ILYUSHIN IL62 LANDING with incredible ENGINE SOUND - First IL-62 Freighter in the Netherlands (4K)

- The Ilyushin IL62 is an incredible airplane and currently there are just a handful of these classic airplanes which are still operating. The airline "Rada Airways" recently acquired another Ilyushin IL62 Freighter and that` s why I can` t call these videos "The last IL62 Freighter worldwide" anymore. Last year they bought a formter Il62 cargo plane from Manas Cargo and now there two of these fantastic looking airplanes operating out ot Belarus.
The Rada aircraft arrived empty at Maastricht Aachen Airport from Belarus to operate a cargo charter flight to Yangon the next day. Lots of planespotters showed up at Maastricht to see and hear this rare and classic airplane. For sure its one of the most unique planes I will spot in 2021 and of course it` s already a highlight of the year and will be seen in my year reviews of year 2021.
Only three IL62 cargo planes have been built or converted in total. All of them operated for the russian cargo airline Kapo for many years until they ceased operations. After standing around for a few years they finally found a new home with Rada Airways. Let` s hope they will continue flying for a long time cause I just can` t get enough of this classic russian planes.
The Il-62 has tricycle landing gear with an additional lightweight gear strut at the rear of the fuselage which extends when the aircraft reaches its parking position. Aircraft with rear-mounted engines are usually tail-heavy when sitting empty on the ground, and to prevent the aircraft from tipping up on its tail, various devices are used for supporting the tail - from simple "pogo stick" fixed struts on small aircraft, to light-weight extendable struts (Il-62). Aircraft like DC-9 or Boeing 727 use an airstair door under their tail which serves the dual purpose of a tail support as well as an extra door for passenger loading.
The Il-62 is the largest airliner ever built with all-manual flight controls, using steel cables, rods, pulleys, aerodynamic and weight balances, and trim tabs.[citation needed] The Il-62 also has a forward-mounted tank serving as a water ballast. This may be used when the aircraft flies empty or lightly loaded. If this is a fact, it would rank the Il-62 alongside other airliners that use ballast, notably the French Caravelle and the Soviet Tu-154. Due to the rear-mounted powerplants, the wings are aerodynamically clean, and takeoff and landing aids are employed without the disturbing effect of engine nacelles, resulting in free airflow over the dorsal wing surface. This allows the aircraft to fly through air turbulence of 16-18 m/s without affecting its stability.
Another key Il-62 trademark is the "saw tooth" ("dog-tooth") on the wing leading edge. This prominent feature acts as an aerodynamic fence vortex generator (without which the wings would be almost vortex-free), and fixed leading edge droop/slat/flap. It ensures vice-free behaviour at high angles of attack and assists efficient long-range cruise. The saw tooth removes the need for hydraulic controls, stick shakers, and stick pushers. Later models of the VC10 (for British United Airways and Ghana Airways) also adopted this feature, in their case closer to the wing tips.
Thanks for watching, new videos every tuesday and friday.
I have always thought that the Ilyushin il-62 was one of the most beautiful plane ever designed
Agree, but the concept of dual jet-engined nacelles was first developed by the british Vickers VC10 in connection with the need for long-distance routes from the shorter runways of some parts of Africa. The performance of the VC10 was such that it achieved the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a subsonic jet airliner, a record that was held for 41 years!
Agree, such an elegant and classic aircraft.
@@Hvitserk67 the French did aviation caravelle was the first to mount engines at the back.
@@katimboallan4605 Sure, but the Caravelle did not have dual jet-engined nacelles (which is what's cool in this context). When this is mentioned, the Sud Aviation Caravelle was definitely a nice aircraft and I can remember that Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) had several of these in the 70's. The main restaurant at the then Fornebu airport in Oslo (FBU 1939-1998) was named after the plane :)
i disagre, i dont want the reverse thrusters to blow up when landing
I was a passenger on the Interflug Il-62, in 1989, when I was 14. Having flown intercontinental flights since I was 6, in 1982. Coming from the American planes, the noise was a shock. It was very loud inside the cabin. Earplugs helped a little.
However, the Il-62 was very stable and smooth in flight. I remember sleeping deeply and dreaming twice.
I have never slept so well or had dreams on any other aircraft.
Quite impressive!
Only you complained, all the Boeing Douglas jets were very noisy, more than the Pavel Solovyev of IL62, don't be ridiculous.

This and the 707 are my two favourite intercontinental jets of the age. The IL-62 mad sounding engines
What a magnificent machine! Like deploying thrust reversers while flaring, so cool. Roar of the Kuznetsov engines is awesome.

That sound takes me back... not to the IL-62 but just jet engine sounds in general... growing up hearing Vickers VC-10 and BAe Trident's taking off at the nearby airport - the front end whine and rear end roar of those old jets... what a sound!
Low bypass turbofan engines (whiny ones), multiplied by 4.
Nothing like a fully laden VC10 tanker taking off at 6.30 in the morning…4 Conways giving it the bollocks…🤘🏻
Crazy how the Thrust Revereser opens before the aircraft touches down. Them Russians I tell ya.
Listen to the roar of the IL-62..... One hell of a great airplane, old but has served his purpose in the world
This sound of the D-30KU engines is simply amazing😍

Danke Jungs. Grüßt mir meinen Lieblingsport Hahn.
Great oldskool jet sound. Wish I had the opportunity to video more of these Russian birds ;)
I had a luck to fly with these Russian birds-Antonov 24, Tupulev 154, 134. It was great! 🙂

In Stölln/Germany, there is an IL-62 (Lady Agnes) that can be viewed from the outside and inside. At the same time, the IL-62 is also a registry office if you want to get married. The aircraft was placed in honor of aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal and is named after his wife.

That IL-62 sounds beautiful.
Thanks to RADA Airlines that they operate this superb aircraft. One of them ex Interflug
I flew on the IL62 several times between New York and Warsaw. I know now that I had been taking my life in my hands. Later in life, I experienced business class on the A380 - much nicer!
Great video of the beautiful IL-62M! The sound is just amazing! 👌🤩👍
Hermosa y elegante aeronave.
I worked on RAF VC-10s……..the IL 62 is just beautiful
Don't you just love it how they turn on thrust reverse in air?
Every time i see one of these I get transported back to the 60's and my favorite show

What a treat to see, hear and smell one of these old timers. I last saw them at old Larnaca International before it was developed. Thanks for posting.
Its beautiful and has the acceleration of my 1978 1.2 liter Subaru.
Beautiful elegant looking aircraft. So much classic VC 10 going on there too.
Gor-geous 👍👍👍👍
Well done! And it's very good you have a lot of information about this Russian aircraft. It is really beautiful. Thank you so much for your video! 🙂🙂🙂
Outstanding feat of engineering 60+ years ago! I flew in one back in '89, long range smooth flying aircraft but austere in some ways, however the polarized windows were a unique feature. After a one-way flight of 19 hrs (with 2 scales)
the one noticeable characteristic was that its cantilever wings appeared stiffer than those of the much familiar 727's and DC-9s which fluttered lightly from the middle section of the wing to the tips.
A marvelous airplane, produced without a single capitalist! People in the West do not understand the true nature of achievement this plane represents.
An amazing piece of work. Thank you for taking the time & making the effort to post it. 👍
the engines on landing sounds like a choir and its amazing

Whoa, ive never seen a jet throw on the reverse thrusters mid-air, thats cool!
Some russian planes are designed to do this like tu 154 and il62.On the other hand DC-8 and even Concorde could actually deploy reversers in flight to slow down since they didn`t have speedbrakes, but normally it would only be used in an emergency.

In 2002 I met the IL-62 General Designer, who went on to be the General Director of Ilyushin OKB. Gennady Novozhilik. He spoke English well and with a bit of an Oxford accent.
I love Jyliushin❤
Awesome video! The IL 62 is certainly a stunning aircraft, those engine sounds are incredible, beautiful job catching this bird in action...love it!!
Maybe it is just an illusion, but I have always had the impression that the power plants were tilted slightly tail end downward?
Well spotted, and it’s not an illusion. A characteristic of nearly all T tailed rear engined jets. I’ve no idea why though. :)
CCCP make this vintage aircraft. It’s very old plane. USSR was discontinued with vintage aircrafts because it’s not safe.
Лаконичный самолёт! Я на таком из Хабаровска летел. Как дал гари на взлёте, коленки выше ушей встали!
Звук двигателей, как и у ТУ-154 бесподобный!

Makes you think, where does he stand to film this? Most aeroports don't have viewing galleries anymore, and it doesn't seem like he stood behind a fence, you can't see the mesh...

I cant believe they hit the reversers while still in the air...
Its beautifull but as a polish citizen I just cant get over two fatal crashes that happend i my country during comunism ;)
Second one could have been avoided but ZSRR couldn know that they have faulty plane. There were no errors in soviet engineering.
Later on Polish engineers from LOT designed system for monitoring vibrations in this engines which saved a lot of iŁ's later.
There was a problematic bearing which caused the high pressure turbine to "fly off" and destroy second engine and some wires in the back of the plane. This results in no controls.
Los DC-10 perdían los motores. Airplane killer

That thing sounds incredible
Look at the wobble of those horizontal stabs @1:03. Great capture of a rare bird though.
A friend described this sound as "the sound of pressing all the keys of an organ at the same time."
I remember seeing this back in late 80's as a 5 yrs old Boy 😂... They would fly directly from USSR to AFRICA without any refueling, those SOLOVIEV Engines had a distinctive sound that set them apart from the rest.
"GOOD OLD DAYS"
Sehr gut!
Beautiful footage but most of all I love the sound of those engines.
Its surprising the put the thrust reversers on during the final approach itself

Well, as far I can see this isn't a Dutch airport. That's because the mentioned port of Aachen/Maastricht has a different lay-out as shown at departure! And the environmental measurers in the Netherlands won't allow the smoking engines at landing.
So it will probably be Luik/Liege airport.
They dont build airplanes like that anymore. IL 62 has had a very long career. I once flew on OK Jet, Czech Airlines from JFK to YMX , in First Class in 1984. Best $95 I ever spent. Loved that noise on takeoff and the suspense of the 35 second takeoff roll!
OMG! Absolutely amazing airplane!

Nice Aircraft 😍😁👍
I was lucky enough to fly on a Tu-154 a few times. One flight was up the back with a window seat next to the turbine.
Tu-154 was a Soviet legend. I flew it once or twice in my childhood.
Yes , I remember IL62 at Heathrow the engineer throwing water over the undercarriage . The wheels would overheat when braking after landing. In the cabin , a Russian observer would watch the cabin crew in case they tried talking to us.
Yes, they usually had the equivalent of a Political Commissar onboard, whose sole purpose was to ensure the crew didn't attempt to defect or otherwise engage in activities that could be construed as being a spy for the UK or similar. The slightest perceived infraction by any member of the crew could result in their losing international flight duty status. This is why sometimes the flight attendants on the plane might appear uptight, brunt, non-smiling or even seemingly rude. They were probably already on report and under considerable scrutiny (back in the Soviet era) - so they had to appear aloof while serving the foreign passengers on the plane - just to keep the prestige (and marginally better pay) from flying international routes.
What a glorious noise it makes!
Great stuff CS 👍
