    The 1938 stock fits so seemingly well in a modern version of the tube network. They are beautiful.

    I worked for LTPB between 1965 to 1974 in the building section based at Junction Road. The two main lines I worked on were the Edgware and High Barnet. When the trains would pull in we would speak to the guards to keep the doors open longer so we could get building materials in to take from one station to the other. One day we tripped getting into a coach and we dropped these bags of cement and they burst, the passengers got covered in cement. We also had a black gang, that repaired the bitumen on the platforms, we used to push the hand rollers into the coaches to take to another station, this particular day we pushed it in and it went through the floor of the coach, needless to say we were not the flavour of the month. Being a carpenter I did a lot of restoration work for LT, the biggest one was when the fire went through Totteridge station. I have lots of different stories I could tell. I still say working for LTBP was the best job I ever had. John.

    Arguably the finest design of underground train ever produced for London Transport. I love the the warm, cosy interiors and the seating layout. The sound of the compressors also brings back memories.

    I was a Guard on the Piccadilly line around 1970,there were a few of these back then on the Picc Line,I also drove them several times,good to see them again! (The lighting then was with small bulbs installed so it was pretty dim inside the carriages.)

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember seeing these on the Piccadilly line. Mostly they were on the Northern and Bakerloo.
      The lights would dim slightly when the train accelerated - especially when leaving stations.
      Thankfully we still have one of these trains, in the heritage fleet.

    • @sunrise1485
      @sunrise1485 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CitytransportInfoplus Yes you're right about the lights dimming,also they were slightly faster than the later stock,noticeable on the long stretch between Hammersmith and Acton town.
      There were also a couple of 1962 stock trains on the picc line at that time,with one having experimental electric doors which could not be held open,as a guard we had to be extra careful on those!

      I qualified as a motorman, also on the Piccadilly Line, in the mid-70s after a 3 year apprenticeship & 6 month stint as a guard. I fondly remember driving these great trains as well as having driven 1956/59/62 & 73 stocks. I still have the guard's key & motorman's control & reverser keys as momentos of those days. Would love to have a go of the preserved train though! One can dream, eh!

      Do you know how many were on the Piccadilly Line? I never saw or rode on any in service, but I know they were there....I remember seeing one in one of the bays at Northfields Depot whilst passing through in 1975, this was whilst the first 1973 Stock units were on test, so that '38 example couldn't have been on the line for much longer....

    Very early, one Sunday morning in the summer of 1991, I rode one of these trains south from Golders Green. Though I'm Canadian, and was just visiting England for the summer, I was already enough of a transit geek that I recognized that this was a special historical train, so I *had to* ride it.

    Oh how i loved these trains on the Bakerloo line! I used to travel in the 1970s. The light was dimmer and cosy. Mind you if you wore high heels in the rush hour and held the ceiling strap, if there was a curve in the tunnel you nearly ended up on the knee of the person sitting in front of you! But they smelt great and made a proper clanking ‘tube’ noise. So glad they’ve preserved one

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I often wonder how long present-day trains will last. Especially with respect of electric control gear where the technology is always advancing. Already we've seen trains withdrawn because despite being a decade or so 'old' the electrics were so obsolete that spare parts were unobtainable. (Birmingham Airport Maglev train)

      Perhaps, at present though these are needing major rebuilds (because of rust) just to keep them going. It might be better for the Isle of Wight to get some extra trains tagged on to the next batch of tube trains.

    Drove these trains on the Northern Line in 1969. Based at Golders Green. Although there were plenty of speed limits these trains had no speedometers then. They kept breaking down and kicked up a lot of dust from the brake pads. So glad when I was moved to the Central Line with more modern trains. The worst trains I remembered was the Q Stock on the District Line.

    When these tube trains were in service, during the sixties and seventies, they were much neglected and often dirty. Some were cleaned before being withdrawn, after there was an increase in funding. So nice see one in a condition close, to what have been like when new. These trains are art deco style for an art deco tube system. ❤️

      It got brand new trains with the Watford Joint Stock, but they only lasted a decade or so as the Standard stock was faster. • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 70's were interesting on the Northern Line. They kept the best condition 1938 Stock, and introduced the two fleets of 1972 Stock, Mk2 with red painted doors, Mk1 unpainted, so it was anyone's guess what type of train was going to turn up!! Eventually the 1938 Stock gave way to 1959 Stock off the Piccadilly, which also displaced the 1972 Mk2 Stock to the Jubilee Line via the Bakerloo. The Northern was, eventually the last line to operate 1938 Stock, as after the last Bakerloo example had been withdrawn, five trains were reinstated on the Northern Line in the peaks, until 1989.

    I couldn't help but think of some preserved pre-war IND subway cars here in New York...and then I looked and found that they're from the same era.
    Only some of those old IND cars are actually owned by the New York Transit Museum, but through certain deals, there are enough to operate a single 8-car train for a special weekend service toward the end of the year. This particular service is open to the public (just pay the fare as if you were using any other route), unlike most excursions.

      I feel very strongly that not completing the electrification works was a very big mistake, although perhaps instead of doubling the Finchley Central - Edgware line passing loops at both Mill Hill stations might have sufficed. I can understand why the extension from Edgware was abandoned, although so much was already built... Apparently some people (children, I think) drowned whilst playing in the abandoned extension tunnels in the Elstree area. This was only 'made safe' when the M1 motorway was built.

    6:50 The 1938s had lost their fluted Art-Deco glass lampshades well before then, in the 1960s - though they were still to be seen in some sub-surface 'Q' stock cars after that.

    • @marknpm

      They were a bit like the IND museum train sonicboy678 mentions - all sorts of oddments coupled together, clerestory-roofed 1920s cars contrasting with streamlined ex-1930s stock - those were the ones with the Art-Deco lampshades. My favourite Q stock carriage was a 1923 driving-motor with a completely flat front that made it resemble a goods-van (the clerestory didn't curve down at the ends), very high-backed transverse seats, old-fashioned bell-shaped lampshades, brass-scrollwork ventilators and some quite elaborate wood panelling. I don't think the drivers and guards liked it much, though: there was a wooden destination-board instead of a roller-blind, the driving-cab was very narrow, and the guard was hidden away in an equally cramped cubby-hole with non air-operated doors; I remember it always used to start with a huge lurch, even compared with the almost equally ancient driving-motor at the other end of the train.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      thats the compressor - the doors were air powered (and so were the brakes) and that sound is the machine which creates the compressed air that these need - to those of us who actually travelled on these trains hearing that sound (plus the starting and ending sounds) adds authenticity.
      Some trains still have these, so its still possible to hear this sound today (2020) eg: Class 315 trains, 1972 tube stock, Class 455 - all of these trains are used in various parts of London

    • @CitytransportInfoplus

      It had to be steel, as the first aluminium trains were built after WW2
      The first use of aluminium was in some of the post-war R stock, although most of the fleet were 1938 Q stock cars which were converted after the war. The first aluminium tube trains (similar in size to the 1938 stock) were the experimental 1956 tube trains.
