    Love, love, love how specific you are! Like leaving ingredients out of a recipe, so many tutorials tell you to use "a purplish color"; and try as you might you can't get it to look anywhere close. I so appreciate the fact that you give specific brands and color numbers. Thank you so much!

      Great Barbara! I'm trying to make my videos as informative as possible so that's great to hear! No use giving only some of the info, as you need to understand why you choose a certain colour to learn how to apply it in your own work. If you're interested in further tutorials I also have a Patreon channel now with longer content. I have a lot coming here on TH-cam too, but Patreon allows me to go into even more detail. Thanks again and happy pastelling!

    Excellent tutorial!! Very descriptive, very helpful. I found the real-time sections with dialogue so much more helpful than the usual sped up versions frequently seen on other channels. Also, having the reference photo on screen the whole time allowed me to see just exactly where you were going as you added color. Thank you!

      Thank you Patti for such wonderful feedback! Using the mixture of real time and time lapse footage I feel gives me the best of both worlds. They take me an age to edit though which is why I'm a bit slower to produce videos! I have three more almost ready though :-)

    I enjoy watching your videos, I'm amazed how small of marks you can make with the soft pastels, I thought that's what the pencils were for. I'm new to pastels and have learned alot like not using just pencils from this video and others. Keep them coming.

    great timing! I am just starting my first portrait of my two black mini poodles (one is a phantom so he has color marks) and getting the eyes and noses right is so key to capturing the individuality and life of the painting. Great teaching video! (btw I am studying your fur videos to help avoid my “straight lines” and get more texture in the coats) wonderful videos. Great channel. I use unisons a lot and love them. Looking forward to more videos!

    Excellent tutorial Em. It's lovely to watch a demonstration with the added dialogue. I see so many without it on here, these aren't really tutorials at all in my opinion, more of a "look at what i can do", demonstration. So with that..keep them coming when you can and happy travels. Thanks Dawn! I will them coming when I can, I aim to make at least one a month this year so we'll see! I have another nearly finished. It's the audio that takes a long time too but I agree it's necessary for it to be a useful tutorial. Yes Brocci is living a life of luxury!

    Fantastic work. You are the best. I worry that velour is difficult to transport. If you fix it by spaying, doesn't the colours darken slightly and being velour you would need a lot of fixative.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Lori, I don't use fixative these days as I have many other methods on velour to keep it stable. But you can use fixative sparingly and it won't darken much on velour like other papers. I transport my work worldwide with few issues. Check out my video on packaging a pastel atth-cam.com/video/Ef514VqXS-Y/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you for this outstanding tutorial. So rich in detail and clear instruction on one of the more difficult aspects of animal portraiture: the nose! I've been wondering for weeks whether or not to purchase pastel pencils in order to get into those tight spots. I use Unison chalks, which seemed too cumbersome for this task. Your video showed me how to use my chalks without having to spend a bundle (perhaps a few pencils vs an entire set). Thanks again. I'm your newest fan. Have a great day, Emma!

      That's great news, Emma. I look forward to seeing more videos. Btw, I ended up getting your Unison collection: the 36 animal set. It's to become the foundation palette for my animal/wildlife pastels. Thank you so much for this array of color and the blog post you wrote about why you chose the pigments for the collection. So very helpful because it's well thought out. Happy pastelling to you!

    Emma, how do you prevent the pastel falling off velour with no fixative? I see a few people complain it easily comes off, but is it just a case of pushing it in the fibres enough?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kyomii, if you check out the links in the description I have an entire blog with tips for using velour. I do many things, but one is about using thin layers and making sure it's well into the fibres. Using pastel thickly and leaving it sitting on the top of the paper will result in some falling off. But I also mount the paper to take the flexibility out of it. Many more tips on that link. Good luck :-)
