Something interesting about this engine - you can use the case, piston and liner, and mate an OPS .65 front end, crank, and rear disc valve assembly up with it. The holes in the front and rear housings need to be opened up one drill size to accommodate the tiny center to center distance discrepancy. Other than that they are a drop in fit. And.. the MDS piston needs a tiny relief to clear the top of the disc valve housing. I have built one up and will get it on the test stand soon. The idea was to come up with a snotty sport engine that would run strongly on .40 size airframes and 10-8 to 10-10 props. Kinda defeats the $50 bit, but if you have engine parts lying around..
Old good MDS... I use to race powerboat models in Lithuania using MDS, they give stunning performance, but you have to put a lot of work into them. I never had a broken crankshaft, but I had a broken conrod every second race:) Just had to mill my own ones...
A friend gave me a locked up Merco 61, did not want to disturb all of the internals so I took the plastic carb off and gently boiled it up in washing up liquid. Dried it out, gave it a good feed of castor oil and it was absolutely finel
Try a Great Plains super sportster 60. one of the easiest kits to build and one fun plane. I built 3 of these and they still give me smile 26 years later.
most of my mds motors made good power with a perry carb but they do not last long. Mostly piston & conrod failure . I even wore out the ball bearings. But my old super tigers are still a dream come true. You can buy 4 of those and the tiger will out run them all . So what is really cheaper ? and a super tiger 60 sure as hell ain`t slow.
So, to sum up. I as for properly correlated information on all aspects of Nitro and petrol engines. The good, bad, fantastic and the crap...with tips, hints and recommendations. Including tuning and repairing. Also, new "cut out the middle man" videos... showing how to avoid paying through the nose for things you can do or make yourself. Start with mixing fuel. All good stuff! Now you can carry on and ignore me:-)
I always love your videos's I have just pulled out my old nexus 30 which has a MDS 38 on it. I am keen if any viewers are watching if they have parts small or large that take up space I am happy to buy off them. But also I wanted to ask you whats your view on carb cleaning? I am loving pulling out all my old models, RC helicopter/ planes, cars and still love flying the multirotors. Thank you again.... you will notice I post on your current posts.. but stumbled across this old vid. lol what a differance from your video and also your attitude.. lol. I love it. Keep it up please.
Ummm I have two major questions: 1. I have a nitro trainer and the wires in it are a mess. They even manage to interfere with the movement of the servos. Could you do a video on how to arrange them properly.
The manual of my MDS 38 says to run the new engine 3 minutes with the plane on the ground. After that the plane should be started and be flown with a rich needle setting. Do you think this procedure is right?
i have a idea can you use the motor in a rc truck.iam wondering i have a vintage tamiya from the 70s that iam restoring just want to build something out of the ordinary.let me no awesome videos very cool.
Because, there are good and bad engines in just about all makes. A proper list of as many as possible is what I need. We all need it. Like a chart. With an overall score for each engine. Like Which do it. It would be so useful. As soon as I know the engine size I need I could consult the chart and quickly learn what would be a good engine for a good price. Do you know how badly this is needed?
Does it come with a pipe. They were sold in the UK for a short while, in the 80's I think, with a pipe until Ripmax realised they could double their profit by charging for it separately. The one we had in our club was absolutely terrifying ( and loud ) when it came on the pipe with the right size prop.
i was given a brand new MDS 48 from a friend as a present in the winter..... i sooooooooooooo loved the performance of the engine... but now that its getting hotter i seem to find it difficult to get the engine to run good, i think its due to high temp.I dont think this engine was designed with such a hot weather in mind
Some People say these Engines are Copies of Webra Engines? I also have an MDS .61, but mine got a side exhaust, Carburetor seams to be the Same. The Cylinderhead of mine is eloxated orange, like the Prop driver.
2. I fly off a mud airfield and in India there is so much dust in the sky that my plane comes down all brown. Can you tell me ways to keep my engine clean? The engine is all slimy and very hard to clean. The rest of the model I have managed to keep shiny, but I just can't make the engine shine(or even look clean)
Bruce. At my club MDS is a swear word. I've never heard a good word about them. Now I've just seen you getting all excited about this one:-) I've come to trust your judgement...so sometime is going on. I'd suggest that the lads are doing something differently. From what I've seen, they tend to cut out after a few minutes. And they don't run evenly. I'd love to find good engines at a good price. I'm paying for a bomb for OS engines. I wonder if you might consider expanding your engine section?..
This was my first engine. I used it on a Canary 40 Phoenix. It worked quite hard, as I bought it already used, and it seems like who used it, really used it. I hardly managed to carbure it, (helped by a mechanic friend) and it normally stopped in the air, while doing loops or so. Even so, I did love it. Really fast, and really noisy !! I love it, but I would like to have a new one, to see how they work on their first flight .... Check my channel to see the engine flying.
Ive been looking for a beginner nitro helicopter kit i want to build it myself but can only seem to find pre assembled kits anyone know any good kits for a beginner.
For example. Because of hearsay I would never look at this MDS of yours. But you say that out of the other crap they make, this one is OK. There must be so many more. I know that you can't know them all. But you know more than me. I have to stick to what I know for sure. I know I could get cheaper. But are they any good? We aren't all electric Bruce. I like electric. But, in bad weather I can turn to nitro. Come on Bruce:-) New videos. Nitro! You tend to neglect IC a bit.
a P51 or a spitfire something WW2 ish i actually have a 1960's top flite p51 mustang control line kit plane im looking to be rid of. its 32inch wing spam and sized for a .35 motor. it has steam formed bulsa cowling with original instructions. if you are intrested id love to see it built and flown on youtube. lol message me if you are intrested.
Nice! ...lookin forward to the rebuild!
"And look...It even comes with a glow plug."
I'm sold. Sign me up for 10. Lol.
Sold out Bruce. :-) I had 1 a long time ago 1977 in a Zline 8 feet wing span. Nice motor....
I have an MRS 32 I think is the size. Great running engine was a favorite in my little profile. Good to see video about MDS thanks for posting
Always enjoy your videos!
Damn, imagine finding these today!!

I had MDS .68 and it was a monster, sold it cheap in rcgroups classifieds as I mostly fly .40 size planes.
Nice one Bruce!!

Bruce, that is interesting. Regarding the Supers Stunts 40 (thought of you), here is a video I shoot at our club this week.
A friend gave me a locked up Merco 61, did not want to disturb all of the internals so I took the plastic carb off and gently boiled it up in washing up liquid. Dried it out, gave it a good feed of castor oil and it was absolutely finel
4:46 "I can FEEL the power!" XD
Das Ugly Stik for Das Ugly Engine will be the bees knees.
Great video. Very interesting and a good example of ussr engineering
A F22 would be great.
Nice video
Greetings from Belgium
Erik

These engines really, really kick ass.
Scratchbuild a flying trainer clone designed to withstand the stress :)

OK, so you are so well versed in electronics it boggles the mind, AND you're a machinist is there a limit to your talents good sir?
wonder if you can get the crank Cryo Stress Relieved?
how about that park flier you made out of corflute?
Ummm I have two major questions:
1. I have a nitro trainer and the wires in it are a mess. They even manage to interfere with the movement of the servos. Could you do a video on how to arrange them properly.
P51, P38 if you buy a second, FW190, Spitfire. Four excellent homes for that little thing.
I still say Dehaviland beaver but you could do the old p51 if you really think the beaver want hold up
Ps you changed your user name but your accent and voice is still the same!!!!!! lol I love it.
Do the right thing Bruce - build a proper pattern ship, thats a 70's design like a Deception
I just wondering how do you install that engine on the model. Where the exhaust go if you put it on a trainer?
The manual of my MDS 38 says to run the new engine 3 minutes with the plane on the ground. After that the plane should be started and be flown with a rich needle setting. Do you think this procedure is right?
How about the Alpha Jet from Austars?
I have an os 91 that has gummed up from storage. How do i get the con rod off the crank for disassembly?
Where can I find the video on this being rebuilt?
i have a idea can you use the motor in a rc truck.iam wondering i have a vintage tamiya from the 70s that iam restoring just want to build something out of the ordinary.let me no awesome videos very cool.
Put it in an ultrasport 60 with retracts in it. Those ultrasports are great planes (my friend has one).
Do you happen to have a carb for an OS46? :-D

the engine will sell ?
put it in a ripmax 40 they are great planes and are able to go quite fast
you can put it in a SIG King Cobra
it will be the perfect fit and plane
Ive been looking for a beginner nitro helicopter kit i want to build it myself but can only seem to find pre assembled kits anyone know any good kits for a beginner.
You don't need a lighter prop. You need an engine with a rear intake!
amen
1980's? thats back when you were like 70 some years old right?
Russian JUNK hope you pickup 6 or 7 cranks. ever wonder way they still have them in stock

Put it in a Diamond Dust flying wing
@xjet Maybe a little work with a fine stone would eliminate some stress points? I am also a big fan of some mild porting. Check my videos. LOL
Do you have a mail address for contact?
a super chipmunk
I did a 20 chipmunk with a k&b 40
Suggest a fan jet model, front of a jet profile tail (yes it's a real aircraft) turning a ducted fan in the middle

Tacky HC, tacky.
MDS are junk compaired to O.S. and Saito. Real Junk.
zippy OS are OK depending on the engine. Don't hold a candle to YS or Rossi.
