's standard pronunciation of the word.
This is the first time that I find a comment on TH-cam trying to answer other comments but that actually succeeds in doing so and doesn't sound even more annoying and stupid than the very comments it's trying to bash. So all that to say I appreciate what you wrote.

Rather "Shtroodell" if you want to sound at least slightly German when that exactly is read in English. I've no fucking clue whatsoever how to tell someone how to pronounce an Ü though. All the "Umlaute" from the German Language are strange to explain. Or maybe that way.. the German "U" sounds a bit like "OO" is pronounced in English. Take the word "poop" (I could also have chosen loop.. but what ever) as an example. The English "A" sounds a bit like the German "E" like "Aim" could be written like "Eem" in German to get a similar sound. And as "Ü" is the same as "UE" so the combination of the two you could try to fuse the "A" with the "OO" sound and Play a bit with it until you get the "Ü" sound right. And to expand this further. The "Ä" is a combination of the letters A and E in German. How do you get the A? Try pronouncing "Are" with a slightly British accent. Or try it with "Air" also with a British one and you get something similar to the "Ä".Have fun overpronouncing.

Take "Croissant" - he pronounces it correctly, and so many non-french-speaking nations manage to pronounce it correctly as well. Lucas de Andre- the correct pronunciations in English would be the Anglicized forms. Just like the correct pronunciations in Spanish would be the Hispanicized forms.
I guess it depends on the word. If it’s heavily Anglicized already, especially if it’s a name for something English (for example, Los Angeles) then it literally makes no sense to pronounce differently. But if you’re just changing the vowel a little bit in, say, “croissant” then it is perfectly acceptable

I feel this XD I can understand trying to correctly pronounce a word in a context in which you are solely speaking that language, but in a situation where you're using a foreign word when talking to people who speak your language, I see no harm in using the pronunciation that's common in your own language... And everyone acts like it's only English speakers who pronounce foreign words in their own way, but that's not even close to true... I go to a school in which a large percentage of the population speaks Japanese fluently and when we're using Japanese, my name (Sidney) is pronounced Shidonii. If we're speaking English, it's pronounced in the English way. But you guise probably understand this concept better than most, lol. And be careful challenging Tumblr... The funny part was that he didn't pronounce those words like Italians do, but rather, like Italian Americans, dropping the last syllable. He said, "prosciutt'," not, "prosciutto," "brus-KETT,'" not, "bruschetta," "mozzarel'," not, "mozzarella." Etc.

To people saying he's pronouncing a bunch of the words wrong, that's kind of what the video is getting at. If you try to say words "correctly" of a language of origin with which you're not familiar, you're going to sound at best pretentious to an audience of the same origin and incompetent to people who actually know the language, so unless you're fluent in the language of origin, you're better off going with your language's standard pronunciation of the word.

I like when foreigners use our words correctly and pronounced the way they are supposed to be pronounced. I dont say "Kak" instead of "cake" when I use it in french, so why would you say "croissant" instead of "croassan" like it's supposed to be? :D It really IS nice to hear foreigners making efforts to speak foreign words properly.

Rather "Shtroodell" if you want to sound at least slightly German when that exactly is read in English. I've no fucking clue whatsoever how to tell someone how to pronounce an Ü though. All the "Umlaute" from the German Language are strange to explain. Or maybe that way.. the German "U" sounds a bit like "OO" is pronounced in English. Take the word "poop" (I could also have chosen loop.. but what ever) as an example. The English "A" sounds a bit like the German "E" like "Aim" could be written like "Eem" in German to get a similar sound. And as "Ü" is the same as "UE" so the combination of the two you could try to fuse the "A" with the "OO" sound and Play a bit with it until you get the "Ü" sound right.
And to expand this further. The "Ä" is a combination of the letters A and E in German. How do you get the A? Try pronouncing "Are" with a slightly British accent. Or try it with "Air" also with a British one and you get something similar to the "Ä".Have fun overpronouncing.

Edit: I had no idea somebody cared about this comment so let me say this, I know a lot of languages come from Latin and that’s the reason why Spanish and Italian sound alike, being an Italian believe me I know that. What I meant is that the accent that he uses and the hand gestures are still stereotypical of the way Italians speak and even though Italian comes from Latin there is still a difference between the two languages. Also really wasn’t expecting any responses or likes lol.

I guess it depends on the word. If it’s heavily Anglicized already, especially if it’s a name for something English (for example, Los Angeles) then it literally makes no sense to pronounce differently. But if you’re just changing the vowel a little bit in, say, “croissant” then it is perfectly acceptable
