I was extremely sick for over a year and potassium is what fixed it. I'm infuriated doctors would gaslight me into thinking it was nothing when I was suffering so immensely. Muscles that wouldn't heal, constantly waking at night often with muscle convulsions and intense disorientation, terrible fatigue and brain fog, stomach issues. It got so bad at times my heart would start beating really hard and fast until I'd pass out, I'd go to the ER and they'd tell me it was simply a panic attack. After enough research I took a chance with potassium and saw almost immediate results. Now I mix potassium chloride in my water everyday. I worry there's some deeper issue causing my body to not hold onto the potassium, but I know my doctor won't take me seriously and probably tell me "generally we only see people in their 70s have potassium problems". But hell, I'm just grateful to be functional again.

It might not be just you. During our long developmental history, salt was expensive since it had to be ported from a seashore, so much so that it was sometimes used as currency. Potassium, plentiful in plants, was not dietarily significant. So our kidneys got good at excreting potassium and conserving sodium, and sodium salt to this day excels at tickling our taste buds.
Why is this so important? Young people can somehow cope with this imbalance (maybe not; illness is now rampant in our young) but for sure older "useless eaters" kidneys fail to rectify this imbalance. Since sodium/potassium depolarization is the key component of nerve and neuron conduction and muscle contraction, this imbalance shows up in a wide assortment of ailments.

@@Trini_soucouyant Windsor Iodized "Salt Free" Salt. Should be in the aisle with the salts and spices. Make sure you're getting enough sodium too if you're sweating a lot, because the body uses sodium up faster than potassium when you're very physically active, but typically we excrete potassium faster in daily life, and need more of it than sodium. You're going to want to be using magnesium supplements too, because that helps the potassium be utilized. Research electrolyte balance, and look into the risks of taking too much potassium, begin with a low amount and spread it through the day. You can use it on your food and it tastes similar to salt, but I just put it in my water, it's an acquired taste.

I get that people are so tired of doctors/nurses etc but remember! They are also humans they have alot of responsibility and they are absolutely forced to act and talk in a certain way even if they know it's wrong. Unfortunately being a doctor doesn't mean you can say and do whatever you want. You are not free. You are controlled. The cold truth is we need to educate ourselves when it comes to our health and not put everything in some one elses hands. I am not saying you are and I do understand what you mean.

This video was a life saver. I was strict carnivore way of eating for about 4 years. Many health benefits, until three months ago. I basically just ate red meat and eggs every day. And added salt to my meat and eggs. Things were working great and then I suddenly had a large painful cyst in my groin. I went to urgent care and I remember the doctor asking me if I was a diabetic. I said no, because I did not eat any sugars or carbs. That question should have raised a red flag. So he prescribed antibiotics and after about 10 days it went away. Never had this type of thing happen to me, so after it was over did not think much about it. But then a week later my lymph nodes in my lower neck and my thyroid swelled up and lasted for about three weeks. I went to the doctor about this and was asked if I had night sweats or fever, etc. None of that, no sore throat or anything. So they gave me a blood test and wow! my glucose level shot straight up, which I thought was weird because I did not eat fruit, sugars, or carbs, and what was more scary is that my red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels went below the minimum. My doctor suggested that I eat food with iron. I said, I eat nothing but red meat and eggs everyday, I'm getting a lot of iron, but for some reason my body is not absorbing it. So I was told to take some iron supplements and come back in three months for another blood test. Then the swelling went down in my next and as it went away something else happened. I started to lose a lot of weight without trying, I lost 10 pounds in about 2 weeks, and also started having cramps on the tops of my feet, which I never had before. Then in a few days I woke up one morning and my lower legs, ankles, and feet were really swelled up, just like Edema, but with none of the other symptoms of edema. So, I started looking up causes of Edema on you tube, and this video with others concerning Edema and potassium from Dr. Berg came up. So I started watching them and then it hit me, Potassium imbalance! I got some electrolyte powder and started taking a multivitamin and started eating green veggies right away. The next day the swelling went down. The second day, after repeating this, I woke up and the swelling was gone, but later in the day they swelled back up but not as bad. Third day, I woke up and no swelling and so far they not swelled up. 4 Years of strict Carnivore way of eating, and it created a severe Potassium imbalance in my body. So, now am going to add a healthy variety back into my diet and definitely drink Dr. Berg's electrolyte mix on a daily basis. Thank you for your videos!

We have to be careful about diagnosis from non-individualised piecemeal info... A High Blood sugar result can be caused by own body's high cortisol pumping out glucose when body is under stress eg infections. ( I had blood test as a virus was coming on, which resulted in a high reading and the pathology report suggesting Dr to query for diabetes risk. Level was back to normal next test...)Your other symptoms _blood count, low iron , sudden weight loss, cramps, and oedema are inconsistent with strict carnivore diet, and suggestive that advice is needed from an experienced carnivore Dr., or at least more testing to discount serious conditions. There is reason to feel challenged by these distressing symptoms, which makes it easy to jump to incorrect conclusions and time will tell. But to conclude there is need to "add a healthy variety back into my diet and definitely drink Dr. Berg's electrolyte mix on a daily basis" may simply be masking a condition for longer time... ( ps I would think the daily electrolytes would not be needed, if changing from strict carnivore and adding "variety back into my diet " ?)

@@Drakester300 RE: "...taking the electrolytes I have put 4 pounds back on"
This is very unusual, as you are indicating that weight gain occurred AFTER the excess fluid from edema was removed. This is not what electrolytes do , especially from potassium. Maybe the sweetener in them, stimulated you to eat more of carbs and gain fluid storage especially after leaving strict carnivore? There is insufficient info to guess, so I really urge that you need a full check up of your current status.

    • @Drakester300
      @Drakester300 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thetaijicentre9704 thanks for the replies. In my case, for some reason my red blood cells were not absorbing iron while on the carnivore diet. I believe because not enough Zinc and magnesium. I looked at my blood tests over the last four years and saw a steady decline in my red blood cell count. But the potassium in my blood was high. But the blood test they gave me when all this was happening to me, showed my red blood cell count dropping below the lower limit. Also, I would add that during the last year on the Carnivore diet, I had a lot of issues with cramps in my calves, feet, and stomach. Very painful, many times these would cramp up really bad during the night while I was sleeping. This could have cause the sudden weight loss and loss of strength. I was really weak. No matter how much I ate, I kept losing weight. However, since taking electrolytes in the right balance, I've been able to put weight back on. And my strength has returned. And I have no more cramping. For some reason on the Carnivore diet, it through my electrolytes off. Its just my own experience.

    • @ArrowBast
      @ArrowBast ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@Needless2say I guess that's likely because potassium imparts a stronger osmotic gradient than sodium does , but sodium has a stronger one than sugar. Coconuts evolved along salty shorelines rich in spray of sodium & chlorine , and the coconut avoids internal dessication by developing a husk rich in Potassium and Phosphorus, which prevents moisture loss for the seedling, else the sodium in sea water would dessicate it. Coconut husk ash is fairly alkaline. The husk content of Potassium and Phosphorus also provides a viable germinating material for the coconut sprout till it develops a sufficient network of roots and leaves at the seedling stage .

For years I dealt with palpitations due to low to mid grade stress. I was stressed for a long time and didn't realize it. Teeth clenching, sore jaw, lighter sleep, stiff neck muscles, joint pain etc. I had so many symptoms of stress. I went to a cardiologist about my palps, neither he or my doc knew what it was.
I just lived with it until I found Dr. Berg. Not only has adding potassium and magnesium to my diet helped, but also deep breathing. I also learned that many years of chronic stress caused me to breath shallow (short exhales). This was causing all sorts of problems including digestion and heart palps.
Sluggish digestion meant I wasn't getting my nutrients, along with problems with soil, etc. That just makes heart palps worse.
After just two days of focusing on breathing deeply (longer exhale) and adding more potassium, I noticed an immediate difference.
It's sad we can't get this kind of info from MOST doctors.

I had a check up with my nephrologist (kidney infection the cause of the hospital stay) and he listened and said go down to the lab and come back up. My blood work showed I had almost 0 K in my system. I had a massive electrolyte imbalance due to the constant diarrhea. Thank God I had a random appointment with this doctor, who did a lot to help me and alleviate some of the symptoms of C. Diff, as he knew about electrolytes. Too bad no other doc did at a world famous hospital. He said he didn't know how my heart was beating, my K was so low. Now I pay attention to electrolytes. Thank you for offering this information to us.

You are truly appreciated Dr. Berg. While in the hospital, I was in there on 2 different occasions, I notice the first thing they did was to give me potassium and magnesium. The last time I was in there bc of hbp. They loaded me up with all these BP meds.
Immediately I prayed in my mind, for understanding on what is causing my high BP I opened my phone , went to TH-cam, typed in natural remedies for hbp, and a video of yours popped up, explaining hbp, kidneys and just everything I needed to know. I have one kidney, (the hospital literally convinced me my one kidney was cancerous even after the biopsy said NO)I always was told too much potassium harm's the kidney. I saw your video, and it said the opposite!! Plus, they gave me potassium several times and magnesium once. THEN, after being armed with the info from several of your videos on hbp and kidneys, I told them I didn't want the meds bc I tht it was too much for my one kidney to handle. I said I wanted to work on changing my diet to protect my kidney. They shot me down everytime I mentioned controlling my BP with food, herbs and spices. They insisted I needed the meds. They then added a prescription and when I asked the nurse what it was for, she said to protect my kidney. When I looked it up, it did have potassium in it. I thought, based on your info, I only needed the potassium. The doctors did not want to figure out why my BP was high, they just kept telling me I needed to take those meds for the rest of my life.
I thank you Dr. Berg, for all that you do. You are are a blessing 🙌🏼.

Doing research on my own, I ultimately figured out that certain foods like Milk , cheese , sugar , non grass fed meats & oils swell my legs . I also found out that I was low on magnesium & potassium . These 2 electrolytes have been key in preventing my legs from swelling & helping with my anxiety . Like Dr Berg says , I sometimes want to tell people what they can do to fix their problem of swollen legs but people can be very sensitive now a days and would take offense instead of thanking you.

Supplements can be dangerous which is why most potassium supplements are so low dose, so you don't throw your heart rhythm out of whack. Consuming food sources of potassium is completely different as it is easily recognized and assimilated by the body and you won't get side effects from eating high amounts of potassium in foods.

In a way it is. The cell is comprised of calcium, magnesium, sodium & potassium in the proper amount UNTIL YOU fail to eat good things. So when your diet provides no fruits or veggies to obtain the necessary ratio of the 4 listed above the body takes of that which is present to fill the necessary void. Remember each cell must be filled 100% but when there is no available potassium or magnesium to fill its spot the body takes in sodium to fill the void. Which results in dis ease in the body. That throws off the fine tuning of a heathy body. That extra sodium (that you didn't need ) screws with the blood & the kidneys as would too much sugar or alcohol. That excessive sodium with a lack of the others results in SOME peoples blood pressure raising.
So eat your fruits & veggies (good carbs)
AND control the salt, desserts & sodas ( the bad carbs) May GOD bless you all. 🙏

It's the culinary sodium substitute "Nu Salt" and it's super cheap in the grocery aisle for salt, seasonings and salt substitutes. I too have been taking this as my potassium supplement - because it's so cheap, easy to find, and easy to use to get most of your daily potassium needs (although I'm trying to get more potassium from potassium rich foods).
HOWEVER, I would really like to know if it's safe, what's the best way to take it (with anything? how much how many times a day,) etc. and I've found almost no info to help me understand that - articles online, TH-cam, nothing.
All I know is that potassium chloride is a sodium free salt but because it's a "salt", people with heart and kidney and diabetes conditions and those on a low sodium diet especially for the heart and kidneys, can't use Nu Salt or other potassium chloride based culinary salt / sodium substitutes.

I watched a video made by an MD who warned against taking a lot of potassium if you were on ACE Inhibitors (blood pressure medicine (Liscinopril by name)). He said that ACE Inhibitors prevent the expulsion of potassium from the kidneys and you can wind up with toxic amounts of potassium in the blood, which can cause arrhythmia (afib). I've all but weaned myself off of Liscinopril and now I'm trying to get off of diuretics. I've found an AWESOME bowl of greens at Kroger's. It's organic and contains broccoli sprouts. I throw a lot of extra virgin olive oil on it, medium grind Himilayan Salt, I throw some walnuts in and chia seeds. I top it off with a thick dusting of unfortified nutritional yeast. It's delicious! Fortunately, I am a "health fanatic," eat well and exercise. I am also a practicer of meditation, an ex-yoga instructor, and ex Tai Chi Chuan instructor. I was a clinical psychologist and an NLP practitioner and instructor. All this, I think has helped me tremendously.
I take Potassium Chloride for the time-release prescription and sometimes an additional potassium (Citrate) when needed. I also take Magnesium Orotate because that's the only form I can have without dire intestinal effects.
I take a good digestive enzymes, a multi mineral, NMN with Resveratrol and additional specific supplements that help with other issues that you described. I am on a (modified) Keto diet (I include homemade rye sourdough bread), no junk food, plenty of probiotic foods that I generally make myself, practice intermittent fasting, walk a mile or more every day (well, most days).
I find my inversion table and recumbent stationary bicycle extremely helpful for muscle pain and overall symptom relief.
I will look into RTA. This is new information for me. I wonder if it could be behind the chronic UTI that I get. Since watching some lectures by Urologists to medical students, I discovered that I don't have to be on endless antibiotics. I now treat the UTIs early with cranberry juice (not from concentrate), lots of filtered water, anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric, garlic, ginger, etc., a supplements called "Defense Plus" (when needed).

It took. 5 bags of potassium to get my levels back to normal and I could walk again. And let me tell you it burns going in the inter time. It was a scary thing when I was laying on the ground and couldn’t get back up again. I was told I was lucky as it usually effects the heart before the other muscles. And it was the diuretic that was in the blood pressure medication I was taking that was the cause. Needless to say I make sure I get lots of potassium! Lol.

I've learned a lot from watching Dr. Berg's video's plus he's easy on the eye's ;) About 9 months ago, a highly stressful job and eating too much sugar eventually landed me in hospital. I was having breathing episodes that felt like I wasn't getting enough oxygen and I would get extremely lethargic. What caused that? The hospital did tests and a total blood work but couldn't figure it out so they assumed it was anxiety. Yes, I was experiencing hypertension but I was also experiencing digestive issues and it felt like my nervious system was being effected. I knew the stess, sugar and carbs lead up to this and that I would have to control them but I also thought maybe I was deficient in something and wasn't getting enough nutrients. When I got the breathing episodes, I drank electrolytes which seemed to help some. I would also get bad leg cramps during sleep. I explained my symptoms to my primary doctor but he also dismissed it as anxiety. I suppose it looked like anxiety to the doctors but I felt it was something more. If I had just taken anxiety meds like my primary wanted, I don't think it would have cured my problem. I needed help but didn't think doctors could help me so I thought the only thing I could do was help myself. So the first thing I did was quit my stressful job. Then I did a lot of online research and concluded that I would need to go on a nutrient rich healthy diet. I chose an anti-inflammatory diet. Also, I cleaned out my gut by drinking prune juice. I know, it's an old people thing but it works! I also drank a protein drink with 21 minerals and vitamins everyday. After about three weeks the breathing episodes and cramps were gone and I started to feel like I had more energy and lost weight. --- Even though I'm better now, I still wish someone could explain why I was getting those horrible breathing episodes.

Amen, Doc. I've been taking Potassium since my twenties. I would add that potassium citrate is bulky, the capsules are huge. Potassium Chloride is too much chlorine. Potassium gluconate is compact and dissolves in the mouth if you like. Potassium from food leads to too much magnesium (chlorophyll). Potassium sorbate in commercial foods is probably not such a good thing, as it is used as a preservative. It is still the inclusion of too much sodium in processed foods that leads to electrolyte imbalances as the customer drinks more to alleviate the discomfort.
Cold/Flu symptoms are mitigated by a high potassium, low sodium eating. Also, pain control.

@qtsssim I prefer potassium gluconate. You can let them dissolve in your mouth and they don't taste bad. The hardest part is resisting the urge to chew them. They are quite hard and if your teeth are weak you could chip a tooth, yet the urge to chew them is strong for me. Go figure. Price is important to me and Walmart is a good place to look. No way should you be taking 47 of these 100mg 'caplets' a day. I'm taking four a day on a regular basis for many years to eliminate symptoms. I've never found a combination of foods where I don't need potassium supplementation.

@@LPgmxDan No you have it backwards. Potassium is a palliative to cold symptoms, specifically coughing. Vitamin C for nasal congestion. Zinc and Vitamin A for the immune system. At the time I was on my way to discovering excess sodium intake exacerbated internal pain.

How are milligrams broken down for how much is needed and how does that work and factor in for someone who weighs 200 lbs and someone who weighs 140 lbs
Just curious about how the science works for establishing daily requirements.
I eat green bananas before I go to sleep and that helps me get to sleep faster. .
Thanks for your time and energy put into your videos . Much appreciate..

Dr. Berg, I really like this video!!!
I know someone whose ankles swell like in the picture in this video, and I do just wonder if it's a potassium deficiency.
I've taken up an interest in nutrition ever since watching your videos, and your definition of electrolytes along with the plethora of information in this video helps me SOO MUCH.
    Plus, sugar depletes potassium?!
I overindulged on sugar during the holidays, resulting in a UTI, which I haven't had in a year. I used to get UTIs all the time, when I ate sugar (and added sugar) everyday.
I like this video in particular also because you weren't pushing keto or IF throughout the video. I feel safe to share this with friends and family because of its information, not an agenda. So for this, Dr Berg, I say good job and thank you.

❤ Thank you so much! When I’m not feeling quite right, I always go to you 1st & find out how I can turn things around naturally! I know I can rely on my Dr. to give me medication if that’s what I need, but I prefer to go naturally whenever possible. You’re 99% on the time right on the money for me on things that I’ve let slip. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge!❣️

Cream of tartar is an excellent "supplement" (albeit higher in carbs). 1 tbsp gives you about half your daily need. And since you can buy it in bulk, it's quite cheap
