I want a horror movie where the marketing team does everything they can to hide that it's a horror movie until release and then people go in and get traumatized
I remain resolute in my belief that the best horror movies do exactly that - not advertise themselves as horror movies. That's not to say they advertise a completely different tone or subject matter, mind you. They set the audience up for drama, they're honest about that. But they don't let on that it's "horror" drama until the audience is already in their seat and thoroughly invested. Think about Jurassic Park. It's a movie about dinosaurs being resurrected, the wonders of future technology! And half the movie involves characters being eaten alive, or nearly eaten, by rampaging dinosaurs. Characters being hunted, trapped, brutalized by these animals. We see very few of these deaths directly, but the implied violence is absolutely horrific. Jurassic Park is a horror movie, through and through.
Horror has come to a point where the true horror lies in being forced to see the movie in the first place. Edit: The amount of bots in Charlie’s comment section could probably make a better horror movie than whatever this is.

From a artistic and technical standpoint I feel that horror is the hardest genre to create a well rounded movie/series. It really depends on so much like social norms what we find scary as a culture and what we accept as something out of the ordinary or mundane. I bet you make a movie about a mass shooter 50 years ago and it would shock people to their core. Now it would be written off as gimmicky or in bad taste.
I saw this movie in theatres with my boyfriend and his mom, who have both been fans of the franchise for a long time. Maybe it was just the energy of being in a theatre full of fans, but I liked it. I definitely think they were overly milking the franchise, but it’s not nearly as bad a case as others, like the Conjuring 3.
I agree in a full theatre it was worth the money at least. The last Conjuring movie that came out was doo doo! I would have been pissed if I paid for that. The red door had too many jump scares for sure but there was some good creepiness in the there. It’s a dumb/fun horror to watch on a Sunday night. There’s so much crap horror that a relatively ok horror movie nowadays is ridiculed like it’s the worst thing ever. Charlie’s too good for us now lol.
I think this one being direct sequel to 2nd movie is the final movie in this franchise, or at least the story of this family. I think they should make a new franchise or IP at this point.
To say this about a youtuber’s friend aka a complete fukkin stranger to u is so hilarious and pathetic at the same time!😭 go outside more my friend stop adoring strangers on internet!
Honestly surprised at how much Charlie disliked this one. It’s hardly the best horror ever & has its faults but I was surprised at how much I began to care about the father son dynamic & really enjoyed some of the execution. There’s worse ways to kill a couple of hours
yeah i think the problem is that horror people dont like it because its barely a horror movie and no one dies. its a pretty decent story of a father and son working through their problems together with a horror back drop. For me it really resonated as a story of a father and son finally breaking the addiction/abuse cycle.
@@saleplains that makes a lot of sense. I guess people will see it as good or bad depending on what kind of horror you’re going in for. Can’t say I went in expecting to be scared or disturbed, I just wanted some good character work and fun jumps every now and again which i’d say this delivered on
I really wish we got to see Lipstick-Face Demon more. They only showed him in like 5 scenes and each scene was 3 seconds of him doing a silly face and gesture just like the first movie had.
I remember watching The Red Door earlier this month. When I saw the opening credits with all the drawings of past moments from the previous Insidious movies and saying "It's like they're trying to remind us of better movies." Like "Hey, remember this scary part from the first movie? I bet you wish you were watching that now, huh."
Seems like another real aspect of horrors getting worse is that we are desensitized to seeing a victim get slashed for the 40th time no matter how different the slash is
The only exemption I can think of is the Terrifier movies, especially the second. Super brutal, gory, a good time with friends. Most slashers are just awful recently, though.
For those feeling burnt out on cliche/poorly acted horror movies…Bone Tomahawk (2015) also featuring Patrick Wilson is a great example of true horror and suspense that I wish had more praise
Movies like Nope and Barbarian work because they are surprising but also different at the same time. It's not just jump scares, it's the atmosphere and the let-up to the scary moments that occur
Nope was disappointing.. Wasn't scary, thought it was more boring than scary. And just don't get the hype from it. And Barbarian was bizarrely cringy more than scary...
I remember seeing the ad campaigns in youtube trying to hype it up by having an irl red door and spooking people who open it. Even without knowing anything about the series I knew it was gonna be dead on arrival.

To be honest, I think this has been happening for a long time now. Every paranormal activity after the second one, and that's being generous, had entered that territory. There's honestly only been a handful of American horror films in the last ten years that pass the smell check and only a couple of those were by all definitions, good. Horror lost its way a long time ago but, arguably at least in the West I don't know if there ever truly was a tried and true method for success in that regard. The standards by which what people found truly a horror experience varied wildly even back in the day and quite a few sharks were jumped after one movie or another found a new way to make things scary, spooky, or actually horrifying and too often their sequels lose all the good will and meaning behind what made them good.
I actually loved the first one. I remember going into it thinking it was gonna be a boring, mainstream ghost movie, and actually being pretty blown away by it
it genuinely sucks that Tiny Tim’s music is used for horror, I love his songs. he did what he loved and now it’s being twisted by garbage horror movies/games
The first two insidious films were decent. I don't even think his song was used in the third or fourth film. Keep in mind that this is Patrick Wilson's directorial debut so he's bound to make some mistakes.
The art of horror and scaring people is becoming a lost art nowadays. I think a big thing that horror nowadays needs to rely less on cheap jump scares. They need to implement ways to overstimulate our senses and play with them to make us feel scared, feel unprepared for the scary. Make us feel like we are in the situation ourselves and full on creep and scare us this way, fancy camera movement and editing as well can help this but a good storyline as well can help make it make sense and keep the tension and the feeling of being on the edge while watching the movie. Just a shame that a lot of “scary” movies are just shock movies
@@starbucktargaryen473 the indie scene knows what’s up, the recent evil dead rise in my opinion was great to creep you out and make you feel uncomfortable and even scared whoever I do think moments of overstimulation would make it much more scary. I'm a horror fanatic and I swear Charlies Intro sentence is exactly why Horror is the best genre. You either get quality movies like Alien or you get B tier trash like Wickerman. And then you have stuff like Color out of space which sits right between. Honestly no matter what gets released in the horror genre it's always gold. Either comedy or horror. Also Horror as a genre is a lot more creative and original imo. There is a lot of copy pasted trash but there is so much new fun and controversial stuff being used in artistic ways that make horror one of the most varied and special genre. Anyway off to watch Martyr have fun!
Martyrs? The 2008 one? It's been 2 hours so I hope I'm not spoiling anything. I feel like it was a ridiculous movie and not the scariest horror movie. Wasn't terrible but some movies really drag out the rough stuff and in this movie, it comes across like torture porn or something I just don't get. At a certain point, the shock wears off and they keep piling it on and I wanted the movie to move on out of boredom rather than disgust or fear or anything, it just got ridiculous. Except for that decent chunk of the movie, pretty good. Maybe I just prefer a different kind of horror, but at least people weren't lying when they said it was a rough movie. Won't be watching it again.
that being said, we actually had fun seeing it. like yeah it was all cheap jump scares and no story but thats what made it fun for us, the whole theatre was having fun it seemed like
I think I understand "quality blindness" perfectly, because I also get a kick out of cheap and terrible stuff. I love Dollar Tree toys, free games and movies, etc.
I will forever say it The Conjuring is the most greatest horror movie of all time it didn’t just rely off jump scares the story was amazing and it had that weird uneasy feeling the whole movie
One time I watched insidious 2, which is technically the 3rd in terms of time progression, so the only thing that made sense was how much I liked the interior of the house the family lived in
I saw this last night too and I actually enjoyed it, but mostly because I almost peed my pants at the first big jump scare - the theater had the sound up SO loud that the effects were more scary than the movie
It really wasn't that bad at all. I enjoyed it too. The jumpscares had me on the verge of a heart attack but other than that I thought it was a pretty sweet end to the series. I just wish that Specs and Tucker had more screen time :(
Personally, the best horror to watch is Japanese horror, with themes, music, ambience, and storytelling. There just so damn good, as well as horrifying.
I loved the first 2 films, so I was excited to see this family again, but it just never felt like an Insidious film to me. I also noticed they went with a different aspect ratio this time, making the characters zoomed in more for more close shots instead of the normal wide shots from the franchise

The problem is that modern “ horror / thriller “ movies heavily rely on jump scares and unnecessary gore . Recent horror movies have no real horror element . Just some random jumpscares along with gore all over again . Look at all the conjuring and insidious sequels . Conjuring 1 and insidious 1 did a great job with mixing jumpscares with real horror things . Sequels are just bland with zero to no scary scenes . Like “ the nun “ movie which had hell of a potential to be one of the scariest movies of all time . But it was meh . Everything else is somewhat same . A24 movies are great but they aren’t really “ horror “ . They are psychological thrillers which always has somewhat a same but unnerving plot . Only a very few amount of hollywood horror movies actually scared me and most of them were from 2000s or eary 2010s . For an example Sinister , Conjuring , Jeepers Creepers ( 1 , 2 ) , Dead silence ( probably the best and one of the scariest horror movies of all time and mad underrated ) , Strangers , Lake Mungo , paranormal activity . These are actually scary if you watch them at night . Specially dead silence , jeepers creepers and strangers . They do not have tons of gore and jumpscares . Even movies like jeepers creepers are supposed to about gore and a monster who eats humans , the movies barely had any gore . But they had real horror elements . Also the use of practical and digital vfx plays a huge part . Most of these movies had practical effects which creates more atmosphere . Recent movies are just cgi crap . Hollywood horror genre is so mid rn . I used to have some hope for the upcoming five nights at freddies movie . But the last trailer looks so bad and way too bright to be a fnaf movie . This is also another franchise with hella potential but I can’t predict shi so imma wait for it until it is released . But i gotta say , Asian people are hella talented when it comes to making thriller , horror genre movies / shows . Every one of them are actually scary but also has good plot lines . Not only horror , thriller , they do a really great job in every genre with extremely creative and new ideas . Still don’t get how they are not well recognized and underrated
This movie wasn’t terrible for me cause three girls in the front got kicked out for being loud, and some country hick behind me jumped out of his seat to chase them, yelling “imma give you the whoopin yo daddy never gave you”
Fun bad is when the creators were just trying to have fun with it and it came out bad. You get the energy and creativity mixed with it just not working how they wanted at all, if that take it too seriously then it just becomes dull. There is a breaking point where it so over the top serious and ridged it becomes funny again, but in general fun bad comes from a place of passion without the skill to execute
horror films make me lol in general, the first insidious where the red faced demon was in his home sewing with needle hands while through the window played in the background had me laughing for minutes😂

It really depends on so much like social norms what we find scary as a culture and what we accept as something out of the ordinary or mundane. I bet you make a movie about a mass shooter 50 years ago and it would shock people to their core. Now it would be written off as gimmicky or in bad taste.
Kind of like that movie Rampage from years ago!

Yeah I didn’t think it was that bad, the comments make it sound like it’s going down as the worst film in cinematic history😂 idk I enjoyed it
I agree in a full theatre it was worth the money at least.
I don't mind the insidious films or the conjuring films but I always get so confused by which ones which
I think this one being direct sequel to 2nd movie is the final movie in this franchise, or at least the story of this family. I think they should make a new franchise or IP at this point.

For sure
yeah i think the problem is that horror people dont like it because its barely a horror movie and no one dies. its a pretty decent story of a father and son working through their problems together with a horror back drop. For me it really resonated as a story of a father and son finally breaking the addiction/abuse cycle.

Charlie was low-key on point with the Tiny Tim song. I'm a professional musician and I can hardly do that, and I always sing in my falsetto.

Seems like another real aspect of horrors getting worse is that we are desensitized to seeing a victim get slashed for the 40th time no matter how different the slash is
I think most people that enjoy gore dont watch to be "oh my god thats soo gross"
They watch to be "Thats soo based"
Aka movies are lazy and copies
The only exemption I can think of is the Terrifier movies, especially the second. Super brutal, gory, a good time with friends. Most slashers are just awful recently, though.

Bone Tomahawk was a surprise for me
And pearl by ti weet
Movies like Nope and Barbarian work because they are surprising but also different at the same time. It's not just jump scares, it's the atmosphere and the let-up to the scary moments that occur

Nope was disappointing.. Wasn't scary, thought it was more boring than scary. And just don't get the hype from it. And Barbarian was bizarrely cringy more than scary...

Charlie’s rendition of the “living in the sunlight” song made me burst out laughing. Very unexpected lol

Yeah gotta keep on the indie scene lots of great ones. Also foreign films!!
@@starbucktargaryen473 the indie scene knows what’s up, the recent evil dead rise in my opinion was great to creep you out and make you feel uncomfortable and even scared whoever I do think moments of overstimulation would make it much more scary. I want to do a video about the current state of horror today and how it’s not even in the conversation when it comes to movies anymore besides discussing the classics
Um okay but WHICH Wicker Man? Surely not the original from 1973 with Christopher Lee? That’s a folk horror staple bro. Nick Cage that’s the bad fun
Good luck
The very concept of a "best genre" makes no sense.
@@saltiney8578 It's subjective, I bet someone out there would say that musicals are the best movies, even if I disagree.

Charlie bursting into Tiny Tim lyrics was more horrifying than the entire movie
every scene was an attempted jump scare. like literally after the door was painted every scene had a jump scare it didnt add anything to the "story"
that being said, we actually had fun seeing it. like yeah it was all cheap jump scares and no story but thats what made it fun for us, the whole theatre was having fun it seemed like

Hereditary is the greatest horror movie of all time, but conjuring is up there
One time I watched insidious 2, which is technically the 3rd in terms of time progression, so the only thing that made sense was how much I liked the interior of the house the family lived in
I saw this last night too and I actually enjoyed it, but mostly because I almost peed my pants at the first big jump scare - the theater had the sound up SO loud that the effects were more scary than the movie
Same I actually thought it wasn’t too bad
Saw it 2 nights ago or so, & absolutely loved it, honestly.
It really wasn't that bad at all. I enjoyed it too. The jumpscares had me on the verge of a heart attack but other than that I thought it was a pretty sweet end to the series. I just wish that Specs and Tucker had more screen time :(

For an example
Sinister , Conjuring , Jeepers Creepers ( 1 , 2 ) , Dead silence ( probably the best and one of the scariest horror movies of all time and mad underrated ) , Strangers , Lake Mungo , paranormal activity .
