    This is PART ONE of a TWO PART series from DAY ONE of Overland EXPO EAST.
    Seriously folks, so much amazing content, I had to break this into two movies. Part two is coming up asap!
    I had the great fortune of getting signed up for some phenomenal classes this Overland Expo (Expo West I didn't get registered early enough). Fundamentals in Winching was absolutely fantastic, I learned so much that built very well upon some of the first experiences I have had in winching.
    In this movie, we literally go into detail about everything we learned about winching safely. And I've already gotten to use some of what I learned in this class!
    #toyota #4runner #overlanding #off-roading #4x4 #winching #winch #winchsafety #warnwinches
    I just wanted to express my genuine appreciation for the promoters and organizers of Overland Expo East (and west), Jonathan and Roseann Hanson. I'd also like to formerly acknowledge the course instructors, Mark Kellgren and Johathan Hanson. I appreciate their preparation and all the knowledge I acquired in their winching class.
    I said it at the end of the Picking a Line movie (I believe), but I feel it important to mention here as well: Watching these movies is a fantastic way to learn, I watch videos on TH-cam all the time to figure out how to do stuff. But NOTHING replaces the physical experience of attending a class, interacting with the other class members and instructors, and witnessing live situations and all the variables that can play in with varying personalities.
    In full disclosure, I have had conversations with the event promoters and they did ask that I offer some clarification, hence what I have above - HOWEVER, I absolutely agree with this and freely offered to publish this in the description of this movie.

    UV rays from any daylight degrades synthetic rope. A climbing rope for example is considered expired after get 30 days of full sun.

    "Doubling up" is referred to as a double line pull in Australia . Or triple line pull if you use two pulleys. This is good for heavier pulls ; ie vehicle stuck in mud, or you have a trailer.... it just eases the load on the winch.

    You explained it perfectly, Jason. I've actually been doing a lot of research for winching ever since I got my 4Runner, and a lot of the stuff you went over I actually found on my own. But I'm glad to know that what I read up on is good practice in a recovery situation. Can't wait to see the rest of your Expo East stuff!

    Hey Jason great video wanted to comment on the point about turning the shackle 1/4 turn out after it’s snug I was always also told this for years working as a industrial electrician (do a lot of heavy rigging) I recently took a class by Crosby a big rigging company and they told us not to do this because after time the shackle separates and after time you will not be able to tighten the pin all the way they showed us many shackles that have warped by the 1/4 turn method I would suggest carrying a pipe wrench or tool to help loosen the pin

    Great video and great info one piece of gear that I would recommend for winch recoveries is a line dampener or heavy bag on the winch line for the unfortunate event the line does break.

    Jason, ive been watching your vlog videos a lot lately. Great content! I'm curious what programs you use to edit and fuse videos together as well as overlay soundtracks. I also live in panama city (lynn haven) when not on the ship. Are you located in this area? I am new to the area and im looking for some good trails to ride.

    Synthetic rope ( Dyneema Rope ) is vastly superior to a steel cable which has been know to kill Australia uses Dyna Rope in preference to steel cables.

    Dont you want the anchor vehicle to be out of gear and someone on the brakes? Ive always heard this helps protect the transmission.

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SoCal Hillbilly yes! They remarked about this saying that either someone should be in the vehicle holding the brakes (in neutral) or it should be chocked.

    • @TheKPDX
      @TheKPDX 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. The parking pawl is weak and you can easily break it and ruin your transmission. Put the vehicle in neutral & use your foot to hold the brake. Chocks can be used as supplementary resistance.

  • @EmpTy-kf2rq

    Safety first?!?! There should always be a weighted damper on the line and on both sides of the line when using a pulley.

  • @dahveed284
    @dahveed284 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It was all making sense UNTIL you said a shorter line out of the winch has a REDUCED strength. Can you elaborate on this? I would have thought having less line out would have slightly increased the capacity (very slightly) simply by having less line exposed.

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      dahveed284 me too but it’s basic physics, which wasn’t one of my strong suits. Google it - there were some good explanations out there. Before I published this I did the same to make sure I understood it correctly.

    • @captainawesome3816

      Essentially less rope on drum means winch has less effort to rotate the drum, as the 'rolling diameter' of the drum is smaller.

    • @francoisl7663
      @francoisl7663 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Has to do with the diameter of the line/spool. Its like a gear ratio.

    • @williamreed7806
      @williamreed7806 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Easy way to think about it is like adding bigger tires to your vehicle your engine and transmission have to work harder to turn bigger tires, the winch motor has to work harder to turn the bigger diameter drum with more line on it then it would if you only have 6 wraps of line on it.

    • @millwrightdad3753
      @millwrightdad3753 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You lose strength as more line is pulled out, the roll on the winch is what makes it strong.

    Throw a 5lbs ankle weight on the line in case it snaps.

    So as a fellow 5th Gen 4runner owner I also learned something. Did he explain where the rated points of recovery are on the T4R? Instagram: Clifford_t4r

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hrs4me30 nope. We didn’t get into vehicle specific from the factory recovery points. If I had to guess what they’d have told me: perhaps the hitch, but nothing else. You’d need to mount some.

    • @getlostbrandon
      @getlostbrandon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      anything bolted to the frame. IE - receiver hitch using the pin and not the safety hook loops on the side. for the front either steel bumper with rated recovery points for shackles or after market tow hooks bolted to the frame. its the same for every vehicle except unibodies, which require a little extra thought. for some recoveries, you may have to get more creative though
