Perched over the Pacific above rocks populated by lounging seals, the Cliff House in San Francisco is a landmark that has had many lives since it first opened in 1863. It burned down in 1907 and was even damaged by a dynamite laden schooner. The Cliff House was acquired by the National Park Service in 1977.
Things are not like they used to be....We can only look at these vintage photos and dream about them still being around. Wonderful photos of Old San Francisco.

The Victorian Cliff House was one gorgeous building. It was almost like a castle! Too bad that it had such a short lifespan of only a little over a decade. I wonder what it would be like if that building was still around -- and exactly how it caught on fire, something that no one really knows to this day. I just hope it wasn't arson! That building must have been an amazing place in its day. Too bad that now there is no one living who remembers it!
As a kid in the '50s, I thought excursions to the reconstituted Cliff House and its exhibits unutterably boring. I wonder about the burned-down-in-1907 version; what its grandeur inside was like. Are there no surviving historic photographs of the interior?
Back when people would do the craziest shit just cuz they felt like it. These days you cant take a shit without the gov taxing you or finding a way to fine you with rules and regulations. Cool video great compilatiom of images.
