Outdoes the Germans? Surely you jest. I am a huge fan of Lenny but as he aged he slowed down like a fine watch. Listen to his earlier LVB and we are talking 5-8 minutes faster. Listen to this, Felix Weingartner conducting the 5th in a magnificent performance that is breathtaking! BTW, to really learn about prior years, look up any of the RS3D archive. I’m 52 years old and have studied classical piano for 48 years, and the Beethoven 5 with Lenny still makes me feel invulnerable, mighty and triumphant against anxiety and depression. Surely composing this afforded Beethoven the same katharsis!

Anyone who has performed probably understands, and saw Leonard wipe the tears from his eyes just after the last note. He had to know that this was one of his great accomplishments.
Headphones are a MUST if you want to savor every nuance in the 3rd movement. Impeccable performance. I'll never figure out what is going on with anyone who gave this a thumbs-down, and frankly as long as I never cross paths with them I will let it be. So sad that Ludwig Van never heard this masterpiece the way most of us can.
Having performed this many times as a French hornist. I have to say that Bernstein is the best at conducting this symphony, every time he conducts he will make small adjustments to it and by looking at him he would let you know if you were off key or other mistakes. He was one of the most engaged conductors and could draw more out of a orchestra than anyone else I had played under. If you watch many of his concerts you will notice these small but very important subtleties. I do miss him and his music. Another one who followed in his shoes is the great John Williams.
I think if I could come back as any human being in history, it would be as L.B., minus the smoking and minus some life style proclivities. Even with those reservations about him, I have to say I admire him probably the most of any human being who made an impact in any field, upon the public and upon his art. I was privileged to see him in person, years ago, when he brought his son to the theater in New York where I was Ass't. Mgr. to see "Catch-22." What a powerful, charismatic in-person presence he personified. Yes!

I have listened to, God knows, how many performances of this work, and can unabashedly proclaim this one to be definitive: Bernstein doesn't miss a single nuance, nor is his interpretation exaggerated or rushed as is so often the case. A real "bravo" for both Beethoven AND Bernstein!
I miss Leonard Bernstein but I am HAPPY that we have recordings of him conducting and giving lectures! He is missed but his legacy lives on! Thank also to Maestro Beethoven for his enduring masterful compositions he left for the world to hear!

With all due respect, it's about time you realized TH-cam does not put ads in particular places. They pop up after every number of minutes that you are watching something. There are many comments here about the conductor. They are valid as far as they go. The real genius lies within the composer. IMO, this is the most magnificent piece of music ever written.
Yes. The musical insight and intuition Beethoven had created this amazing piece of pure music. In my opinion, on par with Bach considering the terrible handicaps which Beethoven endured while creating his music - going deaf, & family problems. I think Bach's support system (like 20 kids) and stability enabled him to produce much more stuff for longer... But some of Bach's compositions contain similar insight and intuition from a different time with different instruments and orchestras.
This symphony by Beethoven was a massive turning point in music, this proformence is unbelievable conductor and orchestra in total perfection, the second movement is very very powerful it should get more credit .
4th last movement (25:05) clearly the best ever written by LVB, IMHO. The final section seems will never end. As soon as you wait for the dramatic a epic culmination a fist of oboes, a solo of french corno and a flute mantain the romance with the cathartic last part of this master piece. Eleven minutes of pure energy coming from the very universe until our souls. Magnificent!

marvelous conducting! thanks for posting it. I like the way Berstein takes the dynamic of the score and make them enourmosly wide, from very light pianissimo to majestic fortissimo. Additionaly, Bernstein always get the right tempo for every part of the score. Really marvelous, it's a must to enjoy.
Written in 4 movements....The 2nd and 4th movements remain my clear favorites of this Symphony. The first Allegro sure gets people going, and is a great set up for 2nd movement which is the great Andante. The last two are so dynamic, and builds to the fury of the powerful finish. Among the very best Symphony pieces ever written by a human. Thank you Beethoven.
I have watched several performances of the 5th symphony of Beethoven on TH-cam; this version conducted by Leonard Bernstein is the best rendition I have found. The audio and visual are so perfectly enjoyable. Bernstein was always so completely engrossed with the music when he conducted. Excellent!
Maestro Bernstein's music and personality reach the heart. Always. And yes, his technical mastery is a huge part of it. However, with such a twinkle in his eye and his impersonation of many moods, he makes the individual musician feel he is right there with him or her. It almost doesn't matter whether he conducts one way, or another. Genius.
In the final analysis, you may well be right. Klemperer, Ksrajan, Bohm, Giulini, Furtwangler may excel in this repertoire, but in the end, there is really no one like Bernstein for this and any of the other Beethoven symphonies.

By far, the finest performance of this masterpiece. Bernstein masterfully summons its full force --and without rushing it! So many performances of the great masterpieces are RUINED by an exaggerated tempo! I love Newmontaigne's comment about being made to "feel invulnerable, mighty, and triumphant against anxiety and depression." Too bad that drug addicts had never been introduced to Beethoven!
My mother was so disappointed. She thought she had a genius for a son when at age 3 I would pull the 7 record 78 rpm set of this wonderful symphony off the shelf, set it on the record changer and sit rapt listening to it. Sadly, for her and fortunately for me, I turned out to be far from genius material but this piece of music has been at my core since then. That well worn set was Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra and this wonderful Bernstein interpretation comes the closest to that of all the multitude of versions I have heard in my lifetime. Thanks for putting this up.
Amazing performance . I like bernstein and karajans performances of beethoven symphonies. Both different personslities and styles . Both are sorely missed now. But their legacys will remain forever.

Orchestra and conductor underplay somewhat the tension and vehemence of the opening movement to make the finale the culmination. With careless treatment this movement can get tedious - especially with the exposition repeated - but here there are slight, subtle increments in intensity, loudness, excitement that keep it alive and satisfying to the very end.
If I'm not mistaken, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is playing. I know the musicians, I saw everyone at Beethoven's fifth concert performed by Pollini and Karl Boehm in 1979
With Berstein it is the most emphatic poetic version, exciting and full of tenderness of the deaf. The human species is surprised there, steep in itself, demanding itself seeking greatness
Bernstein is remembered for conducting the New York Phil all those years, but I think he reached his apex with the VPO. He brings such energy and fire to great works and to operas like Fidelio and Falstaff. I love his work with the VPO.

If time travel were possible...a must stop would be to see and hear Ludwig's first performance of the 5th. One of the greatest pieces of music of all time.
Beethoven reminds me that even if I were to become handicapped in some way - I could still code for computers or fix cars. How? Because I've played instruments, written code and fixed cars for years. I see the genius he is - he used his memory and mind to "feel" the music like when I'm writing code without testing. He felt vibrations in music like a tuner like I feel vibrations in cars or listen to their sounds and just know what's wrong with them without even touching them. It's years of getting to know something and being intimate with it. He was a true genius and a gift to mankind.
I wonder what's the meaning of all this critics based on the tempo. Really, why don't you empty yourselves of your self with all of your ficticious opinions and just listen to the music with all your heart? This is so wonderful and powerful!
One of the memorable things to come out of the sixties was Leonard Bernstein's young peoples concerts, broadcast Saturday afternooon's in black and white.
This version feels so alive, as if I am walking in a summer meadow with the composer himself and see what he hears in his mind. There's nothing too static about it :)
You know, I'm not sure if the closing C major chord is in tune, if I'm mistaken please correct me, but it's that detail that makes this performance my absolute favorite, it's so emotional and human, not even a missed note could ruin a performance like this! Some of the best conductors have faith in the wrong notes and even if it isn't wrong, I still adore Bernstein in all his being.

The 5th Symphony itself is magnificent but there are special moments in the 5th that carry me to the doorsteps of the other world.

Maestro Bernstein's music and personality reach the heart. Always. And yes, his technical mastery is a huge part of it. However, with such a twinkle in his eye and his impersonation of many moods, he makes the individual musician feel he is right there with him or her. It almost doesn't matter whether he conducts one way, or another. Genius.
This is hands down, my favorite performance of this symphony. It's subtle and nuanced and rousing in all the right places.
In the final analysis, you may well be right. Klemperer, Ksrajan, Bohm, Giulini, Furtwangler may excel in this repertoire, but in the end, there is really no one like Bernstein for this and any of the other Beethoven symphonies.
Barenboim does a great job on 3rd, 7th and 9th but lacks on 5th, this definitely pips it. Shame it's not up to modern sound quality expectations
...and it has the repeat in the 4th movement, which makes it very special.

I can't believe those people in the audience are just sitting there in the 4th movement I would be moving and leaning forward This production is spectacular.
All involved people, orchestra musicians, audience and everyone else at the theater, so lucky to witness the genius of Leonard Bernstein !!! I am jealous, but also greatful for being able to see great Maestro conducting even if it’s a recording. Look at his eyes. He is so kind and majestic !!!!

By far, the finest performance of this masterpiece. Bernstein masterfully summons its full force --and without rushing it! So many performances of the great masterpieces are RUINED by an exaggerated tempo! I love Newmontaigne's comment about being made to "feel invulnerable, mighty, and triumphant against anxiety and depression." Too bad that drug addicts had never been introduced to Beethoven!
The 18:15 mark of the second movement is one of my favorite phrases of any piece of music - so European, so Beethoven!

My mother was so disappointed. She thought she had a genius for a son when at age 3 I would pull the 7 record 78 rpm set of this wonderful symphony off the shelf, set it on the record changer and sit rapt listening to it. Sadly, for her and fortunately for me, I turned out to be far from genius material but this piece of music has been at my core since then. That well worn set was Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra and this wonderful Bernstein interpretation comes the closest to that of all the multitude of versions I have heard in my lifetime.

Amazing performance . I like bernstein and karajans performances of beethoven symphonies. Both different personslities and styles . Both are sorely missed now. But their legacys will remain forever.

Orchestra and conductor underplay somewhat the tension and vehemence of the opening movement to make the finale the culmination.
With careless treatment this movement can get tedious - especially with the exposition repeated - but here there are slight, subtle increments in intensity, loudness, excitement that keep it alive and satisfying to the very end.
This man was a genious. There should be a motion picture about his life. Sin Ian Mckellen would be perfect for Bernstein.

If I'm not mistaken, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is playing. I know the musicians, I saw everyone at Beethoven's fifth concert performed by Pollini and Karl Boehm in 1979

Bernstein is remembered for conducting the New York Phil all those years, but I think he reached his apex with the VPO. He brings such energy and fire to great works and to operas like Fidelio and Falstaff. I love his work with the VPO.

Beethoven reminds me that even if I were to become handicapped in some way - I could still code for computers or fix cars. How? Because I've played instruments, written code and fixed cars for years. I see the genius he is - he used his memory and mind to "feel" the music like when I'm writing code without testing. He felt vibrations in music like a tuner like I feel vibrations in cars or listen to their sounds and just know what's wrong with them without even touching them. It's years of getting to know something and being intimate with it. He was a true genius and a gift to mankind.
I wonder what's the meaning of all this critics based on the tempo. Really, why don't you empty yourselves of your self with all of your ficticious opinions and just listen to the music with all your heart? This is so wonderful and powerful!

You know, I'm not sure if the closing C major chord is in tune, if I'm mistaken please correct me, but it's that detail that makes this performance my absolute favorite, it's so emotional and human, not even a missed note could ruin a performance like this! Some of the best conductors have faith in the wrong notes and even if it isn't wrong, I still adore Bernstein in all his being.
