    The GD 18yr (Billy Walker) is what set me on my journey. As others have commented, it was a :WOW" experience. Fortunately, I was table to pick up the 15yr, 18yr, and 21 yr from the BW era ; they are still waiting on my shelf - once opened, they will be gone and unable to be replaced. Should you ever be in the neighborhood, it would be a good reason to start!!
    Always enjoy your reviews.

    We all have a life changing whisky - I think mine was Ledaig 10 a few years ago. Went from being an on and off whisky drinker for 15 years to diving down the rabbit hole. Cheers Alan

    I recently bought a bottle of Glendronach 12, and due to the fact that it had such a predominant sulphur influence, I poured the entire bottle down the drain. This is maybe the third time I've done such a thing in my life, so unfortunately, I will not be purchasing any new bottles of GD any time soon. Fortunately, I still have a couple of old bottles of both the 15 and 18 from 2019 that I will savor and enjoy all the more.

      Richard ..there can be a first off the opening issue here ... putting it through one of those wine gadgets meant to add air to wine might help and let it open to the air for a day ... a sad story.

    Alan, good review and notes. Enjoyed the 12 year when first starting out and couldn't imagine paying almost 2X for the 15 but after a few years did find at $95 so took a chance and the 15 year Revival is so worth under 100. I'm sure it is a Dr Barrie bottle. Cheers!

    Funny timing. I tried the Barrie 15 year old yesterday for my birthday. Would NOT recommend picking one up for the price. The Billy Walker bottles are better in almost every way.

    Thanks for reviewing Alan.
    Have tried this one earlier in my whisky journey (back in the days when I did love sherried whiskies) ... but with the changing of the palate I left it for others to enjoy.

    Hey Alan, I was thinking that as a whisky reviewer who has such a massive collection, it might be useful to viewers if you told people "You'll like this whisky if you also like these ones... but if you prefer these other expressions, then this whisky might not be up your street" etc.
    So, not really head-to-head comparisons, more other malts with a similar profile. I've been drinking Scotch for a long time but I look at your shelves and realise that I know nothing, and mapping out which flavour profiles suit me is useful (and potentially money saving).
    Anyway, just a thought, love the vids, keep 'em coming.
    Cheers.

    Nice review 👌. I've tried this one for the first time a few months ago, and I think it's a really nice dram. But at that particular occasion it had quite though competition, Glen Garioch 15yo Sherry Cask Matured, Glenturret 12yo 2022 release and Bunnahabhain 12yo CS 2022 release. To me me it came in at an honourable 4th place. Bunna 12yo came out on top that evening 🍷cheers

    Interesting review, thanks Alan. I've stopped buying Glendronach but not because I made a decision to do so but simply because of price/my budget, and for that each person is potentially different. All whisky is a batch product so GD15 would today still differ somewhat regardless of who made it. GD15 today can't compete with past bottlings that were over-aged due to the distillery being temporarily mothballed. So it's really up to you whether you feel it's good value at the price(s) in your market.

    I fell in love with the GD18 in 2018 and was still smitten in 2019. Now? I have a bottle from late 2021 (still un-chill filtered) and I havestruggled from the moment it opened. It is so hot, like rubbing a scotch bonnet over my tongue, that it is difficult to drink. Years in the bottle has not helped. Absolutely disgusting to be fair. So no more new GD for me (I have enough auction bottles from BW in the stash now, cannot beat the overaged bottles).

  • @Bob-ts2tu
    @Bob-ts2tu 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The new revival isn't a patch on the old one, it doesnt have the depth and feels a bit 'thinner', but we all know the reasons why. I dont like the way glendronach hiked up their prices ridiculously so, especially the 18 which i also loved, however to be fair, if i hadn't ever had the old revival 15 for so many years, and just jumped straight into the 'new' revival, id possibly be less critical and say 'not too bad a drop that..', but the disappointment plays a part, so maybe like you need to try the new 15 again and start with a blank sheet. GL and thanks for the review.

    I’m visiting England from the United States. Just discovered your channel. Love your reviews! I’m visiting. Scotland next week. Going to the deanston distillery. I’m going to get the Deanston 18 for sure. Should I get glencadem 10 or ledaig 10. Also visiting the Glengoyne distillery, any recommendations.

      Hey James where are you visiting in England?
      Deanston will be good as you can pick up Bunnahabhain and ledaig bottles there as there sister distilleries...the Glencadam /Ledaig debate will depend if your a peat guy or not...Ledaig is peaty...Glengoyne is a great visit however the shop can be a little pricey...dont be shy to ask to try samples at the distilleries...your close to both Glasgow and Edinburgh lots of whisky bars and shops...enjoy fella...thanks for watching...where in the

    • @brukuns
      @brukuns 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's the NCF version. The new chill filtered version is very inferior to this, I have tried both. I don't understand why reviewers keep releasing reviews of this old version, it helps nothing.

    Sadly, I only discovered GD15 after the Billy Walker era. But 5-6 years ago it was still a great whisky and a bona fide "sherry bomb". But over time (and not just suddenly, with the loss of "no chill-filtration") it seemed to me it was losing a little depth of flavour with each successive release. Stopped buying it altogether last year, as by then I felt it had gone from outstanding to fairly unremarkable and not worth the money any more. Anyone else have the same experience?

  • @brukuns
    @brukuns 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I don't understand why there are almost no reviews of the new chill filtered GlenDronachs and reviewers keep release reviews of the NCF versions. It's not the same whisky and the NCF bottles are not available at all. So this review does not help with new purchases. Everyone thinking of buying a GlenDronach 15 should take this review with a grain of salt, I have tried this reviewed version and the newer Chill Filtered version and they're quite different. The new whisky although good is very inferior. Take note.

    • @thewhiskyfriend
      @thewhiskyfriend  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The reason as i said for not buying new Glendronachs was the lack of transparancy on the tubes as Glendronach still maintain there is no difference....not sure...the big difference for me is that the billy walker 15 was all oloroso and rachel barries are px and oloroso...might help if i review both bottlings side by side....

    • @brukuns
      @brukuns 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thewhiskyfriend There's diference between the NCF Rachel bottle and the new Rachel filtered bottle, I tried them both. Very different, the NCF (your bottle) is significantly better. Reviewers are not picking up on this (probably because no one wants to buy it). I found one review comparing the Rachel NCF 18 and the new Rachel 18, but nothing on the 15. There's an opportunity for you to create some content.
      I actually think your 15 is better even than the new filtered 18 (there's older whisky in your bottle).

    • @jbar6284
      @jbar6284 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      > there's older whisky in your bottle
      It depends on the bottling date. GD was mothballed 1996-2001. For GD15, the last year of "over-age" is bottles bottled in 2016. That's the same year (April) Brown-Forman bought GlenDronach. So there might be a few bottles of GD15 with Rachel's name on that were over-aged, but comparatively few.
      As suggested above, GD can't compete with GD over-aged. A more meaningful comparison is between GD with and without the ncf labelling when both are not over-aged. In addition to the in-depth dramface GD article (& discussion), which is well worth reading, there's also suggestions from some people who've observed "floaty bits" in their GD bottlings when at lower temperatures. The dramface article makes the case that: a) cf and ncf are not black-and-white; that there are areas of grey, & b) GD/Barrie say their processes haven't changed. So there may have been some aspects of chill filtration at times utilised under Walker, and those have continued under BF/Barrie.

    • @travisfaircloth
      @travisfaircloth 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi. GD took off the NCF from the labels not because they started chill filtering differently, but because GD under BW was not apart of the SWA. "The removal of the ‘non-chill-filtered’ label was intended to mitigate any legal proceedings that the SWA could have begun with the distillery if its filtering methods were deemed to fall under the classification of ‘chill-filtered’. B-F from Dramface article.

    • @brukuns
      @brukuns 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jbar6284 The ones I have tried were both the same age then. The NCF was from 2021. The NCF was much better, another league.
