  • Fishermen on the California coastline are blessed with several different species that are fun to catch and accessible from the kayak if you know where to go. In this video, we targeted Halibut and Lingcod but that wasn't all we caught. Check out the video to see what else was out there! Dope video/yak setup. I saw your shimano reel that you gave a link for. But do you possibly have a suggestion for a reel that's a tiny bit cheaper?

      I like most Shimano reels, one that I have used before is the Shimano tekota, check it out!

    I have yet to go in the bay and or the ocean to kayak fish. Looking to go this coming year. You are the only kayak fisherman that mentions sharks. In a another video you mentioned bleeding the fish out and then bringing the fish in to not attract sharks and sea lions. Are sharks an issue in the bay or ocean up here in norcal?

    • @DieHardFishing
      @DieHardFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the bay, sharks shouldn't be an issue. However, its always a possibility when fishing salt water!

    Me and my buddy are from the Long Beach area. We are going up there September 16-18th Wed-Fri. Launching out of leffingwell Thursday AM. We have never fished this area before so any advice would be great. We do out go out far out of Newport Etc but i know the waters are different around that area. We are staying at a motel between San Simeon and Cambria. Any other launch areas we can hit the following day, thanks in advance. If you can join that would be awesome.

    you central coast? btw I lost a halibut in the same fashion because I wasnt sure if he was gaffable. A net will come in handy for fish like that.

    • @DieHardFishing
      @DieHardFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am based in the Bay Area. I would agree except I don't like to net a halibut because a net can cause what is known as "tail rot". Basically, it damages the tail and exposes it to possible infections

    Not telling you what to do...but fish and game can bust you for not having a landing net on a kayak with a min. 18 inch hoop...My friend got fined down here in Monterey. Nice vid.

    • @DieHardFishing
      @DieHardFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have heard of this law but I wonder how strictly it is enforced. I see tons of boats and kayaks out there fishing with no net on board.

    Who you calling a hoochie? 🤣. I’m always surprised how close you guys are to the shore in some of these videos. I was under the impression that you needed some pretty deep water to catch those species. Going to use this setup on my Capitola/Santa Cruz trip next month. Great video as always!

      It's hard to say because every brand is different in terms of sizing. I think a size 1 should do the trick.

    Would it be legal to use one of the smaller rock fish as bait?

    • @daveboone1547
      @daveboone1547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely, just so long as it's not one of the undersize lings he caught. Generic rockfish have no size limit, so technically he could have kept those olives and that kelp rockfish, they're just not worth the effort to clean them for the fillets you'd yield. Only fish within the RCG complex (rockfish / cabezon / greenlings) that are regulated size-wise, are lingcod (22" min), greenling (12" min), cabezon (15" min) and sculpin (10" min). Halibut are not rockfish, but also must be 22" as Daniel mentioned. Regs and limits etc also vary depending on where you're fishing. But, yeah, those smaller rockfish used as bait may have caught a nice size ling with a nose hook+stinger treble-hook near the tail rig, and that would've been totally legal. Sorry, probably "TLDR"-worthy...

    • @DieHardFishing
      @DieHardFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ^ +1. Great explanation Dave! I'll add that each rockfish you use as bait must count toward your daily bag limit.
