Lol fox’s “ budget “ line of fork suspension. I’m using Fox Vanilla Coil 32R 140 mm from 2009 ( open bath ) till this day and they are bulletproof! 16 years later and they are still going strong! Super plush beautiful handling and as tough as nails! Obviously I do regular maintenance as they are the best fork ever made!
I appreciate your video. I bought the new z1 and it’s sitting in the box. I assumed it was the same fork as the previous z1 but didn’t even realize it had a rail . I hated my z2. Will be returning it and getting a 36 on clearance. Thanks for saving me some disappointment.
shame that they downgraded the Z1 to the rail damper since the old one and the fox 36 rhythym, which I have, are oretty good forks and do really hold their own in rough stuff. I guess it is ok since it will be lower priced and possibly create a better experience for lower end bikes, but I think many buyers will be misled by the praise the older forks got online.
The smaller diameter piston and same damper as the Z2 in this new Marzocchi fork can be due to de fact that is E-Optimized. Same happens with E-Optimized Fox forks. For example E-Fox 36 will use normal Fox 34 inner components and have a thicker stanchion wall
Wrong, the head crown is thicker, explained in video. The Rythem air spring is a 2015-2017 36 air spring. I am guessing to prevent the upgrade. 2015 e bikes weren’t a thing
I was planning on getting this fork shock setup on my new Ebike and calling it a shred budget bike because I have great stuff in my other bikes just want to experiment and see how much of a draw back is this setup compared to my buttercups and deluxe ultimate setup
Push out the pin from the nylon seal head. You can swap the seal heads that way. That's how you can get the newer negative chamber spacer on the marzocchi air spring. I did it on my 38 to get it really, really plush. Also, that damper just sounds like a Fit4, that rail is probably just the same, but with the low speed compression adjust locked off.

I wonder if you can modify the damper to be a true open bath by drilling a couple holes? Like when they had Tenneco nitro cartridges when Marzocchi was with suntour 08-10
Welp guess this isn't the upgrade from my suntour xcr34 air that id hope Almost went with a 2024 lyrik select but was told marzocchi and fox have better small compliance Not sure what direction to go anymore
@@OtterMTBtech I bought a 2024 Roscoe 6 because I want to upgrade the components as I see fit. Plus I loved the matte Keswick green color over any of the Roscoe 6, 7, 8, and 9 colors haha I've already replaced the 9spd cues drivetrain with Shimano 12speed and replace the rear wheel with a high engagement hub/wheel (same as the Roscoe 9). I essentially have turned this into a Roscoe 8 of sorts Just need to replace the fork. I'm 280lbs kitted. I do trail moderate trail and I'm beginning to progress in skill and speed. I'm also beginning to do mild to moderate gaps and some mild jumps. And want to try mild to moderate downhill within my comfort and skill level. But I am progressing slowly but surely. The xcr 34 air's small bump compliance is leaving a lot to be desired. And when I lean and turn at speed I can hear the rotor scrape the brake pad indicating flex within the fork I ride in the Houston TX area but want to travel to Austin for spider mountain and other sorts.
Would be interesting if you checked out the 24/25 Bomber CR Coil. I've received two duds in a row now, and a lot of people on the internet are reporting the same. The problem appears to be some kind of spring/washer inside that snaps, leading to clunking in the shock under compression.
It is the issue of that design. Bomber cr is the copy pasted old fox van rc which had the same problem. You just replace it when it snaps (requires taking the ifp chamber off and then rebleeding it)
I ordered this fork from my local bike shop, not knowing they changed the damper. If I put a grip damper in it, would it be like the old z1? I can't return it.
Have you tried a fork with a Smashpot conversion? I found my fox 38 felt like crap (likely too much grease) so figured I'd try a coil swap. Would be interesting to see how you would review one.
I just have to edit the video, it’s nice name says it all it smashes, doesn’t jump great. Doesn’t require token air pressure setting, if you don’t setup a 38 right it’s bad. I have 38 setup video
So they replaced a really solid $700 fork with a somewhat better thousand-dollar fork...hmm I'm still bummed that they decided at some point to no longer make a lower travel version of the Z1 - I won a 2019 Z1 130mm and when they launched the Z2 they made the Z1 150mm and up IIRC

i love the z2 it performs incredibly well while riding enduro. sure its very basic and simple but theres beauty in that :)
Saved me from making a mistake while looking to upgrade my Fox 34. Thanks a ton for the video.

The old Z1 is a good fork, they mis lead me on this one.

I saw this and immediately bought a 22 Z1 on sale for $450 Cad since the super Z is just out of my price range.
Good choice
Great vid ! Thanks for diving in before everyone else. Who’s making a 38 coil e-optimized?

I tried, but I think you need the roll pin tool , like the luftkappe install. How did you get it out?
Damper is primitive, below fit 4
@@OtterMTBtech a vice and a similarly sized smooth pin lol
That does work, I swapped from the bottom, see if it works
@@OtterMTBtech damn you put a longer collar on the air shaft? Make a video!
I just used the bump stop and collar thing from ‘21. Had to use everything from Rythem.
Will post soon messed up shims stacks on damper
Amazing the z1 with rail damper review yes!!!
i still use Z1 from 1996 the top tube has a bolt clamp its not failed yet,
Is it possible to build the old and better GRIP damper into the new chassis?

The old Z1 or Fox 36 is a better fit for progression. FYI I run Cues, saves allot of money

Is your view of the new coil Z1 any different than air? Are they planning to make a coil super z?
If it says rail it’s not the best option
What a pity. Just a dope looking fork with internal for ants. Thx for clarifying
Truth
What midrange enduro fork would you recommend?
The old Z1 and Fox Rythem are decent and great for price

@OtterMTBtech thanks! I just ordered the grip damper that you linked.
Are You recommending getting '24 Z1 in order to get most out of Fox components? Also, how do You predict damper change would affect Coil version?
Get the old Z1 it’s better out of the box
Love your content....great video
hi I'm hesitating between the new and the old z1. I'm a hardtail, I want a 160 mm fork, what do you think?
The old one is better and cheaper
Bought this thinking it still had the Grip damper in it. Wondering if Grip is that much better than the Rail 2.0.?
I think it is worse, it has increased mid stroke, but feels terrible in the chunk. Working on a video now with it torn down
Sealed damper looks exactly like damper you'd find in a very bad DNM or Bolany type fork ...
It’s not that bad 😂
i have a 2025 z1, with the rail damper. can i put a grip 2 or grip x damper in it?
YA, drops right in. Working on videos now with it

I thought i'm the only one inserting the starnut crooked 😂
I used a cheap socket to bang it in, it expanded into the steer tube and got stuck. It was also probably crooked 😂
It works fine
They have star nut tools online for like $8 and they come with a spare nut
A proper star nut fitting tool only costs £10.
I am quite confused with Fox's and Marzocchi's lineup
What are you co fused about?

Kinda looks like it did, if you want performance like the previous Z1 or higher
