Jane’s was my first concert. Had to make the trek from southern Idaho to Salt Lake City, and my high school basketball coach punished me for missing the one practice by not letting me start at the next game. It was still the best choice I ever made in that stage of life. The concert was beyond amazing, including being introduced to Primus for the opener, and despite the supposed “hurt I was doing to the team” with his chosen discipline I scored a season high and we won that next game. I made sure to tell the coach it was due to the abundance of inspiration I gained from my experience. He never brought it up again, and I played Jane’s Addiction in the locker room for the rest of the season.
Nice dude, you freaking RULE!! I was a basketball player too, in my blood stream but I had an experience kind of like yours. I was also the lead in many high school plays. But one day there were auditions for a play and the director had chosen me to play a certain character even before auditions. But I needed to go to a concert. So she told me, just show up, you don't even have to audition. I chose the concert and wasn't cast in the play. Rock and Roll over school, YES!!
Good story dude. Thanks for sharing. I was a young golfer competing with Michelson and nationally ranked. Then my girlfriend turned me on to Jerry G. and then the band was always the dead following me. In college Jane's Addiction was one of my favorites. Nah, they get their recognition.. it's just band hasn't done anything worth mentioning in decades. Been long hiatus, lineup changes, and no groundbreaking music since 90s.
I’ve listened to thousands of records in my 55 yrs. I would rank Nothings Shocking in my top 10. That particular record is a masterpiece. I never see that record or the band ranked in any of the “greatest” lists. I have to agree that they don’t get the recognition they deserve. Legendary groups are judged on what they did in their time when they were relevant, not on what they’ve done recently. They were an incredible live band and influenced a generation of people that “got it” whether they made any greatest lists or not.
They were the first "alternative rock" band to really make it big and Lollapalooza was a huge game changer before Nirvana Nevermind. Later, I think they got overshadowed by Nirvana. I love Nirvana but I was a bigger Jane's fan in 1991 and 1992 when Nirvana really took off.
@ict113090 I'm with you on that one bud. SP was great but Jane's was fuckin phenomenal. Perry is a great showman. It's like he was the circus ring leader. The only thing that sucked was that Dave Navarro wasn't playing with them.
The Scream Club, especially the location by MacArthur Park in downtown LA, was an amazing space. The band and that club and the patrons all complimented each other well. Such fun.

In 1989 I first heard Ted Just Admit It, and it changed music for me forever. I started playing bass 4 years before and I had never heard anything like it. I still play, and still to this day Eric is my favorite bassist. Nothing’s Shocking and Ritual..? Try to imagine any of those songs without him driving with those amazing bass lines. All that shit was all him. Such an incredibly underrated and unappreciated musician. Anyone remember the Deconstruction album Eric and Dave made after he left the band?
Avery was the foundation.. The riffs he brought forward laid the foundation for the rest of the group to build on.. Hence, everything post Avery never delivered in the same way.. Yes! Deconstruction, what a great album.. Never got it's due.. Still have LA Song & others in regular rotation...
Deconstruction is an immensely beautiful record. Just as good as Jane's classics. Polar Bear is great also. I have all of those albums in my collection. I have liked basically everything any member did after Jane's up to around 2001. After that it gets mixed, some good tunes. The new Jane's song does sound nice.
Nobody sounds like Janes they are absolutely original and March to the beat of their own drum. Thank you for a great time every time I listen so unique and hits home emotionally
These guys were something else. I was always inspired by Dave Navarro as a guitar player. When he went on to do his project with Eric Avery (Deconstruction) and his solo work, he was still putting out material that I enjoyed!
I say Navarro's llaying on it is peak top tier. Just brilliant trsck after track of course on the back of Avery of course. They were do meant to do that album.

Why does no one ever mention Gift, the docudrama Perry and Casey made together? It was a dark journey into their drug addiction. I never hear anyone speak of it. I'm sure I'm not the only one that remembers it?
Like many kids in my generation - X - I spent my teenage & young adult life going to see shows. And over all that time, I never witnessed a more eclectic & diverse crowd than I saw at my first Jane’s Addiction show in the fall of 89. From mullet wearing metal heads to mohawked punks… from blacked out goths to rainbowed hippies… from skaters & surfers to nerds & geeks… new wavers, preps, gays, stoners & jocks… Slayer patches on jean jackets & Deadhead logo tie dyes to Public Enemy, Smiths & Black Flag tees. It was truly an amalgamation of every facet of that moment’s underground together in one place & time, to witness a bad ass band everyone could agree on. Years later, I still can’t think of any other band or artist that was or is capable of that. It was truly both a beautiful thing to witness & cool as hell to be a part of. And that’ll always be what I think of when someone says their name or plays their music.
I live in L.A. and from the first time I saw Jane's I tried to see them as often as possible. I had a feeling that one day, being able to say you'd seen them a bunch of times would be on par with saying you saw The Velvet Underground or Led Zeppelin. They were always fantastic live.
Towards the end that was their first break up, Jane's Addiction had concerts lined up for their first tour of Australia. The would break up before coming to Australia but told everyone to hang on to their tickets with Jane's Addiction coming to Australia maybe about 2 months later & honoured their commitment which I absolutely loved them for. Also it made me believe that they realised they were just too good to split up, it kept me hoping, but alas... The Melbourne concert went right off with everyone hoping this wouldn't be the last we would see of them especially as a short time later Jane's Addiction would release a compilation album of rare tracks.
I was in junior high when Nothings Shocking came out. To this day that record gives me chills. It is so unique and ahead of its time. It never ceases to amaze me. Incredible live 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I saw Jane’s Addiction in a small club in Boston shortly after their first album was released. I was there to see the opening band and luckily we stayed to check them out. They were so good I got the cd the very next day. Awesome. You won’t find an experience like that today. That’s sad but Jane was great.
Was my 8 year old (at the tine) son's first concert. He loved it. He's now 9 and has a couple more concerts under his belt, but Jane's Addiction still put on his favorite show.
This was such an excellent profile. A thorough and engaging rock and roll biography. Actually gave me more respect for Jane’s & great memories of their early material.
I discovered them when I was in ninth grade! Sometime between the fall of 1988 or the spring of 89 I acquired a Nothing Shocking cassette tape that came with my monthly subscription of Thrasher magazine . I grabbed my skate and headed over to my buddies house where I knew a few friends were hanging out. We popped the tape in, and just like that fans were born! 🤘
Thanks for doing a well researched current Jane’s Addiction story. I always enjoy catching your material and all of the Howard Stern references, as I am a lifelong listener as well. James has been my favorite since early 90s. Exciting that they’re riding with Eric, but now, Dave is going to be the missing factor. Always something.
Anytime I go snowboarding Nothing Shocking is in rotation on the drive up, right alongside Electriclarryland. Just the right sounds to really get you pumped for a day of riding. Been like this since the early 90's and no matter what else is on the list, those two albums remain.
This was really well done. I’ve been a massive fan of their music since the early 90s, but I’ve never known much about the band itself, other than the obvious drug overtones. I saw this movie called “The Gift” back in the late 90s that they did that I believe is sort of hard to come across nowadays. It was about the band and Perry Farrell losing his gf to a drug overdose and there are these great live clips of the band that are super intense…I’ve looked for it a few times and, to this day, have never been able to find it for purchase. Anyways, I believe Janes Addiction’s influence has been massively underrated over the years…I still absolutely love the intensity of that first live album!
I saw Jane’s Addiction on Lollapolooza in 1991. Saw Porno for Pyros in 1993. Both great! It was the end of Jane’s and a new beginning for Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins in Porno for Pyros!
"Just Because" is in my top 5 EVER best written songs. And your link to my favorite band, The Cult, you have now induced me to subscribe. Thanks for great story telling. More, please.
Excellent video my man. I was fortunate enough to see them in 1990 in Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom with the Rollins Band opening. What a night! Great memories of a very influential band. Let's hope the new material is awesome so they can close the book with a bang. We appreciate your work.
Ah you lucky mo' fo'! So jealousy, what combo! Introduced by a way older person & they blew my little mind. Their songs still move me to an altered state....1st time I saw them I was convinced I was effected by 2nd hand smoke (nerd that I was), NOPE it was the music, way better & less side effects than the actual smoke would ever be. ....I probably would've been "high" for days if I'd gone to that show! 😂
I knew Perry’s family as we lived in the same condo building back in 90’s. I knew one of his sister’s for over a year before I found out they were related (different last names). We would go out to dance clubs with a group of friends and one day I went to her house and happen to catch albums records on the wall. I asked why her parents have JA albums on the wall. She nonchalantly says it’s her brother’s band. His family was surprised one day when we were all at the condo pool and I was listening to his CD. I guess they never met anyone that was a fan. Keep in mind this was around 1993. I saw his family album and met his other sister, father and mother. I believe one of the parents was a step. His sister could care less about his music and was into top 40 pop. He came to vist a few times and I would always missed a chance to meet him. It would have been cool to say hi.
Jane's was a breath of fresh air compared to the shitty glam rock bands of the time. Jane's and the Pixies helped lay the groundwork for the grunge bands of the 90's.
Janes has been one of my favorite bands since high school in the 90's. There's something absolutely perfect there. A truly alternative rock band. I think it wouldve boiled down to them and Nirvana as kings if theyd continued into the 90's
I remember 12 years old on dirt bike track riding, all the sudden bikes are going the wrong way on the track, almost hit head on with Avery. Those guys were a blast, looking back they were all high as a kite, happy and lucky something bad didn't happen that day, thx for memories Jane's addiction
Excellent story of a major force in keeping it fresh. Sad that they ended but their intensity made it a difficult trip for all of them. Still, they werecoriginal and important in the history of truly independent bands & artists. Their work is still fresh. Got to listen again. -Dan G.
Thanks for this one! They were the greatest, I think. They came at the time when music was feeling really hollow, and plasticky. Not many bands can boast of not releasing a single shitty album in the eighties. Let alone even making a remarkable album on that decade. Nothings Shocking may actually be the one album in the 80's that really mattered.
I can still remember having good-natured arguments about Jane Says that "Yes,that is steel drums in the background!". So many moments of my life with songs from the first two albums as the soundtrack.
I remember seeing them at this small Greek theatre in LA called John Anson Ford. What a show! Saw them over 10 times and that was special. Loads of drugs and I was a deadhead too.
Stephen Perkins is my favorite drummer and the best drummer of my entire generation. ‘Ted, Just Admit It’ has the greatest drum intro ever recorded. Maybe the best intro of any instrument, period.
This was a fantastic overview that I couldn’t stop watching. Jane’s turned me on to so many other great bands and styles of music as an impressionable teenager that led through a lifetime of enjoying music on the “outside” but a curse in that I typically abhor popular music now😅
@@adamblackman6660I think they still had a couple great albums after that, and still have good stand alone tracks up through their most recent stuff, but I can understand your perspective.. There was a time when I was absolutely sick of them to the point of being annoyed by their music, mainly bc they were just inescapable especially in the late 90s-late aughts..
I'll never forget my drummer friend bringing Nothing's Shocking cassette to high school. I am still listening to it today. Up the Beach still a heavy, killer opener.
Good to see a video on this great group. Thank you! Casey's last name is pronounced like "Nickel eye". I've been freiends with ger for about 15 years now. She also named the band - sort of. She and Perry were sitting on a couch trying to name the band and Jane walked by. Casey's jokingly said "Jane's Heroin Experience", a play of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It was a throwaway joke by her but Perry got quiet, stared for about ten seconds and twisted it into "Jane's Addiction". The lyrics of the song "Obvious" were written by Perry about Eric. Casey said she wasn't even sure Eric know that and he played on the song.
Saw Jane's Addiction at small club called the Underground in 1988. They were touring for Nothing Shocking. They put on quite a show and they definitely weren't famous yet.
I have seen a few vids with this voice. Nice to see the face in front of the voice. Very cool approach to aspects to entertaining situations. Keep it rolling, history of music is pretty incredible.
40 min 😮 Heck yeah 😃👍 Love this longer format, i know you did some longer vids here and there like the Metallica one and i absolutely am for it! Cool to put a face to the voice also! Feels more familiar!

I’m glad you give good focus to Eric. He is often an unsung hero but no doubt is the true backbone for Jane’s.

Eric Avery IS Jane's Addiction.

I live in L.A. and from the first time I saw Jane's I tried to see them as often as possible. I had a feeling that one day, being able to say you'd seen them a bunch of times would be on par with saying you saw The Velvet Underground or Led Zeppelin. They were always fantastic live.
I have great memories of my old friends and I listening to janes and RHCP while getting high. Back in the early 90s music was everything to me.
So far, this is the best most comprehensive history of the band I've seen. Thank you Rock N' Roll True Stories!!! My love for Jane's is beyond!!!
I've been asking for Jane's Addiction for ages! Happy!! Thanks man!!
I saw Jane’s Addiction in a small club in Boston shortly after their first album was released. I was there to see the opening band and luckily we stayed to check them out. They were so good I got the cd the very next day. Awesome. You won’t find an experience like that today. That’s sad but Jane was great.
One of my most FAVORITE BANDS HANDS DOWN 🙌🙌🙌💃💃💞💞💯💯. This band has its own original sound like no other!!! 🎵 🎶
This band has a special place in my heart, thanks for putting this vid together, so much detail and what a story
Love this deep dive!! Ritual is one of the best albums of the 90s! Pure Masterpiece!! PLAY LOUD!!
I remember Gift. It was such bad acting but so real. Based on real events.
@bulrich610 cut the guy some slack music snob. We don't need that !
I used to sing that first song when it would rain and we'd get off work for it. Doing construction. Hardest job ever.
Someone on the comments has it, above.
One of the most pleasant voices and good rhythm of storytelling for music documentaries. Good job
I saw Jane’s Addiction on Lollapolooza in 1991. Saw Porno for Pyros in 1993. Both great! It was the end of Jane’s and a new beginning for Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins in Porno for Pyros!
Omg sooooo much support and love for this band here!!!! How awesome!!!
I was into Rap, & Hip Hop when I first heard Jane’s Addiction, & fell in love with the music instantly!! Man I miss the 90’s….
Me too....
"Just Because" is in my top 5 EVER best written songs. And your link to my favorite band, The Cult, you have now induced me to subscribe. Thanks for great story telling. More, please.
Love the long form history like this
Excellent video my man. I was fortunate enough to see them in 1990 in Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom with the Rollins Band opening. What a night! Great memories of a very influential band. Let's hope the new material is awesome so they can close the book with a bang. We appreciate your work.
GREAT video! LOVE JANE'S ADDICTION!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘☮
Thanks!
Drugs and ego, unfortunately… remember seeing them live in San Francisco with Pixies and Primus triple band concert. Great concert! 👏
I saw that show too!!
Damn, that's a show . Saw them in 91 at lollapalooza
I just got to see them for the first time last week and it was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
Saw them 2 days ago 🎉 BADASS
This is a terrific entertaining and informative video! Well done! 🤘🎸🤘
This was great Thank you so much! I've been a fan since I was a teenager. Their music has moved me through many parts of my life.
Fantastic episode.
Thanks appreciate it
I knew Perry’s family as we lived in the same condo building back in 90’s.
Thanks for yet another fantastic episode.
Jane's was a breath of fresh air compared to the shitty glam rock bands of the time. Jane's and the Pixies helped lay the groundwork for the grunge bands of the 90's.
yes indeedy
Exactly, including Nirvana.
Yep
What ever happened to the VHS video "The Gift" that they made in the early 90's? I had that video and was such a wild and visual ride !
When I was 18 I bought Ritual De Lo Habitual on cassette wore that sucker out! Classic album, great band definitely pioneers of alternative.👍
Janes has been one of my favorite bands since high school in the 90's. There's something absolutely perfect there. A truly alternative rock band. I think it wouldve boiled down to them and Nirvana as kings if theyd continued into the 90's
She made it to Spain...Truly an epic ending! Great video. Always loved Jane's but Perry sounds like a maniac!
Literally! his behavior seems like he is bipolar.
Janes addiction was the soundtrack of my young 20's. I listened to nothing's shocking every day for probably 5 years. Thanks for the great video.
Great stuff. Three days is an amazing track
I remember 12 years old on dirt bike track riding, all the sudden bikes are going the wrong way on the track, almost hit head on with Avery. Those guys were a blast, looking back they were all high as a kite, happy and lucky something bad didn't happen that day, thx for memories Jane's addiction
*Summertime Rolls* is the most romantic song ever!
Me too although only saw Jane once. The Dead a little more then once😂
High school in the early 90s was awsome, saw them in 91 at the first lollapalooza and im on you tube coming out of the pit trippin on acid
Stephen Perkins is my favorite drummer and the best drummer of my entire generation. ‘Ted, Just Admit It’ has the greatest drum intro ever recorded. Maybe the best intro of any instrument, period.
Stephen Perkins never ceases to amaze me as a drummer. He is the greatest drummer of my coming of age.
Wow, what a great video! Thanks man 🤘🏼😎
Dude… it’s 2024 and nothing has changed. 👊🏽
Excellent video. I love this band and love that you paid so much detail in explaining Jane's history.
Glad you enjoyed it. These videos are a labor of love doing all the research and reading on the band. plenty more coming!
@@rnrtruestories ♥
Its so nice to look back and realize that way back then...my taste was IMPECABLE!
I read the Jane's Addiction book "Whores". One of the best band biographies I've ever read. Highly recommended.
“ What can you say when you’re a whore”
I agree
Scar tissue by Anthony Kedis is a good one and so is Aerosmiths!
Oh and Rick James Memoirs of a Superfreak!
Mark Lanegan's 'Sing backwards and weep' auto bio.
This was a fantastic overview that I couldn’t stop watching. Jane’s turned me on to so many other great bands and styles of music as an impressionable teenager that led through a lifetime of enjoying music on the “outside” but a curse in that I typically abhor popular music now😅
HERE WE GOOO!!!!
Awesome video man, thanks for this one!!
One of the biggest bands of my youth. Even the Red Hot Chili Peppers seemed like squares compared to Jane's Addiction.
Listened to them too. "Fell in to, A sea of grass, And disappeared among the shady blades". Think I don't anymore because I love God.
I'm not sure I'd go that far, but Jane's is pretty awesome. I'll forever live the Peppers though!❤😊
The Chili’s seemed to degrade after Blood Suger Sex Magic. It’s just pop to me now. James remained eternally primal.
The Chilli Peppers suck dogs balls especially the lead singer
@@adamblackman6660I think they still had a couple great albums after that, and still have good stand alone tracks up through their most recent stuff, but I can understand your perspective.. There was a time when I was absolutely sick of them to the point of being annoyed by their music, mainly bc they were just inescapable especially in the late 90s-late aughts..
I'll never forget my drummer friend bringing Nothing's Shocking cassette to high school. I am still listening to it today. Up the Beach still a heavy, killer opener.
One of the more underrated rock bands of all time
Thanks for proving that word is meaningless
I am in New England for the next few months working i will see janes and love n rockets in boston soon, so excited!
Great video !! Listen to the whole thing eating a box of honey nut cheerios. Incredible band that deserves to be in the rock and roll hall of fame.
You ate the whole box? I used to smash an entire box of fruity pebbles in one sitting.
Lmfao this is my favorite story in the comments so far 😂
Navarros guitar playing on Shocking was spectacular. One of my favorite records. I loved Ritual too but Nothings Shocking was the balls
Saw Jane's Addiction at small club called the Underground in 1988. They were touring for Nothing Shocking. They put on quite a show and they definitely weren't famous yet.
Came here to see after Perry went after Navarro tonight- sad history for such a great band
THE MOST UNDERRATED BAND IN ROCK HISTORY. AND ONE OF THE BEST....EVER🤘🏽⚡️
*Eric Avery writes thw Best Bass Lines Ever.*
*J.A. gas Best Guitars. Amazing Vocals. Best Vibe.*
Dude, showing your face is awesome! Props to that! You’re a great curator!
There was a not too distant time when you could look tough just by carrying a book by Hesse or Hemmingway. Times have changed.
I knew "Been Caught Stealing" but it was "Ted, Just Admit It" that made me adore this band. I'd never heard anything like it before.
