Many people know this but just adding that Luigi’s dash attack was supposed to have one last strong hit at the end of it but it never got programmed. Given the frame data and disjoint the move might’ve actually been usable had this last hit actually been there
If memory serves, the way the programming works is that the hitbox is “there” in the code, but since it occurs outside the programmed “active frames” the hitbox never shows up. Kind of like Ganondorf’s jab 2 which can only be seen if he has a bunny hood on, per that one AsumSaus short. A similar mistake was made on Link’s nair which keeps the hitboxes around for too long
I would honestly just drill turnarounds without walking and get to where you have finer control over the stick, eventually your muscle memory will become more nuanced but that would be a good place to start building those more minimal movements and getting more comfortable. Has good real game applications too like turnaround uptilts, grabs, jabs, wavedashes back to ledge etc later.
One of two things is likely happening: 1. You're trying to side tilt while dashing 2. You're tapping the stick too far Side tilt isn't possible while dashing. You have to be either walking or standing still. I'd recommend practicing walking. Walk, then press A, and you'll get a side tilt. From there you can work towards doing it a little faster until eventually you can do it while standing.
While Sheik's dash attack providing for her boost grab is huge, I think Peach's is superior because it knocks down at 0%. If Sheik had a move that knocked down at 0% (besides up b and dthrow lol) it would be enormous for her in neutral. They are both easily the best two in any case.
Ness dash attack would be so much better if it didn't perfectly set up a hitstun cancel. If you hit all 3 hits, first on knocks down, second jab locks, and third pops up, so they do neutral getup mid air and can act really early
I was gonna say the move is borderline unusable because of that. You can also just easily di and make it punishable on hit. Really thought it would be bottom 5 lol..
I remember the first time I played melee I pulled up my favorite smash character Kirby. When I felt that dash attack I knew then and there something had gone wrong with my boy
Young Link main here. YL dash attack is probably the second best move in his kit besides nair and maybe downsmash. YL dash attack forces a tech option, and can often lead to tech chasing with dash attack alone, and it's pretty consistent. It can be CC'ed pretty easily like all of YL's moves, but so can every other dash attack. It's just more common to CC YL's dash attack since CC is so strong against all of his options. Dash attack is also a phenomenal kill move. It catches a ton of recoveries, and sends at a pretty brutal angle. If you dash attack a Falco who's recovering at 0, it'll force him offstage with enough knockback that you can guarantee a drop zone nair killing edgeguard. It also has a reverse hitbox which is inside YL, making it deceptively large. If I was tiering dash attacks, I would 100% put it above Puff and Samus. Puff and Samus can't really follow up off dash attack, and only use them as kill moves. Honestly, if YL didn't have such a good dash attack, he would be a far worse character. It's a great spacing move, it catches landings, edgeguards, and can start combos. Love it.
Mewtwo's dash attack knocks down spacies at 0. Its a great burst option. And not that it makes it any better, but if you hit grab the same frame that you fall off a platform with kirby dash attack you instantly grab when you hit the ground
Peach's dash attack is also an anti-air and can also hit opponents both up and sideways just by spacing and timing it slightly differently. In fact its probably the strongest dash attack for hitting opponents horizontally AND vertically.
As far as I know Roy dash attack is like that because they used marth’s as a reference and made the animation longer because Roy but forgot to change the frames the hitbox is active from marth’s. If you look at marth’s it’s also active from 12-15, but marth’s is 49 frames long and Roy’s is 57. They tried to make Roy’s slower on startup and endlag, but didn’t actually move any hitbox flags so it’s still iasa frame 40 and comes out before Roy’s sword is out which is why it’s like that
Roy's dash attack is actually quite good, since it sweeps low for so long, and it can combo into fsmash/side b/grab against spacies and falcon. Dash attacks are overall pretty good in Melee, but I do think Roy's DA deserves some credit.
@@TheAmazingMrSloop i mean, it lets it pick up missed techs more consistently than dtilt will? It's also safer on shield than a dtilt a lot of the time because of its shieldpush. Really an underrated move that gets trashed on because of a mistake that honestly improved it.

Samus dash attack is definitely a solid option in neutral and mid percents. I find I get punished at low percents against spacies/marth especially if I hit on shield or they jump above it.

I can't speak for Brawl, but Zelda's DA has always been really damn good. It doesn't pop-up in later titles but it's still one of the faster DA's and it has really strong knock-back. It kills really reliably in Ultimate and in Sm4sh it was low-key really funny how strong it was due to Rage. If Zelda had great movement in any of these games, I'm almost positive she would be a Middle-High tier character on that DA alone. Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention: Zelda's DA in Melee is one of the two moves she has that really shit on Ice Climbers. DA is stupidly good at seperating Popo and Nana. And in Ultimate you can do a really funny thing where if you happen to be close enough to your Phantom Knight's sword swing, you can quickly DA while your opponent is getting hit to since it's Zelda's fastest burst option and this tends to be a LOT more damage and knockback than most players are ready for lol. (I know you can also Lightning Kick in the same situation, but Zelda's air-speed is pretty slow and you run the risk of missing the sweet spot. If you can hit it though, dude's is probably gonna die.)
Mewtwo dash attack is useful versus Luigi because it has crazy priority so you can use it preemptively to clank with incoming downsmashes and get spacing advantage. It's not a great burst option since you can't combo off the initial hit, instead it's better used as an approach tool that can be really awkward to punish. I'd put it above gnw personally
