    Good fix. I converted a Craftsman with primer to auto choke. Had a spare, but bad engine in the hoard. You will need all the parts from the donor motor. Muffler and bolts, thermostat assembly, rod, carb, spring, etc. Man is it sweet now. Just turn the key, three blades and it fires up. Not bad for a curb find. Only have $65.00 in it, and $40.00 of that was a new battery and charger.

    • @briansjersey1
      @briansjersey1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hanksgarage_ the thermostat works perfectly. The arm moves forward as it warms up and goes back when it cools down. Whatever controls the linkage rod and tugs on the throttle keeps going up & down. I can hold it in a good position and it runs smooth, but as soon as I take my finger off of it, the surging starts right up. I read somewhere else to test for a vac leak with some carb cleaner, since it has a new carb and with gasket and o ring it may be the manifold gasket?

    I have one of these that won't start even after I changed the oil (more about that in a sec), replaced the spark plug and air filter. I'll do this next. Thanks for the video.
    Also in changing the oil I put a whole quart in (I thought it would stop me when it was full but it never did). Now that all the excess oil has leaked out what should I worry about?

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you need to make sure the proper amount of oil is in the mower, and may need to take out the plug and clear all the oil out if it got past the rings. Should only take 20 oz of oil or so. When a mower wont start it is almost always the carburetor needs to be cleaned out.

    Good info in the video. However, I have a question. Inside the cavity that the bowl bolt screws into, there are 2 small holes. What does each do? On my carb (sim to yours) I can only run a wire through the one with brass bushing. The other hole just "bottoms out". Doesn't seem to have an "exit" inside the carb body. I can't understand why the carb would have a 2nd hole, but not do anything. I've tried to spray carb cleaner through that hole, but it (cleaner) doesn't go anywhere. Just backs up cleaner tube until I release pressure and then shoots cleaner back out of same hole. The one with brass bushing exits into throttle body of carb. Any ideas on what 2nd hole function is? After rebuild, I put the carb back on engine and everything "seems" to work okay.....although I do get a little "engine pulsing" until engine warms up, but other than that, it seems to work okay. Just curious?? Thanks much.......

    I hate those autochoke carbs. For my good customers, I charge them less to convert it with knockoff primer based carb and put an OEM primer back plate on it. I get $70 for the work and parts cost around $35 and it takes me all of 15 minutes to do it. Then I rebuild the carb and sell with a core charge it to my I saw the TH-cam video and now I'm a mechanic people. Lather, rinse, repeat. I'm also able to sell the springs and linkages separately to those that actually need them.

      I can't access a computer at the moment, I use for craftsman Sears replacement parts site to find the part numbers, they have exploded parts diagrams. Key your mowers model number into the search bar and it should take you to it, you will have to go to the carb diagram to find the part number for the rebuild kit. Key that into Amazon or eBay and there you go. You can also use that part number at your local mower shop to buy it locally. Generally the carb kits are universal so they will include more parts than you actually need.

    It is probably the carb and the float

    Is the needle seat replaceable?

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is, but you need a screw or special hook type tool to remove it.

      Thank you. I purchased a EZwalk mower and cleaned the carb but the float will not lay flat when you turn the carb upside down because the seat is swollen. Im trying to find the part # for the seat but having a hard time.

      They are just a standard briggs seat, they also come in every briggs rebuild kit. Your local mower shop should have them separately as well.

      I thought the "seat" was part of the carb where the needle rests. The rubber tip can swell and stick to the seat.

    If old gas was problem with carb, why not drain fuel tank and put fresh gas in.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the gas in the tank was fresh, the carb was clogged from the old gas that the owner had already drained. But yes, I do drain the old gas out when it needs to be, not a big deal.

    I have a mower that's stuck at full throttle

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually that's a linkage issue. Check the governor linkage and butterfly valve if anything is not loose or stuck that's most of the time the issue. You could also be missing a return spring depending on what model engine you have
