Looking Back On Disney's (Somewhat Creepy) Animatronic Puppet TV Shows

  • In anticipation of Tim Burton's Dumbo remake, we're looking back at two shows developed in the 1980's by Ken Forsse of the Teddy Ruxpin fame.
"Welcome To Pooh Corner" and "Dumbo's Circus" delighted kids on the Disney Channel, in spite of their costumes being a little on the unnerving side. Let's take a look at the simpler times of cable TV.
EPISODES OF WELCOME TO POOH CORNER I HAVE UPLOADED:

Another fact about Dumbo's Circus, that you forgot to mention, is that Paul Fusco worked on the series, prior to creating ALF.

I really wish they'd bring back this stuff on Disney Plus eventually. I'd love to watch it again. I know if you didn't grow up watching it it probably looks creepier, but for me it was AMAZING at the time and just plain nostalgic now. I watched more Pooh Corner than Dumbo's Circus but I wish I'd watched more now that there's so much of it missing.

I didn't grow up watching it but personally, I don't mind the Dumbo's circus characters. I actually think there pretty cute. The Pooh series, though, was a little weird, mostly because of what he said about them always being hand drawn and animated beforehand.

I may not have grown up watching either of these, but I understand and respect that everyone had their own shows that they watched. Like how I grew up with The Book Of Pooh, which is on Disney+. If either of these shows made it on Disney+, I would give it a try. As I am curious about them. Especially if the Sherman brothers wrote some of the songs

I remember both!! I was never scared of them I just enjoyed the show's. I remember the stranger danger episode mostly the gang talking about what to do when you run into a stranger and even showed clips of real kids dealing with stranger danger themselves mostly strangers trying to kidnap them. I don't remember the one you just showed of Pooh talking about people touching you; Maybe it only showed once or I just don't remember it. I never saw the Dumbo episode of him losing his magic feather and I so agree with you! That is a weird episode to make when we all know he never needed the feather in the first place. Looking back on these shows now I'm more impressed on how they were made rather than the episodes themselves! The technology used back then was amazing and really brought the characters to life.

Also Phil Baron & Will Ryan provided voices in Teddy Ruxpin, with Phil being Teddy’s voice.

Fun fact: The person who directed the Winnie the Pooh Too Smart for Strangers special, Ron Underwood, would later on direct Pluto Nash, Holidays in Handcuffs, and that Godawful live-action remake of The Year Without a Santa Claus where the Miser brothers have hookers for minions for some reason.

I know it isn't the case and all, but how come I get the feeling that Dumbo only had an orangutan because they planned a Jungle Book based live action series at some point and already had the makings of a King Louie suit/puppet?

Off subject have you ever heard of Adventures in Wonderland? It was another Disney Channel show that featured Alice visiting Wonderland every episode where she would meet with the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts etc. They also modernized it so it was very 90s. Tweedledee and Tweedledum looked like hip-hop singers.

I used to watch Dumbo's Circus. . . But all I remember was that there was one episode where Q.T. cut down a tree but couldn't remember what to say when it's falling. . . And the tree just swayed back and forth like it was waiting for him. . . And then he yelled "Timber" and it landed on Sebastian, of course.
Which ties into the only other thing I remember: That Sebastian was the first "villain" I ever felt bad for and wished would catch a break.

I didn't grow up with either of these, but there's actually another Winnie the Pooh puppet TV show called "The Book of Pooh", which aired on Playhouse Disney in the early 2000s. That one I did watch as a little girl, and the puppets in that show looked much cuter, far less creepy, and more like their animated counterparts than the ones in "Welcome to Pooh Corner".
So, the problem wasn't giving the characters realistic proportions, and moving mouths, it was the designs of the costumes. (I don't know what they were thinking when giving Pooh more normal looking eyes. They just make Pooh look like he wants to eat my soul. Ugh.)

I noticed some of the Disney shows for preschoolers have lost episodes and its not just these shows. Shows I grew up with like Bear in the Big Blue House, PB&J Otter, Out of the Box, and Stanley also have episodes that aren't available anywhere

I don't remember the live-action Dumbo show, but I DO remember Welcome to Pooh Corner... Vaguely, I remember almost nothing about it other than how disturbing the costumes were (and also I thought I swallowed a penny while watching it, but that's neither here nor there). I DID enjoy watching the "Too Smart for Strangers" special as an adult, though, it's unintentionally hilarious.

If you had TLC’s Ready Set Learn in the late 90’s-Early 2000’s before Paz the Penguin, you might remember that show, Skinnamarink TV starring Sharon, Lois, and Bram with Ella the Elephant and CC CopyCat the blue striped cat with a red vest, and in the Crazy Jake’s Segment Of The Show, they used the Laugh In Doors.

I saw couple of episodes of Dumbo Circus as a kid. This might be the nostalgia talking. But I rather enjoyed it, especially now that Dumbo could talk.
As for the magic feather, maybe the writers wanted to put in something familiar from the movie to serve as a gimmick.
Whether or not they made the right decision, well I'll leave that up for you to decide.

Yeah I had Disney during the 80s so I did watch these 2 shows a lot hehe. I was devastated when my family couldn't afford cable anymore sometime during the 90s. But yeah these were some of the first shows I remembered, even before animated classics like Ducktales.
Also, correct me if I am wrong, but the narrator from the Pooh show, isn't he the same Narrator from the original Winnie the Pooh shorts?
I was never scared of animatronics either. Maybe it's because I started seeing them at a very young age because my family went to Chuck E. Cheese and Show Biz Pizza, and other performances that had them.

Oh yes, I used to watch Welcome To Pooh Corner and Dumbo’s Circus back in the day. This is when the Disney Channel was actually good, if not the best. Nowadays it’s nothing but silly and incredibly saccharine-y sitcoms involving stereotypical teen and tween situations and other cheap garbage. No offense to viewers of the 1997 to present Disney Channel.

I remember, however, having a VHS recording of an episode or 2 of Dumbo's Circus, and it was, without a doubt, one of the weirdest fucking things I watched as a kid (Among other programs and movies my parents had recorded over the the course of the first half of the '80's).

I watched both of these as re-runs on Disney Channel in the early 90s. I loved Pooh Corner and absolutely hated Dumbo's Circus. No emotional connection to Dumbo I guess and I probably hadn't even seen the movie back then, but Pooh has always been a favorite. I remember identifying a lot with Eeyore because I was a depressed child growing up in an abusive home and it was extremely comforting to see a character who was sad like me but who was also accepted and had friends. I remember Pooh's show being so warm and then Dumbo's Circus would come on right after and not hold a candle to it.
