Lightbulb moment, I've been noodling around with this horizontal scale for a while now and always jump off at position 5. I hadn't until this video realized (I don't know why) that this maps to all 5 positions, so obvious! Clouds clear and the sun shines through.💡
This is the basis for the diagonal pentatonic concept - very well and clearly explained Andrew. BTW got your ear training course - it's very good. It provides a solid foundation for this essential skill needed by all guitarists/musicians. Highly recommend.
brotherr i know you know this cause people tell you all the time but your content is truly so helpful and engaging and genuinely fun to watch. it’s super inspiring both as a guitar player and as a person so thank you!!!
Wow, absolutely the best description I’ve ever ever seen. Superb job and something that’s literally going to help thousands of people on their guitar journey. Thank you!
thank you im a chord guy and have no clue on lead you just gave me confidence to start youre a good man i wish i lived near you to take private lessons in person i live in Tracy california
Thanks a lot, I just finished a soloing book and learned the 5 shapes and can play them pretty well, watched a ton of videos but non explained it so well as yours how the shapes can all be connected...thanks!
Yo!!!! Epic video, bro. I subbed. Appreciate you getting to it and not throwing a bunch of other stuff(it can be distracting). Typically when I hear someone complain it typically info overload. Well presented. Tks, will def be sharing
This is absolutely fantastic. Beginners today have access to so much great content to make the journey easier. Really handy tip here. What would have made it even better would be if you had showed an example on how to use this pathway for a different key other Am/C. Meaning for example if your position or scale 1 was instead under B instead of under A. So position 1 at B minor. You didn't have to show the whole thing again. Just show how to use it or adapt it to a different key.
I see how you got position 5 for the a minor pentatonic where you did. I saw a resource showing position 5 for the g minor pentatonic scale at the 15th fret so I guess it depends on which note you want to start on. 😅
imagine if when most guitarist first start out with scales if we learned theory more this way vs just descending and ascending....... I jammed with a buddy one day and he showed me this spider walk going more left and right vs up and down.... and it finally clicked in my head how to get my playing more musically. the up and downs are good but moving left to right is where the dancing shines.
I was taught this by my first guitar teacher over 20 years ago. You presented this very well. Plus you explained it in detail, making this easy to grasp. Thank you.
Subd right away. I already know this stuff but I remember looking for something similar a while back and I found nothing. Your lesson is very well executed.
Do you cover a wider range of octaves if you play horizontally vs staying in a single pentatonic box shape? These 2 sound very different to me but i cant explain it. Moving up and down the fretboard just sounds more 'fluent' as if you had a larger vocabulary. Why idk.
But I suspect it has to do with string gauges. You're hearing more notes being produced by each string instead of just 2 notes per string. The variety is there and it doesn't sound monotonous. Not sure.
Your diagrams are different than basically every lesson I have seen on TH-cam. You may want to consider converting to that "standard" (even though I'm not even sure that it is indeed a standard of any kind lol).
Thanks for watching! If you want the flipped fretboard diagrams for this lesson you can access them here: www.patreon.com/AndrewClarke

You explained it very well.....not in some advanced musical language. I will check out your other videos.....thanks!
I'm so glad it was helpful ☺
@@andrewclarkeguitar you can do that with any key....just start on the root note if the low E string and do the same formula?

Nice! I've been using these diagonal patterns for 25 years or so. I use a two string horizontal pattern down the neck too. Good video.
Great lesson. I’ve struggled to connect the 5 positions. This is very helpful.
Awesome. Glad it was helpful!
Epic! 🎸OMG😮💕Thank you Andrew . You’re an excellent teacher, clear and Concise! After all these years, the Penny finally dropped for me 🙏

Yeah I prefer looping it back around and putting it below position 1 in this case. But it really doesn't matter. Both are correct!
Nice way to look at this. Thanks

Excellent lesson
Thank you! 😃
Can these pentatonic scale positions be adjusted to play in all keys?
Yes! You just shift the shapes up or down the fretboard. Nothing about the shapes change. :)

not gonna lie, game changer for me.

What is the advantage of playing the scale horizontally rather than vertically?
Hes a genuis

Amazing tutorial man. Has anyone told you you look like Paul from Lany? 😅
Thanks! And no, you're the first 😂
@@andrewclarkeguitar Lol hilarious but seriously man haha got hooked watching your vids. Feels like watching Paul doing a tutorial 😂

Why are the pictures backwards?
Way to produce a video
Thanks 😄
