I'm going to leave a pinned comment here with regards to the voice-over for the male scammer used in this video. I want to provide complete transparency of the process involved and some clarity on the actor himself.
The persons voice is not Bens. It is a professional voice actor from the Philippines. I took my time in hiring a voice actor for that role - I actually rejected another voice actors work after paying them because I deemed their rendition to be very racist.
I sent all of my potential voice actors a brief - informing them of what the video was about and some background on the characters they would play - the key points were of course that the scammers were not native English speakers. This was an important requirement as I needed to make the spoken text feel organic, as a lot of it was broken English and had typos. I ended up editing out all of the spelling typos because, against the rest of the text in the video they simply looked like errors in the editing. I originally gave the voice actors the option to pronounce the typos - but they chose not to, so it made no sense keeping them in.
The specific style of voice that can be heard in the video is one that this voice actor actually advertises to potential clients on Fiverr. His voice style in this video does not differ in any way from the voice style he publicly advertises. This actor was the only person I found that could deliver me a dark tone for what I needed. He was really excited to work with me and I would potentially work with him on another projects in the future. My main point here is that the voice you hear is not someone "putting on" an accent. It's his native accent that he has personally chosen to make dramatic. Its extremely interesting that people are perceiving a man's native accent as a racist accent. That's a conversation to probably have right there.
Please know that this is something I took a lot of time deliberating and referred to my peers on TH-cam for a second opinion whilst the video was in development and again, I flat out rejected some voice actors because I deemed their work as racist. Pams Pretty Plants heard these audio files and saw the briefs so she can attest to all of this.
From the heart- the last thing I want to be is racist.
I hope this provides some clarity for anyone concerned or offended. I am also happy to discuss this within this thread.
I'm not surprised that folks found something else to complain about, since they obviously had nothing intelligent to add to the real topic. I appreciate all the hard work you put into this film, and all the knowledge you've shared. 💛

I'd recommend just looking at places that sell bulbs moreso than houseplants. I find that for bulb plants (like collocasia and caladium) it's better to buy from a place that sells annual bulbs than from a place that sells them as houseplants (and marks them up x4)

I agree. I found it a little slow and I had to skip through a lot of it to get to the point. I still wanted to watch for the education, but there were a lot of dramatic pauses that lasted a bit too long for me.

There was a girl in one of my Facebook groups showing off pictures of the new pink congo she had just bought online. I commented letting her know she should do alittle research and someone else commented sending her to your original video. Thankfully I think she was able to cancel her order and get a refund.

This reminds me in a way of a video that Summer Rayne Oakes did about critically endangered cacti being poached from the wild. I have mad respect for both of you for being so knowledgeable, honest, and always prioritizing environmentally and socially ethical practices over any possible personal gain. I've been an avid plant parent for 10 years and have more than tripled my plant knowledge--and my knowledge of the way the plant market can affect the environment and customers if you're not careful--just within the past few months of finding these videos. Thank you so much for everything you bring to the table. Also... the mere thought of whatever chemical they use makes me want to barf. Anyone who doesn't respect the environment has no goddamn place making a living off of it.

Kaylee Ellen, I have an idea of what the plant community could do but I am interested in what you and others think about this. I have an eBay and Etsy account and have bought plenty of things over the years, but I'm not a seller. As a form of activism for this sort of scam, would it help if some of us that want to bring attention to this sort of scam by producing listings that are informative? There wouldn't have to be anything sold, just listings that have the taglines to get attention and then issue warnings about the purchase of these specific plants. If enough people would contribute to these sorts of scams, maybe there could be pressure added to the sellers to make full disclosure as to what they are selling and get those prices down for anyone that wants to buy them for the temporary novelty. I know this won't work much for sales outside of these platforms and I wouldn't want anyone who is a plant seller to get caught in the crossfires of this if they use the platform. I don't know that I have anything to lose, however. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
YESSS SHE CAN MAKE A $0.25 listing to support this idea! All of her following my self included make it a #1 purchase in the plant buyers market on those retail sites! THEN when people search for these SCAMPLANTS the TRUTH will be the #1 thing an innocent buyer will see!!! I would SOOOO give her a quarter to make it a #1 PURCHASE so have newbies HUNDREDS and spread awareness. I can speak for others but I support this so much!!!
Not a half-bad idea. However, I would carefully read the terms and conditions of these platforms to ensure a listing of this sort would be legal within the confinements of the T&C.

Not all epileptics are photosensitive but for those of us who are it's so appreciated when people add these warnings. I may still have watched but the second it came on I could have fast forwarded through that bit without a focal seizure.
i agree! i dont get seizures but i do get headaches from flashing very easily so i was a little disappointed there wasnt a clear warning before each sequence of flashing

The QUALITY I can't! ❤️❤️❤️ Btw, the first ever pink Melanochrysum own by probably biggest, established nursery in Java island, Indonesia (Fachri Orchid). I know him because e-commerce always suggests me to his shop. He does own all the mother plants, so you don't have to Google the mature form of the plants by yourself.
It's a shame because he's a big player himself but doesn't even know, or being honest to the buyer. I'm so glad, that I never got into Pink congo, micans and dark lork even though I love pink so much!

I have seen Pink Congo's for sale online and just didn't have a good feeling about it, maybe because none of the TH-camrs(like you) I watch ever had one, and didn't talk about any experience with them either. I just saw someone purchase a pink birkin in a plant store in North Carolina and I had the first thought that it was another pink congo. People stop buying without knowing it’s real.

So awesome that you do this series! Thank you for caring so deeply about the houseplant community. Chemicals in plants has been happening for a while. It happens a lot with orchids. We bought one from a company called Just Add Ice and they inject the plant. This way the flowers show up a bight blue with hints of purple and pink. They didn't have anything written on the tag about the chemical injections but they did have information about it on their website
It still does happen a lot with some holiday-specific plants that you buy at the supermarket, but these have been going on for so long that pretty much everybody knows about it and is still willing to pay $20 to have a good-looking plant that'll last for a few months. I'm not against it as long as the seller is honest and doesn't overcharge for it being rare or special.
This is true with orchids my sister bought one thinking it's was deep purple. Next time it bloomed it was light pink 😭😳
The production and direction on this video is stunning. This would have been so easy to make just posting screenshots and doing a voice over or talking to the camera. I appreciate all the time and commitment put into this video

This is SO different from your usual video, I can see how it has been polarizing. But it’s amazing to see both of your talents coming together to create epic videos!! I for one am impressed with your video and editing skills, the timing with everything is spot on, and your voice over is so perfect; it’s soothing and calming somehow too!
