Brian, Glad we met you yesterday. Not often that we meet real guys that work with there hands. Can't believe you are this far already on the tub. The drive was well worth it. Rick
Great to meet you and Joe as well. Working on the body tub as time allows and making good progress already. Keep watching to see the transformation. Brian
Trying to get back on track and turn things around after that terrible CJ3A project. Hopefully this project is a sign of better times coming. Glad you are enjoying my videos.
I'm happy that you had someone come in the shop with a Jeep project for you to videoing for us. Keep moving forward buddy. Thanks for your time as always.
I bought a 78 CJ-5 in oct. of 1977. Best Jeep I ever owned. Bright Orange. Sharon and I drove it for 246,000 miles. 8 yrs later of everyday driving and off road Cave Exploring. 2 years ago purchased a CJ-5 and began to repair some of it. Well most all of it. Lotta work. New parts. Some that are supposebto be OEM but NOT. If you never owned older Jeeps you have no way of knowing just how good they were. I had an old M3B too. The mid 70's CJ's box frames rust more. they hold water and rust from inside out. Mine is useable. The rear body on these years rust in certain areas. the 19ga. metal untreated will rust guickly. The hat channels and the rear body valance channel and floor are particuarly bad on the No Tailgate jeeps. Love your shows. Very skilled and meticulous. Thanks for all your great work. Love to see a late 70's 5 in your shop. That wierd factoryv bent valence is hard to find and fit??? Thanks again
Hi Brian, it's Joe. Looking great, I am so glad I brought it over to you. Once I saw you video on that rear floor, I knew those new panels and hats from Classic would be a mess. Thanks so much for working on this for me. Can't wait to see the progress as it goes along.
Hello Joe, made some good progress today, making patterns and getting the first floor panel out. Hat channel is going to need some tweaking but that is standard procedure even when working with USA made parts from Classic.
i know im asking randomly but does anybody know a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid forgot my password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Douglas Jude i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im in the hacking process now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Cutting patterns, cutting out one panel at a time, absolutely essential ! I only hope people listen to you on this, once these rusty bodies have been cut about they spring and distort all over, by taking out one section at a time you can at least have some for of jig in the intact parts of the body, I find most repro parts need so much rectification that yo may as well make the part from scratch, for the cost of a bad panel you can buy materials enough for 3 attempts ! Thanks for posting this Brian, a lot of people will look at this body and think it is a hopeless project, but you have to think of it as a group of individual components. Chris B.
Hello Chris, I always hope that people learn and listen to what I am saying about taking your time and making patterns and cutting a body up a little bit at a time. So many people get ambitious with the plasma cutter and before you know it the tub is in many pieces and twisted all over the place. I am going to turn these wrong floor panels into the correct looking pieces so keep watching to see how it comes along. Great to have you watching and commenting, viewers like you are appreciated. Brian
They gave you a nice clean start. It's pretty bad but they brought it to the right guy. I can't wait to see the process of who you go about this. Making the templates ahead of time is sure a time saver in the end. I'm looking forward to the build.
This is a great project!! I have a body just like it, rust and all!! Very interested in how you flange out the square hole that is covered as my floor is just like it. I would venture a guess that Willys or Kaiser were using up M38A1 panels and just placed a cut to fit panel to cover where the deep M38A1 gas tank would have been. Keep any patterns you make as I may need some panels.
I'm starting to restore a '65 CJ-5A, you mentioned not getting hat channel and floor panels from "Classic". There is Classic Enterprises and Classic2Current that make floor panels for CJ's. Based on your experience who makes the best body panels for CJ's? Love the videos, thanks for showing us how to do it right!
They both sell the wrong panels for the CJ5. There are no companies making the correct floor pans for the CJ5 at this time. If you follow along on my videos you will see how to make the correct floor. You can start with a repro floor and make it into the correct one with some care. All depends on what you are doing, restoration, daily driver, etc.... most guys are ok with the wrong floors in their jeep.
I know it takes a bunch of time setting up camera angles, shooting video, then editing and uploading it, but HOLY COW does it make for some great videos! Have you given any more thought to a Patreon account?
I am still trying to figure out how patreon works. I am a fabricator not much of a computer guy so figuring how things work is a real pain. working on it though as time allows. Brian
Do you have a company you recommend for buying floor panels? I just bought a cj5 and will need to replace the floors and was going to order the floor panels
make sure the body is braced well, make a template of any critical dimensions or details then cut everything out. Prep your seams, remove any rust, and then begin building back the rockers and floors.
Great to see another project turn up so soon. Your videos will add to the provenance of that Jeep. What type of primer is on the tub and other panels? Will you be media blasting and epoxy priming or do you ever use an acid etch?
This tub was sandblasted and primed before I got it. I will epoxy prime the new steel I put in, then put one or two sealer coats over the entire tub and parts. After that regular 2k primer and then a single stage top coat in Sierra Blue. Will show the process along the way. I usually like to start with bare metal but this industrial sherwin williams bare metal primer seems to be very nice and is adhered to the sandblasted parts very well. Don't see any problems with it.
Classic parts are not great and I don't know any other place to get good stuff. Best to find a local craftsman to duplicate the parts you need, like I do for customers.
Great video glad you have a customer project. Would you happen to sell a Willys truck interior rubber floor mat didnt know if youd worked on any or made a pattern to cut out a thick hd rubber mat? I have heard the reproductions are terrible.
the reproductions are terrible but I don't have a pattern and have never made a complete mat. I was using diamond plate rubber for a while and made nice mats but it isn't able to be molded around the tunnel.
i do not like rotisserie's for body work. Too much chance for flex and misalignment. They are way overrated and I have tried them and quickly decided they are not for me when doing quality work. I usually work on the solid floor and a donor frame to make sure everything gets welded in proper alignment.
I still don't have a pickup truck around to make a clutch kit with. Was supposed to have one come in but it never showed up. Can't make the kit without a good vehicle to fit it to.
My tubs roaches. The floors actually are in good shape it's the side panels. I'm going to have to go through and weld in a bunch of sheet metal as I'm not paying 4k for a tub
Brian,

Sounding like your old self again. I hope this is the beginning of the turnaround you needed. I’m rooting for you. Loved this vid.

Glad you are still enjoying the videos. Keep watching as we go from rust to paint on this body tub.
Just enjoy watching your work and skill. Thanks
Thanks for watching Chris, glad you are enjoying the videos.

@Douglas Jude It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my account :D
Thank you for your time making this video..great tech tips that will carry over to my 67 scout redux..
I really appreciate you taking time to do these videos ,because I know it is a lot of work.
Thanks for watching Louis. More to come on this project.

Looking good, and good information, thanks. I had a 1978 CJ5 years ago.
Really excited about this build as thisnis the stage I'm at on a '58. Woot! And thanks for the tips.
Glad you are enjoying the videos. Keep watching to see the transformation from rusted to a painted masterpiece.
Can’t wait to see you fix that dash
Concentrating on the body tub now but when I get a free moment I will get the dash straightened out.
Glad things are looking better you ...Keep up the good work ...
Working hard to make better days for myself. Thanks for your continued support and positive comments, you are appreciated.
Brian
Hi Brian, This is a great series of videos coming. Looking forward to them!
Trying my best to bring back some good videos and get myself back on track. More to come so keep watching.

Making steady process on this body tub restoration. Keep watching and before you know it the entire tub will be Sierra Blue.
Brian
metalshaper where are you located
Good to see you back on track
Getting there, feels good to work on another project after that terrible CJ3A project.
great to see another paying project come in. I really enjoy these videos :)
Glad you are enjoying the videos, keep watching to see the progress of this body tub.
It sure would be amazing if they make the parts to OEM standards!
What a concept!
Doesn't seem like any manufacturers are interested in making quality reproductions. Guess that is why projects show up at my door. More to follow.

Good to hear from you Harold. Drivers side floor is coming next and I will show step by step how to put in the correct floor.
Brian
As always great video!
Thanks for watching.
Good video!
thanks for watching, more videos on the way.

What do I do if theres nothing to go by mine is a flintstome model
should be an interesting project
Thanks for the video. If you had rocker and cowl support rust as well would you still remove floor and then fix rocker or should I fix rocker first?
make sure the body is braced well, make a template of any critical dimensions or details then cut everything out. Prep your seams, remove any rust, and then begin building back the rockers and floors.

Do you use a different material than wood when replacing hat channels?
I use teflon or delrin as a replacement for wood.
That hand made chisel of yours looks like a shipwrights caulking iron
You are correct, I had a pattern of a shipwrights Iron and that is what I patterned my chisel after. size and shape are perfect.
If you had to buy these replacement components, where would you get them from? Is there any place other than classic enterprises that fit better?
Classic parts are not great and I don't know any other place to get good stuff. Best to find a local craftsman to duplicate the parts you need, like I do for customers.
Great video glad you have a customer project. Would you happen to sell a Willys truck interior rubber floor mat didnt know if youd worked on any or made a pattern to cut out a thick hd rubber mat? I have heard the reproductions are terrible.

So what's the cost to do something like this
I have a 84 CJ7 and my doors are rusted out I would like to know if you or someone else makes a door skin for them?
I don't have a pattern for your door panel but if you make a pattern I can make a door skin for you.
Do you ever use a rotisserie to hold the body while you rebuild? Or do you just work on it on the floor?
i do not like rotisserie's for body work. Too much chance for flex and misalignment. They are way overrated and I have tried them and quickly decided they are not for me when doing quality work. I usually work on the solid floor and a donor frame to make sure everything gets welded in proper alignment.
I would like to order your heavy duty clutch linkage. I have a 1949 F4-134 pickup truck. Please let me know your cost and please include shipping.
I still don't have a pickup truck around to make a clutch kit with. Was supposed to have one come in but it never showed up. Can't make the kit without a good vehicle to fit it to.

Take your time and fix all the rusted areas and you will soon have a nice tub.
