Rory Stewart: Whip system makes the UK an 'elected dictatorship'

  • Former MP and minister Rory Stewart has told Sky News that the whip system in Parliament makes the UK an "elected dictatorship" - no matter the party in government.
Once a rival to Boris Johnson for the Tory leadership, he said that the system meant that ministers were often appointed due to their loyalty, rather than ability.
The former spy and diplomat was also scathing of western relations towards Russia over Ukraine, saying that providing arms to Ukraine was one of the only options left to counter the Kremlin.

We might get lucky when the Queen dies, there will be a chance to have a full constitutional revamp, removing the monarchy and reforming parliament to be functional as a republic.
Unfortunately, thats probably even less likely than Labour using an election win to pass Proportional Representation (which would solve many of our current electoral problems)

This is exactly how a democracy is supposed to work. Unfortunately the current system is rigged in a way to prevent this from happening (deliberately, I would imagine)
We get to vote in our MPs.. sure, but .. our Draconian voting system doesn't allow fair party representation. And regardless of which party is elected a majority .. what is the point of having those MPs when they just vote as the whip tells them, it completely defeats the point
And to top it off, we have major inflation, we aren't building enough houses, wages are low and stagnant.. I mean.. we're a "developed" country where over 2.5 million people need food banks so they don't Starve. So many no longer afford to use their electricity or heating

No matter that the cuts mean less money for health, education, security, etc. The fact that for those on lower wages it can mean that the money they gain means a cheap pair of trainers and a takeaway at the end of the year each they will vote for it. The fact that the top earners can afford private health care, schooling and live in gated communities doesn't occur to them ,any more than the fact that the higher tax payers get the cuts as well. 1% of naff all is naff all. 1% of a good wodge is a good wodge. I don't know why basic economics isn't in the school curriculum for all youngsters,or maybe i do.

A very clever man. It's the nation's real loss that he is no longer in politics.

God damn it Rory start your own party or something as you'd have my vote and hopefully many others. Politics needs this man.
