As an older beginner level player, I really appreciate your methods of teaching. So many amazing players and teachers on YT but your calm and patient instructions really make a difference to learners like myself 🙂
@@jphaesen3860 And me! The amount of guitar teaching resources on TH-cam is overwhelming and it's easy to dabble but not get anywhere. Best to stick to one channel and stick with it.
You are such a great teacher! I kind of understood this but you gave me a real "light bulb" moment. Explaining the odd man out to know the key is so helpful and then moving back 3 frets for the minor. Thanks so much for your lesson and explaining these together. Most "teaching" videos are explaining for 10 seconds and then 10 minutes watching a professional musician play something that would take me 5 years to learn LOL. Thanks Again!
This was really helpful. After learning the scale I was confused on how it became certain keys, but it was actually pretty simple and your explanation helped.
Hey Lauren. My guitar teacher covered this as well. What brought this video was the fact I wanted to learn the RIFF for 'So What' by Pink. It was written in F# minor and as I saw the tab sheet, I realized with some thinking that it was just using the Penatonic scale for the riff -> and it is also wickedly fun to play. I never imagined how much Penatonic scales are used in pop music - I do now! You are the best.

Thank you Lauren, I have always felt one can learn something from everyone and I have with you. Especially identifying what scale to use for any given song I may hear. 👍
Thanks for this pentatonic lesson Lauren. I didn't think I needed to watch another pentatonic tutorial, but I decided that I wanted to see what you had to say about it. I'm glad I did because the "odd man out" tidbit was a gem! It seems so obvious now....but I never thought about it that way. I'm glad that I stayed for the entire lesson!
Hi Lauren, I've been playing guitar by ear for decades, and now finally getting around to learning music theory. THANK YOU for making it make sense, before now it's always felt too overwhelming.
You put it so simple,, make it so easy for everybody. Thank you I really appreciated how helpful you been and you are just a magnificent guitar instructor, and player.
Another easy-to-understand lesson from Lauren. The songs refences and association with a popular song is a built-in reference for remembering scales. Another master class.
I have watched more videos on learning guitar than I can count and have gotten massively frustrated at not being able to understand them. Then I found a video of yours on Travis picking which led me to all your other videos and in a couple of days learnt more useful theory than I'd learnt in months elsewhere (including the well known sites that I paid for). You are fantastic at explaining things in a way we all can understand. You have improved my knowledge and playing and I thank you 🙏
Thank you very much for this lesson, it was the one I was looking for. I feel much better if I understand the theory . Without theory I’m always afraid to use wrong notes and everybody will here them besides of me, because I’m not so talented in hearing wrong notes. And, Laura, you teach it very easy to understand, for me you are a very good teacher.
I'll try next time, but you could always slow down the video playback by selecting the gear icon at the bottom right of the video and by opening the settings
As always like your videos/ because always so understandable , love going back to your videos just to refresh my thinking on guitar theory Like you so much !
Thank you I have been so "Shut Off" from playing lately (perhaps the Guitar and I needed a break) Since I started probably 2 years now I have been stuck running fret board up down top to bottom just working on fingers and picking notes with no real drive? passion? For me scales sound awesome YES it is fundamentals I guess some get stuck I have always thought that scales can be toyed? or played? tweeked even so the guitar enthusiast is not feeling like they are fighting/struggling let me learn scales SO that I can toy? play? tweek the scale. YES for some of us root fundamental's are that important. There are those that just pick up and mirror the playing, however a few of us want the How and Why of it. Want to know the notes we are playing instead of copy catting. That is ME I do not think it makes any sense to anyone else. I got my A Minor Pentatonic from your previous video, I am now learning more of the others, I am so happy to be back at it.
I've been playing for around 20 years with no theory to lean on. This is the first time someone explained how to pick a scale that fits with the songs chords so simply!!! Find the odd chord and go back three notes, WHAT?!?! EVERYONE ELSE MAKES IT SOUND SO COMPLICATED!! Haha!!
Ha ha ha. Honestly, I played guitar for 10 years and wrote a whole album without knowing a single thing about theory. So goes to show you it doesn't have to be complicated to help people understand. Theory has helped me so much and has helped me become a better player, but I always do theory on a need to know basis. It can feel like an algebra or calculus class for many and that's not always fun. Small doses at a time is a better approach unless someone is REALLY into it.
Why is the on screen guitar layout upside down compared to the guitar your holding? In some videos they don’t label the frets, compounding the problem.
Thanks for the lesson. Understand A minor is the relative minor of C major.... Why do musicians play A minor pentatonic over an A Major chord progression? Only for blues? Thanks.
Wow that's great explanation made simple. I just wish my brain was young again to absorb it after only watching once or twice. Takes a while for anything (even "simple" stuff like this) to sink in now I'm 60!
These pentatonic videos are really helpful, Lauren. The cross-sections are cool. All the scaling exercises have me moving my hands experimenting around the fretboard. But, your *fingers* seem to hover just above the strings. (Also, it looks like you're going w/ alternative picking.) Mine still fly all over the place. Any tips on how to improve? 🎸
@@LaurenBateman Thanks, Lauren. After I went thru the pentatonics again this morning, I went back over them and your dexterity playlist. Now, my fret hand feels freer without flying as much. And, I can alternate pick at the same time. Once I get everything going smoothly, I'll try to do ALL that and chew gum. 😉
Such a great lesson! Thank you very much! I’m just wondering what if the song is in a minor key: Do I have to play the major pentatonic instead and is there a similar rule? Or can I also just play the minor scale for a minor key? Btw, you definitely have a new subscriber 😊
Thanks, Lauren! I take it Larry had already watched this tutorial that he knew about the backing tracks! Been playing the Am pentatonic this morning on the 10 for 10 Challenge, and an hour or so after as well! Will keep doing this, it's fun!
I refuse to give up. I’m learning this! Do you have videos on the other scales? Major pentatonic? Blues? Dorian? Phrygian? I found a chart picture but it’s not broken up into smaller parts to exercise? Looks like freakin Greek to me without it?
Hi Lauren, as I wrote below, I’m enjoying your lesson very much and I’m trying to figure out the scales in songs. Not easy, sometimes it doesn’t sound right. For example for „House of the rising sun, I took F#m Pentatonic? I think it sounds strange?
Well Lauren as always "Wish you were here " too entertaining to be " Comfortably numb " more like " Interstellar overdrive " my practice sessions are extending and enjoying every moment thanks to you. Another excellent lesson, thanks for taking the time, regards Andrew
At 1:5 you said we need to understand the relationship between the A pentatonic and the C major scale...because I don't understand that, I understood nothing after that point.
Also look to your circle of 5th's chart it is an amazing tool to help you understand the major keys and relations to each other such as C major count three spaces to the right and it is A,which is the relative minor of C,do this with any key letter and that will give you your relative minor for that key,and there is so much more to this tool.
My goal is to understand the pentatonic scale/s next. Beginner here, 3 weeks in, but learnt so much already. I want that freedom on my electric guitar to be able to use the entire guitar. Pardon my bad English. I'm still learning to speak "guitar".
Seems to me something is backwards here. If one plays that shape with the index finger on the root note, let's say A for example, I believe you're playing the Am pentatonic scale in that position (or the Cmaj pentatonic as referenced by your little finger on the C note). Moving back three frets would position one's pinky now on the A note, and the same pattern would now render such an Amaj pentatonic scale. This seems to conflict with what you're teaching. Am I missing something here?
I’m 59 now When I was 15 I got a box and learned chords from a chord book In those days we had record players I don’t know where it came from but I would and could play along not even know what keys were By 17 there was nothing I couldn’t play or pick lead to Never had a lesson and made a living at it for couple years I had hip replacement October 2021 and only played three times since SO I’m going back and looking at all teaching lessons I’m no genius but to me it’s like a man and a dog There’s something natural there like between a man and a guitar That’s how see it It’s natural And don’t get stuck move to n then come back That’s just how I see it If that makes any sense Snd yeah I guess I’m weird lol Just a thought everybody is different As they say Far Out lol

Hi Mr Mofo, at this time I do not. But I'm working on it!
If I find a backing track for A minor pentatonic scale does that mean the backing track will be in the key of C?
Yes, C Major. The notes in a C Major scale: C D E F G A B The notes in the A minote scale A B C D E F G Some notes, different arrangement.
