Ironically I think Tony is best written and most complex in a film that's not even his own: Captain America - Civil War. You can see he's still screwed up from all his past mistakes with Ultron, he's trying desperately to do what's right and keep the team together, even when everyone else is turning against him. Then there's the scene at the end which is so well done. It really breaks his and Caps relationship and takes it in a new direction for the remainder of the series.
I think that's more because of how he basically was the anti thesis to cap. Every character, being a hero or the protagonist, has to have a villain or antagonist. In that particular movie you quoted, Iron man is technically a villain to cpt America and that puts a new perspective to his character. It gives him more depth because now not only do we see Tony stark on one side of the coin and how it has changed, we now see the other side as well and seeing him as a whole. That movie, in itself, created two very different heroes, even if you feel like one camp is right, you could empathize with the other.
That's why he is so relatable. He keeps failing, he makes mistakes in every film and at the same time has to save the day, tutor a surrogate son, keep his relationship with Pepper together and a whole bunch of things. He is never complete, like a real person, he always has something else to take care of and there's just as much of a chance of him making the right choice as of him screwing up and setting the World on fire. You can be rich, famous, smart, powerful and you'll still be vulnerable and prone to mistakes.

Jynn Choo well that doesn’t matter. Everyone else lives in the present anyway 😂. I was explaining what makes Steve and Tony clash, Steve likes how things were, Tony can’t take that cuz he’s a futurist. That’s why they are the perfect combination cuz when they work together they become the perfect weapon for the present but only when they have an understanding of each other. Someone who wants a better future who understands the past would be the perfect hero. That’s what makes Steve and Tony what they are, imperfect and the thing that makes them imperfect is that they don’t have each other’s attributes.

Not to bring up this part of his past, but I'm sure RDJ's struggles with drug addiction played a major part in his ability to understand and portray this character.
I can't remember where it is, but right before Iron Man came out RDJ was doing an interview. He didn't have any idea if the movie would be successful. No body knew if it would be successful. It is possible he hadn't seen the final edit with all the special effects. As he is doing the interview, he has the look of someone who looks like he has done his last movie. He looks like someone whose confidence is gone. He looks like he is ready to do frozen pizza commercials for the rest of his life.
I think only RDJ could play a character who is at the top of world and yet down in the gutter at the same time. Just an incredible performance every time he played the character.

I would say that the overriding theme in the Ironman movies (and Tony's journey in general) is "Legacy". It is somehow always about how he will be remembered. I suspect, he would be happy with the result.

tony’s arc in his trilogy (plus his appearances elsewhere) has saved my life on more than one occasion, i love him so much
I really love how in IM3 they show how he doesn’t NEED the suits.
Also, we’re reminded that he is not immune to PTSD and as someone who has PTSD, it was meaningful to see a superhero overcome that.

Anton A. I believe lots of movies address the topic. But to see my favourite super hero begin to overcome it, it meant more.
Tony Stark as an exploration of trauma is something I've been saying for ages, and I've always seen it glossed over in commentary of the MCU. Trauma and passive suicidality is such a huge part of his character, and it's baffling to see it glossed over so often. I'm so glad to see someone tackle the Iron Man movies from this standpoint, and I'd be interested in a further exploration of how his plays into his character through the entire MCU.

This is great. Iron Man 3 is such a beautiful character peace. It's increasingly frustrating that it's only ever commentary is "wah, not my Mandarin" or "want more explosions".

Great job man! Tony Stark is my all time favorite character in the MCU and I’ll miss him dearly. As someone who’s experienced a fair share of traumatic experiences, his entire story resonates with me so much, especially Iron Man 3.) As much flack as it gets, that film means so much to me.

I also thought a bit of the theme of iron man 2 is depicted in the difference between tony and vanko. Vanko was a genius, but also extremely solitary. He was supposed to represent what tony could become without his friends who he was starting to alienate in the film. Great video as with the cap one.

Thank you so much for making this. This is how I always saw the Iron Man trilogy. I absolutely loved even the 3rd film because of how beautifully Tony's journey was presented. Most people just didn't get that. They looked at it as a superhero movie, for me it was a wonderful story part of Tony Stark's arc.
It's great to see someone talking positively about Iron Man 2! It's not the best MCU movie: it's honestly kinda middling, but that makes it by far the most underrated.
The parts that you questioned are due to the movie's main theme, which ties it more in with the rest of Tony's story. As he says himself: it's about legacy.

His character gives me hope, he has PTSD, anxiety and panic attacks, but he keeps going and tries his best to do the right thing, he's such a big inspiration to me
I have PTSD and anxiety and I love that they show that he's a genius, a great person, and very smart, but he still struggles with all this. To the point where sometimes, most times, he's not working on something just out of passion, but out of need for a distraction, as an outlet for his trauma.

Do you have any recommendations for books or other videos that explore that topic or informed your videos? I'd love to learn more about the push and pull between self-actualization and altruism that both Iron Man and Spider-man attempt to navigate in each of their films. All of your stuff is amazing, btw! Oh wow thank you so much for the high praise! And most of my knowledge and reference comes from my university notes or from academic texts that aren't really written for public consumption. But I highly recommend either just looking up the scholars I reference on Google Scholar like Emily Keightly and Michael Pickering, and read the introduction of the essays that are there because that's what I do nowadays as a fun routine.
Alternatively I highly recommend getting revision guides on school level sociology subjects, the majority of what I know in relations to Identity theory comes from the AQA Communication and Culture revision guide, but that's a UK subjects. Hopefully this has been useful!

I watched all three iron man movies + avengers in two days purely for the ptsd representation. I have ptsd, and I cling to characters who have similar experiences (or difficulties) that I do. Trauma sucks. Trauma doesn’t play fucking fair. RDJ portrays this so well through Tony. I will always be grateful for him.

this is easily the best marvel video essay ive ever seen
I was about 7 when Iron Man came out. It’s been amazing being able to grow up with these characters and watch their stories. As a (almost) 19 year old now, it’s truly amazing being able to go back and see the deeper meanings and themes in these movies.
As a kid I watched it for the action, the romance, the intense/funny/perspective shifting scenes. Now I find myself watching the more quiet/slower scenes with characters interacting to other characters/obstacles. Behind the fantastical superpowers, technology that won’t be used for decades, are characters with real problems. These problems impact the character’s motives and decisions later on in the story/other movies. It’s about people who actively seek change or refuse to change either for themselves or the world around them.
These movies almost make me feel stupid for ever wanting super powers as a kid. The stress, anxiety, betrayal, depression, pain(physical and psychological), and expectations are the most potent things in these stories that the characters struggle with. I truly love these movies and don’t think anything will ever top the “Infinity Saga”

As someone who has really intense C-PTSD I really appreciate Iron Man 3. It’s one of the only things I can point to and say “these are the problems I have, this is what I have to worry about on top of all the trauma.” I make noise when I sleep and I have hurt people I loved thinking they were a threat, I freak out in public and feel like I’m dying because of triggers… it’s a helpful tool to explain what I deal with if someone doesn’t know what PTSD is. It’s a great movie too!

I first got into the Iron Man comic four decades ago so it's been truly remarkable to have witnessed these characters finally make it to the big screen, and their success has been heartwarming. If Iron Man one was the only film in the trilogy (which is an oxymoron, I know), I'd say yes, it is beautiful. Unfortunately, there are still two more rotten eggs in the basket - Iron Man 2 & 3. Those movies have their fans (just like other MCU movies that many consider mediocre have), but I think those movies completely derail the potential that this trilogy could have had. Iron Man 2 was a shallow, badly written two-hour waste of time. You'd think that, with so much story potential, with so many great ideas you can take from the comics (Justin Hammer being the main villain, Tony's struggle with alcoholism), you could make a sequel on the level of Spider-Man 2 and The Dark Knight. But it wasn't. Justin Hammer was reduced to an unrelated, generic, goofy bad guy with unclear motives and a complete lack of threat. The alcoholism aspect could've been taken out and nothing would've changed. It was trivial as trivial can get. Then there is the humor, a problem that many MCU movies will suffer going forward. The plot was a thinly thought-out mess that had comedy and bland CG action scenes, but nothing else. It was an absolutely pointless movie. And then we go to Iron Man 3, which I just found unbearable. The idea that that the main bad guy is some guy mad at Tony for throwing him off at some party years ago is something I would expect to see in a Danny Phantom episode. It's absolutely juvenile writing. And there is the plot, which relies on Tony Stark making dumb decisions in order to move the plot forward. The only reason why the plot moves forward is that Tony Stark goes on the telly and asks the bad guy to shoot his house with missiles. This contradicts his previous statements to Pepper, where he tells her that he's in stress because he fears something might happen to her. So he tells Pepper earlier that he doesn't want anything to happen to her, but then willingly does something that will endanger her and him, and when Pepper asks him to leave the house, he instead convinces her to stay. Did this movie have a script doctor? It should've. And then there is that final battle, which completely contradicts the movie's own theme: can Tony Stark be a hero without the suit? Turns out, he can't, because he required two dozens of them to fight off the bad guys at the end. These movies will always be a waste of potential for me.
i cant stand iron man 3, or even parts of 2, and as a trilogy, i say it gets beat out by captain americas 3 movies. but this made me reconsider and look at them a little differently. i still dont love iron man 3, but you made me appreciate the trilogy overall a little bit more. thanks for that

@@walterdbrown It's not free but I'm sure you can get a cheap version somewhere becuse it's the old version of the programme, but if you have Imovie then you can pretty much edit the same as I do because I don't really do anything extravagant :)
