I still remember (1989) being in gym class & walking up to this kid who played. The only stuff he had ever listened to were bands like Quiet Riot, Ratt, Motley Crue, Metallica etc,. I handed him my portable CD player headphones and then got this cheshire cat grin on my face & said listen to this! It was unbelievable watching his facial expression! After about 30 seconds his mind was blown! He looked at me and said what is this?! Mountain Song by Janes Addiction. Ah the good old days!
Great story man! During that same year ('89), I was a freshman in high school and I gave a copy of Nothing's Shocking to a guy in one of my classes who also listened to many of those same hair metal bands. The next day I asked him what he thought and he said, "It sounds like stuff that murderers would listen too." I don't know if he ever listened to them again, but I definitely took that response as a compliment - LOL.
I was at this show. No surprise for me because I had been following Perry since his previous band Psi Com. And I love how Angelo from Fishbone is up on stage too. In fact, that's how I found out about Jane's Addiction was from Norwood of Fishbone. I had seen Fishbone open up for Camper Van Beethoven at Madame Wong's (I think) in 1984 before Fishbone had released anything. I had no idea who Fishbone was. Hell, nobody did! But I'll never forget about 3 of the guys (probably Chris, Angelo, and ... Walt) came on stage doing head over heels cartwheels which just showed how much energy I was in for. Yeah, they BLEW ME AWAY! I ended getting to know them and then I ended up driving those guys around town to shows for about 4-5 months because none of them owned a car at the time, and I did. I even drove all of them all the way from where they rehearsed at The Fishbowl (Norwood and Fish's big green apartment building off La Cienga Blvd I think) all the way to UC Irvine where a friend of mine was a DJ at the time, DJ'ing as Carlos Marx (Tony Ozuna). It was a crack up as Fishbone took over the building and show. My friend briefly interviewed them but all they wanted to do was play music, and they did! I discovered Funkadelic Maggot Brain that night :-) Anyway, fast forward to what ... 1986, I had known about Psi Com breaking up when I saw Norwood at a show and he tells me Perrys got a new band together and I should check them out. So, I went to the very first Jane's show ever. Looking at google maps just now I think it was the building on the NW corner of Hollywood Blvd and Las Palmas. I just remember the show was located in a building that looked like the one currently at Hollywood n Las Palmas. The show was on the 2nd story above what was at that time a shoe store. And now appears to be a market (me editing this in 2020). Walking up to pay the door girl was topless. Very cool start :-) Anyway, I remember the place was FULL of helium filled balloons across the ceiling and was a damn good show. So much so that I have easily seen Jane's Addiction more than any other band in my life. As for this Mountain Song show, I wish I could see myself in this video. There is only one possible time I might be in this because I was standing on a small table against the back wall where it is very dark. I think at one point I saw my silhouette but ??? I just remember it so absolutely jam packed I saw the table and climbed on top. I'm a tall dude too but it was stifling down below. And those 2 chicks @ 02:06 ... it was like everything froze when they walked in. I remember me and my friend Dave just slack jawed when we saw them ... like WHO ARE THOSE GIRLS?!? They were part of Perry's entourage and they would be at just about every show from then on. Never met them though ... not sure why. I do hope it doesn't sound like I'm bragging or anything. It's just the memories I have as THOSE were the days to roughly quote Classic Girl. Then years later at the 2nd Coachella ever in ... 1999, 2000? Perry was playing so I found the tent he was in an went up to him and asked "Perry, how's it going? Do you remember me?" He looked at me and said "Uh ... your smile looks familiar". I was somewhat shocked as I used to talk to him all-the-time. But then again I had heard and read that he was going to Bali A LOT doing all sorts of drugs so ... who knows. Then again, I was just a hanger on always talking to the musicians but never participating in the music itself so ... maybe that's it. Whatever, he remembered my smile ... I'll take it :-) Thing is, I bet if I saw any of the guys from Fishbone they would all remember me. Especially Angelo or Norwood. Those guys were very cool and cracked me up! Yes ... memories.
Saw Fishbone at Lollapalooza '93 in Atlanta. On the grass behind the seating people were throwing wadded-up cups (the old red waxy Coke cups) and the whole area had a big red blurry look from all the cups that were flying back and forth. During Alice In Chains' set, for "Rooster" they had guest backup vocals by Maynard James Keenan from Tool, and dUg Pinnick from King's X!
I used to go see Fishbone all the time when they would play in OC. The singer’s girlfriend worked in the Mission Viejo mall, where I worked so I talked to him once then and sometimes I would talk with his girlfriend. She was beautiful and had great style. I remember I told her I liked her hair and she pulled off a wig.
im 44 now and i can remember this like yesterday. 1st lollapalooza concert Orlando Fl Janes takes the stage , fan starts climbing the speaker scaffolding, crowds starts chearing him on staff and security yelling at him to get down janes kicks into this song but only the beginning bass riff for about 7-10 minutes while the crowd is going crazy fan is climbing higher and higher cops and fire dept start to go up after him while band is still playing intro bass solo , crowd at this point is going histerical my blotter acid is in full swing dude starts to fall from scaffolding as fire dept grabs him perry Farrell kicks into COMING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN. I was about 19 yo when I discovered JA, thanks to MTV, the only channel that could show me the world outside my little sleepy Italian village from which I wanted to escape and never return. And I did, getting on a flight to London, where I had the most amazing opportunity to see Perry & Co in a rather small and very sweaty venue in Portobello and managed to be dragged backstage with my friend Debbie, to discover that David Gahan from Depeche Mode was also there with them. I have beautiful photos of that gig. And I loved/ love these guys to the moon and back. And that experience is still so incredibly alive in my memory. One of the most amazing.

a lot of people say Nirvana put an end to hair metal...for me as soon as I heard this track, I never wanted to listen to Bon Jovi or Skid Row again. It sounded fresh and powerful...still does in 2016.
Yeah, bands like Jane's Addiction, Faith No More, RHCP and Living Colour made glam metal irrelevant well before Nirvana even made Nevermind. To me, they were the final piece to the puzzle but not THE puzzle itself.
Hardcore was pretty powerful too at the time. Much more raw and literally "hardcore" than glam bullshit. Glam was never hardcore as hardcore punk was so hardcore that it paved way for grunge and alot of metal.
This, and Nothing’s Shocking put so many bands that started the Alternative/Grunge movement on the map. INCLUDING Lollapalooza. Jane’s deserves to be in the Hall of Fame!!
At 42, I definitely would love to relieve me of the 80s. But then I ask you: How is this possible listening, sounds like that classic Jane's? Surely, if I reach 80 I ll say that this time I listened, danced, freaked my head and enjoyed my 17 years of age. Long live the good old rock 'n roll!
This reminds me of driving around Detroit with my buddy in his Mustang GT drinking Mickys and smoking a left hander listening to this tape over and over. This was the shit back in 88.
Saw this band when they were opening for love and rockets... They played their set and I was blown away... Met the band later that night in a hotel elevator.... We hung out with the band and met love and rockets,also... A memorable night
The “So Alive” tour was my first concert ever….unfortunately they had The Godfather’s open for them…although I did get to see these guys a few times… For some weird unknown reason Portland Oregon likes to throw shoes onto the stage during shows during Jane’s Addiction concert they did that didn’t bother Perry until someone threw a Birkenstock Perry decided to stop the song picked it up walked back over to the microphone and said “Birkenstock what the fuck you don’t know the first thing about fashion” and then continue this song
Did you happen to be at the show in St. Pete? (FL) Now I'm really wondering how much they actually like the elevators. It seemed to me when we were in the hotel that every time the door opened one of them was in the elevator. Eventually we all just ended up laughing every time the door opened. What an amazing time back in the day. It was really cool 25 years later to be able to see them again and let my kids meet them as well. Those were some wild times back then with many stories. It was great to read your story!!! You take care!!!

I'm so grateful for Jane's Addiction. They have many great tracks, but this is in the top 5, for sure. I feel like I know quite a bit about rock music and so I can honestly say I don't think there's another band like them. Matchless. (I'm not saying that because so much of social media uses "Best. Band. Everrrrrr!" these days.) They're abstract, sexy, aggressive, whimsical at times, psychedelic - and put together in a way where I'm left wondering, "I don't know how they put all these things together and pulled it off, but it's sooooo great."
In the 90's this was the new spiritual music that brought people together in a positive way. Most 90's shows were amazing. No worries about idiots with emotional issues that wield guns and cry about there phones taken away
The music, the surrealism… while seemingly chaotic, has profound meaning and depth. It’s a manifestation of Perry’s grief and trauma. As you can see in the video everyone is tripping on drugs and going out of their minds. Perry’s physical, violent convulsions are amalgamated with a kind of spiritual ascension that expresses a divine, poetic sound that resonates with so many people. Coming down the mountain is a reference to coming down from being high on heroin, and how difficult that is. In an interview, Perry said that “everybody has their own opinion” and “cash in now, honey” is a tribute to his late mother, who committed suicide when he was a child. Each of us has his or her own opinion if life is worth living or not, and she decided to cash in. It’s so profoundly sad. Perry has sacrificed his pain for the benefit of our own redemption. I’ve never done heroin, or any other hard drugs, but when I listen to this song, Perry takes me with him on that ride and it transcends all the stuff that I’m dealing with… it’s so empowering.
Mark Allen - Did Jane play the full set at this show? I remember driving into LA to watch them about this time and they left after a couple songs. Perry was "not feeling well" and cursing the audience...
Saw Tender Fury open for Porno for Pyros at the Gary Tovar Benefit at the Palladium (Summer '92 I think) and they unfortunately got boo'ed off the stage. Didn't know a TSOL member was in that band.
Just listening to Jane’s is exhilarating so I can’t imagine what it must have been like to be at their live shows...we need a band with this attitude again!
Back in the day when snowboarders weren't allowed to ride the lifts in resorts we had to hike many mountains to ride. I had this song on repeat in my head as I hiked my ass up the mountains of Tahoe to rip it up in the backcountry. Then suddenly 1990 and it all changed.
Nothing new that I've come across anymore sounds even as close to a amazing as this album still does to this day. I hope these boys realize the fantastic contribution they made towards music.

This song and video got me hooked on the aggression and greatness of this band. XXX, nothing shocking and ritual are the best first 3 albums From an artist since Zeppelin 1 ,2and 3. Still my all time favorite band
I like my Perry trippy and 80s :) This show captures the club scene from 88 perfectly. Anthrax were kings, punk and thrash were ushering in a new wave of rhythm driven metal you could "mosh" too, and metallica were opening for ozzy on their first tour of big halls. For 10 bucks we could skip out of school early head to the Living room in Providence and see 3 or 4 bands a nite. Old school.
the strand... was that the place w/ the strip joint attached? I remember walking in with my wife one nite before a show we thought it was just a bar! Surprise! haha
Been to the Strand many a time and never saw any strip joint attached. The Strand was a large theatre. Good size venue. Downtown Providence was my stomping ground in the late 80's/early 90's for live metal, hardcore, and post-punk stuff. Lived in between Boston and Providence. Boston's scene blew compared to Providence's.
I was pretty sure it was the strand it was an old roller skating rink, in the area you are talking about. Just looked like a bar next door not a strip club. Either way I agree we never bothered with Boston too much hassle for not enough of what we wanted.
I saw them at the World in NYC in 1988. I loved their album. Seeing them live was like a religious experience. When Dave Navarro and Perry Ferrell started to make out during this song, I knew I would love them forever... One of my top two favorite concerts.

I bet you had to hold that discman real steady... ya know,.. so it wouldn't skip! lol
John Galt was it four or eight times oversampling....😋😋😋in that discman
Great story man! During that same year ('89), I was a freshman in high school and I gave a copy of Nothing's Shocking to a guy in one of my classes who also listened to many of those same hair metal bands. The next day I asked him what he thought and he said, "It sounds like stuff that murderers would listen too." I don't know if he ever listened to them again, but I definitely took that response as a compliment - LOL.
Do you always larp on TH-cam?
John Galt Ratt is pretty fuckin breezy
I'll take it :-)
Thing is, I bet if I saw any of the guys from Fishbone they would all remember me. Especially Angelo or Norwood. Those guys were very cool and cracked me up! Yes ... memories.
great story thanks for sharing
Amazing story; thank you so much for sharing!!! EPIC!!
Cool story ❤️😀
I used to go see Fishbone all the time when they would play in OC. The singer’s girlfriend worked in the Mission Viejo mall, where I worked so I talked to him once then and sometimes I would talk with his girlfriend. She was beautiful and had great style. I remember I told her I liked her hair and she pulled off a wig.
A truly original band. These guys started a whole scene.
im 44 now and i can remember this like yesterday. Most freaking awesome concert experience of my life .
bigmanracing300 Ktm top 5 albums of all time for sure!!!!!!
I was there for that also

I was there. He sang with Ice-T too...
Awesome I agree--saw Lolla that year in Illinois
Still one of my favorite, life-changing songs...opened up whole new doors in music.

In 2022 still a mile stone of free expression and a example of musicianship ..Perry and Navarro and that beautiful drum and bass.. absolutely destroyer 🖤
55 yrs old and still love this.
Lol never thought would still be blown away by awsome music of that time at 59 ,pretty f 'in cool
Perry Farrell was an animal. That hair is awesome, and the vocal solo at the end is sick.
Nicholas Stines :That weird guitar part in 'Ted..Just Admit it' is also pretty insane and intense. You know the part I'm talking about.

One of the most amazing.
so dope. Dave Gahan surprise bonus!
You never went back? I love Italy
Jane's Addiction is one of the most underrated ever...did you see
Perry is the only guy that can make bike shorts and fishnets look cool.
Slot of ppl sound crappy live this guy owns it lol
Joe Perry from Aerosmith?

Cool to do! 🙂
a lot of people say Nirvana put an end to hair metal...for me as soon as I heard this track, I never wanted to listen to Bon Jovi or Skid Row again. It sounded fresh and powerful...still does in 2016.
Yeah, bands like Jane's Addiction, Faith No More, RHCP and Living Colour made glam metal irrelevant well before Nirvana even made Nevermind. To me, they were the final piece to the puzzle but not THE puzzle itself.
exactly!
Well said.
Nirvana was overrated and had maybe a few good songs.

These guys rocked my world almost 30 years ago, and they still do. Now I just ache more afterwards.
good lord to go back in time to see some Jane's club shows would be absolutely amazing.
Worth the ache.
This reminds me of driving around Detroit with my buddy in his Mustang GT drinking Mickys and smoking a left hander listening to this tape over and over. This was the shit back in 88.
It should be mandatory that every upcoming teenager listen to this song and watch the video.
Nothing's Shocking is one of the best '80s/'90s modern rock albums ever made!
Wow. I'm jealous. I saw Peter Murphy at a small venue back in the day. Great show.
Dream tour my god
I just bought a ticket to see Love and Rockets open for Janes Addiction in San Diego in August.....
Still jams after all these years. That is what great music is all about.
Skateboarding to this song in the 80's.....
+Johnny Mireles I rocked to it too. I was driving a car, but hope you had the same luck as me!!

"Nothings Shocking" is the perfect title for this album! the energy just never stops. great song, video & Band.
Well said!
In the 90's this was the new spiritual music that brought people together in a positive way. Most 90's shows were amazing. No worries about idiots with emotional issues that wield guns and cry about there phones taken away
Talking about emotional idiots, the fight did not give Perry a good look
Nailed it. Beat the machine through self denial, love, sacrifice to a higher purpose. The Way.
Enough avalanche for Mons Olympus. 🎉
KISS
The band I was playing guitar in at the time (Ex-VoTo) opened this show...Also on the bill was Jack Grisham (TSOL) and his new band Tender Fury
I remember ExVoto playing at the Krypt.
This song shreds from beginning to end! Love it.
This is the first song and video of Jane's Addiction i ever heard and saw and iv'e been a fan ever since.
AMERICAN MUSIC..
Was such a proud thing fr 1987-97
Blasted this during some really great moments in my life, the era of music then was incredible. Navarro's solo......
Just listening to Jane’s is exhilarating so I can’t imagine what it must have been like to be at their live shows...we need a band with this attitude again!
It was absolutely awesome! Best shows and times ever
Digo!
Back in the day when snowboarders weren't allowed to ride the lifts in resorts we had to hike many mountains to ride. I had this song on repeat in my head as I hiked my ass up the mountains of Tahoe to rip it up in the backcountry. Then suddenly 1990 and it all changed.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who constantly thinks of snowboarding while rocking this song, haha!
The most underrated band there will ever be
Nothing new that I've come across anymore sounds even as close to a amazing as this album still does to this day. I hope these boys realize the fantastic contribution they made towards music.
I'm in hospice care and I think this song rocks.
Praying for you my friend ❤
Rock and roll. Ding it out.......❤🎉😮
Marc Ecko’s Getting Up In my heart forever
this band, and this album made me who I am, and I listen to it start to finish a lot, nothing out there today even compares damn it!
January 8, 2020... Dave Navarro and John Frusciante played this song together on a stage in Beverly Hills, L.A. 🙌
doesnt seem so long ago that I was 20 years old at a Janes Addiction concert in LA hearing them for the first time. Doesn't seem like it was 33years ago. Seems like 15 years at most. Has that much time gone by so fast?

'Nothing's Shocking' is one of the most solid and unique rock albums ever.
Marty! We need to go back!!!
My first boyfriend was 11 years older than me - I was 18, he was 29. There were a lot of things wrong with that relationship, but one thing I'll always love him for was his introducing me to Jane's Addiction. They changed my life.
Going to see them Saturday here in Cleveland! The land of Champions!!!! .....and The Donald!!!
Fuck the Donald, but love everything else!
+Primus Sucks I agree! I was just being a bit sarcastic.
fuck killery and fuck all of you forever
That's what Jane says :p
I was a fan the first time that I heard this. They never got the real recognition they deserved. "Nothing's Shocking" could be my #1 "Deserted Island" album.
I've had it since it dropped....still my favoUrite. ❤
Game changer this can never be duplicated again thank god for Janes Addiction!
Such a brilliant sonic assault to the senses, complete aural delight, one of the greatest albums in the history of rock and roll. So damn electrifying and phenonemal!
Proof that Eric Avery is one UNDERRATED bassist!
*Watch Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song" shot live at The Scream in 1988. The song originally was released on the album Nothing's Shocking. The song was named one of the best hard rock songs of all time by VH1.*
Jane’s in their prime , killed them all! My all time favorite band!!!!!!
I got to see them in Atlanta! I used to go to all those concerts in the 80's&90's!!!
Marty! We need to go back!!!
I was at this gig, if my memory serves me correctly, the RHCP's opened for them. I'm at the beginning of the song in the front row. Awesome show and very strange club.
Those bass lines were always fucking great. I practised this riff when I was playing in the 90s. Respect to Eric!!
dropping acid, listening to Jane's...watching the popcorn ceiling rotate by the candlelight. The 80's were pretty intense.
I did the same! Always listened to Jane's on the way up.
Try" Mr. Bungle " on acid. Trippy.
100% acid song
blinking Christmas lights and my comforter in the same color as the lights!
Soundgarden hit just the same on acid.
How can anyone not like this? It's a Fellini film on acid to the best rock band of the late 80s!
One of two tracks that always blew the lid off the venue whenever the DJ played them back in the day. Perfect.
That dance move at 33 seconds is the coolest thing I've ever seen I think
This album is over 30 years old. I feel old. Jane's Addiction uber alles.
saw that on canal plus TV in france, 88... bought the tape, one of my fav record ever. huge influence on everyone, period :) thanks guys! i was playing guitar already and Dave's playing was amazing to hear
I've seen this video a million times and just now noticed the Fishbone cameo. Anyway...there was always something ceremonial about Janes 1.0...it was like a religious awakening seeing them live.
God damn--The shivers i get from the memories from Janes addiction.
Good ones :)
SHIVERS ... very intense ones
Heroin withdrawals
Two lifetimes ago. I still feel 22 inside. Shrug.
This song and video got me hooked on the aggression and greatness of this band. XXX, nothing shocking and ritual are the best first 3 albums From an artist since Zeppelin 1 ,2and 3. Still my all time favorite band
First song I ever heard from Jane's Addiction. Saw them live at some dive in 87 or 88. Fell in love with Eric Avery. Most melodic bassist ever.
Do remember which club it was? What city?
@@kevindemattia It was at The Roxy in Hollywood, July of 87.
Don't tell my mom, ok? I was supposed to be in Vacaville.
T Wozniak did Perry’s voice peak back in the 87 show you’d sad or was it not fully developed when you saw him just curious
2024. Smashes as hard as ever. I listened to this track on repeat 36 hours Idaho to our nation's capital. What a drive.
I went to Spit/Axis in Boston back in 88' to see them live when Nothing Shocking came out. What a night, what a show, what an experience.
Damn wish I could have, I was 22 in 88. Cheers!
Can't put it into words how amazing this song is
Timeless, could have come out last week
I remember when they played in Tampa in the 80’s I was hooked.... so amazing live!!!
I've been listening to this song for damn near 35 years, and I'm only now seeing the video for it. Funny how that happens.
Those 9 track tapes man
I like my Perry trippy and 80s :)
This show captures the club scene from 88 perfectly. Old school.
+Gene A or Lupo's, or The Strand, or Babyhead
the strand... was that the place w/ the strip joint attached?
Hell yeah the living room just look for the huge grasshopper you know you close!
I discovered this song on VH1 when they were doing a countdown of the top 100 greatest hard rock songs back in 2008.
Powerful riff, pristine recording, Dave looks so young, but so did I at the time.
Still beautiful after all this time. Thank you boys.
I saw them at the World in NYC in 1988. I loved their album. Seeing them live was like a religious experience. When Dave Navarro and Perry Ferrell started to make out during this song, I knew I would love them forever... One of my top two favorite concerts.
TWO THOUSAND AND TWENTY ONE.........OH MY GOD.........
TEMAZO.!!!!!!!!!Jane's Addiction Manda Realmente Despues De Todo.!!!!!!!!
These guys were an 80's band. Glam rock was at its peak, but these guys showed there was still hope. Music still holds, too.
