I typed the numbers from SS, 3x different times in the 3 blank bars available on the OTP Manager and nothing happened. I then tried using my iPhone and the SS system said my email or PW were incorrect. They are correct. Then I made more unsuccessful efforts with my iMac & my iPhone. Sorry to hear you're having some issues. It can be frustrating when you know you're entering the correct information, but the SSA system has trouble validating your identity. It sounds like you'll need to either to go to your local SSA office or call SSA to see about getting this reset.
My question is I had no problem setting up an online account, when does social security update our accounts or do we have to do that this is about updating a new direct deposit I'm really at that point and I'm already without my Dec income they last advised and reassure me that my Dec n Jan income will arrive in my new chime account . I've already updated my new account at a walk in office which later social security said they showed no records of my being in office in SLC Utah . I have witnesses n my receipt showing when I arrived n my ticket number I was at office on Dec 4 2023 my concern is in my account under social security several days about a week has since went by and I was shocked to see an invalid account still sitting in my account Do I need to update the new chime account or I thought the man I spoke to last did I was advised Dec 29 I will get Dec n Jan income but now I'm since receiving a letter stating Dec 4 I waived attendance of payee something , and that's the day I was at my local office but I wasn't there concerning what there implying . What can I do
That's frustrating indeed. It sounds like you're doing all the right things. If you updated your direct deposit information either in-person or through your SSA.gov account, it will eventually get updated. But SSA can be really slow sometimes. Definitely stay on top of it and watch closely for updates.
I believe you can create a login.gov account with the new email address and then tie that login to your SSA account. If you get stuck, Login.gov has 24/7 support at 844-875-6446.
Sorry you're having trouble. If your info doesn't match their system, then it should stop the process and mention that they will send you an activation code by mail to fix the issue and bypass the problem later on.
Not sure why it's taking you down that path. Many years ago, you had to answer credit history questions to create an account, but not anymore. Again, not sure why you've been presented with those kinds of questions.
Alan - Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, I don't know. There could be a number of things going wrong here, since you're out of the country. Internet issues could be it. You could try a different browser.
@@MedicareMindset I have tried another browser with no success. I did however have some success using my wife’s telephone’s hotspot. We shall see how far I get and thanks for your response. I can only chalk it up to my Internet provider.
Some, mostly government, sites don't work when detecting a foreign IP. SSA's main page does show up, but I don't recall if I actually used it before without a VPN. I think problems like yours can be solved with a VPN on, with a US server selected, ideally close to where you used to live.
Yeah, sometimes you can put in all the information correctly...but there is some sort of data mismatch in their system. You'll need to contact SSA directly by phone to bypass this issue to create the account.
Hi Yo - I apologize for the delay in responding. I thought I replied already, but apparently didn't. That is a very good question. Unfortunately, you might need to speak with SSA at 800-772-1213 to get confirmation on how to create an account when the system will require a first and last name. Let me know what you find out. I'm very curious what the workaround is. Thanks!
Pamela - That's a really good question that we don't know the answer to. I think it would be best for you to call SSA at 800-772-1213. And please jump back on here and let me know what you find out. It will be extremely helpful information to pass along to folks. Thanks!
This is shown in our video. Watch it all. Pretty much at the very end of the account creation process is a page that is titled, "Tell us who you are". That's where you enter your name, including a suffix (if applicable).
Thanks for the video. When I applied, it stated that it would send me a standard mail with an activation code. However, you showed that you got access right away...weird.
Hi there. An activation code would be sent if there was a data mismatch. So when you get it, you’ll finish setting up your account using the activation code option.
@@gin6195 You should expect it by mail within 1-2 weeks. Though, I have heard of folks never getting the code. So if it doesn’t arrive, you’ll probably need to restart the process.
@@americano2000 No, it means something isn't matching up right in their system and/or they need to verify your identity. You can request the code to be sent by mail and then pick-up the process with that code to finish creating the account. Good luck!
A very good question. We specialize in Medicare insurance planning. Not sure about setting up an account for a child. I don't think it would be needed at age 4.
Jon - Please contact SSA at 800-772-1213 for assistance. However, what I've heard people do is use a family member's mailing address on the application for where the activation code and account creation updates are sent.
The initial step at the very beginning does send an email to start the Login.gov process. But later on, you choose whether it's a phone call or text message to receive the codes. But hey, as long as you get the code, then you're in good shape.
That means you already have a SSA.gov account (either through the old way, or via Login.gov or ID.me). I'm guessing you have it through the old system (not Login.gov or ID.me)...so at the top of the login page is where you can enter your username and password. Since you don't know it, choose the "Forgot Username" option. Enter the required information to get your username. Then go back to the login page and click "Forgot Password". You'll enter your username and some other items...and then they will allow you to reset the password.
@@MedicareMindset Since I live abroad and have a US virtual mailbox, that's what I was hoping for because I've changed my mailing address to this address with all institutions except for DMV. They have my old physical address, the one that's still on my valid DL. Unfortunately, I read somewhere that DMV might also be involved in this epic mess... :-( Let' hope not...
Thanks for your wonderful video. I have a question. I live in Taiwan, and I would like to know how to create my Social Security account. I understand that the system does not allow foreign addresses to be entered. Could you please tell me how to create my account using a Taiwan address? Thank you in advance, and have a wonderful day.
Nat - Thanks for this comment. I’ve actually thought of doing a video on that topic, so I feel ya. If your account was created prior Sept 18 2021, then you’ll just need to click the link that says Forgot Username. You can then put in the email address you used to create the account, your SSN, and your DOB. Then they will display your username. If you created your account after Sept 18 2021, and you set it up through Login.gov…the username is your email address.
Just answer NO to that question and proceed. That would be for someone who was mailed an activation code by SSA when they weren't able to create the account on their first attempt.
I think the example you mentioned is the reason to create an account now. This will enable you to look at your Social Security retirement statement to see your potential future benefit (in today's dollars), as well as play around with the retirement calculator tool on there.
Are you referring to the "re-entry #" provided partway through the application for benefits? If so, that has no connection to logging into your SSA account. You will login to your SSA account using Login.gov or ID.me. Then you will get a text or email with a security code to access your account. You will do this each time you login. Once you're in, you should be able to see a partially completed application that hasn't submitted. Click on that to access and complete.
The account is for your sister, so it would be her account. Whoever is "creating" the account and typing in the details for the person in question, is another thing.
Can somebody answer this? On older videos to create an SSA account, the form asks for driver's license information and they also prompt you to create a username. On the newer tutorials like this one, you say the procedure is different now. They don't require a username anymore, correct? So when I log into my account, I will only enter my e-mail address or real name? What would I enter other than my password?
A username is definitely required. Your username in the new process (via Login.gov) is the email address you choose. And then you absolutely will enter a password. Then follow the steps in the video to connect the Login.gov account to SSA.gov.
My wife isn't so computer literate and so I'm wondering if I can use my gmail account to create an account with SS, I also use this for my account but I created mine many years ago. Thanks. If you created your account years ago under the old login setup, then you should be able to use that same email address in the new system (via login.gov) for your spouse. But worst case, create a gmail account for her really quick and use that for her account creation. I agree, it can get tricky when you don't live in the US. Hopefully you can get some clear guidance during your upcoming phone appointment with SSA. :)
@@MedicareMindset A little update for those that live overseas. We had our US Embassy SS branch phone interview today and it went great! they approved my wife and are emailing me a letter or document that will allow us to open up a Philippine bank Direct Deposit account. @@andystamas I did that, pressed no and it takes me right back to filling out the info, name, ss# etc. afterwards I hit next and it goes right back to the same issue. Tell me if you requested a activation code..No I did not.
Definitely. Since you already have the Login.gov account, you'll put in those credentials to get started. Then the system will allow you to give approval to connect SSA.gov to your Login.gov account. So your SSA.gov account creation will be a little bit abbreviated, since you already got one part of this done.
I created an account for my mom. It said it will send me the activation code via mail and should take 1 week. It's been 1 week and we didn't get anything in the mail. Is there anyway to check the status of this mail?
That's a tough one. I think you'll need to call SSA at 800-772-1213 to get a recommendation on how to setup the account in this case. With you being outside the US and not having a US number, I can't think of another way to do this. I hope you're able to get it worked out.
He left out one step the activation code it will have to be mail to you are you will have to go to your nearest SSA office to retrieved it in order to compete the setup process.
The additional activation code that comes via US Mail does not happen every time. At around 01:25, I mentioned this possibility of needing an activation code to finish up the account creation.
Attempting to set us my social security account turned out to be a bad joke. First it wouldn’t allow me to use my Verizon cell phone number because it said that number was “web based VOIP phone service”. Whatever the hell that means. I mean if a Verizon phone is ineligible it’s no wonder why so few eligible people have created an account. Since my iPad has a separate number I tried again using that number but never received the message with the number required to complete my account creation. So I gave up, poured a drink, and was glad that I’m old enough to still get the annual paper statement.
That is frustrating. Sometimes you can enter everything correctly, and their system will still have an issue. You will have to contact SSA directly to get it worked out.
Since I live abroad and it's absolutely crucial to me to set up this mess, now that everybody is being forced and driven insane to do it the "new" and super-duper "easy" way, I'm trying to get as much info as possible. I read that the SSA, allegedly, still "currently" mails the annual statements to people over 60. Judging by your comment, it appears to be true, at least for now... Is that still the case and does it apply only to 60+? I have to use Google Voice now (which IS VOIP, even though I ported my AT&T number to it) and I came across a thread stating that login.gov does send text messages to GV or at least did 3 months ago. Hopefully, it does... Btw, if you feel like dealing with this again, you can create a GV number for free and try that.
@@MedicareMindset And sit on hold for 90 minutes? No thank you. I think I will make a visit to the local field office and raise some stink, if push comes to shove.

I lost access to my email, and I don't remember the password for the log.gov account, so I'm screwed. I have been trying to get back in, but it's impossible. Great video to set up everything as a new user.
Here's a question...I created an account after September 2021, this year as a matter of fact. I used the Login.gov option to create the account. Due to my son being recently awarded SSI (02/01/2023) and being his full time parent, I'm now needing to use the Representative Payee Portal and I'm told that option should automatically pop up to select my account or the rep payee account. However, from the rep payee portal page, if I just simply sign in it only takes me to my account and doesn't give me the option to select the rep payee account... What's going on here ? Is this because of the 3rd party sign-in process or because I'm not yet listed as his payee or the SSA is processing a payee review I'm waiting on or what ?
Thank you for this video. I am beside myself with frustration over trying to log into my SS.

@@waynekaminski5438 That certainly would be nice, but SSA can barely staff their local offices with employees. They likely don't prioritize making tutorial videos.
Can you go back add extra layers of security such as a drivers license later in the proces?. I skipped this step and now I cannot figure out how to get back there.
Thanks for this. EZ. Hey, you have a great voice!
Hi’ is there a cheaat sheet that I can download load, with website and steps,?
Not that I'm aware of...but my video is basically the cheat sheet.
I am retired and collecting SS. I enrolled on Part A only on 65th birthday (3/2020) and have been on my wife's insurance (company over 20 employees) for about 8 years. I now wany to enroll and Part B and buy Parts D and G. When is the enrollment period using the SEP rule? I would like to start the full Medicare program within the next 3 months if possible. Thanks for your help.
This was very helpful to refer to in helping a client set up an account over the phone.
Glad to hear it's been helpful for you and your clients!
Doesn't work. It gets stuck on verifying the information I gave it. Gave up after nearly an hour of waiting.
I have witnesses n my receipt showing when I arrived n my ticket number I was at office on Dec 4 2023 my concern is in my account under social security several days about a week has since went by and I was shocked to see an invalid account still sitting in my account Do I need to update the new chime account or I thought the man I spoke to last did
I was advised Dec 29 I will get Dec n Jan income but now I'm since receiving a letter stating Dec 4 I waived attendance of payee something , and that's the day I was at my local office but I wasn't there concerning what there implying . What can I do
That's frustrating indeed. It sounds like you're doing all the right things. If you updated your direct deposit information either in-person or through your SSA.gov account, it will eventually get updated. But SSA can be really slow sometimes.
Definitely stay on top of it and watch closely for updates.
What if the email you used to make the account and know longer know the account
I believe you can create a login.gov account with the new email address and then tie that login to your SSA account. If you get stuck, Login.gov has 24/7 support at 844-875-6446.
Thank you for your video. It is very helpful.
I cant get through it :( always says not match
Sorry you're having trouble. If your info doesn't match their system, then it should stop the process and mention that they will send you an activation code by mail to fix the issue and bypass the problem later on.
Me too! What part on my name, SS number and birthdate does it not get. I am not lying!
Can you, answer the REASON, this is being done? Why do they need to know about our credit?
Not sure why it's taking you down that path. Many years ago, you had to answer credit history questions to create an account, but not anymore. Again, not sure why you've been presented with those kinds of questions.
I am in Thaiand and I am not able to set up an account..............The page will not load. Any ideas ? Thanks.
@@medshow3 Yeah, it sounds like an internet connection issue.
Some, mostly government, sites don't work when detecting a foreign IP. SSA's main page does show up, but I don't recall if I actually used it before without a VPN. I think problems like yours can be solved with a VPN on, with a US server selected, ideally close to where you used to live.
hello thank you, in my case it says ¨ we cannot verify your information you provide , i already check that it 's correct
Yeah, sometimes you can put in all the information correctly...but there is some sort of data mismatch in their system. You'll need to contact SSA directly by phone to bypass this issue to create the account.
What happen if i only have one name, how i can make account?
Hi Yo - I apologize for the delay in responding. I thought I replied already, but apparently didn't. That is a very good question. Unfortunately, you might need to speak with SSA at 800-772-1213 to get confirmation on how to create an account when the system will require a first and last name. Let me know what you find out. I'm very curious what the workaround is. Thanks!
Hello, what if i have two middle names? How do i go about it because the middle initials allows for only one letter
Pamela - That's a really good question that we don't know the answer to. I think it would be best for you to call SSA at 800-772-1213. And please jump back on here and let me know what you find out. It will be extremely helpful information to pass along to folks. Thanks!
what do I put in Suffix?
This is shown in our video. Watch it all. Pretty much at the very end of the account creation process is a page that is titled, "Tell us who you are". That's where you enter your name, including a suffix (if applicable).
Thanks for the video. When I applied, it stated that it would send me a standard mail with an activation code. However, you showed that you got access right away...weird.
Hi there. An activation code would be sent if there was a data mismatch. So when you get it, you’ll finish setting up your account using the activation code option.
Hi, I am in the same situation. How long did you wait for it?
@@gin6195 You should expect it by mail within 1-2 weeks. Though, I have heard of folks never getting the code. So if it doesn’t arrive, you’ll probably need to restart the process.
@@andystamas Hello, does this mean the social security account has been accessed by someone else before? I had the same problem
@@americano2000 No, it means something isn't matching up right in their system and/or they need to verify your identity. You can request the code to be sent by mail and then pick-up the process with that code to finish creating the account. Good luck!
How to I set up my grandsons account with mine he is 4 and I’m his caregiver
A very good question. We specialize in Medicare insurance planning. Not sure about setting up an account for a child. I don't think it would be needed at age 4.
How to open my social security account outside of USA?
Jon - Please contact SSA at 800-772-1213 for assistance. However, what I've heard people do is use a family member's mailing address on the application for where the activation code and account creation updates are sent.
I don't see option to recieve activation by phone text, it only sent via mail. Why is this?
The initial step at the very beginning does send an email to start the Login.gov process. But later on, you choose whether it's a phone call or text message to receive the codes. But hey, as long as you get the code, then you're in good shape.
I tried to get activation code. After I put all the information inside, it says i already have an account. I have problem to log in
That means you already have a SSA.gov account (either through the old way, or via Login.gov or ID.me).
What to do if you don't know your 16 digit authentication and don't have the number on file anymore because it was from a long time ago
Go through the password reset process.
Does social security use your drivers license to verify address? What if someone has a drivers license in Florida and a state ID in Illinois?
That's an interesting scenario. I believe they use the address that you have on file with the credit bureaus.
@@MedicareMindset
Since I live abroad and have a US virtual mailbox, that's what I was hoping for because I've changed my mailing address to this address with all institutions except for DMV.
There is not a single TH-cam video about SS Account login that shows you how to retrieve my username?
Nat - Thanks for this comment. I’ve actually thought of doing a video on that topic, so I feel ya. If your account was created prior Sept 18 2021, then you’ll just need to click the link that says Forgot Username. You can then put in the email address you used to create the account, your SSN, and your DOB. Then they will display your username.
If you created your account after Sept 18 2021, and you set it up through Login.gov…the username is your email address.
Thank you very much.
@@andystamas I just tried this and got this response "We do not accept email addresses as a username"?
@@natshain7746 You tried which scenario? Old way or via Login.gov?
@@andystamas Yes I did (thank you Andy for the quick response).
Thank you! Very clear and helpful.
Great!
Why does it ask me for an activation code ?
Just answer NO to that question and proceed. That would be for someone who was mailed an activation code by SSA when they weren't able to create the account on their first attempt.
Is this what people use to see ssi and disability payments and benefits
Yes, you could see that information as well.
Is there a benefit of creating an account even though I'm far from the retirement age? I was just curious to know how much I'd be getting.
I think the example you mentioned is the reason to create an account now. This will enable you to look at your Social Security retirement statement to see your potential future benefit (in today's dollars), as well as play around with the retirement calculator tool on there.
What if you live in Mexico?
From what we've heard, setting up the account via ID.me works better for folks living abroad.
I did not write down the re-entry code and I cannot get into my account
Are you referring to the "re-entry #" provided partway through the application for benefits? If so, that has no connection to logging into your SSA account.
You will login to your SSA account using Login.gov or ID.me. Then you will get a text or email with a security code to access your account. You will do this each time you login.
Once you're in, you should be able to see a partially completed application that hasn't submitted. Click on that to access and complete.
I’m the payee and my sister is the beneficiary
So who’s gonna make the account to update the representative payee report
Me or her
The account is for your sister, so it would be her account. Whoever is "creating" the account and typing in the details for the person in question, is another thing.
@@MedicareMindset thank u 🙏🏼
We live in the Philippines, I am getting a phone interview tomorrow so I'll just wait on that for more guidance, I sure wish there was information on those of us that retired to another country. Helpful video for sure, I didn't want to start the process without watching something on this and your video was good.
The negative was that it took 75 days to get this interview lol. The other negative is the many requirements required to open a bank account in the Philippines at least two valid IDs required, my wife has only one valid ID card, we've been living overseas for a couple decades.
@@brend_piaka That's great news. Thanks for the update. Did they provide any guidance on how to setup a My Social Security account?
@@MedicareMindset I'm still waiting for this letter or document so far they haven't emailed it to me yet. Good question though because then my next hurdle will be taxes and needing to download a copy of my wifes Social Security pension.
My main concern was getting stuck having to verify by phone so I'm happy that I went the route of an interview, another expat living here from the US told me not to do the online SS form but to wait for the phone interview, I might be talking with him this Friday and I'll see how he sets up the SS online account for his wife.
I made an account with SSA and logged in with login ID but it keeps saying Tell us if you requested an activation code.. no I did not request it. I deleted the account and started over again multiple times and every time I log in it keeps telling me the same "Tell us if you requested activation code"... HELP
Assuming we're talking about the same spot of the process, it gives you the choice to answer Yes or No to that question. If you don't have an activation code or didn't request one, then click NO...and move on by clicking Next.
@@andystamas I did that, pressed no and it takes me right back to filling out the info, name, ss# etc. afterwards I hit next and it goes right back to the same issue. Tell me if you requested a activation code..No I did not.
If I have a login.gov account, can I also set up a mysocialsecurity account / log in?
Not that I'm aware of, but I would wait a little longer. Typically, this takes longer than a week.
Excellent video. Very helpful. Thank you!
I just signed up and got an email from ssa saying it'll take 5-10 days for the code is it normal to take that long
If they can't verify your identify instantly, then they mail the code to you. The normal turnaround on this is usually 2-3 weeks.
I am in dire need of your helping treating my social security
Hi there. Can you please clarify what it is you need specifically? Thanks.
What of persons who worked in U.S and wish you open account but living outside U.S who doesn't have U.S phone nunber?
That's a tough one. I think you'll need to call SSA at 800-772-1213 to get a recommendation on how to setup the account in this case. With you being outside the US and not having a US number, I can't think of another way to do this. I hope you're able to get it worked out.
He left out one step the activation code it will have to be mail to you are you will have to go to your nearest SSA office to retrieved it in order to compete the setup process.
The additional activation code that comes via US Mail does not happen every time. At around 01:25, I mentioned this possibility of needing an activation code to finish up the account creation.
Thank you very much.
Can you please increase the so.i can read better
Thank you
Attempting to set us my social security account turned out to be a bad joke.
@Xtreme_tech4_ on insta Great! Can you please share what you did to get this problem resolved? Thanks.
@Xtreme_tech4_ on insta Gotcha! Yes, I agree...calling SSA would be the only route to fix an issue like that. Thanks for sharing! :)

I am sorry, I am at the end of my wits, and the social security people will not help me. All she said is that she unlocked my account, and that is all she is willing to do ,which will not help without a username.
It needs the activation code to be able to ...😊 I know what happened
The whole verification has me running in circles, and ssa will not help!
