There truly is no foolin' this is a pip!
Trader Vic may be known for the Mai Tai, Fog Cutter, and Scoprion, but if there was a Trader Vic's Mt Rushmore the Banana Cow would be hard not to put in the 4th position. This is probably the first well-known cocktail from Victor Bergeron and came about in the mid-1930s in the days of Hinky Dinks. It's simple, yet delicious.
Omit the rum and add a little more milk to get yourself a tasty drink for the teetotaler (or child).
While the banana cow might be an easy recipe to use as a template, it's pretty good as is. A quick strain would work well or better yet, take the original spec and put it in a blender. A light and airy drink is more ideal than a dense and icy slushy, and since making this video I've come to the conclusion that a room temp banana beats a frozen banana when trying to get the right texture.
I did miss one Trader Vic-ism about the Banana Cow that I came across after I finished this video from UltimateMaiTai.com:
"The Banana Cow is the greatest hangover drink as far as I’m concerned. People are in a rut serving Bloody Marys, and they really kill you rather than cool you. But milk is good for you, and bananas are good for your stomach. Many is a morning I could count a lot of people waiting for me to open my doors for a Rum or Banana Cow to cool it, heal it, and cure it completely.”"

You really completed the hole left in my life when Distinguished spirits quit.
Derek has to work on getting his voice a little deeper. :D
Do you know why he stopped making videos? Those got me through the pandemic!
@@HotTubMKE involved in other projects it would seem. th-cam.com/video/4kCTfy41-uM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=RU8JLJ3Io8cqe68f

Just had a banana cow at Trader Vic's in Atlanta. He made a 1991 version. It was creamy and delicious.
Rum-Bar overproof might work great!
As for a hungover cure, a cheesy omelet with avocado, some coffee and plenty of electrolytes always does the trick for me🗿👍
The best Banana Cow that I ever had was at Trad’r Sam in SF. I believe it might’ve been more like the 2.0 version but with a more generic dark rum.
If you’ve never had it, howlers head banana whiskey is legit. It tastes a lot more like real bananas than it does banana flavouring
Hangover cures are definitely a real thing
Not ones that involve rum
Your thumbnail photos, with the recipe, truly make my cocktail phone photo album look amazing. Appreciate that. I love the collins/highball glass with the print. Where can one get a set of those? Cheers.
Thanks! I think the glass is from barconic
I do wonder what the difference would be with using a Gros Michel vs cavendish banana...
Getting back to frozen, blender drinks that can be SO tasty. And upgrading them with choice of rums, bitters, etc. Another reason why I enjoy this channel. Is that the VitaMix from Costco?
Thank you, and yes this is the Costco Vitamix
Would have been better back then too since the gros michel banana was still common. They say they tasted more like the banana flavoring we know versus the bland bananas we eat today.
If only someone would make a banana liqueur video 🤔
Tropical Standard's Banana Bunch says hello!
It’s makes a appearance. Tune in next week!
Gros Michael - Miami Fruit has it in Season
Yum banana is my favorite
Liquado de platano was one of my favourite things as a kid, I'm sure a Banana Cow would be up my alley. I don't have a drink mixer so I'd probably do the original recipe in blender, but with Havana Club since that's the light rum I usually have.
Excited to try this one
I think I am going to try this with subbing Tropical Standard's banana liqueur for the sugar.
Amaizing drink with good rum!
Great comparison. I ordered one of these at Trader Vic's Emeryville and the bartender did a good job replicating the version that included a little vanilla (via syrup, not extract that is called is called for) and blended it. It was fantastic and avoided the chunking issue when using a drink mixer. I really liked this.
I’m glad I didn’t run across your post until I filmed this, otherwise I would have had to find those glasses.
My gut feeling when you started listing the alternative rums people suggested was that many were too heavy and intense for such a light, mildly flavored drink. Heavy duty Jamaican and Demerara rums are going to stomp all over the banana and milk. I'm thinking maybe an Appleton, maybe Blackwell, maybe Plantation Stiggins' Fancy. Something with a bit more distinctive character than your typical Puerto Rican rum, but not something super intense.
You need to use The Funk rum. It will intensify the banana flavor.
Great video! Call me crazy but to avoid that texture issue or having to strain, instead of a whole ripe banana what about using a 4 oz tub of banana baby food? It's already pureed and contains no additives or sugar since it's for babies.
In order, I'd use a super funky Jamaican or a demerara
Hahahaha and that's what everyone picks lol
Hi Derek, I was wondering, since you've made a decent amount of Banana cocktails on the channel, have you ever made and drank the Fay Wray?
I haven’t, but it’s on my list of things to do soon.
Hi Derek,
I am visiting LA this summer and I was wondering if it’s possible to visit Trader Sam’s Tiki Room without having tickets to the Disney park.
Also, is it worth the trip if I’m staying downtown?
Ugh...the "B" word again... That's "barf," for those who don't know me and my position on bananas. 😅
🍌 much more to come!
