The concept of a Dahmer series really rubs me the wrong way. Especially since it’s a DRAMA series. The thought of someone k*lling one of my friends or family members and then a drama tv series being made about it….I can’t even begin to imagine how hurtful and infuriating that would be. My goodness.
Absolutely! Recreating murders that happened in real life as a drama series is absolutely disrespectful. Another thing that the Netflix drama series did insensitively was not getting consent from the victim's families. /:
the sheer amount of documentaries, tv shows, movies etc about jeffrey dahmer just makes me wonder why we needed another show about him, like... what point could you possibly make by now? like what purpose does this serve?? it just feels so voyeuristic and invasive at this point, like how are there people still trying to capitalise off of trauma??
I agree 100% with every single word you just said. People have become so desensitized to the actual crime, while at the same time trying to be "loving" by excusing the murderers. An informative documentary is one thing. (Such as the mini-documentary on the Murder Castle and the man who was behind it.) A drama series for entertainment is absolutely unnecessary and ridiculous. People died. But Netflix (and many creators) can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that this was real. All they see is an opportunity to make money off of it. This is part of the reason I cancelled my Netflix subscription.
Absolutely! Informing the public about true crime incidents in the form of documentaries allows us to be aware of what happened and what we can do to prevent it from happening again. But using a crime where people were targeted and murdered in a horrific way for ENTERTAINMENT is... mind boggling. Maybe I should go cancel my Netflix subscription too 😭
I've been fascinated with true crime from an early age (from the time I was an 8-year-old watching Unsolved Mysteries with my mom); as an adult, it's become part of my interest in social psychology and ways we can prevent these things from happening by creating better support systems. I don't get the "fandom" aspect of it.
That's a great reason to get into the true crime genre! It is incredibly interesting on a psychological level and we can definitely learn from what's happened in the past so that history doesn't repeat itself. The "fandom" is absolutely disrespectful /:
I agree with everything said! I am really into true crime, I've been watching all that staff since I was 6. But watching "Dahmer" was the first time I constantly felt that unsettling and nauseous feeling inside. It almost felt as if I do something illegal since I can't even imagine how hurtful this series is for victims relatives. Yes, the actors performance, the atmosphere, everything looks amazing, but NONE of this changes the fact that this series shouldn't exist in the first place. At least not now, when the wound still is pretty much open. That type of series shouldn't be published, when it hasn't even been 50 years after the actual events, especially when relatives hadn't given any agreement for this to be made. I appreciated the actors work, it was amazing, but I definitely won't watch dahmer again, it seriously makes me feel pain. I don't get how can somebody be fangirling over that. I mean even the series itself shows how disgusting and stupid that "thirst for criminal" looks. There is just something wrong with all that.
Yes! The performance and the cinematography were exceptionally done, but it shouldn't have been about Dahmer. It absolutely is insensitive considering the victims families were not on board and they still did it anyways. The fangirling/glamorizing was...really sickening too. There is absolutely something wrong in that, but so many people have become desensitized to it and have forgotten what it means to be respectful. /: I hope that this kind of thing doesn't happen again.. but I'm not holding my breath. 🥲
Agree with you so much… as someone who was a teenager living in Chicago, with cousins in Milwaukee during the actual real days of JD, I really appreciate how much you have such a meaningful and intelligent understanding of the media vs the reality of these events - I.e. we were actually affected by JD’s real time trauma show. So glad I found your YT channel tonight. ✌️
It must be especially horrifying for you and your cousins to see Netflix releasing a dramatic reenactment, because you all saw the horrors of the JD case unfold in real time. /: Too many people don't understand the "true" part in true crime and it's heartbreaking and frustrating to see. Thank you so much for your comment and I'm so glad you're here! 🫶
I’m kinda upset Dahmer’s story became so popular and almost glorified because of that damn show. I’ve been watching true crime videos and documentaries for years now and not once I took it as entertainment but more as an introspection into the killer’s mind and psychology, and especially to remember the victims. Never watched a movie or show about them.
Seriously! True crime content itself can be incredibly useful and interesting for the reasons you stated, and a way for us to not let the victims be forgotten. It truly is sickening to think that the Netflix show made Dahmer "trending" and allowed people to glorify (and even romanticize) Dahmer. /:
I couldn't imagine having people trivialise the pain and suffering someone I know and loved and putting their murderer on a pedestal. The human psyche is fascinating so that's why I like true crime but it also makes me acutely aware of the war zone it leaved behind for the family. There needs to be WAY more respect, care and liaising with the families.
I wholeheartedly agree. It's despicable what people will exploit without batting an eye for profit or clout.. True crime is fascinating in the way that it allows us to get a glimpse into the human mind, but as you mentioned, it needs to be treated with respect, especially taking into consideration the victim's families and their thoughts.
You should watch a 1994 film called “Natural Born Killers” which is about the disgusting nature of glorifying serial killers. They were talking about this 💩 TWO DECADES AGO!
Not to mention the most recent Dahmer series wasn't even a documentary, but a dramatic reenactment and the victim's families didn't even consent to it 😭
Enjoy watching your videos. Happy Holidays & a bit off topic here: There are many theories regarding the University of Idaho college students that were murdered nearly six weeks ago; what's your take on that particular cold case?
The case of the 4 murdered students in Idaho is honestly horrifying. All murders are horrifying, but this one is baffling in the worst way possible. No motive, no suspects, just a whole lot of questions with no answers, 4 grieving families, and a shaken community. I think that a lot of people online who are trying to investigate things on their own can be helpful to make sure this case isn't forgotten, but I hope people don't jump to conclusions and end up accusing innocent people. The police can be...pretty incompetent so I understand why people are frustrated and want to find the murderer, but at the end of the day, they're not detectives. I have a feeling this is going to be a Netflix documentary because the entertainment industry loves to exploit trauma and tragedy.. but I sincerely hope that they stop glorifying/excusing murderers and focus on the victims instead. The main reason why people aren't glorifying this is because there's no suspect so I'm worried at how things will change when someone is charged. I just hope that the families are taking care of one another this holiday season and grieving in their own ways. /:
They make these documentaries to show that these people exist in the world. I watch these shows and I don’t glorify these guys or sympathize with them.

Exactly!! How do the producers at Netflix not understand this? 😭

Amazing video girl. You deserve more views!
Awww, thank you for your kind words! ❤️ You're giving me the motivation to keep going :)

They were talking about this 💩 TWO DECADES AGO!
Thank you for the recommendation! Two decades and things haven't changed?! I'm disappointed, but not surprised for some reason 🥲
True crime is fine. It’s just that Jeffrey Dahmer has been told six times now. And that’s at least four times too many.
Not to mention the most recent Dahmer series wasn't even a documentary, but a dramatic reenactment and the victim's families didn't even consent to it 😭

I agree w you. I love true crime however there are some channels that almost make it a comedy
Yes! There are people who treat true crime stories as pure entertainment and even critique their lives as if they're watching a fictional character.
They make these documentaries to show that these people exist in the world. I watch these shows and I don’t glorify these guys or sympathize with them.
