I agree, I watched that on VHS tape years ago and it was un-like anything I had seen Jackie Chan before. It really showed that he can do more than just action/comedy. Plus it has that great fight scene in the rope factory. Speaking of Jackie Chan, Shout Factory has released a few of his movies on Blu Ray recently(including the Hong Kong print of The Protector (1985), his second attempt to break into American cinema). Hopefully they will produce more since Dragon Dynasty has not put out any in long time. Also I heard that someone in the UK bought the rights to the Hong Kong Legends label. This label includes special editions of many of Jackie Chan's older movies and if you own a region free DVD player I highly recommend them.
I saw this film at the Montreal FantAsia film festival. It was awesome. I love Jackie's slapstick inter actions with the three hapless women. They had (in my opinion) a wonderful comic chemistry. The wind tunnel fight is a standout but there are so many great little ideas in the choreography throughout. Great job breaking it all down Mr. Harper.
YES! This seems like an obscure title for you to do and i LOVE it. Jackie Chan is a hero of mine. His movies...especially his run from around Drunken Master & Police Story era, up through Drunken Master II & Rumble in the Bronx are hands down some of the best action ever put to screen. THANKS!
I'd love to see a big one where he quickly talks about each film bc with earlier Jackie it's hit or miss, either great must-watch movies or drawn out with barely any Jackie at all!
@@Grachtnakk his early ones are just as good, from half a loaf of kung fu to dragon Lord are fantastic films, then his 80s and 90s films are good to, police story 1 2 3, dragons forever, wheels on meals, my lucky stars ,armour of god project A 1 2, it goes on. Which ones are misses ?
@@Grandmastergav86 I'm not sure right now, I'm from Germany and here the names were mostly changed. There's one where he only appears for like 15 minutes, some others have great stunts and fights but otherwise bore you to death with irrelevant (side) characters (like Gorgeous). Some of his new ones are pretty great though like Chinese Zodiac. When he's with Hong Kong and able to do his style it's not rarely still like back then.
Awesome review Oliver. Here in Chile, Jackie Chan Hong Kong movies were a must see in the late 70's and 80's what you call "Grindhouse" cinemas, where they usually show 2 movies with 2 or 3 years after it's debut. In the 90's many of these auditoriums started showing adult movies, were turn into christian temples, department stores or just demolished. Many of Jackie's films started to be distributed in VHS or you could pay very high prices to get them in CD-Video or laserdisc. In the eartly 2000 they started showing them at TV but after midnight and dubbed in spanish (trust me, the english dub is far superior to these atrocities). Now, at least, is easier to get his pre-Hollywood catalogue and enjoy most of it in Blu-Ray, but I would pay to watch "Operation Condor" in a movie theater where these movie belongs.
Interesting, here in France the majority of Jackie Chan films was and still is distibute to direct to video, I would like just for once to see a Jackie Chan film in a theatre.
Oh man, I have this movie on a Jackie Chan 4-Movie Pack from Echo Bridge Entertainment. It is of course the cut with Jackie Chan doing his own dubbing, but I still liked it. I actually had no idea that there was another dub of the movie, let alone an extended cut. It's also interesting the way the sequel was released here first before the actual first movie, first heard of it from James Rolfe on his "Chronologically Confused on Video Game and Movie Titles", a Cinemassacre classic if you ask me. Hope to see more Jackie Chan goodness in the near future on this show, great episode as always. 😁
I remember watching the version with Jackie's voice dubbed in at a friend's house. It's likely the first Jackie Chan movie I saw, and it was a bit before he started to appear in the American movies teamed up with an American actor. Great video, Oliver. It was so confusing trying to keep up with the explanations of the American releases and different dubs
This was my first jackie chan film and honestly his best for me personally. Had the right mix between comedy ,action and adventure. Theres a copy of the newer dub done by jackie on youtube i think and honestly it doesn't hold a candle to the other dub version i grew up with. 5/5
The behind the scenes footage of the film is astounding. Where did you get it from? And I agree with you regarding the original english dub. As a kid, I aways wanted Jackie's real voice to be like that.

Not too long ago, I recently watched Explorers (1985). I was wondering if you had any plans to do a retrospective on that movie. I really enjoyed it, and it seems like a movie that fits your channel.
88 Films are bringing out this film on UK Blu-Ray for the first time ever next month. I have pre-ordered it and I am really looking forward to what that version offers!
Good review, but there's a few things: I believe 'Project Eagle' is the Japanese title, and though possibly considered at first, the film might have ultimately been issued in Hong Kong as 'Armour of God II Operation Condor'. The UK releases tended to give prominence the latter half, which is possibly why it is presented here in the incorrect order. I could be wrong, but I don't know if Miramax did acquire this in 1991 - might have been later. Michael Lai/Lai Siu-Tin is the right way round. The UK Blu-ray is an upscale. However, a new 2K one was commissioned by Fortune Star, and has been released on one European boxset.
At the Hong Kong box office, Project A Part II grossed HK$31,459,916 (US$4,034,357). In Taiwan, it was the fourth highest-grossing film of 1987, earning NT$19,936,980[5] (US$697,097).[6] In Japan, it was the sixth highest-grossing foreign film of 1987,[7] earning ¥1.91 billion[8] (US$13.2 million).[4] In South Korea, it was the second highest-grossing film of 1984,[9] with 176,273 ticket sales in Seoul City,[10] equivalent to an estimated ₩616,956,000[11] (US$750,036).[12] This adds up to an estimated total gross of approximately US$18,681,490 in East Asia. The film was actually a higher grossing film in comparison to the first Project A
You know Jackie Chan made a film called Armour of God, then the sequel was Amour of god 2: Operation Condor. When OC came out in America it was just called Operation Condor, however when Amour of God was released in the US, they called it Operation Condor 2: Armour of God.
Hi Oliver. Maybe the sales market was different , but the vhs rental of ‘armour of god’ was out years before ‘condor’ in the u.k. I think it was a joint venture between VPD and American imperial. My local video rental shop had the huge poster of an airbrushed Jackie figure holding the flaming log, with the big wooden chandelier behind him, and Laura hanging on to his shoulder. When I was about 16, I had collected over 1000 Hong Kong movies ( mostly original, but latest releases were always bootlegs from Rick baker and Toby Russell in London!). Man, I don’t really meet anyone who knows enough about that time to chat about it with. Seems to be a largely forgotten scene. Especially the not so popular stuff. Shame ...
Oliver...I recommend you watch Jackie Chan’s ‘Dragon’s Forever’ in it’s original English dub....it’s hilarious and highly quotable ....aaaand it sounds very much like they got the same voice actor in Operation Condor for it.
In every other Jackie Chan movie I hated it when they redid the soundtrack, but this movie is the one exception, Dimension's music redo was better. But only because the original music sounds so cheap and corny. I wish there was a full length version, in Cantonese with Dimension's soundtrack.
...or even _Wheels on Meals_ (it was going to be called _Meals on Wheels_ but two previous films whose English titles began with M fared poorly, so they switched two words around!).
Your reviews are so enjoyable to watch, excellent, I always learn something new, please keep it up...another point is the actor that played the Spanish Lord in Armour of God 1 seemd to play a completely different version of the character or someone else entirely, but still seemed to know Asian Hawk. Great film none the less ..I also prefer the English dub...and the actor they chose to dub Jackie Chan has always been a favourite of mine. He was the first voice I heard and it stuck with me as Jackie's voice .. Especially in Armour of God 1 and Police Story 2. (Police Story 1985 was obviously the best though with such an outstanding score like Armour of God 1)
Great in depth review 👍 Unfortunately despite his eventual Hollywood success I don't think we ever got the best of Jackie in his American movies. Also, farcical dubs of his Hong Kong movies didn't do them justice either.......Watch the best of his Hong Kong movies with subtitles to see him at his best IMHO
In his classic Hong Kong movies he was allowed to take considerable amounts of time on his action scenes, which is why the fight scenes always look and feel so good. In the west the producers just seem to take the “time is money” stance and won’t let him spend that much time on just one scene.

Likewise, Oliver, I've always preferred the old school english dubbed audio and soundtracks for Jackie's 80s, 90s Hong Kong films! It's a shame they didn't retain the same English voice actor for the blu-ray re-releases.
How about retrospectives of "Iron Angels" (1987-Hong Kong) starring Moon Lee. It has excellent action sequences, and "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" (1969-British) starring Roy Thinnes, Patrick Wymark, Herbert Lom, and at least 4 cast members from the later Anderson series "UFO." I own it on LaserDisc, DVD, and Blu-ray. It's very good. A thinking person's sci-fi film with excellent SFX.
This is a blast from the past, Jackie at his best imo... and that wind tunnel fight is quite possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen.
This is one of the best action adventure films of all time in my opinion.
Big facts. And people barely know it.
Miracles is a damn masterpiece, Jackie's best directorial effort. It is brilliant, wonderful seeing the interplay between Jackie, Anita Mui and Wu Ma.
