The thinking on Venting has gone backwards in recent years. With the popularity of open concept housing resulting in lack of walls for Plumbing & HVAC systems, which has led to the use of “auto-vents” at each fixture and less actual vent piping. Soo many variables to consider now.

I had no issues w/ code, but ran into problems w/ the practical section. It had just been to long to remember. This video was very easy to follow. Thank you.

This was a very insightful and well produced video, appreciate the effort on breaking this down to common sense simple calcs for determining piping arrangements. Trying to fix a lot of the DIY hot jobs accumulated by past homeowners and was looking for a reference to replace everything correctly, although our state uses IPC 21 I was able to cross reference quite easily. I guess my CE instructor was wrong. He said they got rid of the 3” 3 wc limit and were sizing based solely on fixture units. According to the 2018 book in the video that is incorrect. It was irrelevant to me because it’s rare that I’ll take 3” out of a building. Also? I know he’s doing minimum code requirements but I’d never run a drain smaller than 2” and I rarely run a vent smaller than 2”. The only time I’ll use 1 1/2 vents is when I’m limited by the wall. I think this is pretty standard practice or it should be. It’s best to always reduce at you trap arm. On tubs when we used to use the brass slip joint waste and overflows we’d bush down to 1 1/2 out of a 2” traps. Now with the pvc ones I just use a 2 x 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 tee. 3 things you can’t have too much of, shut off valves, clean outs, and drain pipe size. Something interesting regarding size of drains that I was clueless about until I moved to a city. I worked the first few years of my career in a small town. We had two hardware stores but most of our material was delivered every two weeks from morrisons. I rarely saw 3”. Every once in a while I’d see it on a service call but it was extremely rare. This was because when you have to order fittings and have the space to store them, you limit what you carry. This meant we never used 3”. We used 1 1/2 for trap arms or tub risers but that’s it. This is because it’s cheaper and easier to stock 2” and 4” fittings instead of 1 1/2, 2, 3, 4. It probably worked better this way because that means everything is oversized. For several years I just thought this was how it was supposed to be done. Even after I moved to a city where we weren’t as limited, I still didn’t connect those dots for a while.
Hi Quinn , I have a 2 storey bungalow with a 3pc bathroom on the 2nd floor, on the 1st floor I have a single bowl sink ,a dishwasher and laundry tub also a powder room( toilet and vanity single sink) I have put in a 3 pc bathroom in the basement( shower,wc, and a vanity sink) the 3 “ drain line runs about 8ft before it ties in to a 4” building drain and that is about 8ft before it exits the building. I was told the Drain line in the basement should be 4” all the way from the toilet. I don’t want to break the concrete To redo it😱 but if I have to I will. Thanks .
Great video! Curious if you’d recommend a DIYer to take on replacing an old cast / galvanized system by themselves? The vast majority of it is replacing what’s there (scabbed together system, has old drum traps, etc) but we’re also adding a new bathroom too. I’ve got some minor experience with plumbing, and access to my dad who has a decent amount of knowledge, though neither of us are plumbers. Is this something to leave to the pros or with enough time and patience, I’ll find my way through it all?
Oh, that’s a tough question. The fact that you could recognize a drum trap is a good start :-) If your current system is plumbed to code, it wouldn’t be hard to just copycat the installation. But it will be quite a bit of work!

I'm on NC 2018 IPC and the horizontal fixture drain for a washing machine has to be minimum 3". Is that different than UPC? Your illustration shows 2".
Yes working with 2015 uniform plumbing study guide and at the example DWV sizing chart and can't figure out how there coming up with there DFU please help
You state section U must be 4in due to 4 being more than 3 WC per note 4. IF, there were 3 WC, does this pipe still need to be 4in due to 6-unit traps?
