Dumb question time! I appreciate the veiws from SE, NW, etc but I can't quite understand where the winds are the most violent apart from immediately in the path and behind it. We see destruction adjacent to the paths of tornadoes. For example, if a tornado is traveling west to east, it seems that SE and then SW is more precarious than NE and NW to some degree. Would this be somewhat accurate?
Do you think a watered-down and better optimized version of this sort of software could be used to create a realistic real-time simulation for desktop computers? I'd love to be able to play around with a 3d weather simulation in a sandbox game form. It's honestly my dream game.
@@LeighOrfsThunderstormResearch Honestly, anything that even looks somewhat real would work. A game in which you get to change atmospheric parameters and/or add disturbances in the atmosphere and get to watch it do its thing would be so interesting to me. Maybe someday. I suppose for now I'll just have to stick to watching these videos. They're fascinating.
I'm not a scientist or anything (working for that degree slowly) but these animations make me wonder if the strength of the forward flank winds or the winds coming from the cold pool have any effect on top-down versus bottom-up formation. It seems from the animations that stronger forward flank winds being warmer and being overall less dense cause the particles to quickly rise as they tighten around the updraft and funnel down, where the cold pool particles stay more surface based and rise up. I know this is done with the assumption of a tornado producing EF-5 winds and is in progress, but it makes me wonder if storms where the cold pool is more dominant from rain cooling or encountering any features in the area around it would be more likely to form initially as vortices at the surface before the main funnel appears and vice-versa. It's probably something simple that meteorologists have figured out by now, but i do like asking questions I don't know even if the answer is negligable. Negligable is still a workable varaible.
For sure the density of the cold pool (or, the "coldness" of it) plays a huge role in all mesoscale convective phenomena! If the cold pool is too cold, it tends to rush ahead of the updraft and "gust out". If it's not cold enough, you may not be able generate enough horizontal vorticity in the cold pool. But really it's chaos and there likely won't be neat tidy answers to "the tornado problem"
Posted this on a collaboration video with you and hank too. G L My father is a chemical engineer, I got his analytical mind but not his level of intelligence. The following are thoughts/key points from our discussion. Consider them just possibilities. 1) the correlation of pressure dropping, the cold air being utilized more than once thought and the vacuum created by the pressure drop may be a precursor. Think of all that water vapor suddenly becoming rain drops and the space the water vapor originally took up as a gas, being suddenly left open. That might create your vaccum to turn that horizontal rotation vertical to create that upside down U. Lightening is correlated to rain and such, so its interesting that lightening is often intense around a powerful supercell or storm. So, the intensity of the lightening could signify the intensity of those water particles rapidly consolidating into water droplets, possibly forming the updraft of suction of that rotation skyward. Only problem with this theory is that some tornadoes have minimal rain associated with them, so that throws a wrench in there. 2) I have discussed the idea of the cold air in relation to an engine in another video but I'll summarize it again here with some thoughts added in. Life on this planet revolves around oxygen. Plants create it, we and the beasts breath it, fire needs it and even engines need it. Diesel engines run on pressure and LOVE cold air. Compress cold air and diesel in 6 inline cylinders in the right way and you'll push out serious horsepower as you add more fuel and cool air. Hot air works...yeah, but they LOVE cool air because it is more oxygen rich in nature. Particles are moving slower so you can get more oxygen in there. When we breathe, cool air (not freezing but cool) does better than hot air for us. What if a storm was no different? What if they defied their own laws of buoyancy because they feed on the cold air and oxygen? Obviously the temperature difference and wind shear play a roll in storm development...but what if it REALLY wanted the cold air? These are just thoughts and maybe they are way off. But I think it will take more than meteorologists to figure this out. We need to research the properties of air (oxygen) more in relation to pressure and temperature. What does it do and how does it move in certain conditions? Maybe we are focused on the wrong areas because we spent years trying to prove theories rather than to find the truth. Scientific process cannot be used to PROVE something or else we will try in every way to MAKE IT HAPPEN that way. We are trying to validate things rather than discover. This collaboration between those on the ground and those with the tech is paramount to the field of study. We have to match what is thought to be discovered with reality before we move on to the next step. Otherwise, we are speeding down a road hypothesized to be smooth and straight when it might have a cliff ahead. We need to involve more people that may have been left out before. Chemical engineers, biologists, chemists, chasers, meteorologists, astronomers....anyone could have a theory to test as they have a different angle of approach and are unhindered by preconceived notions (mostly). Where we are now, we warn at every sign of rotation, so we have nothing to lose by studying new theories and observing. Maybe take that model and tell it what to do. I know you want it to do it alone, but introduce factors you think would kill that tornado development and see what happens. Maybe by searching for what hinders them, we will discover what causes them. Take a bad tornadic events data and change one thing at a time little by little; humidity, temps, dew point, wind speeds.....see if you can mess the storm up and discover what it needs the most to thrive. Sorry for the long comment, but maybe someone will see it and do something with it. Maybe these things have already been done...
