I was absolutely love these SUFI related videos, because it's helping me to uncover their way of thinking. my maternal great grandfather was a great sufi priest in bangladesh and the people of his village thought he had magical powers. as for my father side, when his father passed away, a sufi family took care of him and his big family, so he was surrounded by sufis his whole life. so i think this is why i'm naturally inclined to topics of spirituality and religion.
what i'm learning on this channel is the universality of mystical thinking. it seems that these men were very progressive with their ideas. it transcends time that even to this day, their thoughts are relatable. i just don't know if i'll ever be able to reach the spiritual fortitude and displicine to ever become a practicing sufi myself, but what i'm learning from these videos are helping me apply some of their ideas into my life in a gradual manner.
This is the type of content i've been looking for because it's not coming from a biased view. it's strictly academic so that i can formulate my own opinions in an objective way. so i thank you - please keep them coming.

I'm also impressed by your pronunciation of Arabic sounds, which I know doesn't come easily to Westerners. If I may just make one correction it would be to how you pronounce the name "Ishak". This is actually the Arabic version of the name Isaac (son of Abraham) and is pronounced Iss-h'aaq with an S sound, not SH. Wishing you great success and looking forward to your next videos.

I know, I adore that quote too! It's such a potent reminder of the idea that pure Reality cannot be expressed or understood through words or concepts.
Let's Talk Religion Only through a deep spiritual experience can the Pure Reality (Allah for me) and the realities of higher realms of existence be unlocked. And such experiences can hardly be put into words. Look at Prophet Mohamad’s experience of Israa and Meraj (الإسراء والمعراج) in the Quraan and how it was translated in a very symbolic language. The deeper realities of this experience as well as of other spiritual experiences are to be explored by those who choose the path of Mystics and Gnostics. Many Mystics remained silent throughout their entire lives, simply because what they witnessed is far greater and bigger than any words. Linguistics failed Mystics, because we are so limited before the limitless and the infinite, before Allah (or the Pure Reality whatever you choose to call it).

I have had the most profound and otherworldly experiences whilst on the Sufi path. I have tried to explain to many people but words fail me. Hi, Thanks for another great video. This is very useful for showing how diverse Islam is, and how the so-called "orthodoxy" is an illusion. Anyway, I think "Hermeticism" and the figure of Hermes Trismegistus are not fully explained in this video. I have heard about how Hermes and Hermeticism are influential during the medieval Islamic thought, as well as the European/Christian philosophical tradition. Hopes you can explain it more in the future.
Yes, I do only mention Hermeticism as if I assume the audience knows what that means, which might have been a bit naive of me. But I'll surely be talking about it more in future videos :)

@@LetsTalkReligion Yes, please. I have been waiting for someone to touch upon this subject. I don't think Hermeticism is often talked about especially its influence on religions. And especially less so with regards to Islam. Often, I tend to read about Greek / neoplatonic influence on Islamic philosophy but I thing Hermeticism has some interesting parallels with Islam, at least from what little I read about the former.
More often I think, Hermeticism is often identified with occult subjects than religion. But then again, wouldn't mysticism be considered as a kind of occult knowledge? Anyway, really eager for you to get to this . Really have been enjoying your work.
@@julinaonYT He (although it's quite likely he wasn't a real person) is very strongly associated with Alchemy in particular, not as much with "magic" or "sihr" which is commonly condemned in Islam. Alchemy and the Hermetic tradition in general has been very widespread and influential in the Islamic world. Hermes has even been identified as the prophet Idris which is mentioned in the Qu'ran, which shows you the reverence that many Muslim scholars have had towards him.
@@LetsTalkReligion depends its a bit muddle up. There are spectrums to hermitic thought that could be classifed sihr. Ahmad AL Buni discusses those aspects.
I'd love to see more of Ibn Sab'in. If you could go into the Sicilian Questions or the Budd al-Arif that would be amazing.

Where can I learn more about Ibn Sab'in and his teachings? I can only find references to books but no actual books to purchase. Perhaps you have a few suggestions to find ?
Buy the book A Muslim Suicide.
It was probably radical for those cultures. But it is something that people have been saying from times immemorial. Advaita Vedanta and Dzogchen Buddhism for instance.
One thing to note is that these are not just intellectual ideas for these mystics. It is the only reality.

Thanks for the video. But I didn't quite understand, what is Ibn Sabin's position of the Divine Names in being. Is there any reference you can point to expressing this. Would be great. Thanks.
Basically, he believed that ALL multiplicity must essentially be "passed over" or transcended to know God or Reality. This includes transcending and moving beyond the multiplicity of the Divine Names and only resting in the Oneness of the name "al-Haqq" (The Real).
If you check the Sources in the description to the video, I would recommend the article from the "Sufi Journal", it talks about some of these ideas in particular and compares it to the school of Ibn Arabi.

I saw the first episode, seemed like a very good show! I think he is very interesting and fascinating, and the little poetry I've read has been beautiful.
But my knowledge of him is very limited at the time, I haven't had the opportunity to dive into his life or works yet. Hopefully in the future :)

I have watched this video couple of times and ibn Arabi few times as well but what is difference between the two in laymen term?. Isn't it similar to panthesim
It has aspects that can remind us of pantheism, but it is also more complicated than that.
In very simple terms - they both agree that God is the only Reality, the only "thing" that really exists.
They disagree in the sense that Ibn Arabi still thinks the multiplicity of the world is RELATIVELY real and separated from God. Ibn Sab'in, however, sees the world and multiplicity as pure illusion and that God's Essence is immediately "knowable" everywhere.
It's hard to explain such complex metaphysics in easily understandable terms, but that's my best attempt :)

Greatest example that we know accur between Ibn Sina and Abu Said. Philosopher and Mystic. After being long time in seclusion Philosopher said He Sees what I Know, Mustic replied He Knows what I See. Those are Real Man in Divine Path that do not attack each other Path but Saw it as Allah Blessing on them.
I've heard that story before. It is a position many of the philosophers would agree with, maybe Ibn Sab'in too.

How influential do you think "ethnic" spaniards were during muslim rule in Iberia? I have been introduced to a somewhat "nationalistic" perspective, of a generic arab conquest. But there are many idiosyncracies that seem to hint at a more complex picture of an almost "Spanish Islam".

Where is the English translation of the Sicilian Questions?
I've been trying to find the answer to this question all day, but I've reached the conclusion that I might have been mistaken in the video. I was absolutely sure there was an English translation when I wrote the script, but I think what I meant to say was that it is the only text that has been translated into European languages. It seems to be available in Spanish and Italian, but not English. Sorry for the confusion.

He proclaimed himself a prophet and I was wondering, seeing as it's up your alley of interest, that you could make a video about this? The Berber people also did something interesting as well, they began to recite the shahadda in their Berber language as well as a whole slew of un orthodox "muslim" things and I was wondering if you've heard of this before?

Let's Talk Religion yeah it's heavily intertwined into Berber nationalism in the Maghreb, which is still a problem today because of discrimination. Their women don't wear the hijab because traditional berberism give a lot of rights to women, like being the one who decides to divorce and even being warriors! But yeah, this guy, ibn tarif is epitome of how nationalistic the Berber folk are and how that nationalism still affects their Islam today.

I read the kybalion which is about the principles of hermes before i knew any of this and i though it correlated with islam completely so it makes sense that many muslims were hermetic.

Could you please make a video on punishments in sharia and why countries introduce them like Malaysia or Brunei (flogging or death penalty for homosexuality). I've read that some punishments are specified in the Quran and some in the hadith. I can't really wrap my head around how jurists come to their conclusions. I know there is a diversity of thought quranists, salafists. I wonder how people can interpret flogging and amputation in the Quran....

Have you done a video on the thinker René Guénon of the Traditionalist School? He studied Hinduism and converted to Islam, ultimately becoming an Egyptian citizen and a Sufi. Perhaps he doesn't fit your "Making the Muslim World" series, but his life and thoughts might make an interesting video topic for a later time.
On a side note, hearing Arabic with a Swedish accent is surprisingly enjoyable lol

It takes place in God’s knowledge.
You can also say what you said about Ibn Taimiyyah to Iraneaus and other church fathers. Most of the people they accuse are very interesting to study and learn about.

Do you think the Andalucian Sufis like ibn Arabi, and Ibn Sabain, disprove the narrative or assumption that Sufism is foreign to Islam or just came from Persia? Or the tired dichotomy that Persians are mystical and Arabs are exoteric?
I think they could certainly be used for that argument.
Could you do a video on Al Biruni, on all his works including his philosophy ,mathematics, and his work on India? I’ve heard that he is sometimes called the father of comparative religion as ibn khaldun is the father of sociology. Since I think that’s your field, I think it would be pretty fitting to do Al Biruni

I think Ibn Arabi and Sab’in both are right and their views stand still. It is like 1 is a number and 2 is also a number. My opinion about negating everything will end up not praising god’s attribute/reflection? Absolute unity might contribute people to not integrate well in society? As they themselves deny everything. Instead we should identify god by seeing his attribute and reflection.
God has the answer , he said he is unique and nothing like him ..both ibn Arabi and sabiin trying to describe something that impossible
