I just installed two of these plastic compression connectors, not even an hour ago, it bursted twice on me. You diffintly have to use channel locks on this Home Depot item. Believe me. We're all good now after tightening down with two channel lock pliers! Amen, brother......
Thank you, I had an idea on how to repair a leak; however, your video is extremely helpful and informative. I have to take a look at a leak at my sisters property. She was quoted $1, 200.00 to fix a leak. The high price was because "Need to break cement". The cement is already cracked! All I need is to lift it with a crowbar. Wish me luck. I'm fixing it for a hamburger as pay, just like Wimpie...😄
Only video I could find that gave me a clear understanding of what I’m dealing with. Thank you sir.
It's a story, video, and so perfect, I'm lucky to see it in Korea.
Thank you 🙂
Nice Job Pete!
I’d like to make one correction. Having been an aircraft hydraulic specialist for 12 years, I can say with 100% confidence that petroleum won’t breakdown rubber seals. Actually it will preserve them, provide a water repellent, and will help the seals expand. It is required to put petrolatum(vasoline) on seals before installing them on an airplane, and during cold weather when seals contract, putting petroleum on seals will make them expand and will stop small leaks. We usually would do that on actuators and struts in the winter time.
Ive worked on F18E in the Navy and we also used pet to lube o-rings. However, when I was in trade school the instructors always say to never use it as it will break down the rubber. Also every resource out there will say the same, dont use it
Confusing!?
I 100% back this as a former Hydraulics Mechanic- E3 AWACS
I learn a lot from this video ,thank you, now i know, what the plumber will do on tomarrow when he change my main pipe
Really helpful , and will continue to watch your videos . Saved me money doing this Sam thing on my own .
Glad I could help
Thank you very much. Very helpful and very interesting to me. I would have liked to have seen the location where you shut off and turned on your water, but you did a great job.
very nice. thank you. pick up a pvc cutter..the ones with a ratchet. hvac supply places will carry them. can't live without it.
Thanks. Very detailed information…The only time I use the word hate is when I’ve got to do a plumbing repair!
for the back fill instead of soil/dirt , play ground sand , lowes/home depot , for future removal , fast access to joints , pressure regulators , ball valves ,etc , cover with plastic , milk carton , think winter time , 35 yr home owner ,
hope this helps
Nice job! Great video showing all the details
Thank you 👍
One of the more intelligent people I've seen when it comes to prepping a copper pipe for a Sharkbite fitting. Ideally of course you would want factory fresh copper deburred on inside and out. Most people don't understand how bad those fitting can weep or leak when you sand them. You should have just sweated on a 3/4" copper fitting as you had a union and a slip coupling. The Sharkbite was completely unnecessary.
👍
Jeff M, I agree, I would have been scared to use a Sharkbite there.
Thank you very much for sharing your video. It’s very helpful for people had the same problem as you have. Great job !❤️💜👍🙏
Thanks for the info on petroleum jelly damaging rubber seals, (that probably explains why my rubber tap washers keep breaking down.) 👍
Best wishes
Pete.
Glad the video was helpful 👍
Very good instructions, didn’t leave anything out like most DIY videos 👍
Thank you
@@petebeasttexashomesteading he did leave something out..the wrap around the sharkbite
Nicely done; thank you. BTW a PVC pipe cutter would give you a square, burr-free cut.
Thanks for the tips and tricks🎉
Thanks for creating this very detailed video!
Great video. Great explanation of the steps!!
Thank you
Great video, you do it all Pete.
Thanks 👍
Great job man and very Hard work in Plumbing 👍👍
I had to buy the grey fittings that are thicker & can handle higher PSI because the white ones often fail (crack & leak). They cost slightly more but worth it!
Great video! I think I have a tree root that went through my water main. Still trying to find where the leak is 😊 Thanks!
I personally would have went with a ProPress adapter on the copper pipe, a pvc to PEX adapter on the pvc, and a PEX ball valve in the box. 4 crimp rings and done.
Personal preference. I just do not ever use sharkbite fittings, they always eventually leak.
I have used compression valves on low pressure lines and they work. Not sure on high pressure main. One suggestion instead of the compression union is to use PVC in the shape of a u or half square to bend.
Great video. Much appreciated.
Excellent video. Thank you.
Great job, sir 👏
Could you have used a coupler with glue instead of the compression coupling ?
Yes that is another option. No, cut needed if you need to replace the compression coupler again.
Does anyone know if I should use a metal valve instead of that plastic one I ask cuz I live in south Tx and sometimes plastic does not last sun heat destroy plastic ? Any recommendations thx in advance
👍👍Bob villa would be impressed.
Thanks 🙂
Great job. I would’ve avoided putting pipe dope on inner pvc thread. That extra dope may have been pushed into the water line and maybe change the taste of water. Just an observation.
Could solder a threaded adapter to the copper pipe and eliminate the shark bite underground.
Thank you very much.
Thank you!
You did good. 👍
Thank you
Thanks
very detail video,thank you sir!
Thank you
@@petebeasttexashomesteading Why used SharkBite for Underground water line Connection....????
Is it Made for Underground purpose...????
@@Honestandtruth007 The shark bite is not truly under ground or making ground contact but in a valve box.
in my experience with PVC as an electrician sometimes a person will use more bonding compound causing a build up inside the pipe causing a restriction in size. with smaller pipe
Good job buddy 👍
Thank you
@@petebeasttexashomesteading never use sharkbites coming from a real plumber
Ty
I would have glued that pie back together.. get ready to dig it up after a while, water pipes move, vibrate. I have used them for temporary repair but never permanent.
You are correct. Compression fittings are for temporary repair only. And illegal in California to use under a slab. Give it 2 or 3 years and you're back repairing again.
agaveman< I agree, I'm not even sure I would trust the Sharkbite in that situation.
Thanks 🙏
Hey Pete,
I've been getting letters from some company about coverage offered for "The exterior water line that runs on my property," at a shockingly low rate of sixty five dollars a year. Eye rolling intensifies.
Can you explain why this coverage isn't a good idea, from a homeowner's perspective?
nice plumbing expertise. Iron pipes for water should be banned by law, but I still see some homedepot employees offering them with in connection to copper.
Very true
Thank You 😎
why trust a shark bite and a compression sleeve? Should have used a soldered on male adapter and a glued in coupler
Thx
Nice job Pete! How many times did you have to go back to the store? ;-) I always have to go back at least once or twice for plumbing repairs.... That's the rule even though my son in Austin is a plumber. I love that Sharkbite product. It has made plumbing repairs so much easier. I would recommend placing brick or gravel to support the pipe when you fill that hole.
Thank you
Should you not tighten the union first?
I have just two questions, what part of the country are you in that you would have your waterline so close to the surface? Second question, Why would you trust an underground connection to a Shark Bite fitting? This is not a criticism. I'm just not familiar with this kind of project. Thanks.
How did you manage to get the voice so well along with visuals. Where you using a wired collar mike or a bluetooth mic?
I was using a Comica model number CVM-WM100 wireless lapel microphone.
Why would you put a coupling in place? Why not just glue it. You’ve added 2 more gaskets that are more apt to fail than a glued union?
Heavy task Pete you have done here, amazing. I hope this will last forever as it should return only with this way because your back must have suffered a lot :)
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Duncan Xander Instablaster ;)
@Forest Milo i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm trying it out atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Forest Milo It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out!
@Duncan Xander No problem =)
On a private well do you just have to turn off the pump and water stops coming in the house?
Yes you can do that but there should be a shut off valve just after the pressure tank.
We have had those compression style fail, you should use glue or sharkbite.
Right. That compression fitting is fine for after the valve but not before.
i already tried the compression fitting its leaking again booo im going to try the slip coupler this time
You can used the slip fix. Connector
Nice repair job! Any more hog issues? I noticed the leveled areas in the background didn’t seem any worse than before.
Yeah they came back and re-excavated different parts of my property 🙁
Pete B. Oh no! Do you have a place that will buy them locally? I know there is a place in Henderson that does. We trap them and load them on a trailer and take them to sell. Might be an idea if you have a small livestock trailer available or that you could rent.
@@floydfarms1578 Thanks
so sharkbite is installed just by pushing it in ?
Yes pushed in until it stops.
Thank you sir, my father isnt home, no water.
FYI ... Around Dallas this repair will "start" around $550.00 and up. Its worth doing yourself.
👍
Hey Pete, here in NY that would of been a new service back the the pitless adapter ...... Forgetaboutit
@@eastrockaway11518 I believe it.
Great video 👍
Thank you
I'm not impressed with the PVC fittings at big box stores. All I see is additional splices/adapters to go wrong in the future. If piping needs to be connected in a location where both ends are not moveable, I would like to see a flange union with a rugged seal. Perhaps an O-ring ?
Your are good I enjoy
Thank you
pipes must be cut flush to prevent leaks !
Good video, but there is more professional way of doing that:
1. Use PVC pipe cutter, de-burr from inside and outside;
2. Use PVC glue instead of compression since you have union;
3. Don’t use shark bite, it was unnecessary;
4. Use male nipple glued into PVC coupler and glue it to PVC side;
5. Use brass ball valve with female connections;
6. Connect union straight to ball valve and tighten it to copper.
Order: PVC pipe > coupling > PVC nipple > ball valve > union > copper pipe 😊
Very professional, but I'm diy guy not plumber.
All water main runs to house should have brass gate valve soldered in, no shark bite and no slip connector. I would have recreated a different repair instead of reproducing the original install that failed.
You could have just use a regular coupling. You already undid the union.
Where did you put all the dirt ??? 😆
You gave me CONFIDENCE that I can make this happen....we will see in a few short hours....to bad you are not available for consultation if I run into a snag.....
I rented a track hoe...I sure hope I didn't go into OVERKILL, where a SPADE SHOVEL , IS all that IS necessary .....250 RENTAL FEE ISNT CHEAP....
Great job, but SharkBites aren't recommended to be used underground. If you dug up the copper, you probably should've sweated that...
sharkbites need to be wrapped if used underground. he will be digging this up again. lol
Don’t put another shark bite fitting in the ground! They are NOT made for that
Also, shark bites def don’t work on PVC
something you just made up? you can use sharkbite underground but you must use their silicone self sealing wrap
He had sharkbites on there 4 many years it's OK ! everything wears out in time!
Why the hell did you put another shark bite fitting in?
Why didn't you just use a coupling and cement instead of compression coupling?
👋😊
Couplers don't work on a main water line , in time it will break
Coupler ratings on schedule 40 compression couplers are 150psi if you buy the right one. I had to do 2 just today to have a more permanent fix on my water main. It's all cast iron to a certain point and a fix over the summer I had done reinforced vinyl tubing at 2 different ends and with the weather changing I'm more worried about the vinyl tubing cracking and freezing. With the 2 couplings a schedule 40 pipe and elbow grease to get the coupling end over the cast-iron I was able to fix the waterman and holding so for about 2 hrs now. But for those of us who can't afford a plumber this fix is worth it to get water running back to the home
i would have sweated a 3/4 copper female adaptor on the pipe, then screw a 3/4 pvc male adaptor into that .Thats the way a plumber would have done it
A real professional would have soldered on a threaded adapter instead of using a shark bite and also used a PVC glue coupling instead of that compression junk. I get that this is just a DIY tutorial, but if you want a much longer lasting repair call a plumber to do it correctly the first time.
Diy guys like it easy both ways on and removals.
Better to use pvc union.
This was ment to brake the day it was installed, never use copper and steel
Compression couplings leak all the time never fail 1 o 2 years and you have to fix that again. You have room to glue a regular PVC coupling. And do the job right. From 1 to 10 I give you 5-
any homesteader should learn to solder so you dont have to use a sharkbite fitting. Copper and steel corrode over time. but im guessing the real issue was you drove over the pvc bushing with a truck or tractor? they are pretty fragile especially so near the surface. i just did this at my house except here in wi the lines are buried much deeper due to frost. I have no clue why but the previous owner thought that would be a good spot for the pressure tank (for people that use well water). Its going in my closet now conveniently next to water heater. On Copper union cover it in pipe dope also. Both faces, threads, and where the couple rides on the back of the one fitting. Make sure its Food grade pipe dope too.
The previous owner used galvanized threaded pipe reducer from the PVC to the brass sharkbite, which is a no no. The galvanized steel will cause electrolysis with brass or copper and will rust or corrode.
Not sure why you are using that pvc/ plastic valve. I’m replacing one now, junk. What happened to using metal gate valves . Last forever.
SharkPOSbite according to their own nomenclature?, Clearly spells out that the use of the product is for temporary fixes and patches ONLY Until a more suitable permanent repair can be made.
Oh & There’s absolutely no such thing as “pipe sealant”.
What seals the pipe is the picture of the “pipe thread” & Whatever pipe dope or Teflon tape that you use is simply designed to help you tighten the bejeebers out of it so that the thread does the sealing.
Well since my water heater broke and is leaking and I can't turn it off guess the house is gonna flood bye yal
This guy is not a professional. People use shark bite fittings because they can't sweat a copper joint. The comp' sleeve will leak in a short time. The pvc valve should be a CxC (copper x copper) brass gate valve. PVC is cheap.
1st of all get rid of those rotten tomatoes!!!!!!!!?
?
Hacker
A bad way to do a repair.
never fucking put sharbites coming from a real plumber thx
compression and fucking sharkbite on a main line lol dude worst job u can ever do
