- Blue Steel is a Van Der Valk 48 Vitesse, which fell into probate after the death of her original owner and deteriorated due to over 8 years of neglect. In this introductory video I try to explain the change of direction we have taken since starting the expedition truck build, and introduce you to our future dream and the renovation we are undertaking.

What. Refreshing video. From a Paddy in Australia. ‘We buy things to plug the holes in our souls’. My gosh. ‘We trade hours of our lives for money’. I’m a nurse and struggling with my future in Aus trying to buy a boat.
Sounds a great idea - a home you can take anywhere. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
Good luck with your restoration, looking forward to following along!
How lovely to have you following along. We love what you're doing too, and wish we had your woodworking skills. 👍
What a difference the initial clearing and cleaning already makes. Unbelievable how messy and filthy that boat was before you got started.
Looking forward to follow the project! Best of luck!
Its amazing what a difference a good clean makes - thank you for watching
Love the way this has been edited, Great tunes. Hope the project goes well for you both.
Thank you 🙏🏻
You and your wife are legends, absolutely legends! That old man disgusting hoarder's shed turned out incredible nice. Congratulations for seeing the great potential of the boat, she surely deserves the love you are putting on it. I can't wait for what's coming next.
You got that thumbs up and a new subscription. All the best, skipper, cheers from Brazil!
Wow, thank you for the lovely words! Great to have you following along ❤️
Cool a new boat restoration project to watch . Best of luck and I enjoyed the video.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Have just discovered you guys on my ‘suggested’ videos. I just love watching boat rescues and rebuilds. Currently stuck into Ship Happens, Sailing Yaba and Ocean Melody. Really looking forward to your work and the highs (hopefully) and lows (god forbid) of the process. Promise to watch everything you do to the very end…….2 years…..3 years ? I got out of the uk too, ended up in France never one day of regret. Good luck to you both.
Thank you for following along. I daren't guess how long she'll take because I'm sure I'll be wrong in any estimation. What I do know is we're going to work on her as fast as possible while still enjoying the experience. France is a lovely place.
@@SavingBlueSteel I’ll do a quick binge watch of your other videos to kinda catch up with the past. Do you envisage a weekly, fortnightly or monthly update. Personally I really like the weekly updates on Ship Happens. But appreciate that requires a lot of time sat at a desk editing. Whatever you do, I’ll look forward to it…….all the grizzly details and inevitable weeks of sanding paint.
We’re going to endeavour to post weekly to fortnightly. Hopefully weekly if I can fit in editing between the boat and work. 👍
I escaped the UK 10 yrs ago and never looked back , knowing what i know now i should have done it sooner i am 63 yrs now .
I will follow you journey with great interest , good luck to you both 😎😎👍👍🇹🇭🇹🇭
Thank you - we look forward to escaping ourselves.
I'm going to follow you because I'm interested in seeing how this project turns out. Good luck!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thats a bit of a project!
No a fan of ear torture.
Good luck to you both.
Your comments on retirement is right on. There were a number of reasons for my own retirement but at 74 and not looking forward to another southern Canadian winter, I called it quites and now spend my time putting a 36 foot Roberts back in shape. Oh, and trying to do a certain amount of recovering me. Definitely past my "best before date. Best of luck with your project.
I know what you mean, getting up and down is not as easy as it once was. Good luck with the Bruce Roberts. 👍
I subscribed this should be fun watching with interest from New Zealand what a cool boat to fix up wish you and family all the best now Hurry up I want to see it float. Cheers.
I've got a good friend living in NZ - beautiful part of the world. Thanks for the subscription ❤👍
Good to see you back again!
Good luck with the rusty tub ;)
Thank you - wish us luck 😉
Good luck with the project mate. I've just decided to take early retirement. I am thinking about a project although it won't be a boat. I shall be watching this channel and urging you on.
I think there will be times when we will need some urging on 😉. Congratulations on the early retirement. Seen too many people who don't get to enjoy it.
Every time I'm down at the dock I always look through the gates and wonder what her story is. Good luck.
Silence is golden. Nothing would be better than this music. Sorry 🤗
Hi mate welcome back to your channel, Paulo from portugal, nice boat just needs some love....🙂
Good luck with your dream🙂 I've added you to my list, I want to see that jewelry coming back where belongs....float on ocean waves👍
Hi Paulo - we love Portugal. Thank you for following along
As a 70 year old (retired) owner of a 60 foot steel boat here in Oz, I'd be interested in watching this -BUT- The horrendous 'music' was painfully off-putting. I could turn down the volume but then had to turn it back up again to hear the words. Then the cacophony would begin again. Why not have some decent music?
Agreed, horrible music
Hi Susan. Sorry if you didn't like the music. I guess you can't please everyone - one man's (or woman's) meat is another man's poison, and I don't profess to be the greatest video creator. I will take on board your critique though and see how the next video turns out. In the meanwhile I am a bit jealous of you owning a 60 ft steel boat in Oz, a great place to be on the ocean.
@@SavingBlueSteelcan’t think anybody would like that noise, it was like watching a gen Z tiktok lol.
Totally agree cut the music
Love the boat , good luck
Use subtitles... 🤔 but let him get going. 🧙🏻♂️
I sold this boat on our brokerage many years ago, in the same place ashore! I know the boat well. If I see you onboard I will pop over and say hi.
It'll be fantasic to finally see some progress to it, it's been sat there for far too long now. Good luck, she will be spectacular finished. Louis
Yes indeed, she is looking very sad and neglected but we are slowly starting to make progress. I look forward to you popping by.
Am 43 now and for the last year i have been contemplating and looking into doing basically the same thing as you guys getting a liveaboard boat to restore and then retire lol
Do it, life is too short to not chase your dreams.
Subbed, looking forward to this. I’m all for boat projects but this is, well, this is… AMAZING! Don’t get me wrong, it’s probably not the most wise idea, but as long as it’s not gonna destroy your entire life, who cares, it’s a challenge but not impossible, difficult yes, but certainly possible. Good luck, and I’m here for it! ♥️
Thank you - the greater the challenge the greater the reward 😉. Thanks for watching.
Ok got me hooked. I got to see how this ends up. I just prematurely retired too. Had enough of this going to work rubbish. You will find its the best decision you made in a long time, followed by maybe a bad decision. Let's see, good luck with it.
Good luck with your retirement - work is definitely a trap. Fingers crossed it turns out to be a good decision. We’re pretty encouraged so far🤞
Could you please elaborate more about type, shipyard build, build year, engines, length, history and so about this ship?
Hi. Good idea. We’ll definitely include this in the next video 👍
Just subscribed looking forward to next video 😊
Thank you
Wooah ik got myself a boat to last year with some work and i like it a lot (also with some rust), but this kind of rust would give me anxiety attacks 😄 but in the end: nothing man cannot do. Good luck to you and enjoy the fun 💪🏼
Thank you, we're definitely enjoying the journey so far. Thanks for following 👍
I'm excited to see your renovation! I am working on a similar project at my channel, a 75ft motor sailer steel hull!
Very cool! I'd love a 75ft motor sailer.
Enjoyed that pleased I have found you and a motor yacht as nearly all have sails lol 😊terrible music but that’s been said other than that very enjoyable 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Stunning job of the bathrooms, how long is the boat? Looking forward to following as we have a Dutch steel cruiser and are looking at getting a ValkKruiser
Thank you. She''s 48.5 feet long, a little longer if you include the davits.
best of luck to you and the missus
Thank you 🙏🏻
She’s a lovely shape boat, I can see why you bought her. Mind you, I don’t know about the condition 😂
Yes, we agree. There’re plenty of bits in poor shape, but there’s also a lot of good steel left. Wish us luck 🤞
@@SavingBlueSteel I certainly will wish you both luck. 😂👍👍👍👍
Cool project! I subbed!
Thank you ❤
I'm looking forward to following your boat rescue adventure. A couple of video tips, avoid using nightclub type music and check if your editing software can normalise video audio levels to the same level so people using headphones don't get sore ears. TH-cam has royalty free music available to use. 👍
In the Audio Library in TH-cam Studio, you can find royalty-free production music and sound effects to use in your videos.
Thank you for the tips, and thank you for following along 🙏🏻
Bro, you are speaking truth!
Awesome job cleaning this mess. If you want to refurbish that yellowed out toilet seat... just place the parts it in a see through container with a lid (for this size, i suggest you get one of these countainers that is supposed to store clothes under you bed ). Submerge them in a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide (12% is enough) and put the container at a sunny place (if there is no sun this time of year, put it in a cardboard box which insides are covered with kitchen grade aluminium foil and palce a "halogen !!!" lamp inside that box. After 1-2 days, that seat looks like a new one.
Thanks for that tip. We may give that a try.
Well I am in, just what I need another two crazy Poms fixing a bucket of a boat. Ship happens is the other channel. Hi from Oz.
We love that our Aussie Cousins are following along. We spent a few happy years out there. Crazy is an understatement 😁
Good video, always interesting to watch the process of buying a do it upper. Thoughts, change the music, explain more about how you are cleaning her up, not just before and after. Also give us more info on the boat and your plan for doing her up, we need a hook to keep us watching
We will indeed. We were quite surprised by how popular this video was so hope we can improve for future episodes. Thanks for following 👍
You are absolutely Crazy !!!!!.... And I Absolutely Love it !!!!....🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good luck, and I'll be watching !!!...
I think crazy is about right 😀, thanks for following along.
Well it looks better already well done, what would I suggest, get on some arc and mig welding courses and all will work out
Not a bad idea
Interesting project. I'm going follow your progress. Please ditch the K-pop music.
What a lovely boat, good luck, keep us posted!
Thank you 🙏🏻 - we’ll definitely keep you posted with updates
Like the video but not the music
I’d like it, but the music is too loud and distracting. Please do away with the music.
Yep, the worst music on Earth and way too loud
shes in tuff shape bro
She is indeed
I don’t think the music is that bad. 🤷🏻♂️ I’m along for the ride. 😊👍🏻
That’s some project you’ve taken on there. Sailing Melody did similar, but the weather will slow you down. I hope you are a decent welder. Good job on cleaning that head. Get rid of that really annoying music!
Yes - we’ve watched some of the Sailing Melody videos. Great plan and family project. I do admire people that do unconventional things, especially as a family. The weather is sure to slow us down which is why we’re currently working on making her water tight and warm aboard. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Cool looking boat. Are you still building the bush plane and flying the paramotor?
+@gerrycollins9409 Yes, still flying the Paramotor though haven’t done much vlogging with it this year. Sadly we sold the bush plane, it was one of the first casualties in our plans to downscale. Very sad to see it go, but realistically I can’t plan try to retire early and own a plane and airfield (also gone)
Your wife looks like she is really enjoying herself.
It pays to keep her busy 😉
Nice boat , i am looking for a big boat like that myself , look forward to seeing more , ps might try some better music with the video , or just none
Ok! Wow I subscribe. I want to see you make Swiss cheese float. 👍 You go pal.
We’ll do our best to make Swiss cheese float 🤣
Rat rat jumps ship 😅
No music would be so much better. We are here for the content. I have Spotify for the music. Sorry, but that is my thought on this
That wasn't music......
She was a nice boat
Yes, she was stunning. Such a shame she has deteriorated so
You’re mad taking that on.
You're probably right!
@@SavingBlueSteel do you see sailing melody.
@@Jonathanbaker Yes - we are a follower of their videos.
@@SavingBlueSteel did you see me on there last year.
@@Jonathanbaker Not that I recall - send me the episode and I'll look
When you Showed the aft port corner of your steel hall yacht I saw the name vandervolk on it And that makes it all the reason there to restore that boat that is a very premium brand of yacht any of you reach out to van der volta might give you some help or give you some original blueprint to work from
We have some plans that came with the boat which may come in useful. Yes, the pedigree of the boat is one of the reasons we felt she was worth saving. We can tell she was built to a high spec. 👍
They call it conspiracy so it can be more easily dismissed. Live your life any which way you like 👍🏻 all the best 🙏
Fellow steel boat restorer here 🙌🥰 are we crazy or what?! 😂 where is she based? We in Preston.looking forward to seeing your progress.
Crazy indeed - we’re in Pembrokeshire
Was ist den mit dem Boot passiert. 10 Jahre IN der Nord auf dem Grund? Bin gespannt aud die Viedeos. Ich besitzer eines bj 68 er Stahlverdränger freue mich solche herrausforderungen zu sehen.
A lot of steel has to come off, plasma time. The question is, is there any good steel left under the paint? The nice thing is that steel cuts out very quickly and is similar to plywood boats, rotten spots, just cut them out and replace. You will have to remove the boats interior wood paneling so that no fires start when plasma or torching out all the rusted plates. I will be noting your channel and will keep tabs, you may have to remove the engine or engines, speaking of the engines have you checked them to see if they are good or rebuild able: best of luck⚓️
Pot luck with the engines - but they’re low hours with logs so fingers crossed they’re good when we get to that stage 🤞
Great Project !! 🙂👍 .. I looked at her in Milford Haven a couple of years ago .. maybe more ? .. I’m more a sail boat kind of guy but I’ve restored small ships 🙂 my proudest achievement was in 1974 .. I spent 18 months living aboard and restoring Lillian 2 .. she’s a 96ft 1918 twin screw diesel motor yacht .. plenty on google if you search 👍 Anyway .. my advice to you is buy some old scaffolding stairs .. and build a really usable staircase up into the back deck of the boat … I’ll pop by if I may when I’m next down in Pembrokeshire .. I’ve got a house in Solva and I often pop over to Milford.. I’m a big fan of Sampson boat video blog .. Leo is an ex musician and his music is spot on .. !! Also I sold the old steel barge to Chris on restoring Rusty barge Video Blog I’ll send you a link .. he’s loving his project .. both blogs are worth watching for inspiration 😀👍 All the best .. Frank
Definitely say hello if you see us there. I’m more of a sailing boat guy myself but Rachelle prefers motor cruisers as she likes space. We have ruminated on buying a large spacious steel sailing vessel that needs some renovation if we’re still motivated after finishing this one. That way I get sail and she gets space, but for now we’re loving this project.
Indeed - we’ve been searching for scaffolding as we
Intend to cover from the gunwales down with heavy duty tarpaulin and have side access stairs - great minds. Thanks for all the tips, they’re very welcome 🙏🏻
I should be down for the winter in a few weeks .. 🤞
I was looking forward to seeing your video . But The music is killing me and I don't feel like reading the cc.
Most of that decay should T-Cut out mate 😂 Looking forwards to the transformation! Good luck and all the best ☺️
Haha indeed - nothing beats a good T-cut 😆
Oh good God! What have you done??!
Like. They say. You. Own. A boat. Break out. Another thousand. Dollars
Very true
gog luck with the project, it will keep you busy.
Of that we have no doubt 😄. Thanks for watching 👍
I will never understand how there’s people who let their Valk Vitesse get in this condition.
Me neither - it's a real shame. 😢
Well you have certainly found something to spend your retirement funds on. I hope it all goes well and you know how to repair steel boats. The real problem is rust never sleeps. Did you have it surveyed before spending your money? Good luck and I will follow your progress. Ian
Hi Ian - no survey prior to purchase, but we did inspect her. We bought her for her scrap value so reasoned that if she wasn't salvageable we could recoup our money that way. Now we've spent more time inspecting her we feel she is worth saving. Indeed rust doesn't sleep, which is why we intend to remove any trace of it rather than cover it up. I'm hoping to get some sage advice from followers too as we progress. I'm not a complete stranger to steel, but I wouldn't claim any expertise. We will be getting her professionally surveyed though closer to completion. Wish us luck
Glad i found your channel. I want to follow your progress. Please stop the music. I will follow in silence if i have to do so. Otherwise, nice work.
I love the music, great video ❤
Thank you 🙏🏻
You’re a hard working man but please please cut the music noise down and turn voice up 🙏 please
Stunning, the work that you've both have done so far. Keep up the good work. I just found your channel and can't believe how the shower and water closet look. I hope that's the right word. In the states we call that the bathroom.
Thank you, Rachelle can take all the credit for the cleaning. We call it the bathroom too in a house, or the heads on a boat.
😱😱😱
There are other manufacturers.. but a few hundred pounds spent now will be a great saving in the long run ! 🙂👍
what a monumental task you have chozed, i have faith you can do it. yes we work hard all our life gathering tools and possessions, and in the end you Kack off and the next guy gets all your stuff. hmmmmm wtf is the point, i'm 67 and got 1 more job to do, is restore a 72 gmc truck then liquidate everything, and drive my truck into the sunset ya
You're absolutely right, and that sounds like an awesome project. Good luck 👍
Retired at 57, best job I’ve never had! Good on you mate, you go get those plans.
Thanks 👍
Free advice from an old TV producer: take down the music. Music in the moving images business has always been there to enhance the experience. Not overwhelm the viewer. Originally, when music was first added to sound films producers worried that the audience would wonder where the orchestra was. But the audience accepted it as a sort of compliment to the image. Just my opinion. Otherwise, good career advice. I'll add: when I was 23 years old and staring my first career job, a retiring co-worker told me, "Beware of security, it will kill you." At 72, I can tell you, he was spot on. Life is a balance.
Hi. We've had quite a few comments regarding the music, but thought I'd respond to yours as I do value your experience in TV production and thank you for your insight. While I am taking your advice seriously, I also note that the TH-cam analytics shows me that the segments containing the music have the least drop off, and that more viewers drop off the channel in areas where there's no music and more talking. It's early days yet, and we'll definitely experiment with the production format while watching the analytics and also taking on board the comments of others.
Indeed security does kill you - it's fantastic advice. Thanks for your comments, and thanks for watching.
@@SavingBlueSteel I certainly did not mean remove the music by saying "take down." But rather lower the volume. I agree with you and TH-cam that too much talking is, well, too much talking. I think many people, including myself, watch TH-cam videos for information as much as they do for entertainment. Probably more. Otherwise, the editing was good. Keep up the good work, and good luck with that boat. I suggest you watch "MY FIRST BOAT', too. That person lives in Berlin and although he now owns six "FIRST" boats, the big ones are steel.
👍
Pretty hip hop music for a old fella. Could you tone it down.
At least its steel and you just need an angle grinder and welding machine to fix it. Are you good at welding? Doesn't matter, you will be when you done.
I’ve done a bit of welding, but am not an expert. I do look forward to improving though. I’m definitely more of a steel man than wood. I’m too ham fisted for wood 😊
Cut the music!
Going forward SBS. can you turn the music level down please now I u derstand it's not to everyone's taste but please a bit quieter. I might even sub if you do 😊
No music please - Good luck 😊
Oh, a little word of advice... dont waist your time repairing small sections...👍
I question wether this is a serious project or a fake one to cash in on TH-cam
Music too loud....
say more things about the boat , like what year it is who it built by ? a bit of history of it , and a word of advice make sure to tell that beautiful sexy lady there what wonderful job she is doing ,
Don't be giving her a big head - I'll never hear the last of it 😉
Ditch the the music please.
Escape the rat race…… join the rust race…😂😂 steel boats… serious upkeep….
Haha - it is a rust race indeed. Yes they are, but if done properly can give many years of service.
Жене надо медаль дать за подвиг.
She does indeed 😀
Yep that music has done me in unfortunately, cant watch this.Bye bye.
I'm 71 years old and would love to follow you restoration BUT the music is too loud and a bit irritating so bye bye.
Dear SBS guy.
😱 Good grief! Why this way too loud and therefore annoying and distracting "music"? I would love to watch the restoration/repair of this steel yacht. Please turn the volume down and use it as a background music (if any). I'm looking for a "channel substitute" because Sailing Melody unfortunately switched from restoring a steel yacht to a fibreglass sailing boat.
Best regards, luck, health and wisdom.
Well done on a fantastic job of the bathroom you have both done ! Can I be rude and ask how much was the Boat ?
Get new music please
Looks like way too much work, just scrap it.
Couldn't watch his to the end, even though this type of project appeals to me. The music ( not really music is it, more just loud noise ) added nothing to this video. Its not about the 'choice' of music, its just intruding on the purpose of the video. Get rid of the music or your channel will fail...its that simple.
No more background music please. Not needed as it's all about the content.
Loose the music…….
THUMBS DOWN, when the music hurts one's ears once you're done low volume talking. NOT IMPRESSED!
Slap a load of fibreglass on the outside, fill it up with sea water and come back in a couple of years and brush the remaining rust out, youll have nice grp cruiser!😂
😆
