My horn doesn’t work , my Trip a button to change my distance to empty and my transmission or sensor as you said is starting to slip. Hyundai mechanics are even more horrible
you all probably dont give a damn but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the account password. I love any help you can give me!
I have a 2011 sonata that shakes when the car gets to 50mph , but once it gets to 65mph it stops. Also, it doesn’t shake when going slower.. Do you have any other idea what it could be ?
Proud 11 year owner of my 13’ Sonata. I love this car! Running smooth and strong at 220,000 miles. No issues with engine or transmission. Only 3 issues I’ve had to resolve over the past 11 years.. motor mount, steering wheel coupler and alternator these issues were resolved 2 years ago at 200k no issues since🙏
As a Hyundai technician, I can tell you engine rod bearing failure is BY FAR the biggest issue with this car. Probably followed by clock spring failures, & tail light wire harnesses melting. Other than that these other issues are few and far between.
I have a 2012 and I first experienced my back taillights going out. Then one day I was in the freeway and I was going 70 mph. All of a sudden my car dropped down to 50mph in the fast lane. I quickly got over to the right lane and my car speed up to 70mph without me being on the gas peddle. I was scared and luckily my job was right around the corner. I had to have my car towed home. Hyundai will never have to worry about me being a customer ever again.
I guess I got lucky because I bought a 2013 sonata when it had 30000 miles on it and just traded it in for at 108000 miles for a 2021 sonata and for those 78000 mile the biggest problem I had was replacing the alternator. Sonata is a very well made car in my opinion. I recommend it to anyone
I bought a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. I was also one of the millions of owners that experienced engine failure due to the rod bearings being thrown and seizing the engine. Without going through the 4yr. nightmare, let's just say I would never, ever own another Hyundai/Kia vehicle again. I'm still fighting it out with them to reimburse me for the $10,000+ I had to shell out for an engine replacement that took them a 1yr 1/2 to get in. And, on top of that I found out I didn't get a new engine, they simply repaired the part of the engine affected (I'm no mechanic, but have been told by those in the know that I could have gotten a new create motor). Hyundai lost a class action lawsuit in 2016 that affected over 2 million cars, and my VIN finally was added to the vehicles two months ago. All this to say, why didn't that problem make to your top 5 problems with the Sonata Sedan's Hybrid or not?
I fought 6 years to have my engine replaced only for them to recall the motor. Of course there is no resolution to that problem and the class action lawsuits are a joke and I've never participated in them as far as I'm concerned the only way to resolve the matter is to provide us with a working vehicle period!
I have a 2014 Sonata…two bad driver side seat switches, one steering box star grommet, which I replaced for $7…and one engine replacement due to a seized crank…covered under warranty/factory recall at no cost. 140K miles and I’ll also be replacing at least one of the front axles…bad CVS joint. I’ll do it myself so price wise, not too bad. I’m also on my second set of brakes/rotors all around. We purchased our Sonata in 2013, so it’ll be on the road 9 years this November. All in all, not bad maintenance wise. If you drive your car….parts will wear out…don’t expect it to be maintenance free over it’s lifetime.
I have a 2011 Sonata GLS, currently with 198k miles on the dash. Only major problems- got an engine replacement by Hyundai under the recall at 141k miles when the original one locked up. Then had a transmission slipping at 160k(got it rebuilt). Mine was a used 3 owner car and had not been taken care of before I bought it. It’s been a solid vehicle and comparable to a typical Accord/Camry of the time. I’d recommend one despite of how people are trash talking Hyundai/KIA brand which has come a long way especially since 2011’s redesign. I’ve been to 6 different states on road trips without a single problem and my Sonata had 106k miles when I bought it so I’ve put almost 100k on it already since 2015.
Mine has been a totally solid workhorse too. I think mine and yours are a rarity because I hear so many issues. Replacing the fuel pump assy at 180 miles (long overdue) but everything else is fine. My steering wheel controls for the radio don't work anymore and I sometimes have to cancel the cruise before the set button will engage, but mechanically the car is sound. However I can't bring myself to trust Hyundai/Kia again for my next car, with all the recalls across their brand. Engine fires, etc. Don't have much faith in their build quality overall. Looking at Toyota or Honda for my next vehicle! I did get a new engine under warranty at 112k miles though and my Sonata has really been out through the wringer. Hopefully it's a long way off, but I am concerned that there's not much life beyond 200,000 miles.
I had none of those problems with my 2011 Sonata w/ 168000 miles. I did however replace 5 neutral safety sensors, rubber steering wheel gasket and one starter. The starter had a plastic part that should have been metal and it just snapped over time. I love this car, I hope hyundai tries to improve instead of profit, profit, profit like American card do.
Wow 5 neutral safety switches, what symptoms did you experience my car is giving me the p0705 code now and won't shift out of park without pressing the safety release button 🙄
I have a 2018 Sonata with 50,000 miles so far. Bought new. So far excellent vehicle. No problems, only regular maintenance. Hope it continues like this.
I have a 2006 and 2012 sonata and I will never buy a sonata again. Hopefully your year doesn't end up becoming one of the previous with engine failures like 2011-2017
Are you even talking about the 2011-14 YF? -Engine crank bearing failure -Steering Coupler failure -AC Compressor premature wear -Lighting short bulb life issues -Airbag Clockspring These would have been my Top 5 for this
I've experienced pretty much all of these since owning my 2011 for 5 years. All except the bearing failure. Hyundai says my theta wasn't affected by the alabama plant issues but its burning oil and might go anyway.
I have a 2011 Sonata GLS with 138K on it and the only issues i've had are the rubber steering couple in the steering column disintegrating and having a knocking in the wheel. Also had to get the engine replaced under Hyundai's recall. Never heard of the issues mentioned here.
Brake pedal stopper!! I didn’t even realize my brake lights were starting to stay on till saw it with my own eyes, but noticed the hesitation on acceleration, would just drop to like idle at full throttle no check engine lights… was that black plastic plug on brake pedal had worn a little hole allowing to switch to extend out, fixed it back to normal 5 mins flat, pack of them for 5 bucks… 😎👍🏻
I would stay away from 11+12s lots of problems 2.4 engines may be a safer buy an if your tail lights keep going out switch to led bulbs . Always super lube the engine with a dura lube or motor kote for protection an less wear on the dryer parts of the engine. Motor kote can also go in transmission and power steering fluid it’s a great product keep you on the road with cooler operating which is less resistance on your cars day to day operations. Also go with a premium battery for less electrical issues.Hope this helps someone.
I had a 2011 I drove to 150k+ miles and never had any notable problems. I traded it for a 2014 Sonata that I STILL drive with 260k+ miles on it. And it wasn’t until the past 5-10k miles that I experienced anything notable on it. I had to replace the neutral safety switch, and as of about 250k miles, it has been going through oil pretty quickly (and no, not due to a leak). Basically, the cars have been VERY good for my traveling job, and I definitely got my money’s worth out of them.
I bought a 27K used 2012 Sonata at a dealership with lifetime 3K oil change N/C in 2017. Now, June 2023 at 110K, no problems as I crisscrossed the USA in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021-23 in Phoenix. It likes the heat, ha, ha!
I've been a hyundai/kia tech for 8 years and I can honestly say the 2.4l engine does not have an egr system... My top 5 would be 5. steering coupler 4. Clock spring 3. Transmission temperature sensor and harness 2. Fuel pump locking ring rusting out causing the pump to crack leading to evap leaks 1. Rod bearings/engine seized
Hi. Thanks for the info. Being that you're a tech I was wondering if you can help me out please. My daughter was gifted a 2012 elentra, very low miles. Only been driving it for a week and the climate buttons, back up camera, sunroof & windshield wipers are not working 😕. The dealer is charging too much just to look at it so I took it to another mechanic that wants $2900 to replace the ecm, power control module and wiring shaft harness. Do you think there could be an easier fix?? Any help is greatly appreciated.
@@foredimples529 I would say to check the basic stuff like fuses for the sunroof and wipers. But back up cameras are pretty common to get corroded and fail. Hard to say for sure without actually looking at the car
Hey Jason, thanks for the head's up. I am currently looking ata 2015 Sonata Hybrid and am concerned with rod bearing issue, The vehicle I am looking at has 103k on it. I read elsewhere that using Motor Kote is recommended, What's your view on this? Do you think that at 103k it's too late to use? Also, do you find less issues with the hybrid vs vehicles from Alabama? Thanks in advance,
Hey I have a sonata and recently I couldn’t bring my key all the way out and the shifter would either lock or now it just slides up and down easily through park to drive. Now my car battery dies because something won’t turn off and my key is stuck unless the battery dies then it’s free. Any chance you know my car problem?
Thanks a lot for posting this video. My speakers stopped working and after watching 4 videos without luck I came across your video and got my speakers working again!
I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonota. Bought it 6 months ago with no problems until the month of December. My engine just died today... Had little rattling for 3 weeks and immediately went to mechanic. Today, it was engine bearing and need a new engine. No dash lights were on the entire duration I had my car.
Hey, I’m thinking of getting one on Wednesday but now I’m kinda baffled 😮 review not so great & engine is the most main important part & I just had to junk my 2dr Honda coup 🙁💭😬
2014 Hyundai Sonata. I bought the extended warranty in 2019 and I was glad I did. The CV Joint went bad and the AC compressor died. Those combined would have cost around $6k+ at the dealership. I paid $2k to the extended warranty company. Unfortunately my driver side and rear passenger side lock has gone out and now the damn turn signal rod is going out and causing my lights to flicker. First Hyundai I've ever owned, and probably my last.
I bought a very clean 2013 Sonata SE about 1 year ago. It had 75,000 miles on it. It now has 83,000. Bulbs in lights constantly go out. Front axels started making noise when turning, so i have to replace them. Stereo just recently went haywire and randomly goes from radio to gps map and it wont even turn off. Every time i turn around, something new is going wrong on that car. Maybe its freaky bad luck, but based on my experience, I'll never own another Hyundai period.
I've had mine almost 6 years and it started doing that about 2 years ago. I ordered new taillights online line. I haven't had a problem since. My husband and I installed them.
Just had to get the entire housing assembly for my front headlight and taillights. My bulbs kept going out all the time also. Then had to get the left and right axles fixed.
My back taillights went out 2 times before I just ended up buying aftermarket ones for around $200 and installed them myself. I took it to Hyundai here and they said it was gonna cost me $2000
sheesh i was starting to think i had a wiring problem of some sort. didn’t know the tail lights always had issues. i JUST bought new bulbs that worked fine until a couple days later now i need 1 of the same ones and a smaller one.
Only problem we had with ours when we owned it was tail light bulbs always burning out. I carried extra bulbs because I replaced one every month. I notice so many of them on the road with a bulb blown.
Had the same issue. Found some TH-cam vids about it that suggested swapping out for some LED lights. I found some on amazon, swapped them out and haven’t had a problem since; it’s been over a year now.
I agree 100%. This is definitely by far my #1 issue. I finally replaced the entire rear light string of lights which finally resolved the issue. Hyundai should have recalled this.
Had a 2011 2.4 Limited. Emphasis on HAD. Worst car I ever owned. In the year that I owned it. I had it from 75K miles to 98K. Car kept going into limp mode. I had 4 Engine Knock Sensor Wiring Harnesses, 3 Engine Knock Sensors. 3 Main Engine Wiring Harnesses and a whole BRAND NEW engine put into it. Starter also went bad but that isn’t the main issue. I did not pay a dime for the engine issues. But it was never resolved. Do not regret getting rid of that thing, was not worth the constant headache of it
Mine. I changed it myself it was only $4. But beware you will need another person to help once the steering wheel is dropped and video yourself taking pieces off
I was thinking of buying a 2014 Sonata, but after listening to all these stories and this video, hard pass. Thank you all for your troubling information about this car.
I had a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. I've been having a problem with the car struggling to start up. I took it to multiple auto repair shops to figure out the issue, but it wasn't clear. The day before, I was going to take it to a Hyundai dealership to get it checked, but the engine malfunctioned on the start up and soon enough bursted into flames. My sonata is now completely destroyed and currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Also be wary of starter lever problems. Because the car won’t start, you’ll think the actual starter has gone bad when really it is a lever inside of the starter. You’ll know it’s the lever when you try to start to car but all you hear is a whining noise. It’s the starter spinning but the lever hasn’t pushed out the gear to actually engage. DO NOT let Hyundai repair this as they will try to charge you around $800. It really only requires a $7 part and a couple hours labor.
One of two of the only issues I've had on this car was starter and it was 7 bucks and my time. Up over 150k on the car. Today was my second issue with key not being released which was 10 mins of my time for the fix. I always see so many people posting issues with these cars, I feel bad for everyone else. I must have got super lucky.
I found a mechanic who was willing to take the starter apart and fix it. $167 The part should be made of metal instead of plastic. :( I'm up to 168,000 miles and praying :)
Limited to Hyundai Sonata manufactured in Alabama on 2011 and 2012: Braking switch stopper. Just experienced it. The stopper erodes away quickly and once that happens, the brake lights don't turn off, ESC light lights up, and occasionally the accelerator doesn't respond. This apparently is under recall #136. Found out about it the hard way (multiple close calls while merging into the freeway and a drained battery in the morning). Shame on you Hyundai for not notifying me about this recall. You are looking at a very disappointed loyal customer.
That literally happened to me last month. Super glue, and two pennies wrapped in duct tape where the stopper is supposed to go helped me get back on the road.
Yep, had the steering column grommet issue and brake switch pad issue. Pad was covered under warranty as was my engine failure at 63,000. And I have issues with brake lightbulbs failing unusually often. I also had both license plate bulbs burn out. If this happens to you…take a piece of electrical tape and wrap on end around the bulb and pull it out….they can be slippery and they just plug in on 2014 Sonatas. Works like a champ.
My 2014 (96K miles) recently started smelling like burnt oil. Found the exhaust manifold pretty well soaked in oil. Been regularly checking oil level and occasionally topping off. Guess I'm going to have to get some seals replaced. Also recently began growling/rattling around 1000-1500 rpm when in gear. Noise isn't present when in park, not in gear. Above that rpm, no noticeable noise. Not sure what that's about. Unrelated to the noise and oil, I just replaced driver's side cv axle, as the seal broke and flung grease all over the back of the driver side front wheel.
Hello so you don't recommend the Hyundai sonata cars ? I was thinking about buying a sonata but if Is going to give me a lot of problems I won't buy even tough I like it
@@fherny77 ill be honest the sonata 2011 is the worse year ever based on reviews.. but I have the luxury model and everything about the interior I love. Never have I ever heard a sound system so good. And everything feels amazing inside. But!!!!!! So many issues with gas pump/ suspension/ breaklights/ electrical sensors/ right now radiators... 3 of my friends have the same car and we all have same issues. We all at 99k-120miles. I test drove sonata 2020 and that model year is amazing looking. Im still considering getting one. But so far, those cars have rust underneath the car. Also, my car has many things under warranty and hyundai doesn't want to honor many of them. If they are promising 10 years of warranty on their 2020 cars .. question is.. will they honor it?
Omg i was so sick and tired of replacing bulbs every 2 weeks it was annoying....and then they literally have no warnings inside on the dash to warn you like other car models do like a fast blinking light or something....what finally solved my break light issue was full L.E.D bulbs, I put them in over a year ago now and they have not gone out yet....its funny seeing sonatas driving around with no brake lights whatsoever and the driver is clueless to it. Every time I see one I try to let them know cuz I had no clue until I got pulled over
@@fherny77 I've literally had no problems with mine, only now that it has 110k miles on it, am I having general maintenance related issues, but the whole 6 years I've owned it, she's been a champ and they are some fast cars boy they get up. I guess its a roll of the dice cuz some are horrible and others have no problems at all, im happy with mine and she's gorgeous!!!!
@@jamesabarela i so feel you dude. I started with drivers honking at me and getting pissed of an giving them the finger lol, little did I know all my back lights were gone.
I own a 2013 and yes sometimes when I start my car my radio goes out and back on my back lights melted my fixtures had to replace 🤦🏿♀️I had a brand new high pressure fuel pump put on a few months ago and now I seem to have some trouble with it again smh other than that she's a good car been having her over 3 years
I have a 2013 Sonata and have had none of these issues. My biggest persistent issue is lights constantly going out, as well as the taillight harness burning out.
I bought my 2013 Hyundai sonata back in 2016 with 96k miles now im on 220k miles never had any of this problems described but i had other issue like brake light bulbs burning transmission issue car burns oil
Bought 2013 Sonata last Wed had inky 22,435 miles in it.. I drove it iver xmas weekend 320miles and heard what sounded like bad wheel bearings on my passenger side. Monday after cmas, and my car is still with the Toyota dealership since 74am.. they tell me its just a tire, but they giving me 2 new tires and a wheel alignment. Oh I've been driving a rental 2023 camry since Monday 1230pm... they wouldn't have done all this for a tire..
I own a 2011 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4L. I have not had any of these issues. I have had issues with the axles, ac compressor and steering coupler. I've had the engine replaced twice.
I suggest everyone with a 2011-2014 Sonata replace all of their non-LED red tail lamps immediately with LED regardless of whether or not they are burnt out before it melts the light assembly. The only exception is the middle high mount which is LED from the factory. The rear turn signal and backup lamps can remain non LED as they are not affected by this issue.
I would definitely add in the HORRENDOUS record these cars have with catastrophic engine failure, I was driving my gf’s last nite an it just locked up solid, dealers are PACKED with these cars waiting on engines an Hyundai is all shoulders.......
The same thing happened to my 2012 Sonata. I’m now in the class action suit which is supposed to be settled by April of 2021...I’ve had to spend thousands to get my car fixed they better give me something!
@@ContactResearch You shouldn’t have had to pay a dime. Hyundai backed up my engine. They had to do some tests but after that they ordered a new engine
Yup, happened to me. Had it towed to the the dealer. A week later I had a new long block replacement. Easy peasy. They know they messed up on the engine. No questions asked.
Just had the engine replaced on '11 sonata bc of the knock sensor. Got it back and it squeal when you start the car in the morning. Said the pulleys need replacing. Had no squealing b4 the engine was replaced 😏
I liked the video. I have a 2013 limited edition 4 cylinder. You need to add one more item. The steering wheel coupling. I changed it took about 1.5 hrs but worth it.
@@justinnegron4843 did they ask you for maintenance records? How long did it take? They sent my warranty claim to Hyundai corp and now my dealer says the corp systems are down and I'm waiting to hear back if they'll approve my engine replacement or not.
I Had the Main Computer Go Out at 58,600 miles ! My Car is a “2014 Sonata Hybrid Limited”, There have been 6 Recalls already, but This Model year is Beyond & Better than the Years Prior for Engine Failures…I Have 84,600 miles now & “Crossing my fingers”…lol👍😎🥺
Alot of drivability issues can be resolved or prevented by using top tier gas that has additional cleaning additives to gas....also the valves can get carbon buildup on them and need to be cleaned regularly on GDI engines.... recommended cleaning every 15k miles...Also úse Pennzoil ultra platinum or platinum oil and change ever 5k miles
None of these are serious issues with the '11-'14 Sonata, if you follow their forum. Connecting rod failures, steering coupler, rear calipers seizing, oil burning...the tail lights would burn-out due to a too high wattage bulb. (heating and distorting the contacts and burning plastic) Also, you mention a V6 and there is none available since '10 I believe.
I have a 2009 Hyundai sonata 2.4 cylinder and I replaced the alternator. Fairly easy job. But after I replaced it I started the car up and went for a ride. Everything seemed fine until I came to a stop sign and as soon as I pressed on the brake the car stalled. Not only does it do that but when the engine is cold the idle looks good but as soon as it warms up the idle drops down to a low 400 to 500 rpm and if I rev it up it will stall when idle comes back down. I had none of these problems before replacing the alternator. I did not touch any vacume lines while replacing the alternator. I'm totally baffled. Before I start replacing things I figured I would try and get some help first. Also I get no codes.
I own 2011 se model 2.4l 170,000 MI...... Had 100,000 on when I bought it and replaced way too many parts. The engine under warranty. ...cracked leaking torque converter had to get transmission replaced they don't sell the torque converter alone. Axles.. suspension components.... went into limp mode towed to the dealer fix for free was a bad sensor. I love this car but wouldn't recommend it or buy another. Although my Hyundai dealership is superior with service and only charge $2,200 with install of remanufactured transmission. I replaced twice as many parts on this car than I did on my '05 Altima with 300,000 MI
They didn’t mention that these have horrible engine problems and they blow up with low miles. I work at a Hyundai dealer and this year sonata is one of the worst ones for engine failure
Bro corporate won't honor the recall. My car burns 2qts and was approved for an engine thru the consumption test. Now they want me to 'participate' and pay for a combustion cleaning. This will only prolong and kcik the can down the road from engine failure. My case manager is impossible to talk to
Thanks to this video finally found the rattle noise reason from cold start in my car. How can I fix this? How much will it cost fixing myself vs taking help from a professional?
+Debapriya Bhattacharjee Thanks for watching! If you are experiencing that issue then the tensioner will have to be replaced. We are not able to provide you with an estimated cost of this repair, as it will vary from shop to shop.
I had a 12 pack o bottled beer in my rear drivers side back seat, On the floor, Every time I hit a pothole or R/R crossing a rattle would happen,. Looked at rear shocks and muffler under car ....WAS THE 12 PACK OF BOTTLES RATTELING . I found it and saved 50000$. I LMFAO.
I have a 2011 sonata with a engine replaced under recall. 140,000 miles and no problems. I change oil every 3k miles. But bulbs do burn out constantly.
Hi, has anyone noticed that the RPMs rev up when coasting? It doesn’t happen all the time, just occasionally while traveling down the interstate. Thank you in advance!! :)
I’ve never experienced that, however 2 years ago my engine blew up going down the road. Came to a rolling stop with no power, thankfully! Another thing my headlights go out at a abnormal rate as well as my brake pads. How about you anything minor but annoying?
2011 plan Jane Sonata 6 speed manual my issue with the clutch. At first I thought that the master cylinder went bad. Replaced it bleed the system no problem for a while. For whatever reason it loses pedal pressure no leaks of oil anywhere. Never need to add oil in the reservoir go through the process of bleeding the system again pedal pressure stays for a while and then loses it again without losing an ounce of oil in the system. My question is is there something that would create a vacuum to suck air into the hydraulic system? If so what could it be.
I had none of these problems with my 2011 2.0 turbo limited, but DID have the engine replaced (under recall, metal shavings), the turbo wastegate needing adjustment frequently, and the fuel gauge sensor not working (haven't fixed that yet, because it's apparently an $1,100 fix).
Wow I'm glad this video came up I was considering buying one of these models ..honestly with the exception of the speakers those seem like pretty serious problems to have especially if you are not mechanically inclined. Thanks for the info!
I just purchased a 2014 Sonata Limited with 110k. On the way home i passed a car and it started misfiring. When i would first start it for the day...after 30 seconds, white smoke would be pouring out of the exhaust. A week later it's in the shop where I purchased it. They sent it to a bigger dealership so they could check the engine out. Before they could even start looking into the engine, they wanted $700 to clean the combustion chamber and new spark plugs. I put $3k down on it and i'm broke AF! Also the right rear tail lights are flickering! So yeah...
Have owned my 2013 Sonata since new and have never had any problems whatsoever with it. Only replaced normal wear item such as tires, battery, bulbs etc. People just love to complain
2012 Hyundai Sonata constantly burning out front & back bulbs. Changed 8 bulbs in 1 year. Had to buy 2 new 4 bulb rear light holder & wiring because sockets were all burned or melted. $130 parts & $150 for repairs & installation. Not counting cost of 8 bulbs I already replaced. Its been a nightmare. Trading car in. Won't buy another Hyundai. Please post video to show how to replace the entire 4 bulb wiring in rear of 2012 Sonata.
Bought my 2011 Sonata full load (nav, push button start, etc) in June 2010. Transmission replaced after 130k; warranty. Power steering rack replaced after 130k; warranty. GDI Engine replaced after 165k; warranty. Fuel pump relay after 96k. Outer tie rods and front axles after 122k; $2,700. Replaced starter after 123k. Replaced front struts after 177k and 191k. Replaced front springs after 177k. Replaced front sub-frame after 205k. Replaced rear shocks after 210k. Replaced both front lower control arms after 220k. Currently 223k. 58k on new engine. 4.5k on oil and it looks like sludge. Got receipts to prove maintenance performed regular. Reader's Digest: 2011 Sonata SUCKS big time!
Hello there so I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata limited edition the radio turns on but no sound I did what u mention and checked all the fuses and still nothing any suggestions on what else to check? Thank you
This is Emmanuel from Ghana, West Africa. I own 2 Sonata, Models 2011/12 Dimensions and 2014. I am really thankful for this video. I could really use some of your help personally for my cars. Please reply.
Didnt cover a single problem i know of after having one of these cars for 10 years. Its been a great car and I will keep it til the wheels fall off. #1 worn steering wheel coupler Symptom: you have a clicking or cogging sensation when you are driving straight and move the wheel just to either side of center. Fix: Its sort of a pain to change by yourself because you have to lift the whole steering column while on your back but its cheap and doable for one guy. #2 Dome light switch failure. Symptom: The dome light switch acts like its in the ON position when set to DOOR. Fix: Design of the switch mechanism is great but the materials dont hold up to heat. Im not sure if the heat comes from current passing or from being in the roof of the car. But you will need to either replace the whole fixture, or disassemble the switch mechanism and reform the plastic. (I was able to use UV resin to repair mine but i dont know how that will hold up over time. If the heat problem is current related you can try replacing the bulbs for some LEDs after you fix the switch.) #3 Premature CV Joint wear Symptom: Clicking are rattling sound when reversing with wheel cut hard. Fix: Replace CV Joints - another one that is doable for a average joe in the driveway but its not fun and will take most of a saturday. (My car had this symptom from about 35-40k miles on. The dealer "couldnt reproduce the problem". I finally did it myself after the warranty expired.) If you are high mileage i suggest you do #5 at the same time. #4 Emergency/Parking Brake worn Symptom: E-brake does not hold car in place Fix: This can be tricky, you can adjust the brake shoes inside the rotor hub using a hook on the tension wheel but if they are worn too much (or in my case the friction material separated from the shoe) the only option is replace them. This is NOT an easy task, lots of disassembly and time involved. (I have not done this though I plan to. I glued the friction material back onto the shoe and threw it back together. 2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited will make a short growling noise and seems to be associated with the A/C not functioning. The A/C will eventually work properly but not sure for how long or if the 2 are connected, the noise and A/C not working correctly. Also seems to maybe be when first started, as after driving a while and began to work, later started and seemed to work fine. Any thoughts?
There was no V6 in this generation Sonata. Only the 2.4 n/a or 2.0 turbo. Steeeing coupler, rod bearing failure, clock spring and tail/brake light sockets should be on this list. On the turbo models, the wastegate actuator fails and also goes out of adjustment often. I own a 2011 2.0t and have done all of these except rod bearings. For some reason my engine didn't qualify for the recall, per my local Hyundai dealer. Still going strong at 113k miles. 🤞
It's on your phone , I had to delete all the b/s contacts that were installed by metro ps such as emails and multiple addresses. had to go 1 by 1 and delete everything but phone numbers. Then, go to pair phone in car with both on bluetooth setting on your car and phone, put your password to car ON YOUR PHONE to get password to receive it. usually 0000 or 1234. when your phone and car connect, you can download contacts and use speakers to speak to connect it. any more problems, pull into a dealer and they should do it for FREE, bring your phone with. good luck, I just did this on mine and if you ask your friends, they can help you. pain in the ass, but all work now...If only my 7 yo grandkid could drive, He;d have it done in a minute. My break light going out every time almost every Hyundai Sonata I see has a break light out but I found a fix everyone just buy the expensive led bulb that cost around 25$ in autozone nd my break lights haven’t burned

Well, my son purchased one for real cheap and maybe you can help. I've done a lot of work on Speedometer problems with the Silverado. But his speed censor was replaced in his car already and his speedometer is still not working. Do you know a fix? Will I have to replace it
Does a 2011 Hyundai Sonata have a clutchless compressor? Compressor runs whether if the AC is on or off. But I don’t get no cold air and the low pressure line doesn’t get cold at all. Any thoughts?
My wife has a 2011 Sonata, 80K miles. The thing is a pc of crap. I would never buy another Hyundai. Never had any of these problems but the problems I've had, Noisy engine (valve train, all Hyundai's) Bad starter, Steering coupler. about 150 recalls (seems like), exhaust replaced, front wheel bearings and axles. front brake calipers, interior light issues, and several other minor issues (sensors, mass airflow, .... Fortunately the car was a gift from the in-laws. Now I know why they gave it to us. It's a lemon. (no, It was never in a flood)
Question I have a 2013 that wasn't apart of engine recall but go figure my 21 yr old managed to blow it. Had rebuilt one put in( hey it was expensive don't judge me 😆). Now burns alot of oil. Can't figure out why. No oil on the ground EVER and no blue smoke from exhaust. Any ideas???? Appreciate your input thanks!!

I noticed ever since I had my shift fixed . my car now at times , while driving the car the D for drive will disappear and I noticed it gets a little hard to accelerate and the only way I can get the car back to normal . I gotta have to pull over and put the car on park which it won’t move . It’s shift gets stuck on park but until I turn the car off and then turn it back on . Then it will drive back to normal and the dashboard goes back to normal . I’ve been trying to figure why it’s doing this

I have a 2011 sonata that shakes when the car gets to 50mph , but once it gets to 65mph it stops. Also, it doesn’t shake when going slower.. Do you have any other idea what it could be ?
Why do most of those Sonata's engines start to knock or lock up even when the engine has the proper amount of oil?
Proud 11 year owner of my 13’ Sonata. I love this car! Running smooth and strong at 220,000 miles. No issues with engine or transmission. Only 3 issues I’ve had to resolve over the past 11 years.. motor mount, steering wheel coupler and alternator these issues were resolved 2 years ago at 200k no issues since🙏
Sir, the #1 problem is the brake lights continuously burning out.
Mine has that too.
Your so right always wen u drive see Hyundia there back lights are always out
As a Hyundai technician, I can tell you engine rod bearing failure is BY FAR the biggest issue with this car. Probably followed by clock spring failures, & tail light wire harnesses melting. Other than that these other issues are few and far between.
+David Pockrass Thanks for the feedback!
Is that the same as the houser unit
Any idea why the door open light shows on the dash when the door is closed and car is In motion?
My problem has been CV Joints. About to replace them a 4th time since I have owned my Sonata in 2013.
@@heatherhackley4276 same here. What gives with the cv joints? I'm going on number 3.
I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with 200,078 and never had major issues with it engine runs really well.
+TS affiliate Thanks for the feedback!
+Isaac 84 Thanks for the feedback!
Junk cars. Terrible dealer support.
+Pfsif Thanks for the feedback!

I dont think people start having problems till they get close or over 100k.
Are you even talking about the 2011-14 YF?
-Engine crank bearing failure
-Steering Coupler failure
-AC Compressor premature wear
-Lighting short bulb life issues
-Airbag Clockspring
These would have been my Top 5 for this
+Matt Villareal Thanks for the feedback!
I've experienced pretty much all of these since owning my 2011 for 5 years. All except the bearing failure. Hyundai says my theta wasn't affected by the alabama plant issues but its burning oil and might go anyway.
Now I don’t know if I should get the car or not 😅
I have a 2011 Sonata GLS with 138K on it and the only issues i've had are the rubber steering couple in the steering column disintegrating and having a knocking in the wheel. Also had to get the engine replaced under Hyundai's recall. Never heard of the issues mentioned here.
I also had both of these problems plus, transmission temperature sensor failure which costed me almost $1k.
Only issues I had were blah blah blah oh "AND THE ENGINE REPLACED". Dude...
@@MattPSU02 .....I had to have my engine replaced on the hybrid. It’s free of charge under their recall.....”dude”
I have a knocking in the wheel too. What did you do to fix it? Get new rubber steering couple?
i had to get my engine replaced too
Brake pedal stopper!!
What problems did you experience resulting in needing the neutral safety switch replaced? Currently getting a p0705 code.
My top 5 would be
5. steering coupler
4. Clock spring
3. Transmission temperature sensor and harness
2. Fuel pump locking ring rusting out causing the pump to crack leading to evap leaks
Thanks in advance,
not to mention there is no v6 version of the engine.. lol
What did they end up doing
i hope you took it to hyundai it will be covered under warranty
Hey, I’m thinking of getting one on Wednesday but now I’m kinda baffled 😮 review not so great & engine is the most main important part & I just had to junk my 2dr Honda coup 🙁💭😬
Lifetime engine warranty
I bought my Hyundai sonata 2009 carry engine 2011 problem of Knocking engine experience twice
I have a 2015 Sonota hybrid and have not had any problems in over 6 years of ownership. 80k miles and still looks and runs like new.
Would you recommend for a new driver? Im looking for a 2015 hybrid myself.
Mines does it to.

My girlfriend's does the same thing. Car has loads of electric issues
I agree too!! Mine burn out all the time!
Do not regret getting rid of that thing, was not worth the constant headache of it
One thing that wasn’t mentioned was the steering wheel coupler who else had that problem ?
I have. It's a $5 part but you have to drop the steering wheel to replace it
Lot's of people, myself included. That was a beach of a project.
Yes. $5.00 part but labor for 2.5 job hurts.
Mine. I changed it myself it was only $4. But beware you will need another person to help once the steering wheel is dropped and video yourself taking pieces off
Me! Smh
I was thinking of buying a 2014 Sonata, but after listening to all these stories and this video, hard pass. Thank you all for your troubling information about this car.
🥺🥺
I had a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. I've been having a problem with the car struggling to start up. I took it to multiple auto repair shops to figure out the issue, but it wasn't clear. The day before, I was going to take it to a Hyundai dealership to get it checked, but the engine malfunctioned on the start up and soon enough bursted into flames. My sonata is now completely destroyed and currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Did you add your story to car complaints?
LMAO
@starwarsagent No he didn't, this is a VERY common problem.
@@nexushexus4365 Exactly. If maintenance was the problem, it wouldn't be as commonplace in the United States and Canada as it has been.
Car just died today, replaced starter last summer assuming that’s why is won’t start up. Thanks for this comment maybe I’ll try to revive it
One of two of the only issues I've had on this car was starter and it was 7 bucks and my time.
@@Pfsif Hyundai puts too much plastic in their cars IMO. Although, to be fair, all automakers probably do at this rate...
I have a 2014 Sonata and I didn't know we had to check oil levels regularly 😟😟😟😟 so I checked it today, and it looks very low. Wow
Dude.. u missed so many issues that overtime I have realized every single person that has one faces... break lights in a major one!!!!!

I just had to replace mine. Horrible rattling noise especially when hitting road bumps.
I’m having shifting issues now, so this is great
I suggest everyone with a 2011-2014 Sonata replace all of their non-LED red tail lamps immediately with LED regardless of whether or not they are burnt out before it melts the light assembly. The only exception is the middle high mount which is LED from the factory. The rear turn signal and backup lamps can remain non LED as they are not affected by this issue.

im pretty sure they stopped putting 2.7 v6s in sonatas after 2005
It's a stupid video guy has no clue what he's talking about
Yea this guy doesn’t seem to be to accurate
Yeah i was thinking the same thing 😭😂
Prior to the sixth generation they had a V-6. He had his years mixed up that’s all
I would definitely add in the HORRENDOUS record these cars have with catastrophic engine failure, I was driving my gf’s last nite an it just locked up solid, dealers are PACKED with these cars waiting on engines an Hyundai is all shoulders.......
Yes I work at Hyundai and you are exactly right, these cars are junk
The same thing happened to my 2012 Sonata. I’m now in the class action suit which is supposed to be settled by April of 2021...I’ve had to spend thousands to get my car fixed they better give me something!
@@ContactResearch You shouldn’t have had to pay a dime. Hyundai backed up my engine. They had to do some tests but after that they ordered a new engine
Yup, happened to me. Had it towed to the the dealer. A week later I had a new long block replacement. Easy peasy. They know they messed up on the engine. No questions asked.
What year and make?
Just had the engine replaced on '11 sonata bc of the knock sensor. Got it back and it squeal when you start the car in the morning. Said the pulleys need replacing. Had no squealing b4 the engine was replaced 😏
I liked the video. I have a 2013 limited edition 4 cylinder. You need to add one more item. The steering wheel coupling. I changed it took about 1.5 hrs but worth it.
i do them in like 15 minutes but ive aldo done a few hundred of them
Hyundai does it for free at dealership
@@guidedbygreen1480 only up to 120,000 miles I believe
Surprised there was nothing about the engine fires and engine destruction on the inside.
Agree with you 100%
My wife's engine took a crash and Hyundai does not do anything about it. 🤬
@@albertdelgado3576 What year was it?
@@albertdelgado3576 why Hyundai don't replace? They replaced my engine at 116k miles and I was like the 5th owner of my 2011 Sonata turbo
@@albertdelgado3576 They replaced my whole engine, scrap metal all inside
(heating and distorting the contacts and burning plastic) Also, you mention a V6 and there is none available since '10 I believe.
where is the forum? thanks..
I heard Nissan Altimas are notorious for transmission failures. I love the cars, but am scared to death to buy one because of that fact.
Did you ever experience your sonata not shifting out of park? Or a p0705 code.
Nice vid you forgot the melting break light on the back it never fails or terrible head light to change
Make sure you do the engine recall for the theta 2! My 2014 engine blew out, thankfully I did everything and had records. They replaced it.
They missed the steering column rubber gear that disintegrates, causing play and noise in steering.
Its a 10$part but 300$ job. I took 3 hours and did it myself.
@@forestchicken3302 fixed???
@@forestchicken3302 what is the part???
The part is $2 and I paid $140 to my local mechanics :). It took him 45 minutes
Yes, they can go at any time. Cheap plastic needs to be upgraded.
My case manager is impossible to talk to
Should look into tail lights blowing bulbs. Directional and headlight control headlights blinking bad connection.
I LMFAO.
Engine is going out soon, prepare for the worst.
I have a 2011 sonata with a engine replaced under recall. 140,000 miles and no problems. I change oil every 3k miles. But bulbs do burn out constantly.
There’s a recall on 2011 engines… my timing chain needs replacing was gonna take to my mechanic but will take to a dealer if so
I want to pay for a 2011 sonata, would you recommend the GDI engine or the DOHC engine in terms of engine resistance.
I owned a 2011 Sonata Limited 2.4 and have not had any issues with what has been mentioned. I'm at over 133k miles with the original engine still
+Edgar Herrera Thanks for the feedback!
when did the trans fluid need changing? did you ever have this done? I'm at 99700 miles. 2012 sonata gls
Same here...176k and no issues and good mileage.
Wow I'm glad this video came up I was considering buying one of these models ..honestly with the exception of the speakers those seem like pretty serious problems to have especially if you are not mechanically inclined. Thanks for the info!

@@1AAuto I'm very disappointed because I was thinking about buying a sonata but if is going to have a lot of problems I will think it over

So yeah...
watching this after I just bought my car yesterday 😞
Hyundai uses a higher wattage bulb...it causes the thin contacts to bend and the plastic to deform. No problems on mine anymore.
It’s a recall
Show recall..it isnt
My wife bought this car five years ago and it's had all these problems and about 25 more
So, you don't recommend it?
You ever experience your wife's car not shift out of park?

Saaa ? I’m about to get one. Guess it’s not worth it ??

Didnt cover a single problem i know of after having one of these cars for 10 years. Its been a great car and I will keep it til the wheels fall off.
#1 worn steering wheel coupler
Symptom: you have a clicking or cogging sensation when you are driving straight and move the wheel just to either side of center.
If the heat problem is current related you can try replacing the bulbs for some LEDs after you fix the switch.)
#3 Premature CV Joint wear
Symptom: Clicking are rattling sound when reversing with wheel cut hard.
#4 Emergency/Parking Brake worn
Symptom: E-brake does not hold car in place
Fix: This can be tricky, you can adjust the brake shoes inside the rotor hub using a hook on the tension wheel but if they are worn too much (or in my case the friction material separated from the shoe) the only option is replace them. This is NOT an easy task, lots of disassembly and time involved. (I have not done this though I plan to. I glued the friction material back onto the shoe and threw it back together. Do this at your own peril with the understanding that it will not stop the vehicle once in motion.)
#5 Ball joints, sway bar links, Tie rod ends
Symptom: You have rattling in the front end when hitting bumps, braking, turning, etc...
Fix: Lift front end of car and inspect the parts mentioned above. If they feel loose or you are able to make them rattle they are bad and need replaced.
These can all be changed in your driveway however if you do the tie rods you will need an alignment afterwards.
how about my 2011 sonata cant go up 60kph? it is map or maf? turbo booster? issue? thanks
I have 0 issues with my sonata ever since I bought it brand new in 2014, I have the 2.0 SE.
Hello there, I’m trying to connect my phone to Bluetooth with Pair Phone and the option “add to” is not available. What can I do?
GOOD LUCK, YOU'LL GET IT EVENTUALLY

I’ve been trying to figure why it’s doing this
Did you ever find a fix? My car is always stuck in park unless I press the shift release button and it accelerates poor
