    Fascinating how you make the fur come alive.

    The level of detail with pastels & the visual “softness “ is amazing, i use colour pencil & never thought i would consider using pastels due to the mess ,dust, & cost of setting up but these videos are so captivating Im getting really interested & might possibly jump in sometime soon!

    I've used pastels for years, but self-taught. No wonder I have trouble! I didn't know you should start with dark. Beautiful work.

      Thank you! I don't want to say you should as everyone works differently. But for me dark to light is key with pastel, similar to oil painting. Glad this was helpful :-)

    Beautiful work Emma, thanks for generously sharing your years of knowledge. Your love of animals shows through when you describe the pup you are working on and it also comes through into your finished work. ❤️👍🏻

    Just finished a German/Belgian shepherd found the hair quite difficult as there was enough for half a dozen dogs, I may go back and rework it after this excellent video. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you Emma for sharing those beautiful pastels. Your tutorials have helped me greatly. Those Unisons look heavenly. I did not see where to fill out for the drawing. Could you possibly add my name please? They would make lovely bluebells. Thank you.

    Thank you for sharing this! It's gorgeous and I need to do some fur types. I want to work larger, I always seem to work small around 8x10. Do you find pastel pencil on velour isn't as easy as with pastelmat or a sanded paper?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pencil on it's own is quite tricky on velour. I only really use the pencils for detail on top of the soft pastel. I also find that working bigger makes life easier, more room to make details. Too small can be difficult.

    Are your patron videos made using your 36 colour unison set? Or do you use other colours in these?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shannon, my tutorials are made using my full range of colour but I add colour codes on Patreon to help you see what I'm using. I make use of the colours from the 36 set a lot, but at this stage of my work I don't restrict myself to those colours. It's always possible to substitute for colours you have or layer them up to blend and mix which is a good exercise to do when you have less colours.

    Hi sorry ...dumb question time... what do you mean by hard pastel...I want to buy a tin, however, I'm confused as I found Faber Castel Polychromos Pastel Set ? is that the one?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, no question is dumb :-) Here is a link to the black hard Faber Castell I use www.jacksonsart.com/faber-castell-pitt-monochrome-crayon-burnt-black-soft?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=087408522c31eeb1f982bc0eaf81d35f
      I only really use the black but yes the Polychromos are a very nice harder pastel which also come in sets. Mostly I use Unison which are much softer but I like the FC for my darkest blacks.

    I hear you saying ; don,t fill the grain too soon, but because of your rubbing you do!

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pastelmat can take many many layers. Rubbing it in is not filling the tooth of the paper, simply smoothing it to allow more layers. If I was filling the paper it would not let me apply even more layers. It's personal preference if you want the texture of the paper to show and sometimes I do. But not in this case.

    Beautiful! Although, you've got two dogs in your painting, regarding the photo you're working from. The Shepard's head is just looking over another long haired pup's back. It's not his chest at all.

      She is teaching how to paint long hair...so what is your point? One dog, two dogs, who cares? It's about learning how to paint the coat

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Dust Bunny, it's funny how photos can be interpreted. It's definitely one dog with a very hairy chest :-)
