I just started writing my Ph.D. on Islamic Andalusi mysticism (and its possible connections to Jewish Spanish Kabbalah), so I was especially happy to see a video addressing this topic. Thank you!
I thought Jewish and Islamic in Andalus more into Philosophical than Mysticism. Maybe there's little group there.
@@Acalmujannahmalaysia Philosophy was indeed very prominent in Andalus, but as discussed in this video there was an important mystical tradition in Andalusian Islam - beginning with Ibn Masarra and reaching its peak with Ibn Arabi, etc. A bit later, in the 13th century, a mystical stream in Judaism known as Kabbalah became widespread in the Christian kingdoms of northern Spain. That would be a very brief answer, but there is much more to say about this..
Good luck with the dissertation! Sounds like one I'd love to read!
I try too to connect jewish qabbalah to sufism is Spain, but in a very particular topic, I'lm al huruf. Here I heard that Ibn Massar wrote a book about Huruf and Propheties, and the jew Abou Lafia wrote on this topic too. Studying etymology of semitic languages, I came to the fact that each Harf has its own meaning, and understand why jewish and muslim "mysticism" said us that Al-3alamyn, the universe, was created with the Huruf.
@@victoremman4639 huruf means letter if im not wrong. At least that's what it mean in Indonesian bahasa. And this also proves my beliefs that god create this world just by command it with a letter or voice or just as it is. Its confusing but somehow makes sense to me.
I'm from Andalusia, I wish we learned more about that period in school. Great video, loved it.
Alice are you half Spanish and half Arab
@@anonymousdude5550no she is not! I bet she is manly Iberian and has some north African, not Arabs. Northern Africans where colonised by Arabs after many decades of fighting. But I guess Muslim invasion and colonisation is forgiven 🙄. The truth is they invaded and forced converted the Northern Africans ( Berber people) and then did the same to Iberian people!
@@veracorreia4579 Oooh look a Francoist who doesn't understand irony.
@@veracorreia4579arabs didnt forcefully convert north africans or iberians, infact there were pagans and even christians in north africa until the 11th century, and christians and jews had always existed in muslim iberia

In my family, here in Bosnia,we are traditionally Sufie's and dervishes ... You are really honoured to carry the DNA of some of the great Sufis. May Allaah 'azzawajal increase His bounties on you and your family.
Young man, you give this old lady hope for the future. I thank you.
I wonder what our world would look like if we took time to observe the wisdom and beauty in the words of those who came before us in every religion; instead of insisting on creating the wheel all over again in each generation.
Totally agree, if we coud just listen with empathy and realize the wonder of all the wisdom in all traditions, if we could rescue the teachings of all great mistics, sages and philosophers and stop just looking at the diference and puting together all this reachness, we could realy make a heaven in this world.
Very informative indeed -thorough research , presentation of a very complicated topic with good pronunciation all are excellent. Mashallah very nice .
I am writing you from Cordoba, Spain. I visited the Mezquita earlier today. This is an awe-aspiring edifice. Tomorrow, I go to Seville. Next week, to North Morocco. And in two weeks, back to the States. I was in Toledo and Granada in late 2021 and visited the Alhambra at that time. Your pictures brings back memories (even from earlier today!).
In Andalusia, the culture is highly influenced by their Islamic past as shown in their cuisine (e.g. paella), music (e.g. flamenco (with a heavy dose of Roma culture too)) and language. They celebrate ibn Arabi, ibn Rushd and ibn Maymun (Maimonides) in small ways and big. Andalusia is a magical place. I cannot imagine but that Sufism would make its mark on this land. Thanks, as always, for your videos.
OH MY GOD I WAS LITERALLY JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS TOPIC AS YOU BROUGHT UP THE DISTINCT MYSTICAL TRADITION OF THE ISLAMIC WEST IN YOUR ALSHUSTARI VIDEO. I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES BETWENE THE WESTERN AND EASTERN MYSTICAL TRADITIONS AND LO AND BEHOLD YOU JUST MADE A VIDEO ON IT GOD BLESS YOU BRO
I’ve learned more about Islam in the last 26 minutes than I did in my public education in the United States. Thank you.
Try reading islamic books is best way to learn about islam
@@alhashmy1310 some socalled Islamic books are full of falsehoods and inaccuracies. Now every fool sees himself as the spokesman of Islam which caused some moslems that I KNOW to recant and reject Islam altogether. You could have directed him to read the Koran, forget about the ignorants and their stupid books.
Public School education is not designed to teach religion or philosophy, so that it remains neutral in the spirit of separation of church and state secularism.
Aren't you going alittle overboard?
This is not about Islam. IN fact, Sufism is not recognized in Islam and the Sufis would get executed at different time!
Here in America we have a LOT to learn about Islam, doing the good work by spreading understanding even in your small way
Don’t extrapolate your ignorance to all of America. That said, this channel is awesome.
It's not only America - even within the Islamic World, due to historical, political reasons and due to certain movements, people have, especially in context of Tasawwuf, absolutely no idea of these subjects.
Vast majority of muslims don't really understand islam in true sense of the manner.
Islam has been misrepresented from within and without, because no one has an instant understanding of it.
سوفي صوفي
Which one is Sufi and which one means wool?
Islamic mysticism is so great, so intuitive and conected to nature. The idea of the Universe or Nature as a Cosmic Quoran remind me thinkers as Spinoza or hindu mistics as Shankara. Great video.
I have been living in Granada the last 3+ years. there's so much history here ♥
I was in Sevilla, Carmona , Granada and Cordoba in 2001, 4 months before 9/11. My ancestral lands on me pops side. Spain is a nation of nations indeed. Galicia, Celtic and Barcelona , Occitan, if we name it in linguistic terms. Enjoy and say a prayer for the Kozmic Koala, I wish I could be there and not trapped in NYC.💚
Being myself and roughly all my forebears from Andalucía, it is a true honor you've put the energy and effort to study our mystic history. Thank you man🙏🏻💪
This was one of the most interesting videos you made on the topic. I am very interested in that particular geographical, historical and spiritual area. Please keep up the talk on Andaluzian topics both in history, music and spritual tradition. Thank you so much for your work.
Thank you so much for these videos on mysticism. I'm from Portugal and, although born Catholic Christian, both my parents had throughout my early years taught me various mystical concepts that they referred to as Kabballistic and I've always been passively curious.
In seeing your video on the teachings of Al-Arabi and this video on Andalucian mysticism I can see many origins of my beliefs, early teachings and culture within Islam, which is fascinating to me.
In doing so you have completely changed my perspective on the Islamic faith, and have helped me gain access to so many vibrant religious perspectives.
Thank you, and I wish you the best.
Islam in the west (Hispania and Roman Mauretania) has always been very different from that in the east.
It's rather traditional, yet very spiritual. And not political. A religion of saints and almost shamanic way.
Tak so mycket -- gracias Filip. So deeply appreciated this session -- and your work in general. Blessings from Bolivia.
An amazing presentation. I was unaware of this topic but it is synchronous with my own life in contemplation of self, world and the Divine. It's always gratifying to find traditions that correlate with my own "tradition' of self enquiry. Thank you!
Sufism essentially revolves around the teachings of the Quran. And Quran mostly talks about the primordial nature of man. i.e Fitra.
i gotta admit, i am not a practical religious person, nor theorethical for that matter but the way you present some old forgotten ideas is very refreshing and immersive and you make it actual again, at least for me. thank you for that
You explained our history million times better than our history book 📖 😢, im really glad that i subscribed to you
That's untrue. You're just poorly researched.

@Jenny Berg I meant history book at school, I was shocked when I knew about ibn arabi I wish I knew him earlier in my life
@@goldentome7653 Its never too late. On a cautionary note, you can never know Ibn Arabi. Consider yourself lucky if you think if you have bare minimum understanding of him. And that's a universal consensus about Ibn Arabi.

The photography of these lands and art has great beauty. ❤
Thank you so much for producing this video (and all your others!). I'm in the second year of a masters programme in Islamic studies and history and you have been able to perfectly clarify for me in 27 minutes aspects of Islamic intellectual history that I have been struggling to fully grasp for months.
You have taught me so much about Islam. Live in Nordic countries, but spend some time in Andalusia regularly.. i knew some of this, but wow, thanks!
There's so much knowledge in these Islam vids!!! I must take notes to be able to explore further that which intrigues me especially regarding al-Andaluse. Your vids are great for releiving the pain of ignorance. And helping to bring world peace. Many blessings for a more peaceful and compassionate world. 🦋💙
I am from a town in the province of Córdoba and I am devouring texts by Hildegard von Bingen, buddhism and hinduism, European occultism like by Eliphas Levi, etc. but I never realised that I am much closer to these philosophers that you describe in the video than to them. Thank you for bringing this to me and to my spiritual developement. I am actually connecting all streams of spirituality from many different cultures and seeing that most of them say the same things in different ways. That makes me ‘confused’ because I don’t know what to follow but I guess by now my path is continuing until I see clearly what speaks to me, even if it’s many different voices with the same intention ✨♥️
Filip, this is so timely as I have recently found so much within my study of later Sufis thru the writings of Corbin. I just got a copy of Annemarie Schimmel’s MYSTICAL DIMENSIONS OF ISLAM which this video is an awesome complement to. Thanks so much!
This interesting book -The Mystical Diemnsions of Islam is an eye-opener. I have read the book more than three times, and still do refer to it when necessary. The author, Annemarie Schimmel is a brilliant scholar.

That's funny: two weeks ago, while strolling in narrow alleys of old Córdoba, I came across the Nematollahi sufi centre. I immediately thought that you should make a video about Andalusian Sufism. An accident? I don't think so… ;)
Didn't know the Ni'matullahi order had a presence in Cordoba! Wish I knew that when I visited last month. It is in the old city, you say?
That’s truly amazing. Can you think that I should get a million dollars.😊 Just joking.
You got hit with and experienced what is called Tawajjuh. EL Ahkbar ya'sami' Kalim a'qul Alhumdulilahh

Very thankful for this channel existing. I feel like it is doing a lot to bring more understanding to religions for both followers of the faith and other people who wish to learn. If there is anything that is an antidote to all the division and bigotry that we see in the world I feel as though it is channels like this that will help people to develop more sensitive and nuanced ideas.
❤ Love your comment. Agree!
Thank you!
thank you so much for your efforts here....Sufic mysticism has always resonated with myself....I have always believed, and practiced the contemplation of nature as proof of God's existence....I was privileged to have studied under Mrs. Annie Lou Stavely here in Oregon when she was still living who studied directly under Mr. Gurdjieff in 1948 until his death. Meeting one's spiritual teacher on the astral plain, through dreams, is an experience all of us can have, I believe, meeting a master who can point you to God, and help one to develop one's own individuation of God. Thank you again, your spirit shines through the work of your video presentations.
Thank you once again and appreciate the time and effort for researching the subject and making this beautiful presentation. Also would like to recommend making a video on meditating techniques used by different Sufi orders. Like example use of breath, music, lucid dreaming meditation, verbal remembrance etc.
I've been watching your channel for awhile and i felt that i have to thank you. your videos helped me discover a completely different side of religious thinking and its helping me a lot on my own way of self discovery. as someone who lives in the meeting point of the three abrahamic religions, i truly believe that by being open minded and watching content like yours we will be able to understand that we all express the same love of god but in different ways. please never stop doing what you are doing my friend.

Another brilliant video! I had no idea these distinctions existed. I do believe that throughout time Mystics have seen through the veils of religions & cultural differences & recognized the one truth realized at the culmination of their diverse paths. Paths which lead to no path at all.

I was wondering if you could consider making a video on Khorasani Tasawwuf with notable figures like Sanai, Attar, Ahmad e Jam, Abdullah Ansari, and possibly Rumi. Sir this is really a good information about Sufism.
I think u work hard about this subject.👍
Excellent indepth video ,shukran
Woah, I'm so much into mysticism !
Sufism is easy to define. It is one of the many Islamic sciences that deepens one's faith, experience and knowledge about God. It leads to unity with God while physically alive. It is mystical in that it has inner experiences that others may not perceive, the practices are traditional mystical practices (ex. prayers, fasting, etc.) and there are metaphysical realities that go beyond the physical senses.
It's actually easier than that. There is no journey or path its actually right here there then was is going to be and now when every cell of your body is doing zhikr and its just HU.......................................
What a sublime explanation of Sufism!
More of a curiosity than a suggestion for a video: Sicily was part of the Islamic world for more than two centuries, but it is a little know part of Italian history. Was there any significant thinker from that era?
It goes without saying, stellar channel!
Peace be to you! What an AMAZING video! I listened to this on my way to work. What's your academic background? The way you speak, coupled with your video editing, makes your videos so engaging. Keep up the great work you are doing! 🙂👋🏽👨🏽⚕️

another classic episode lets go!
You're doing a great job there 👏
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste

Thank you for this informative video!
Did you know about Sufis in Bosnia and Herzegovina? It might be interesting topic in some future videos. There is historical record that islam and sufism came to Bosnia from al Andalus, so there is great connection. Thank you once more for insightful content.
Of course! Plenty of stuff to talk about there
This goes to show that where-ever Islam went, mystical and introspective traditions arose, along with legal schools of thought. People think that the later is 'integral' to Islam, whereas the former is 'accidental'. But the parallell traditions with mysticism in the different islamic lands in the early centuries proves otherwise. The choice of using tasawwuf as a broader term of mysticism, is analogous with the using of universal terms fiqh kalaam etc to denote different traditions that tend to similiar principles and aims.
Tack så mycket för din givande forskning i detta ämne! 😊
There are many cultures that have extensive history of religious introspection long before Islam was even formalized. If anything the muslim mystics' concepts like wahdat al-wujud were most likely inspired by Hindu texts. Also legalism as a philosophy started a lot earlier in China. This goes to show you shouldnt take things only within the context of your own culture.
@@ramanmonkey That religioms have similar aspects or teachings doesn't negate history. When I wrote legalism I meant an attitude and not a tradition or a school of thought. A similar idea or principle can be expressed in different cultures at different times
@@salmaabdullahielmi6182 then I wouldnt attribute those ideas to Islam solely.. clearly Muslim mystics were influenced by those around them. If you finished the video he even clearly states most of these concepts came from eastern sufi thinkers which geographically is where Hinduism and Buddhism come from. I am talking history without bias.
@@ramanmonkey As I stated, similiar concept have arisen in many cultures and civilisations. Mysticism or monistic philosophy isn't unique to Islam, nor to Buddhism or Hinduism, it has arisen and been expressed in Ancient Egypt, Iran, China even in Native American cultures. For us muslims it is not a strange thing since God is one and has revealed himself to people through the prophets of the world and saints.
I am myself a student of the history of religion for many years. For instance Alhcemy arose independently in Egypt India and China without much evidence of exchange, same is for mathematics, astronomy, agriculture. Similiar things arose often times independently form each other in different parts of the world. That two concept are similiar, for instance the monistic philosophy and metaphysics of Andalusia and in India isn't its self a proof of historical exchange. For historian there must be proof of actually textual, institutional, social interaction between different groups and traditions to claim positive exchange. That can't be argued for Andalusian metaphysics and Hindu metaphysics. It can perhaps be argued for the muslim philosophical traditions that fostered in India where there is proof of exchange between for instance sufis and yogis, but even there that isn't clear cut since many of the definitive character of Islamic-Indian philosophy was developed long before the establishment of islam and sufism in India.
It must be shown what texts where in circulation in the middle ages in order to show exchange. As far as my knowlegde goes the sanskrit texts translated into Arabic or Persian in the early period where mostly texts in mathematics, astronomy and even some collections of stories and fables. Sections of the great sanskrit corpus of the Vedas were not translated into Arabic or persian before the establishment of muslims in the subcontinent in the late middle ages. The first translation fi the Upanishads into Persian was by the prince of Dara Shikoh in the17th century, 700 years earlier the Persian Biruni wrote a great book of Indian culture in the 10th century and translated a treaties on Yoga. Obviously there where interactions between buddhist and Hindus and muslims in the centuries in between in places like Sundh, Central Asia, but it isn't enough to prove that muslims simply copied from others . The knowlegde of Indians tradition in its religious and spiritual scope enters into the Muslims societies mainly after muslils settle in India, which happened many centuries later than when the central teachings of Sufism were defined, for instance the teachings of Fanaa, Baqaa, Wahdat, Kashf.
My point with the original post was to point to a fault in those modernist who see Islam as mainly a legal religion, if that is so how do they explain numerous parallell traditions of mysticism that developed in all the lands that muslims settled in? That was my point and nothing else. Thanks.
@@ramanmonkey I did watch the whole video. He stated that Western mysticism (North Africa and Andalusia) in Islam was more philosophical whereas the mysticism of the Central and Eastern lands (Levant, Iraq and Greater Persia) was more psychological and ethical.
Sufi, what a great philosophy 👏 👌
