I love that you chose to tell a story with so many interesting facts! We absolutely need a part 2! 💗 My (very small) childhood Barbie collection actually has a few of the ones you showed - Bathtime Fun Kelly, the blonde Sweetheart Barbie, & Tropical Splash Barbie.
Aw thank you! I think at this point I know basically everything you’d ever want to know about Barbie 😂 Did you keep them in the boxes, or did you actually play with them? The Bathtime Kelly doll looks like one I would have had fun with, I loved anything that involved water 😅
The way people criticise Barbie for being “too sexual” because she has big boobs really bothers me. Like criticise the fact she was based off that other doll, fine, but big boobs don’t make a person, or Barbie, more sexual. That’s a harmful mentality that leads to actual women who have bigger boobs being harassed more and held to much higher dress code standards compared to other women. It’s not like it’s a choice, and if it was I don’t think anyone would want the back pain lol. Your mum’s collection is amazing, thanks for sharing it with us and for not avoiding the more difficult conversations that Barbie can bring up!!!
Totally agree - I “developed early” (I’ve been 5’7” since I was 11 lol) and was always held to a higher standard than other kids my age. So I’ve sort of seen both sides - I had big boobs for a 5th grader, but they’ve stayed about the same size 😂 Aw thank you! 💜💜

This was so interesting!! 🩷 I was an only child growing up so my mum spoilt me with dolls, and playing with Barbies were everything to me! As I became a bit older I became more into Bratz dolls but they’re not around much anymore. So seeing Barbie dolls still being produced out there today is amazing! So nostalgic!

I'm a lifetime Barbie collector and I really like your video. It was a great summary of Barbie's history. Your mom and aunt have an awesome collection of dolls ❤ I think adults thought way more about Barbie's body and bodies in general than kids ever did. As a kid I always wanted to be as stylish and successful as Barbie, but I never thought "I want to be skinny like Barbie" I did end up being skinny, but I wasn't really aware of it until adults started talking about my body. I also don't like the claim that Barbie only became diverse recently, and before that all dolls were "blonde and blue-eyed" There were always different Barbies around, if you wanted them. Both mine and my mom's first Barbies were black, while we're white. I also always loved Barbie's friends like Teresa, Christie, Kira, Lea etc. I like that they had a name and identity of their own. And I think they're all very beautiful, just like Barbie 😘
HOLY CRAP She has Tracy and Todd dolls in the box. I have never seen that in my life like I never knew anyone that had it in mind you I know a lot of the collectors like holy crap. Yo, your mom is awesome. I want my son to think that I’m the awesome mom to but He thinks I’m . crazy toy hoarder and maniac craft maker .

In my opinion the "controversial dolls" are not controversial at all. Pregnant Midge is a great way for kids to learn about pregnancy, especially if they have a pregnant mom/younger siblings. Growing up Skipper is a great doll for girls going through puberty, giving them the message "you are not alone, don't feel embarrassed, Skipper's going through it too" 😊 Fun fact: there was a My Scene doll line with the same feature in the 2000s.
I kept every single Barbie, My scene Doll+ any other doll including my baby dolls. I have the small dolls in a wooden Barbie box, with their dogs, horses, Mermaid babies and a suitcase full of Barbie clothes and shoes. I even have a Cindy doll, and Lots of Barbie's from the 70's and 80's. I always thought I was so odd for wanting to hold onto my dolls, clothes and accessories until the Barbie movie, when I seen the millions of other people who collect, store, restore, Dolls and Barbie's. Makes my heart warm ❤ I never owned one single Ken, I never even thought about his existence. I had my Barbie married to a bungee jumping Action man. 😂
Loved your video! My mother would have loved it--she collected Barbies--she had about 300 as well, but not as extensive as your mom's collection. My daughter had the Pooh Stacy and the bicyclin' Stacy. Thank you for the nostalgia and fun facts. (Your cat is adorable!!!) :)
I absolutely LOVE the early dolls of the late 50’s-early 60’s. They’re so chic in a simplistic yet effective way. They really epitomized the glamour of that era.

heyy!! i'm a doll collector so this was a really sweet video to come across!!! i was just thinking abt this earlier, honestly the thing about the 2016 reboot that's unfortunate is that the clothes,, there is still very much a lack of separate fashions for the different body types, particularly curvy, and the actual quality of the outfits has had quite a downturn as well?? i mean with the movie which is only naturally gonna get more people interested in the dolls i just really hope mattel maybe kicks it up a notch with the outfit quality, also perhaps bringing back more of the named characters like christie, teresa and midge (and allan ig, lol) but like yeah!! sorry for rambling but great video :)

I can’t believe Kelly/Chelsea has molded on clothes now 🤦🏻♀️) It seems like Mattel was decreasing quality across the board around 2016 - if I remember correctly they also “rebooted” Monster High, and there was the whole American Girl “permapanties” debacle 😬 I loved seeing all the new merch they’ve come out with to promote the movie - if they’re going to stick with trying to appeal to nostalgic adults increasing the quality definitely wouldn’t hurt! I'm a new collector (like, just started) and I found that the best quality outfits for the curvy dolls are on the Looks and Extra lines. Though the Looks lines are pretty simplistic. I like the Extra line a lot more for the amount of details. It reminds me more of the Barbies I played with in childhood, but with more quality. Definately still within the "aimed at kids" ballpark. But I really do appreciate the time put into the designs and overall doll presentation. They feel a lot more substantial, and almost action-figure like rather than the fashion dolls I had in the 80's and 90's. But there are a lot of doll lines worth collecting right now, like the reboot of MH, Rainbow and Shadow high and a few others. So I feel like if Mattel wants to keep a piece of the market after the movie craze dies down, they'll have to keep the quality up. FWIW, I just find toys these days to not have the kind of quality that toys in my childhood had. So I'm really hesitant to collect anything current. But I was very pleased with the new Barbies I bought, including the ones from the movie (that everyone complains about)

My friend next door growing up had growing up skipper. Lol her mom at the time thought it was better cause she had no boobs. Me, my mom, my friend’s mom and her were porch visiting. So my friend runs in to her house and brings out the doll to show her mom that the doll grew boobs 🤣 and the reaction was priceless! 😂
I have Day to Night Ken and he doesn't just change his tie. He also takes off his vest and puts on a sparkly cumberbund. So he actually does make a bit of an effort 😊
Hi Megan, have various dolls from my childhood, from about 1967. Barbie and Stacie with their eyelashes. Barbie very arched feet and Stacie slightly lower. Also younger sister Skipper with flat feet. Francie (cousin) and two later Barbies. The shoes accessories and wigs were fabulous. Added to collection then in my daughters time years around 2002. While it was my passion, and I decorated a full beautiful house for her.. unfortunately was not her passion whatsoever. Oh yes and a very plastic Ken with all the moving joints was given to my son around 90's. With all the Ken's action gear. He kept them company in a box for many years now. A child therapist is buying it all, and while their is my mother's hand sewing and knit skills and great grandmother crochet work, my heart must be happy that its going to a very useful purpose. ❤
Wow! A few of these Barbies I used to have, Becky was my fav one out all my Barbie dolls. Funny I do remember her wheelchair didn't fit to the first floor but the balcony one did, so I made a ramp up to the balcony by cardboard boxes, I was very creative on my dolls when I was a kid 😁
My mom used to buy my sister and I only black barbies and she said she usually had to go to Toys r Us and special order them. So maybe some dolls are just more rare or there were only so many in store and then you had to catalogue order them.

It took me to adulthood to realise I can love both Barbie and Bratz for different reasons. Barbie is so wonderfully diverse now, though I don't know if there's a Barbie who wears glasses, and there certainly doesn’t seem to be an autistic Barbie! But yeah, I love dolls. I'd be interested to see a part 2 to this video. Maybe you could talk about the Barbie movies. My favourite was always Barbie As Rapunzel.
It’s great to see how diverse the brand has become! I think I had a teacher Barbie that came with glasses - I know I found a few pairs when going through the dolls I played with as a kid!
There’s definitely lots of Barbie’s with glasses and they recently released a Barbie with Down syndrome! So they are definitely becoming more diverse by the day Though Im not sure how exactly one would make an autistic barbie?? since there’s no specific physical feature or anything for someone with autism. But maybe they could make a new character in the Barbie-verse with autism for representation someday 😊 Also I can tell you that Monster high has an autistic character named Twyla who’s really cool 💜
@@FerrariCarr I know, but I was thinking along the lines of the down's syndrome doll, because they made her outfit with a lot of symbols and things. So for example, the doll could have clothing on that has a rainbow infinity symbol, which is the better symbol that represents the autistic spectrum (no puzzle pieces!). Or just canonically have an autistic Barbie character. If you wanted to though, any Barbie doll could be autistic, I get your point.

I was never upset that I wasn't skinny like barbie growing up. I was like duh shes a doll I shouldn't look like her... same with the disney princesses that people complain about. Kid's brains don't work like that. They care more about hair and skin color. I honestly think that is just something that adults (and older teens) project on their younger selves without stopping to ask themselves if they really cared as a kid or if they would have asked for curvy dolls in the first place

I've started collecting Silkstone Barbies in 2001 and stopped earlier this year. I have 40 of them. I've been collecting other fashion dolls during that time, hence the very few Silkstones. I'm slowing down.
I haven’t bought Barbie’s in a very long time, but I have heard that the quality has decreased 😢 I know Mattel lowered the quality on lots of their products around 2016 when the company was facing some financial issues. Hopefully the success of the movie shows them that consumers appreciate those details! 💜

I’m not sure if Barbie got married either but when I was little for my birthday, I got this Barbie that said just married Barbie and it was Barbie and Ken and Ken had a tuxedo and Barbie had a wedding dress it came with like a sash it said, just married and a bouquet but I’m not sure not sure

I’ve become interested in Barbie collecting recently and I’ve frantically been trying to find the Barbie’s that I now know are collectors items and their accessories. And I have some Barbie’s and clothing from my mom when she was young. And the angel face Barbie’s dress has to be the same dress I had for my Barbie’s. I’m worried I threw it away since I was like 9 and it was ripped and compared to the newer Barbie clothes it wasn’t as cool. But I know that’s the same exact dress it has to be! Edit: OH I remember now that dress wasn’t mine it was in my grandmas Barbie doll collection. I completely forgot she had Barbie dolls. Oh gosh I hope she still has them I would love to look at them. As you were looking through your moms Barbies I recognized a lot of the clothing from my grandmas house.
Oh, does your mom have the Blaine doll which was Barbies other boyfriend after Ken when they broke up I used to go to this one girls house when I was a kid because she had one and I didn’t just to like play with her Barbie and Blaine doll lol. ❤

I like the Extra line a lot more for the amount of details. It reminds me more of the Barbies I played with in childhood, but with more quality. Definately still within the "aimed at kids" ballpark. But I really do appreciate the time put into the designs and overall doll presentation. They feel a lot more substantial, and almost action-figure like rather than the fashion dolls I had in the 80's and 90's.
But there are a lot of doll lines worth collecting right now, like the reboot of MH, Rainbow and Shadow high and a few others. So I feel like if Mattel wants to keep a piece of the market after the movie craze dies down, they'll have to keep the quality up. FWIW, I just find toys these days to not have the kind of quality that toys in my childhood had. So I'm really hesitant to collect anything current. But I was very pleased with the new Barbies I bought, including the ones from the movie (that everyone complains about)

Ahh this is so fun! I loved my Barbies and Skipper! I was born in 1996 so Bratz took over at some point for me but Barbie is so iconic.

My friend next door growing up had growing up skipper. Lol her mom at the time thought it was better cause she had no boobs. Me, my mom, my friend’s mom and her were porch visiting. So my friend runs in to her house and brings out the doll to show her mom that the doll grew boobs 🤣 and the reaction was priceless! 😂

Hi Megan, have various dolls from my childhood, from about 1967. Barbie and Stacie with their eyelashes. Barbie very arched feet and Stacie slightly lower. Also younger sister Skipper with flat feet. Francie (cousin) and two later Barbies. The shoes accessories and wigs were fabulous. Added to collection then in my daughters time years around 2002. While it was my passion, and I decorated a full beautiful house for her.. unfortunately was not her passion whatsoever.
Oh yes and a very plastic Ken with all the moving joints was given to my son around 90's. With all the Ken's action gear. He kept them company in a box for many years now.
A child therapist is buying it all, and while their is my mother's hand sewing and knit skills and great grandmother crochet work, my heart must be happy that its going to a very useful purpose. ❤

Wow! A few of these Barbies I used to have, Becky was my fav one out all my Barbie dolls. Funny I do remember her wheelchair didn't fit to the first floor but the balcony one did, so I made a ramp up to the balcony by cardboard boxes, I was very creative on my dolls when I was a kid 😁

My mom used to buy my sister and I only black barbies and she said she usually had to go to Toys r Us and special order them. So maybe some dolls are just more rare or there were only so many in store and then you had to catalogue order them.

The reason they are all called barby is so that each girl or boy feels that they have an original barbie that looks like them
It took me to adulthood to realise I can love both Barbie and Bratz for different reasons. Barbie is so wonderfully diverse now, though I don't know if there's a Barbie who wears glasses, and there certainly doesn’t seem to be an autistic Barbie! But yeah, I love dolls. I'd be interested to see a part 2 to this video. Maybe you could talk about the Barbie movies. My favourite was always Barbie As Rapunzel.
It’s great to see how diverse the brand has become! I think I had a teacher Barbie that came with glasses - I know I found a few pairs when going through the dolls I played with as a kid!
There’s definitely lots of Barbie’s with glasses and they recently released a Barbie with Down syndrome! So they are definitely becoming more diverse by the day
Though Im not sure how exactly one would make an autistic barbie?? since there’s no specific physical feature or anything for someone with autism. But maybe they could make a new character in the Barbie-verse with autism for representation someday 😊
Also I can tell you that Monster high has an autistic character named Twyla who’s really cool 💜

@@FerrariCarr I know, but I was thinking along the lines of the down's syndrome doll, because they made her outfit with a lot of symbols and things. So for example, the doll could have clothing on that has a rainbow infinity symbol, which is the better symbol that represents the autistic spectrum (no puzzle pieces!). Or just canonically have an autistic Barbie character. If you wanted to though, any Barbie doll could be autistic, I get your point.

I was never upset that I wasn't skinny like barbie growing up. I was like duh shes a doll I shouldn't look like her... same with the disney princesses that people complain about. Kid's brains don't work like that. They care more about hair and skin color. I honestly think that is just something that adults (and older teens) project on their younger selves without stopping to ask themselves if they really cared as a kid or if they would have asked for curvy dolls in the first place

I've started collecting Silkstone Barbies in 2001 and stopped earlier this year. I have 40 of them. I've been collecting other fashion dolls during that time, hence the very few Silkstones. I'm slowing down.
The 1982 India Barbie is one of the most stunning Barbies. I remember her so well.

Love Barbie since the 90's but wish a little more care was put into acessories like where is the Barbie brush that most used to come with.
I haven’t bought Barbie’s in a very long time, but I have heard that the quality has decreased 😢 I know Mattel lowered the quality on lots of their products around 2016 when the company was facing some financial issues. Hopefully the success of the movie shows them that consumers appreciate those details! 💜

There’s a seperate doll brand called Steffie who’s whole thing is that she’s like a knockoff Barbie that might be why she was in a lot of eBay searches
I’ve become interested in Barbie collecting recently and I’ve frantically been trying to find the Barbie’s that I now know are collectors items and their accessories. And I have some Barbie’s and clothing from my mom when she was young. And the angel face Barbie’s dress has to be the same dress I had for my Barbie’s. I’m worried I threw it away since I was like 9 and it was ripped and compared to the newer Barbie clothes it wasn’t as cool. But I know that’s the same exact dress it has to be!
Edit: OH I remember now that dress wasn’t mine it was in my grandmas Barbie doll collection. I completely forgot she had Barbie dolls. Oh gosh I hope she still has them I would love to look at them. As you were looking through your moms Barbies I recognized a lot of the clothing from my grandmas house.
