Seems like most of the damage initiates from the loss of the roofing on most of the buildings. Perhaps some new design is required that makes the roofing resistant to the "pull" of the vortices and would go some way to saving many buildings and their occupants.
You can get roofing that can survive an F1 maybe an F2, but after that there's not much you can do. There's a picture on the web of a supposedly tornado-proof home in Oklahoma that got shredded by an F4.
@@Gearjammer5150 I believe it was a concrete dome home, great design to withstand tornadoes but it took a direct hit from a high-end EF4. The dome was still standing, but it had serious structural damage all across it and all the windows/doors were gone.
Great video. With drones today, we don’t need to worry about safety of helicopter pilots that have gotten great footage. But had to dodge the winds and flying debris.
Hands down the best footage ever of a tornado. Get an incredible perspective on what is really occurring, it’s structure and impact. Unreal work Reed! Be safe!
Absolutely the most unusual footage I have ever seen. The transparency is insane. Surely this helps with research? Anyway this is the perfect example of how a tornado can be "invisible" on the ground until enough debris is pulled up or the dark funnel goes low enough to the ground. It also shows how a tornado can seem to not be strong from the ground when it is. I share this fact all of the time.

My favorite take is the one at 4:58 where it begins with the drone taking off and moving towards the funnelcloud. It really gives a overwhelming sense of depth and size of the disaster unfolding, and how strangely beautiful it looks. I'm glad there were no deaths, which just shows how important preparedness and awareness is. Also a huge debt of gratitude to storm chasers who get the warning out quick.
@user-vi5gk3wz8n none of it falls to the ground because of suction force OUTSIDE THE VOrtex. we detect tornadoes BECAUSE THERES STUFF LAUNCHED FROM THEM THOUSANDS OF FEET IN THE AIR
I'm an old geezer who has been interested in severe weather since the 1960's after watching a tornado as it ripped across the the town I live near. I've been an avid watcher of any and every film or video footage of tornadoes for decades, and while this entire video is extraordinary, I have to say that the first 30 seconds or so of this video have to be the most remarkable footage of a tornado ever recorded, absolutely amazing!
I think back in the 90s there was some jawdropping helicopter footage of a "drill bit" tornado (to use the popular new euphemism) going across a forested area. I think the speed of that thing may have exceeded this one, perhaps you've seen it. But it was plucking trees from the ground and throwing them a thousand feet in the air and I think at one point it even tore a bunch of water from a pond. Either way, the video above is next level for sure (not the least of which for sheer clarity and stability).
Being Australian, the only coverage we ever see of tornadoes is on the news and from the ground, and it is usually dark, ill defined and shot from a great distance away, but this footage is something else! WOW! Now I understand just how devastating these tornadoes are. Those houses instantaneously disintegrated the moment they were hit, and now I can see for the first time just how erratic and unpredictable they really are. Thank you for this Reed. It is a truly exceptional record of a natural phenomenon which until now I have never seen with such frightening clarity and detail.
I don't know what to say. Watching people's homes torn apart is awful and yet the majesty of nature is incredible. At the very least there is a lot to be learned from this footage. Thank you Reed and Team: Tim would be proud.
Its mostly due to how American build their homes. In Poland 99% of homes are made of sturdy thick concrete steel enforced bricks. We got few years ago one massive for us Tornado it was F3 if i recall correctly, homes survived only damages was damaged windows from flying things and few roof tiles taken away.
@@CarTastic-fv6eoNot exactly, mainly depends on where you live in the United States. I live in Texas and majority of homes in Texas are made of brick because it is cheaper to build your house of brick in the south than it is in places like the Midwest or anywhere else.
A professional storm chaser happened to be in the area, this is not the norm and shouldn't be expected anytime a tornado happens, this was the perfect conditions, time, everything.

thank you so much for providing this footage!! as a 20 year old lifelong resident of andover, ks this was the scariest tornado experience i’ve ever had. both my parents lived through the 1991 andover tornado and i am so glad it wasn’t as deadly as that one!! luckily we have no reported fatalities so far
GOD hath blessed us that none amongst us hath perished! ✝ All obnoxiousness aside, it's great news to hear that no one died from this whirlwind. It's a shame that the houses and community buildings are gone but as long as you are all alive that's the most importing thing that can come out of this disaster.
@@Alexander_Tronstad : Basement tornado shelters, probably. And good weather forecasting that sent out alerts telling people to get in them well before this hit.
That’s one of the weirdest tornadoes I’ve ever seen. No precipitation, barely visible condensation cloud at times. Multi- vortex and small but violent. What a catch team Timmer!
@@christysdeals4u Yeah the drone is thousands of feet from the funnel, of course there's no wind. Around a tornado and away from the downdraft there's generally calm, still air.
Normally you can't see the interior of the tornado because it sucks up so much dirt and debris the center winds become obscured. This tornado only just formed right on top of those houses so it was still transparent.
April 27 2011 my town was tore up by EF4 tornado it took out homes and businesses it pretty much flattened Cullman Alabama that's something I'll never forget
This footage has extremely high scientific value. Nice, clear looks at the vortex breakdown, tornadogenesis, vortex stretching, and shedding, plus inflow jet & vortex interactions with the ground, trees, and structures.
I’d love it if you would get with Reed and produce a video explaining what we’re seeing. This is totally amazing footage and the geeks among us would really love it if someone walked us through.
This is probably the most detailed footage I've seen of the inner dynamics of a funnel cloud --- you can see the multiple vortices and updraft damage on the houses so damn clear it's frightening --- obviously, these 4K drone cameras are worth every penny!
This is the most incredible tornado footage I think I've ever seen. This vantage point makes it clear why so many witnesses said the tornado dropped down, then went back up and dropped down again. From where they were on the ground, their view of the bottom of the tornado was obscured, and the condensation shaft didn't go all the way down, but the wind vortex certainly did and the tornado was on the ground the whole time. Just amazing. Glad you were able to find your drone again.
If you carefully watch the orbit the of debris around the visible tornado it seems to be the actual tornado is a good deal bigger than the condensation funnel would suggest as well. A very very dangerous situation.
@@zelkuta Yes, I agree. That and the fact that there were multiple vortexes rotating around each other on the ground. It was shocking to see houses in front of it, seemingly out of reach, suddenly exploding up into it before the part we could see got to them. This footage will be studied by meteorologists for years.
@@zelkuta Yes, I noticed that, too! We don't experience tornadic action like that (so far, and don't want any, LOL) where I live but this was an exceptional view of it. Because of this video, I'll definitely try to educate others this simple fact; many tornadoes are a lot like a tip of an iceberg, there's a lot more there then meets the eye!
@@HughLlewellyn there is one vortex. The vortex becomes invisible when it hits place without dust, in this case street. What looks like second vortex is only rotating dust.
The fact that the condensation funnel is just barely visible when you zoom out, and the houses still look like little specks really shows just how massive tornadoes really are, even the smaller ones.
I hate that this happens to people at all. It's so devastating. After the Xmas tornado in garland, TX, I saw first hand the heartbreak that families go through when this happens. I hope they have a speedy recovery.
I have NEVER seen footage this good before. Not just the damage, which was horrific (and I hope the people in those houses are alright), but the vortex breakdown was as clear as crystal. This video deserves all the awards.
This is actually the craziest tornado footage I’ve ever seen. It looks surreal, like I’m actually there watching from afar. Most tornado videos has this sort of unreal fantastical feel to them, but this _actually_ feels real. I’ve never seen such amazing footage!
Hey 👋 there have you ever seen a tornado 🌪 in person I’m just woundering ok 👌🏾 Dude how many people died or injured 🤕 During the tornado 🌪 warning ⚠️ in. Andover Kansas in 2022. Dude I’m just woundering ok 👌🏾 Dude
Great footage, Reed! I’ve watched it a hundred times and it is still amazing. I lived in the apartments north of that row of exploding houses. I shot cell phone video prior to taking cover in the elementary school. We were a direct hit …but on the gym…which was the storm shelter. I’ll never forget the sound of it hitting the building. Unreal. I came out in time to see it destroy the YMCA. I remember videoing it…and realizing my RAV4 was gone. It was a scary thing to go through and at the same time an adrenaline rush. We were without power and I was beat down but did not sleep until the next day. Thanks for sharing the video with the world.
I'm in the heart of "Tornado Alley", have seen multiple tornadoes, lived through one that got part of the house, photographed them, but this.... This is different than anything I've seen because of what it was shot with. It helps people understand the unpredictable nature of them. I'm in awe. Absolutely unreal.
Hi Frank that horizon spanning cloud arch in the back ground sky is that a typical sky formation/presentation with tornado activity? Here in New Zealand we have a positive ion charging weather system called a nor' wester denoting the direction from which it emanates. I believe the same wind is called a chinook in Canada and föhn in parts of Europe. But these tend to involve mountain ranges and coast lines. Anyway, take care, FJB & God bless from NZ.
I'm crazy, yes. I'm crazy because I drive. The odds of dying in a car crash are 1:100 and the chance of dying in a tornado is 1:5,000,000. I'd also think it would be much crazier to leave my friends and family to move. Not only because they are the reason I live, but also the fact that I'm more likely to die in that one single car ride moving than here in a tornado. STILL, I understand why you feel the way you do. The 2% of tornado's that are deadly are horrific and my heart melts for their loved ones.
I've watched this video multiple times and I'm just amazed at this footage. Its really something we've never seen before. Whether you're just a weather fanatic or a storm chaser/meteorologist capturing this storm on the drone is a game changer. I can see drones being utilized much more often now in chases, and as a weather fanatic, im here for it. Please keep getting these types of shots.
Right. Why risk your life when you could just get a long range drone and get better footage? I understand there is a drone license that's required but it's really not too difficult to get from what I understand.
Very odd, most tornadoes will move forward at a fairly steady pace from what I've seen. Never saw one pause like that for a few seconds then speed away like it got spooked or suddenly realized it left the oven on.
@@sabishiihito I think most of that is the debris field/rain/condensation around the overall tornado. These micro-vortices are what do the real damage and is why tornado damage can seem so random, as far as I understand tornado dynamics
I'm 27 and have been fascinated by tornadoes ever since I was 5. In all my years, I can say with certainty that this is the best footage i've ever seen. While they exist, not too many videos show what a building being destroyed looks like from the outside as its happening with the clarity this, and another drone video that came out this year. The ones that do are either shakey phone/security footage, most of the time just the immediate before and aftermath. With this you can actively make out every shape the wind takes, how building material reacts and what its specific breaking point is etc. Drone footage like this, if studied correctly by the right people, may one day lead to safer, more durable homes and buildings.
@@melanieortiz712 Actually, many people become much more fascinated the closer we get. This is one reason vehicles have been built whos purpose is to drive into the funnel itself.
@Michael Zukerman No, he didn't. It was filmed by Alberto Cetina and posted on the Official DJI Owners Group by Alberto. He may have sold the footage to Reed, I don't know. But I'm pretty sure Reed did not take the footage.
Now imagine the damage one does that is a full strong twister. You’re right this is a weaker one as far as tornadoes go, and it does that. Just shows how powerful they are.
Nah you can see it’s pretty big the base is just the stronger it’s visible around the :45-50 second mark you can see very vaguely the outline of the tornado outside the clearly visible part and it’s big
We have a pretty extensive and well-maintained alert system for tornados and severe weather. Most of the towns Here in Kansas have what are called tornado sirens, they are big horns that rotate and scream out an eerie shrill of a sound, almost like an air raid siren. We usually get about 10 minutes to either get out of the path or hunker down in a storm shelter if you are so lucky as to have one.
Same,I am blown away, no pun intened ,at the shear power and beauty of mother nature. Its like Shes' saying STOP MESSING WITH ME. STOP POLLUTING THE EARTH OR ELSE!!!!
Hes been doing this for decades, Reed was even on a show called storm chasers on the discovery channel, trust me they already do use his footage, and have been for a long time.
A new era in twister footage with all these drones everywhere. I saw a video similar to this one a couple weeks ago by a drone. Gonna see a lot more of these eventually.
Both beautiful and scary at the same time. Astounding footage particularly at the beginning. The way several houses in a row literally get sucked straight up. The way the vortex curly cued is something I'm not sure I've seen before.
It really is! Very disconcerting how the structures just fly apart. Unreal perspective from the drone! Thoughts & Prayers to those affected in the devastation!
I've watched tons of tornado footage but this is by far been the most unique, that part at 0:45 where is spirals perfectly for a split second is insane, never ever seen that before
The first part of this video is probably the best footage to show people when they ask why you didn't see the tornado. It's kinda transparent and hard to tell if it's actually on the ground or not. Tornados don't start off easy to see until they've picked up some dirt and debris. Also--That tornado was wicked fast. Even if you DID see it coming or heard the sirens, you'd have seconds to get to somewhere safe. Yikes.
@@greggarner4477 yes sir!! 🙏🙏🙏 absolutely it is and only 4 serious injuries all expected to survive!! God was very good to us. 🤞🤞We pray his mercy continues as we are expecting more potential tornadoes within the next couple of days!

I worked the derrick, so at about 100 ft (about 28-29 meters) above the ground, the view of such things is spectacular. I've seen several at various distances, crossing the prairie and wheat fields. Now we all understand why we have a tornado shelter and a weather 📻 radio makes you think seriously to be prepared and listen to Reed Timmer. Amazing video
Dang! That twister was just ripping through those homes like an explosion. I’ve never seen footage like that. Most tornados are veiled behind rain, darkness, and poor visibility. But this one is just naked destruction.

HAARP. Notice it missed the 99% of raw land behind it. Same as the holiday farm fire in Oregon in 2020, along with all the other fires that broke out that night between CA and WA. Windiest day on record but the hotspots of all the fires were connected on radars in a perfectly straight line
Wow! Astonishing footage! This must be one incredibly stable drone - can’t imagine trying to fly it and avoid the downdrafts and updrafts, too. What’s so unusual is the lack of rain to obscure everything. I imagine dear Dr. Fujita would have loved the chance to analyze this storm…
You are right, Dr, Fujita would have loved it. I spent a summer with him in Alabama looking for storms back in the 1980s, We never saw anything good, maybe one strong Micro-burst.
While watching I was thinking the same thing. How this commonplace technology would have smacked meteorologists on the side of the head just a decade or two ago.
Mr. Tornado saved many lives with his discovery of what a Tornado was fully capable of doing to a community. He broke those Tornadoes down to where you could better understand their capabilities. That's what he devoted his life to do. Saving lives from a disaster with the force to pick up a house, and fling it for a couple of football fields.
That is hands down the most insane footage I’ve ever seen. Literally viewing the contact point with the ground. Amazing what drones can capture with a higher viewpoint. I can’t wait to see what scientific analysis is done on this video. Most importantly my thoughts and prayers go to those effected by this storm.
You've captured the best footage I've ever seen, truly footage of a lifetime. Congrats on this, Reed, hard work pays off. Hopeful this footage will help scientists and be beneficial to the public in the future.
You made the right call on area yesterday and got rewarded with some of the most amazing footage I think has ever been taken. Prayers for all the people affected, but great job getting this footage Reed!
I've NEVER seen a tornado almost spin up out of nowhere & be that destructive that fast, especially with no rain/thunderstorms accompanying it. Amazing footage! I pray all of those people in this clip are ok
The low pressure outside because of the tornado caused the relative high pressure inside the homes to take the path of least resistance to the low pressure outside. ( high pressure always moves to low pressure) hence the low pressure pushed through the sheet rock in the ceilings and out into the attics. That high volume of air blew the roofs up and off into the tornado.
I was watching from a point near the Whitewater River and could only make out there was a tornado until it got north of Central and east of Andover. I was nervous and this video shows that the funnel itself isn't always visible, it could be building right above you and not see it.
I'm sad to see people's homes and lives being destroyed it's always upsetting and my heart and prayers go out to everyone affected. There have been many awesome videos of tornadoes by themselves in a field etc. However, this is the best extended footage of a tornado hitting structures I have ever seen. It really helps glue together all the little bits I have learned over the years about tornados. This video is a physics lesson, a weather lesson, and a tornado lesson all in one . Bravo to Reed Timmer and his team. You have a new subscriber in me.
It makes me sad to see the horrific damage a tornado can do to a house --- I just imagine if a family was huddled inside and suddenly these horrific winds suck the entire structure up into the sky a 1000 feet and rip it asunder!
This was by far the most detailed and chaotic tornado footage I've ever seen! I'm extremely sorry to see this under these circumstances, and wish this community a fast recovery!
Oh wow, the way it moves and creates that double-helix shape is so captivating. I've never seen footage like this, only home videos and storm chaser footage. This is on a whole new level because it really shows you what the tornado is like from a true spectator's perspective. No talking or background noise, no shaky camera, just pure destructive force.
Yeah this footage was a lot more stunning than any tornado special on "The Weather Channel" --- which is always overlaid with ominous music and commentary --- just watching nature unleash it's fury in silence is very mind-blowing
Born and raised in Oklahoma. My family and I lived in Perry in the 70s when a tornado literally went over our house. It leveled the block before and after ours. When they say it sounds like a locomotive and/or a swarm of bees... it does. It sounded like both at different times. Although it was only a few minutes, it seemed like hours. I was only about 5 back then, but when I hear the wind start sounding like that now during storm season, I panic. Tornadoes are so beautiful, but can be so deadly. Thank you, Reed, for warning people, and for showing what tornadoes can actually do.
Sometimes the cortex takes water vapor (clouds) and sucks it in too. But tornado vortexes are invisible by themselves. They’re just air. I’ve only take. 3 weather classes and fly planes. I have no clue what Tim talking about.
Incredible, mesmerizing, and horrifying - all at the same time! I don't think it can be emphasized enough that if anyone would have been outside in the path of this tornado, they likely wouldn't have survived. This should be a testament that tornado warnings are to always be taken seriously and to take shelter.
I agree those ppl that took shelter when it was coming were very lucky, when you see in the Drone footage of one house literally was ripped off its foundation and lofted for maybe 4 to 5 blocks from where it was from is so of the most horrifying parts of a tornado. good thing no one was dead in this EF3 tornado to end up in a way that those houses were ripped off so easily kinda makes ya wanna know what sort of building construction most of those house were made of. seeing most of it being wood tells me construction to make home in Tornado ally should be constructed a bit better to withstand higher winds than what they are now. seems like those looked like newer homes to. these drone footage could help building inspectors and architects figure out a better way to construct home to withstand those. its like how it is with Hurricanes after they have struck in an area so many times the building construction changes to suit the area. so having these types of footage may help in the long run. Reed your drone took some amazing video that shows how much destruction a EF3 does, now ya need to look for EF4 tornados and get before and after damage if it hits place like this. We already have a Idea what EF5 damage looks like total anniahlation of the landscape.
@@techchaos We already know some of what builders and homeowners can do: bolt the houses to their foundations and fasten down the roofs with hurricane ties. The homeowner can do it themselves if the builder won't, and it's not outrageously expensive. Unfortunately, in much of the Midwest, there are no building regulations that require this. (That has a lot to do with the unpleasant politics of rural city councils, etc.)
That is some of the most incredible tornado footage I've ever seen, especially the distant shots at about the 5:30 mark. I'm always amazed by the somewhat focused area of the most damaging part of the vortex, how one house can be completely obliterated while houses on either side only sustain relatively minor damage.
This may be the most recorded tornado from the most different angles I've ever seen. Not only are there multiple cell phone videos of this, but there are also multiple drone videos. Incredible.
This has to be the most incredible video of a tornado i’ve ever seen… One thing i find interesting is that you can clearly see some houses are extremely close to the tornado debris cloud but only receive light roof damage, while houses right next to them or maybe even further away from the tornado get their roofs completely ripped apart. Insane footage!
That’s all due to rotation! One side will usually be almost perfectly fine while the other side of the tornado rips the houses to shreds! Science is crazy!
This is the most incredible and demonstrative tornado footage I've seen. Even as a drill-bit funnel, you can clearly see how violent the rotation is, and the extreme wind velocity. The instant the point of the vortex hit a house, it was like a smart bomb hit it. It doesn't take a 1.5-2 mile wide wedge to wreak havoc, and this video is the best example of that. Amazing, and awesome to hear no one was seriously hurt or killed. I heard they didn't have much warning either. IDK what else to say.
Incredible footage of one of Mother's Nature's most primal forces. Magnificent & terrifying at the same time. Good to hear no one was killed or injured. I offer my condolences to all who've lost their homes, businesses, & any animals who were injured or killed.
@@katherynlopes6416 I've never experienced tornado, but it's my understand that they do happen fast and without warning, as you say. @David, there were four injured but they were not critical. Yes, excellent meteorological and warning systems, combined with it still being light outside, contributed to that and no deaths.

@Buds of Spring I was about to write the same. I have survived two Tornadoes, one in '65, and one while I was golfing in '80 and had no shelter, lucky the last one I was caught standing outside, heard the roar of a train, my Dad beside me, and I said "there's no train tracks within five miles of here", then I took a few steps towards the clubhouse, and I was just surrounded by sepia colored dust, luckily hit with just some twigs but they stung like a honeybee. Maybe it was over us fifteen seconds, seemed like time went into slow motion. The wind was pushing on me from all sides of my body, I felt like I was in a straight jacket. And it was gone, and I looked back at my Dad, who was staring in another direction--the golf course's tallest tree, about 75 feet with a trunk four feet thick, was broken at its base like a toothpick, about 30 yards away from me. 45 minutes prior to all that, there was not a single cloud in the sky, the forecast only called for "unsettled weather". The course was crowded on the first nine holes, we were teeing off for the tenth hole, but thinking of calling it a day because the other golfers wanted to rush our game, so they could play thru. Twenty minutes after the Tornado went thru, which only stripped some shingles off of the clubhouses and toolsheds, in a light mist, with the greens of four holes caught in the path of the Tornado covered with twigs, my Dad and I looked at each other, and finished our round of golf, everyone else was scared off the course, except for the owners, who knew us well. I picked up the nickname "Elijah", though I was not carried into the heavens by the F0.5 Tornado, small as it was, my Dad said the funnel enveloped me and he did not expect to see me standing where I was. Natural disasters are not beautiful--the only beauty I have found, since I have been in a half dozen good earthquakes and one hurricane, is that I and those near me survived, and listened to me when I told them how to take shelter.
they did.. but EF4 is just amazing fot middle Europe. That day was very special. To be honest, all week was very stormy. Everyday SQUELLS, derechos... and the last day od the week was the most interesting. Many SCs, the highest level of warning, large hails, severe wind gusts and one of the most powerfull tornado in Europe in the last several years. That day was explosive.
I'm impressed with the stability of the drone given the weather. If this is practical, more people should do it. It's much safer than the old fashioned" drive fast at a tornado" method and offers more perspective.
Yes! Like citizen scientists and nature data collection ☺️ If multiple sources are recording the tornado the data can be combined to better understand the nature of those weather patterns, like Twister but with a tech update 😁🤖🚀
Yes...like just because it doesn't look like it is connected to the ground...doesn't mean it isn't! I have seen this live twice and if you didn't look down or had a grove of tree's in the way you might have reported rotating funnel/stove pipe cloud but unsure if it touched down...in the first instance, 10 mins later I drove to the neighbor's to check on them to find they lost half their cows...literally didn't find them for a couple hours...as other neighbors inspected for damage and losses they reported having x amount of cows added to their herds...not a fence was damaged and the cows were returned...bruised, minor cuts but none were perished or unfit to milk that night. The other twisted our railroad crossing 180 degrees and twisted 1 brand new trailer house to make it look like a spiral, one end still tornado strapped to the ground the other sitting on the leveling blocks but on it's side...the wrought iron steps still in there spot along with a cheap plastic Walmart kiddy pool with water still in it...but the cement bird bath was on top of a garage half a block up the tornado path...it was just bizarre the weird things that happened...that you always hear about and nod to while saying yup, uhhuh, ok, sure in your head...
I have never seen anything like this before. If it wasn't so destructive and lethal I would take pleasure in seeing something so awe inspiring in such a new and brilliant perspective. This footage is absolutely amazing. Thank you Reed. But RIP to the victims, and my thoughts and prayers with their families and friends, and the 1000+ who had their homes destroyed or damaged.
Fantastic footage, very scary. I grew up in Wichita where we were always taught to be prepared for tornados. We'd have tornado drills in school. Most housing way back then had basements and that's where we'd head to when a tornado was predicted. After one went through near the Eastborough neighborhood (this has been many years ago now), my sister and I rode our bicycles over to see what happened and virtually every single house on both sides of the street in a one block area were completely decimated. The areas before and after were unaffected. That's one of the really scary aspects...a tornado is unpredictable. My relatives that lived on farms in Kansas always had storm shelters underground.
Wow this is definitely the new way to watch tornados!! Also, I love the fact that we can zoom in and manipulate the video on YT to see and learn so much of how the tornado works. Revolutionary in my opinion.
It’s so sad that this tornado went into neighborhoods where people live. I’m glad to hear that there were no casualties, hoping for the best for the people of Andover.

I am awestruck by the beauty of the destruction because it doesn't seem real. I hope for more strom tracking like this, this is what drones were meant for.
Dr. Reed Timmer finished his PhD in meteorology in 2015, with that said, I was guilty of seeing this man as just a celebrity storm chaser ( I'm sure most do) until learning of his years of study and degrees. And now he is the only person that shares his knowledge before these events by going into such depths on storm prediction it's hard to comprehend and is frankly unprecedented. Reed may never demand to be called Dr but I will gladly make sure people know that he has earned that title and deserves the recognition.
Amen to that! Reed is the best in his chosen field of meteorology! I have followed him for years and have so much respect for him. He is my go-to for weather and always will be.
Reed, this by far is the absolute best image EVER presented to someone who has never saw a tornado in person. I actually felt the image thru a clarity and range of field or scale never represented before in a video. You Sir, are the GOAT! At least a Doc. with them fancy initials attached to your bio now. So cool you still love the field work. This trip may have paid all the bills my friend! GREAT JOB!!
It's crazy how something so terrifying can be so mesmerizing and absolutely beautiful at the same time! The debris looks like confetti and glitter swirling around! Prayers for the people who were effected by this tornado 🌪 🙏
I work in news and have visited tornado devastated neighborhoods, including fatal ones. I’ve seen the emotional impact of these storms on the people who have lost everything, but it’s absolutely amazing to see this from a scientific perspective. Hopefully this footage is useful to those who study meteorology in understanding how these things behave.
I don't envy you when you're 'boots on the ground' doing coverage of such areas. I hope you get support help whenever you and your crew need it. You can't unsee or unhear or unsmell ...this level of hell 😞

Derek, Why in the hell do Building keep building Legacy Construction that will NEVER resist a tornado? Do you wonder why a Boeing airliner does not tear apart event at 350 mph? The homes need to have a smooth skin, similar to a dome house preferably built with concrete. Other option is build the house like a Boeing aircraft or tube.
Watched this from my backyard...what a wild storm. Thank you for capturing this. It's wild that over 2 years later and there is still tons of storm damage visible.
Compelling! The clarity of the footage and absence of rain will probably make this video a case study for years to come for structural analysts and meteorologists.
This is a million times freakier, creepier, more chaotic, more beautiful, and more terrifying than any other twister footage I've ever seen. The nightmarish glittering snow globe. The ground breaking up and blasting upward into an invisible cyclone. The long uncanny spirals and the bursts of lighting on the streets as power lines explode. Gotta be the best most clear video of a tornado in action. Amazing. Crazy that a couple blocks away it looks sunny enough you could be out mowing the yard.
100% the most HD, high detail view of a tornado's damage path I have ever seen. The definition of textbook quality. We could have only dreamed of footage like this in the past.
The amount of energy concentrated into such a small area and the damage it can do is incredible. I hope no one was hurt. It looked deceptively small and weak at first until it became better defined by the debris.
The most incredible tornado footage I have ever seen showing the sheer power of a tornado as it rips homes and buildings to shreds. It is nothing short of a miracle that there were no fatalities (as of my last check anyway). Outstanding job, Reed! One of my dreams is to go on a chase with your team someday as I love studying the weather myself, but likely will never happen.
I know you mentioned about removing the sound so viewers can just observe, and that's perfectly fine. Just for those who don't have the experience, if you've ever been in or under one, you would also know that the sound is just as scary...like a giant freight train about to roll right over you with bashees screaming and howling on it. Having both the visual and aureal in real time takes things to a whole new level of scary. It truly makes you understand just how small each of us is when Mother Nature gets PO'd and reminds us of that fact.
@geobee In the description, the storm chaser mentioned he had removed the audio from the clip. That's why I brought it up. You are right, though, that consumer units generally don't have audio.
Ja 300, in Texas we had a twister go right down our country road. The house 200 feet away was untouched. ALL the windows & doors left open so the house wouldn't blow apart. The telephone poles looked like a porquipine from the straw that was slammed THROUGH them. You could look into the straw & see light on the other end. Weirdest QUIET I ever heard in my life just before the entire sky started clouding up & rotating from horizon to horizon. Neighbor had just put a tornado shelter into our front yard underground w a heavy metal hinge balanced lid & when I ran outside he yelled Tornado Coming! Open all your windows & doors & Get into the shelter! We were new, knew he knew his stuff. Ran back inside, grabbed my wife, flung the doors open ( all windows were already open, hot Texas day) and went into the shelter. Locked the lid about 6 inches open & saw the funnel travel straight down our single lane dirt road. NO homes were touched. Lil funnel, no wider than the road but the SOUND was deafining. Wife on the bottom screaming, me on top of the ladder watching through the crack of the lid. It was AWESOME!! Only lasted a short while before the funnel went back up & after that the sky went clear & the birds started up again. Whole even was about 20 minutes from clear sky to black & cloudy back to clear sky. Only damage was slight flattening of the hayfields alongside the road & light stuff inside the cheap lil prefab house being blown around but nobodys farmhouse was damaged & nobody hurt. Neighbor said thoes we're pretty regular in thoes parts. Small & amusing. He said sometimes it would rain fish, frogs & snakes that were sucked up off Lake Ray Hubbard & flung out the top near where we lived. Lake Ray Hubbard was only a half mile away. Had a connector stream in our backyard that flowed from it down to Lake Lavon. LOTS of interesting stuff in that creek. Loved Texas, interesting land, great people. ( Most of them) And amazing ODD weather.
@@tristantimothy1004 Air pressure equalization is a myth, do not waste time opening windows and doors, go straight to shelters. It is likely the neighbor was just very lucky, nothing to do with doors or windows.
Wow, this footage is just amazing. A small tornado, but instinctively strong. IT literally shows multiple vortexes and some are invisible until it picks up debris up and up and away up so high! Wow. It was over in a few seconds. I can't even imagine being inside a mile-wide wedge tornado hitting up F5 strength winds. WOW!
This is absolutely and truly the most amazing footage I've ever seen of a tornado. The absolute force and violence can clearly be seen as to just how destructive this tornado actually is.
Absolutely terrifying. A few years ago we had a tornado touch down on our street. It took only the canvas top from our gazebo but took our neighbor's roof it's so bizarre.
This is such wild footage. As others have said, this is SUPER good footage, some of the best I've seen. It's crazy how it doesn't even look like all that much/fully formed, but it's still ripping through houses with ease. Mother nature is wild.
We watched this tornado go past us. It appeared to be such a thin tornado compared to others we’ve seen in our area over the years. But the devastation from this little twister was unbelievable. I was shocked at the damage caused compared to the small size .. it looked like little strings jumping up and down out of the sky .. like a yo-yo. But if you’ve seen the damage this thing caused, you can only imagine what the huge ones can do! Great footage!
Considering the airborne debris field. Looked like some 20' tarpaulins used to cover crop harvests floating up to a 1/4 mile from the core for quite a while. What was shocking (read horrifying) was the up-suck that just dissolved those houses to the foundations in under a second. I'm glad you're safe but don't expect me at the local cookout cause this insanity is why I'm staying on the other side of the Rockies. I'll take the once a year tiny little 1F sputters we get in New Mexico over those monsters. XD
@@jonathandoelander6130 Well, yes... because, obviously, people in Tornado alley deserve all those tornados, year after year, due to their overwhelming sinful nature, and not because of the weather patterns that occur due to the conflux of energy and moisture from the Gulf meeting the cold, dry air masses coming from the Rockies and Canada. /s
Seems like most of the damage initiates from the loss of the roofing on most of the buildings. Perhaps some new design is required that makes the roofing resistant to the "pull" of the vortices and would go some way to saving many buildings and their occupants.
Yes maybe a design similar to the hurricane proof homes of FL would be ideal
You can get roofing that can survive an F1 maybe an F2, but after that there's not much you can do. There's a picture on the web of a supposedly tornado-proof home in Oklahoma that got shredded by an F4.
@@Gearjammer5150 I believe it was a concrete dome home, great design to withstand tornadoes but it took a direct hit from a high-end EF4. The dome was still standing, but it had serious structural damage all across it and all the windows/doors were gone.
Concrete roof/house.
Concrete dome home.
Watching entire homes be lifted like they were toys is so unbelievable. This is the clearest and most detailed tornado footage I’ve ever seen.
Yeah, for me too. It moved so quick, and was so destructive.
Many excellent videos of tornadoes close up, few that show the speed and destructive ability they have.
It didn't "lift entire homes". It tore the roofs and some of the top stories off homes. It was an EF3.
Great video. With drones today, we don’t need to worry about safety of helicopter pilots that have gotten great footage. But had to dodge the winds and flying debris.
@@tomgates316 One notes by the debris that the actual vortex is much wider than the funnel cloud itself. Agreed, a great video.

Wow you might really be right. I've never seen so clear a view of such a brief moment of tornado power.

Anyway this is the perfect example of how a tornado can be "invisible" on the ground until enough debris is pulled up or the dark funnel goes low enough to the ground. It also shows how a tornado can seem to not be strong from the ground when it is.
I share this fact all of the time.

It’s weird to say this, but what is your favorite tornado?
I think back in the 90s there was some jawdropping helicopter footage of a "drill bit" tornado (to use the popular new euphemism) going across a forested area. I think the speed of that thing may have exceeded this one, perhaps you've seen it. But it was plucking trees from the ground and throwing them a thousand feet in the air and I think at one point it even tore a bunch of water from a pond. Either way, the video above is next level for sure (not the least of which for sheer clarity and stability).
I was 5 when the Super outbreak of April 1974 happened. I will never ever forget any of that.

Prince .... he didn't say weaker... he said tiny and invisible.... there is something very unnatural about this one.
@@SpicyNice It's not rain wrapped so it looks smaller than it actually is.
Because it was a controlled Tornado, man-made.
Man, this really shows how critical a tornado warning system would be. I hope folks in those destroyed homes were not harmed.
I anticipate channels like NATIONAL GEOGRAFIC using your videos in the future.

It's scary af to think a person inside the house can get sucked up as high as those roof sections 😳
One of the most terrifyingly beautiful things in nature.
It's really quite shocking how easily that tornado tears houses apart and throws things around like they are nothing. Great video Reed.
It really is! Very disconcerting how the structures just fly apart. Unreal perspective from the drone! Thoughts & Prayers to those affected in the devastation!
The upward motion is unreal.

Yikes.
Yeah it's hella scary when a tornado is whipping around deadly winds but you can't see it yet because the debris field hasn't developed

I was thinking that was the weirdest tornado I've ever seen. You're right, its the lack of rain.
The drone is far enough away that it's in calm/stable air. This is common outside the immediate vicinity of the vortex.
Mr. Tornado saved many lives with his discovery of what a Tornado was fully capable
of doing to a community. He broke those Tornadoes down to where you could better
understand their capabilities. That's what he devoted his life to do. Saving lives from
a disaster with the force to pick up a house, and fling it for a couple of football fields.
That is hands down the most insane footage I’ve ever seen. Literally viewing the contact point with the ground. Amazing what drones can capture with a higher viewpoint.

Because tornadoes are just wind. You don’t actually see tornadoes. You see what’s in them.

Incredible, mesmerizing, and horrifying - all at the same time! I don't think it can be emphasized enough that if anyone would have been outside in the path of this tornado, they likely wouldn't have survived. This should be a testament that tornado warnings are to always be taken seriously and to take shelter.
So true. If not picked up a person would be a pin cushion with all that debris. We have earthquakes in the west but they are nothing like this.
Totally, me and my family were absolutely not outside watching this tornado (which was about a mile away) from our deck.
Steven - I walked through it.
Incredible.
Based on the angles, I think there were at least three different drones filming this tornado, from various distances
I can think of a few off the top of my head that have mountains more video evidence than this. Moore, 2013 is one of them.
This is why I live in Western Canada, surrounded by lakes. No gators, earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, and I’m safe from fires.

There is nothing beautiful about this demonic thing
they did.. but EF4 is just amazing fot middle Europe. That day was very special. To be honest, all week was very stormy. WOW! So much can be learned from these shots... Never stop chasing!

The movie Twister seriously downplayed how mind-blowingly awesome these things truly are.

@@jakub8860 What a dramatic way to describe the updraft of warm air from a supercell thunderstorm..Lol. Nothing mysterious..It’s just basic atmospheric science..No God necessary..
W O W. This is stunning, frightening and incredible all in one. I feel so bad for the poor people who were affected by this 31 years after their last brush with extreme weather. Stay strong 💪
Hey 👋 there i just subscribed to your TH-cam channel ok 👌🏾 Dude lol 😂
Do you like spongebob square pants the tv 📺 show I’m just woundering ok Dude Soo have a great 👍 Sunday morning ok 👌🏾
Dude lol 😆 have you ever seen a tornado 🌪. In person I’m just woundering ok
Dude Soo have a great 👍 Day ok 👌🏾
Gotta be the best most clear video of a tornado in action. Amazing. Crazy that a couple blocks away it looks sunny enough you could be out mowing the yard.
100% the most HD, high detail view of a tornado's damage path I have ever seen. The definition of textbook quality. We could have only dreamed of footage like this in the past.
The amount of energy concentrated into such a small area and the damage it can do is incredible. I hope no one was hurt. It looked deceptively small and weak at first until it became better defined by the debris.
It just comes to show that looks aren't everything.
I live in Florida and I know we get hurricanes, but there's something extra terrifying about tornadoes. I couldn't live there 😶🌫️
I know you mentioned about removing the sound so viewers can just observe, and that's perfectly fine.
You are so very right.
FYI, most consumer drones are not recording sound neither have mics onboard for an obvious reason.
Devastating for all concerned.
What a shame.
Size doesn't equal power, you can get an EF5 intensity tornado as small as this and a mile wide wedge only doing EF2 damage
XD
God is warning you!!! Judgement coming
@@myaatheist2160 In Kansas???
@@jonathandoelander6130 Well, yes... because, obviously, people in Tornado alley deserve all those tornados, year after year, due to their overwhelming sinful nature, and not because of the weather patterns that occur due to the conflux of energy and moisture from the Gulf meeting the cold, dry air masses coming from the Rockies and Canada.
