  • I wrote this for a musical production I was in called "The Singing Cowboys and the Starry-Eyed Girl" that was performed on the Billie Limacher Bicentenntial Park Stage about 15 years ago. I was one of the singing cowboys. This was the only song in the whole show that remotely cowboyish. :)
    COWBOYS LOVE THE MOON
    by James Burkey
    G
    Cowboys love the moon
    C
When they're riding on the range
    G
    Cowboys love the moon
    C
    Lighting up their way
    D C G
It's a lonely life on the trail
    D C
The ride can't end too soon
    D C G
At night you dream of bein' home again
    D C G
And your best friend's that old yeller moon
Cows at night are a jumpy bunch
Yer afraid to make a sound
All you can do is quietly enjoy the night
    The moonlight cascading down
    It's a lonesome thing this cowboy's life
The ride can't end too soon
Every step takes you farther from home
But at least you've got the yeller moon
    When my watch is over
I like to lie out 'neath the sky's canopy
    Makes me feel less alone
To know the moon's watching o'er me
It's not so lonely out here at night
    Daylight always comes too soon
    I s'pose the sun's purty an all
    But cowboys love the moon
    Cowboys love the moon.
