Didn't have a coat hanger so I popped the wire handles off a couple of old paint cans and straightened them. Worked great! Saved $$ and got the job done in about 10 mins total.
I cut up a coat hanger and tried over and over to get the radio out. No one mentions it but the steering wheel on a Windstar is right in the way so it is awkward to begin with. I worked on it for a couple of hours over two days. I could not get the radio to budge. Finally, I went to Walmart and bought the loop tools for about $6. Using these tools I got the radio out in about five minutes. Apparently the radio is tight enough that you have to wiggle it back and forth to get it to come out. And, it is nearly impossible to wiggle it while holding outward pressure on the coat hanger wire because the wire bends. If your radio isn't as tight as mine then the coat hanger wire could work. Otherwise, you'll need something stiffer. The loop tools are stiffer and also have curved ends which make it easier to grip the latches.
Hey. Great video. It really helped me out. I did, however make one modification. I cut 2 pieces instead of 4 and bent them to look like the tool. Made taking out the radio a little bit easier.
Did it this morning and it works great. I only suggest use the hex keys and a flat head if you dont need to take the pannel off....pop in the hex keys on one side and bend them away from the radio. Then use a flat head to remove one side at a time and boom it comes out ez
Dude, this has been messing me up for days, thank you. I used straightened pieces of deer fence. Guide it inwards (towards the deck) as you insert if having trouble.
Thank you very much....saved me a 20 mile r.t. to town and $10.00 at WalMart for tool.....very much appreciated from an "old timer" in Southern Maryland!!!!
well the coat hangers wouldnt work for me, guess i didnt have any heavy enough. but for anyone having the same problem, four 16 penny nails worked perfectly.
neither the hanger or the nails worked for me. I stuck the claw of my hammer into the tape deck and yanked the radio out. worked like a charm; of course the factory radio is useless now but it's getting replaced anyways.
We just did this and it worked great. Ok but first used a coat hanger with too thin of wire which did not work. I was trying on one side and my husband the other and wasn't working. Told him to just do it as we were pulling against each other and it slipped right out :) So the hanger should be thicker. Almost think enough to fit right in the hole. They should only go in about an inch. we also just used a curved wire for each side instead of the four pieces. Hope this helps and thanks for the great video!!!
Thank you I was thinking about doing that exact thing. I had done it years ago, but I wasn’t sure if you had to have the little nubs on the end of the tool, which was why I was making certain I didn’t need the actual tool. Thank you again
93 f350 radio had these holes but a coathangar just wouldn't do it. I had to get really violent with that hunk of junk radio to get it outta there! Ripped faceplate of radio off then with 2 giant pipe wrenches pulled until those steel tabs ripped.
How far do you insert to engage the release? I used the tool. Seemed like it would go in a long, long way. Pushed out on the loops and disintegrated my radio. Now there's no leverage fulcrum to move out the releases. :(
Figured it was something like that but thanks for the video! A couple of my preset buttons don't work and the volume knob It's crazy when you try to adjust it up it goes down and down it goes up and you've spin it around and it doesn't work in blah blah blah. Finally frustrated enough to do something about it!! Thanks!
I used a dremel to copy the little inside dip just before the ends, as the actual tools have, before it finally worked. search: Scosche DT1 Radio Removal Tool and zoom in to see what i mean.
I have seen a few other videos like this but seeing you do it and I've seen you work on the same style truck as mine troubleshooting issues well actually try to use a coat hangers to remove it so buying the tools
NOTICE !!!!!!! I'm not entirely sure how it is on all of them but on mine I kept pushing the wire to far in and couldn't get it to work, once you feel some resistence you don't really need to go any deeper. Also side note, I had to push inwards but if you get them in the right spot and futz around a bit you'll figure it out, I also needed something to gently pry with to get the hunk of metal to move. Good luck to anyone who may need it!
Thanks for posting this - I tried the coat hangers but didn't push out ward I will try again tomorrow,if it doesn't work I will try another posters advice with some 16d nails either way thx can't see buying the tool especially since I will only use it once !!
Managed to remove the radio ok - thanks for your tips with that. Would you know of a reliable site that has the codes that doesn't charge over $20.00? Phillip
where can we get the radio code for same model of radio in the video, is it on the back of the radio? printed card with the radio code is long gone, ford dealer said they don't have any information for anything over 10 years old.
What year Ranger does this work on? My truck is on its second radio replacement as I bought it second hand. No "four hole" near my radio in my 1990 Ranger! The bezel extends across the driver's side dash past the radio almost to the glove box. Help!
+FordTechMakuloco Thank you very much. I think the ground wire may be loose either at the radio or the antenna, because the AM radio reception is terrible. Having a local mechanic check it out Fri. He has the tool you just showed.
FordTechMakuloco I messaged you on Facebook like you asked. I really need your guidance please and thanks, I can't remove the damn radio out it just won't budge
Good evening, I think ask this before, can you do a Video on how to fix a 2012 Ford F-150 4x4 XLT 5.0L the Radio quite work I checked all the Fuses and it still won’t Power up, the Clock is the only thing Blinking. Thank You.
I have a 2011 Ford transit van with the stock radio. I bought the keys to take it out but it seems the tabs that need to click into the keys are mangeld beyond belief. What can I do to get the radio out without destroying the dash?
I know this is regarding a stereo, but I have a question about a DVD player in my 02 Excursion. Recently bought it from the original owner, the only thing not working right is the DVD player in the backseat. Tried twice to put in a DVD for the kids and it had enough power to take in the DVD and a quick blip appeared on the screen. Now there is NO power to it and the DVD is stuck in it. I looked through the owners manual to see which fuse is linked to it, but the owners manual did not show. Also I noted that the stock stereo uses several buttons to able or disable the DVD player in back. Since the previous owner has an aftermarket Kenwood stereo installed in front, I don't know if that could be part of the problem or not? I called my local Ford dealer and they said they don't know, and never heard of it. Do you know any likely problems with this, or does it sound like the whole unit is fried and needs replacement? I can't find anything on the internet about specific problems/troubleshooting. Thanks! Julie
Will removing the radio reset all the settings? One of the select buttons stopped working and the balance on the radio is set all the way to the back and I have no way to bring it back to the front
am i the only one who had terrible luck with this? I couldn't tell what was going on until it ripped out the entire dash with radio still attached. So I look behind and i ended up just prying it out. I used nails and a coat hanger and neither worked to unclip the radio from the dash. Oh well.
Are you sticking them full in then backing out just a bit? If the brackets are indeed broken you will need to push them in manually from the backside what vehicle you working on exactly?
maawl I would follow what I do in this video NO HEAT: Ford Windstar Blend Door Actuator Removal and remove that lower storage bin and you are going to have to look up in there and manually push the tangs back
What is wrong with me? I've just come inside after working for a half hour on this. Could it be that the truck is 20 years old and the snaps are very stiff? My coat hangers bend and bend, I pull and pull, but the radio laughs at us.
Steve K Just to followup, I bought a set of the real tools, just a few dollars, and the radio came right out. I think it was the coat hanger metal not being stiff enough.

dude you just saved my ass cause I couldn't find them tools in my tool box today appreciate it man

Finally someone explained. Been at it for an hour. I appreciate you
well the coat hangers wouldnt work for me, guess i didnt have any heavy enough. but for anyone having the same problem, four 16 penny nails worked perfectly.
+Trav ice Saved my life.
nice!
+Trav ice 16 penny mails? Those wouldn't even go in the holes in the radio in my 2004 F-250 Super Duty. You didn't mean 6D, did you?
+Ron Berg no i used 16 penny on my 01' maybe they changed em. i was a carpenter for 8 years lol. i know nails.
neither the hanger or the nails worked for me. I stuck the claw of my hammer into the tape deck and yanked the radio out. worked like a charm; of course the factory radio is useless now but it's getting replaced anyways.
Thanks, i just bought a 2001 Expedition, and it had a stereo in it which was not hooked up, this saved me a trip.

don’t know if mines just mean or what cus i can’t get it out to save my life 💀
How did you get it out
You need to yell at it and then say sorry and then get it an ice cream cone then it will come out
93 f350 radio had these holes but a coathangar just wouldn't do it. I had to get really violent with that hunk of junk radio to get it outta there! Ripped faceplate of radio off then with 2 giant pipe wrenches pulled until those steel tabs ripped.
It’s the thick hangars! Thanks bro! It worked great!
How far do you insert to engage the release? I used the tool. Seemed like it would go in a long, long way. Pushed out on the loops and disintegrated my radio. Now there's no leverage fulcrum to move out the releases. :(
Just saved me a trip to NAPA. Thanks man!
Worked like a charm, thanks! The trick is pushing them to the side like you mentioned. Thanks for saying that and for making the video!
You just saved me 20 bucks
Edit: It also works with allen wrenches that fit in the holes
You just saved me a big hassle. Thanks for posting.
Not just engine stuff, but even how to take out the radio, thanks Makuloco!!!
God bless you sir. Been wrestling with it almost 2 hours-the hangers worked in about 5 seconds.
Nice!
nice one! been struggling getting mine out.. nice tip about pushing them outwards.. came out straight away! 😁
Just did it and worked perfectly on my 01 Escape. Thanks a lot dude!
Thank you that, I thought that would work but I'm glad there was a video so I didn't have to take a chance screwing anything up
Thank you so much cheaper then cheap😂 && you saved me time & money which you can’t never get back
Figured it was something like that but thanks for the video! ¡Muchas gracias compadre! Great great save my time...and money!
Great video. I used filed down coat hanger hooks but any thickish wire will do.
Thanks for the advice!!!!! If I had money, I'd pay you lots!

the tools work a lot smoother and are under $5 but good explanation on the hangers, They do work it just takes a little patience
Allen keys work also😌
you can also use allen keys
Sure can! Thanks for the comment! Worked perfectly!
Cheers
Welding rod works. Be sure and knock all the flux off the rod and wipe it clean, round the ends going into the holes
Thanks for posting this - I tried the coat hangers but didn't push out ward I will try again tomorrow,if it doesn't work I will try another posters advice with some 16d nails either way thx can't see buying the tool especially since I will only use it once !!
nooo i just got plastic hangers
Man, that was easy! I got it first time! Thank you!
thanks for the video! saved me a lot of time and a few bucks!!!
Managed to remove the radio ok - thanks for your tips with that. Would you know of a reliable site that has the codes that doesn't charge over $20.00?
Phillip
Excellent. To the point video that works.
Thanks for closed captions and wow use coat hanger instead damn special tool cost $$$$$$$
where can we get the radio code for same model of radio in the video, is it on the back of the radio? printed card with the radio code is long gone, ford dealer said they don't have any information for anything over 10 years old.

I have a 2002 Windstar and I would like to know where the antenna is? Can anyone tell me?? Thanks in advance.
+ah downs It is built into the rear quarter glass not sure which side but you will see a grid embedded into the glass.
+FordTechMakuloco Thank you very much. I think the ground wire may be loose either at the radio or the antenna, because the AM radio reception is terrible. Having a local mechanic check it out Fri. He has the tool you just showed.

YOU are my salvation on my PU ..
THANKS
Wowiezowie! Thanks a lot, since I just learned I needed those tools, haha. So I can hopefully get the last laugh after all.
Any idea how to get the CDs out of a 2005 Ford escape 6 CD player
Good evening, I think ask this before, can you do a Video on how to fix a 2012 Ford F-150 4x4 XLT 5.0L the Radio quite work I checked all the Fuses and it still won’t Power up, the Clock is the only thing Blinking. Thank You.
How do you get a touch screen aftermarket stereo out? Obviously it doesn't have the holes for tools like the oem did, so then what?
I have a 2011 Ford transit van with the stock radio. I bought the keys to take it out but it seems the tabs that need to click into the keys are mangeld beyond belief. What can I do to get the radio out without destroying the dash?
Nice video bro🔥🔥🔥💯
You just blew my mind.
thanks for showing the old factory wire harness plug???
Happens to have a couple fence ties they should work mint thanks for the video
Thanks mate, your idea worked fine
How about removing an aftermarket (Dual Electronics) car stereo from a Ford Focus?
I cant seem to find info on doing that.
Dont feel bad I need to do a lot more on the inside than my stereo, cant find info on changing the car light switch out on a 1998 Ford Explorer.
I know this is regarding a stereo, but I have a question about a DVD player in my 02 Excursion. Genius brotha!! Thanks!!
Wow. You.. Are.. Amazing ,where did you get the coat hanger?
What if it doesn't have the little holes on the sides like yours does? Then what do i do?
thanks for the tip. worked, just that easy
I know you posted this a while ago, I'm just wondering would this still work if one clip hole was blocked(past attempt)???
So when I want to use an aftermarket what do i need to do to install it?
Thank you very much for this video.
I may have to use this tomorrow and then I will know if that works.
Again, thank you.
Also worked for my john Deere 6125r radio!
I have been told to disconnect the battery to remove the radio...is this absolutely necessary?
can u put a 2din radio with screen on a ford escort?
Tried everything, mine won't come out. Think someone may have busted the clips. Any thoughts?
The clips are likely cracked off on one side you will have to access it from the backside
+FordTechMakuloco how do i remove it from the back side
FordTechMakuloco I'm also having the same problem, the right side clips go in with no resistance. how can I get it from the other side??
turns out brute force and elbow grease works wonders
.... iff you dont care about the old radio
am i the only one who had terrible luck with this? I couldn't tell what was going on until it ripped out the entire dash with radio still attached. So I look behind and i ended up just prying it out. I used nails and a coat hanger and neither worked to unclip the radio from the dash. Oh well.
I will try this. Thank you. Very helpful. I was thinking that this would work.
tried it with coat hangers and did not work. Bought SPECIAL TOOL, still not working. If the bracket is broken, what do you suggest?
Are you sticking them full in then backing out just a bit? If the brackets are indeed broken you will need to push them in manually from the backside what vehicle you working on exactly?
FordTechMakuloco 2003 Ford Windstar
maawl I would follow what I do in this video NO HEAT: Ford Windstar Blend Door Actuator Removal
and remove that lower storage bin and you are going to have to look up in there and manually push the tangs back
Hey dude can you give a copy of digram of that stereo thanks for the response
Very nice. I'm going to try that. I need to access my blend door actuator.
Can use nails too. Didn't have proper Guage wire or coat hanging
Used stakes that you use to put down weed liner
Thanks for posting.
u used welding rods with the coating removed.
i tried that today with the older metal hangers an it didnt work no matter what i did on my 99 Expedition :( lcd screen does show nothing :(
What is wrong with me? I've just come inside after working for a half hour on this.
Could it be that the truck is 20 years old and the snaps are very stiff?
My coat hangers bend and bend, I pull and pull, but the radio laughs at us.
Steve K Sometimes the clips get stuck in there.
Steve K Just to followup, I bought a set of the real tools, just a few dollars, and the radio came right out. I think it was the coat hanger metal not being stiff enough.
how do you get the radio disconnected?
Well played, thank you for the tip!
Thank you!
You the man!
One side of my radio won’t come out. Any idea?
good job.. but yes, needs to be "thick" metal
I am here from the future to say, I can't find a single metal coat hanger anywhere. Good idea tho.
Anyone here know why my radio light is extremely dim? Maybe a possible fix?
Nice video. 👍👍
Good job bro thanks 🤙
Awesome idea! I love it
Thank you for the info!
WallMart was out of stock. I thought this might be a solution and it turns out I'm not the only genius driving an old ass Ford.
Great video. Thank you!
thanx....still works :D
