This video is all about how to simplify an algebra fraction and forms part of the playlist 'Answers to tough questions.' It's generally an A / A* grade GCSE and would probably be around 3 marks.
The issue with all addition and subtraction of fractions is to make sure that the bottom number - the lowest common denominator is the same. The question is fairly straightforward to get the LCM and then you need to work through each term to ensure that they are equivalent fractions.
(3x)/(4)-(x+2)/(3)+(x+2)/(12) is a little difficult to write in the description but I hope you'll get the idea from the video on how to simplify an algebra fraction. There are a number of other videos and I'll add annotations to this so you can access them.
I hope the video helps and please do leave a comment - thanks!

Thanks helps me understand a bit now
sir is the reason why the +2 turns in to a minus 2 is because the negative in front of the -4 changes it?
+BanterComedy - Hi - yes you're 'gathering like terms' so +2 - 4 = -2. All best S :-)
I have a test tomorrow on algebra and this video is really useful only tip will be in future videos write a bit bigger because sometimes i was squinting but other than that really good
Glad to help and all best with your test :-)
I have a question how did u simplify the answer in min 3:31? I didn't get the all the final answer simplifying part can u explain it plz
Hi - with the top line I 'gathered the like terms.' So, 9x - 4x + x = 6x and -8 + 2 = -6. Best S

What happens if x is on the bottom of the fraction?
Excellent!
Hi Simon - thanks very much for your videos. I am currently preparing for some SHL tests. I have got the question to this point 150.81/148.59 = 151.05/ x. I know I need to get x on the top and I can cross these over to do it but my algebra is a little rusty. I was wondering if you could help me with this question or better yet point me in the direction of a video or worksheet that can help me with these type of problems. Thanks

Really helpful
At my school we learned to remove the denominator (in this case 12) and just use 9x-4x-8+x+2 and then simplify to get 6x-6 before putting x on its own or is this wrong?
Hi - thanks for the comment. You'd need to keep the 12 as these are fractions. Best S
Thank you 👍
excellent just what I was looking for, my GCSEs are next year and right now I'm preparing for the mocks, it super hard

Thank you !!
I’m a maths teacher and I will recommend your videos to my students
Here's a tip, tell them it's a channel but don't outright recommend it because they'll see it as something to avoid due to it being from a teacher who 'makes you do work'. They'll avoid it, or most of them will with the exception of a couple.
Mr polidan I suggest you should rather replace yourself with these videos.
Good - straight forward explanation. Thank you, I'll definitely share with my students.
Please dont leave the cursor on the pause button lmao
nicely done.. awesome
Glad to help and all best S
Id like to understand how you went from 6x/12 to 1/2x. I fine up to that point, i feel like i missed a step or dont fully understand the concept of fractions. The x was on top and now its part of the entire fraction. How does that happen?
Hi - Thanks for this.
The x is still part of the fraction but it's like saying (6 times x) all divided by 12.
The 6 and 12 are reduced so I've now got (1 times x) all divided by 2.
Hope that's OK and all best S
6/12 is the exact same as 1/2.
It does not matter if the x is on the top of the fraction or the bottom it means the same thing as long as you do not put an x on top and bottom at the same time (will cancel or divide out).
U are an excellent teacher u helped me in the homework a lot

How did your exams go
can the above illustration solved by cross multiplication method?
Satyaban Ukil - Hi .... not really, cross multiplication is only where there is an equals sign in the middle. Best S
@@3minutemaths Thnx for your prompt reply Sir. It will definitely help me. However I'm facing another problem. This time with factoring trinomial. 2x^2 + 15x + 28. But none of the factors of 28 add up to 15. How to solve it Sir. Shall be grateful if advised. Regards.
Satyaban Ukil
Hi - If the question says ‘3 significant figures’ or ‘2 decimal places’ you will need to use the quadratic formula.
If the question just says ‘factorise’ there is a particular method: Factorise Harder Quadratics th-cam.com/play/PLPglScc3TJ-Ov7F1_VRLUQ7Ecf5PrQ-T3.html.
Hope this helps, best S
Thanks
omg tysm i have midterms coming up and this helped so much!
sir i have a doubt. when you simplifed 6x/12 - 6/12 = you cant just turn 6x/12 into 1/2 x cuz sir the the variable was with 6 not with the whole fraction
Hi - around 4:07 there's a few options. (6x - 6) / 12 means you can separate both fractions as you are dividing 'each term' by 12 - so 6x/12, and 6/12 ...
These can then be further simplified to half x and a half.
Hope that helps and thank you for your comment. All very best S :-)
You did this problem easier than the other people on here.
That’s great, and glad to help - all very best S :-)
Tnkq sooooooooo much🙋🏼♀️
Thank you
i was wondering if there was another method to simplify 6x-12 ?
12
That is as simple as you can make it. You cannot simply subtract 12 from x.
It is like saying I have 5 apples so I took away 3 oranges. They are two completely different things.
Now if it was 6x-12x it would be a simple case of taking away one from the other because they are the exact same thing.
+Simon Deacon OMG you did my question!! that help so much!! that pesky " - " sign messed me up :P your the best!
+Add859 TankiOnline - That's great and glad to help :-)

excellent
Can you help me please, I have this IGCSE maths question in fraction form to simplify. Thanks in advance x÷3+7x÷9-7x÷18
Hi - you'd need to make all the denominators the same ... 18:
6x/18 +14x/18 +7x/18
Then add
27x/18
or you could write 1 and 9/18 x
or 1.5x
I hope that's OK and all best S
How did you get 9x-4x=6X?
Hi - it's 9x - 4x + x = 6x - all best S :-)
How do you get 4(×+2)=4×-8 coz it's not -4(×+2)?
Hi - sorry, but it is -4 from the negative between 9x/12 and 4(x+2)/12. All best S
Thx Thx THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO SO SO much

wow thank you so much. this really helped me. will never fail my tests and exams.
thank you so much. is this basically cross multiplying?
and what would you do if you have three different fractions that share no common multiple in the denominator
Hi - yes, it's pretty much cross multiplying to get the LCM. All GCSE questions should be solvable ....
Dont know
Yep
you are a great teacher

hi
Do you think I can get an A in 3 weeks. by practising papers day after day up until the exam
+Charlie Stone - Hi - it's possible, but depends on your starting point. A / A* students tend to be a little more confident with maths - it's good to practice though and all very best S:-)
let me tell you something. I was a grade D student in maths and I was in the lowest set. In my class, everyone was so bad at maths however with a little bit of revision i managed to get the highest grade for maths which was a C in the mock exam, i beat everyone! However i was still at foundation. The fact that I was the best in my class gave me immense confidence and motivated me to carry on. Since then, I deliberately started loving maths, then I found myself revising everyday! I couldnt stop. Despite still being at foundation level, i went on TH-cam and started learning all the A/A* topics. After a few months I was on top set for maths and now (after a year) i got 3 A*s in a row for all the mock exams. Right now, I'm one of the best in my class. Im not being big-headed but my point is that to get better at maths, the first step is *TO START LOVING MATHS*
I agree with you
are you in yr 11?
Yes, gonna do my GCSE calc exam next week
Wow - love this comment - fantastic work and all very best with your studies! :-)
it is nice
What happened to the x+2 in the second equation?
Hi - To add or subtract fractions you need the same bottom number (the denominator). I changed the denominator to 12, from 3, by multiplying by 4.
So, you need to also multiply the (x + 2) by 4. You'll then get 4x + 8
..... although you need to be careful that it's -4 (2.34 on the video).
Best S
Thanks so much I learned more here than in school
@@3minutemaths thank u so much
Algebra fractions are really really difficult. Even number based fractions are difficult. The reason for this is simple our brains find it difficult to deal with many parts which is what fractions are. Our brains deal with whole numbers more efficiently.
People with high IQ's find it easier to deal with many moving parts because they are mentally able to juggle more balls in the air and are able to watch the movements of each individual mental ball.
The beauty of mathematics is that it enables a normal IQ person to perform these tasks through lots of practice.
could anyone simplify this ?
(x^2/a^2) + ( ((x.tanθ)^2) /b^2 ) = 1
the aim is x on the left side of =
x = ???
this was used in game developtment for finding x coordinate given angle of mouse position
thank you in advance :)
what operation i need to solve this ?

And I thought this was impossible to understand
my teacher doesn’t teach us anything so all of us have to help ourselves WE HAD A WHOLE PAGE ON THIS STUFF AND I FAILED BC I DIDNT UNDERTSNAD
That really sucks.
Same I had this on an exam and didn’t remember ever learning about it
How did he get 4 at 1:55
Nvm
kinda everyone know this, make some videos teaching the tricky fractions like (1/x)/4 for example.
What????? How did you get the 4(x+2)?????
Hi - around 1:30? It’s to make the same denominator for all the fractions (x + 2)/3 becomes 4(x + 2)/12. All best S :-)
Surley if the whole fraction is - x+2/3 when you times by 4 wouldnt u times the whole thing by minus for. Why do you times thr x+2 by minus 4 but the three my posative 4.
If you could explain the value or function of X, then the sum would be a bit easier to follow.
+stunninglad1 - Hi ... I'm not really sure what you mean ... please could you elaborate?
Simon Deacon A bit unsure as to what X means in the equation We had 3x over 4 - How is that different to just 3 over 4?
+stunninglad1 - Hi, great question - I'll write a post on www.3minutemaths.co.uk and let you know when done. The idea of x is that it could be any number. When you just say '3/4' it really means 3/4 of 1 whole.
If you put an x in there it could mean 3/4 of 24 or 48 or any other number.
Algebra is used a lot when you need a general rule to convert a unit .. something like degrees to fahrenheit, or cm to inches.
I hope this helps and I'll get writing!
Simon Deacon Thank you for that. It's a very good lesson and it's good to see a teacher tackling algebra. I look forward to more on this subject.
I'm stuck on the -8...cant understand.. -4 +2= is -8????
-4(+2) = -8
What about bidmas
Hi - BIDMAS is definitely important ... but perhaps more with solving or calculating an answer. With this question we're really just looking to simplify. Best S
In my equation there's no x so I'm totally lost, I don't know how to add the numbers up
Hi - can you post the question? Will try to help.
In which country do you live? I am asking it becuase I learned that in 6th grade.

Simon Deacon can you tell me please that for which grade you are telling this solve. ☺
which country are you in? i learnt it in 3rd
AODestroyer12 I TF2 Gameplay you are suck
but why it -8? 4 x +2 is 8 and where is the negative for 8 come from
Last of Limited Hi - the -4 before the x + 2, means that you multiply each item by -4.
So -4 times x is -4x.
Also -4 times +2 is -8
Best S
why is it 6x and not 5x?
Hi - it’s 9x - 4x + x = 6x. Hope that’s OK and all best S :-)
