Yes it's a very jarring change when you look at the earlier film dolls and then look at the modern day ones. The clothes were so beautifully detailed, and her face didn't look as cartoony as the newer ones.
Sure the new ones have more diversity and body types which i think is wonderful, but quality wise? Mattel went downhill. I'll never forget when i saw one of those cheap peel away surprise barbies with slime in them. It was the fairy one and it looked so horrifically cheap when this youtuber unboxed it i was appalled. The clothes were molded on plastic, and the fairy's wings looked like cheap paper. It really made me wonder how mattel went from the beautiful fairytopia doll to THAT!?

@@broadwaybrook2319 i think they know full well their quality decreased, but it's cheaper to make the less detailed dolls and parents will buy them regardless because of the Barbie name. Barbie dolls have been decreasing in quality since the 70s

      @ten-ze1pq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes! The Fairy-tastic Princess dolls released 4 years before the Mariposa sequel, and it executed the folding wings to dress gimmick so much better. I don’t understand how they could mess up so badly with the sequel doll by giving the “dress” no pattern on the outside and making the wing mechanism so much more bulky and distracting. But I guess the Barbie movie dolls were regressing by this time anyways🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

As someone who buys up old Barbies to clean, restyle, and fix them, the Barbie from Barbie in the Pink Shoes (and other types of dolls that have that style of dress change) is a frequent flyer for needing fixing since it relies on a string to do that change and if the kid pulls on it too hard to 'remove' the skirt, they just get this little mess.
I get the Barbies that are supposed to have wings (but have been lost) a lot too.
I think what is missing from most of the newer dolls is the playability factor. Yes, the gimmicks are cool and sell dolls, but I don't want to play with something that flips the doll in the long run and if I lose it, then I just have a hard plastic doll... And I can't stand when the clothes aren't removable - it limits the story telling you can do with a doll. When they have the light-up torso but the other components of the doll are lost, it doesn't seem like something fun to play with. You're just left with a cheap robotic doll. The older dolls have a more life-like quality to them.
Princess in the Pauper doll was my all-time favourite Barbie doll as a kid. She was my best friend and the regal star of all the little scenarios. Her hair is such higher quality than some of the newer dolls too. We love to see it. Thank you for such a detailed video! Really interesting to see the dolls and match some of the messed up ones I have to a Barbie movie. Explains a lot!

Oh my sweet goodness, the Sugarplum Princess Clara doll unlocked wonderful memories!! She was more of a surprise gift than usual** and I remember thinking that her dress was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. Other dolls in my toybox got to wear the top skirt sometimes *IF Clara was feeling generous that day lmao🤣* but I rarely changed her clothes because I loved this look so very much.
And boy howdy, I loved her HARD haha. Eventually, both feet broke off at the ankles and both her knees stopped holding a pose but even then, she sat in the Spot of Honor next to my bed until I left for college. SUCH a lovely doll. 🥰 Thank you for reminding me of her!
**She was a surprise for two main reasons:
    1) I had been pretending I was too old for dolls by the time this movie came out (I regretted this the moment I saw the Sugarplum Princess commercial)
    2) Barbie commercials back then didn't always confirm other skin tone options, and my parents made a point to only pick the darker girls. I liked blonde Barbie -- I did have a couple that were gifts from friends -- but seeing *only* her in TV ads for the more deluxe dolls used to make me kind of anxious lol.

They were just the nicest, most detailed dolls, and the dancing gimmick was done so well. I loved that they had changable outfits without anything being odd or clunky. Like the prince doll just had a mask/cape situation to go from human to nutcracker. So much more fun to play with than chunky knobs and finicky strings. They didn't need flashing lights or added sounds. Those dolls were just perfection for play or display, and I wish Mattel could get back to that level of quality.

It's so cool to see all these iconic barbies all together!
One thing I've always had mixed feelings about were barbie dolls with gimmicks that altered the form of the doll for the sake of a specific function (like how Mariposa had that thingy on the back to roll the wings down), just because depending on the gimmick it completely limited my ability to change the doll's clothes. I loved seeing how the outfit of a specific Barbie looked on my other Barbies, and depending on the doll, the original clothes either wouldn't come off or wouldn't fit on anyone else because of their specific format. To me, the perfect movie-adjacent Barbie was just a Barbie with the outfit of the movie - no crazy functions, no batteries needed, no buttons to push. The best changes you could make to a doll were all articulation: dolls who bent their elbows and knees were everything to me!

I remember the Christmas my parents got me Clara the nutcracker and Marzipan with her carriage and those were the only Christmas presents I played with that year. I treasured those dolls for YEARS unfortunately my Barbie collection was destroyed in a flood. Seeing you treasure my favorite doll and love and appreciate her as much as I do has literally brought tears to my eyes. Thanks so so so much for this nostalgia trip Cait!

I think the Barbie Mermaidia doll was the best if not up there. Not only could she turn into both a mermaid and a fairy, but if I recall, her skin revealed pink tattoos when you submerged her in water! I may also be biased because I played with her as a child, but she is so beautiful and detailed and I think she deserves to be one of the best.

I had merliah from the second movie and she’s was my absolute favourite doll. From what I remember is that her tattoo and hair colour only appeared in sunlight not water so since your doll is a bit old it’s experienced enough sunlight for the mark to be there permanently

*insert me crying becouse i love the alexa doll and i1m sad it was placed last-*
btw just a suggestion, you should do a ranking of all the winx club movies, or all the winx club girls (though i would prefer a movie ranking of winx :D)
    who else agrees with me?

When I was younger and Fairy Secret first came out, I begged my mom to get me the Barbie doll for it. But she had seen reviews similar to this one, that it was bad the wings sucked, and got me a Graciela doll instead. I am so glad my mom was smarter than me
