As someone who-from the time I was a child- always hated spongebob because I thought it was immature, loud, and full of half baked, juvenile pandering nonsense, it is this video that has FINALLY made me understand why people liked it. The reason I hated it was because of the very thing the show was created to counter. It was created to appeal to people like myself, and because of corporate sanitisation, I had stubbornly rejected spongebob and everything it stood for. The end of this video was fantastic and hilarious, but I also think (and I may be generalising and presuming shite) that it demonstrates the frustration that I sorta felt with the series and those who tried to get me into it. A lot of modern spongebob fans always seem to be on the hunt for more and more content about it, and it almost strikes me as a bunch of children looking for more of what they want to see. I feel like the rabid and vocal nature of the community mimics the antics of those fish people of bikini bottom, and I think that’s possibly also the result of the executives eventually trying to appeal to those very same fish people. Idk, I’m rambling now. Basically, you have managed to do what many people have throughout my life have failed to, you’ve made me understand spongebob, and I enjoyed your phenomenal work. Looking forward to what’s to come.
I wasn't really expecting to persuade anyone to give Spongebob a chance; I was kind of going into this expecting most people to have given it a fair shake. But I guess it's like I said in the video: whether you're trying to target a particular audience or not, you're bound to still get some unexpected results. I'm happy my love for the show (or at least the show as it was in its prime) was able to resonate with you so deeply! The sad truth about this franchise is that it's not going anywhere. Nickelodeon (and VIacom in general, quite honestly) as a company has made it clear that their SOP as a company is to wring out everything out of its IPs and their creators until their last breath. It kind of reminds me of the SImpsons, honestly: the show at this point has morphed so far away from its original philosophy that it's barely even the same show, but it still brings in the big bucks so it just keeps going. At the level of popularity Spongebob's at, the show can't just "go away". I went into this project expecting what you were describing, the rabid fanbase clawing for more "content" about their favorite character; but the more I think about it the more I think it's not so much a Spongebob thing as it is a fandom thing in general. Every time a new Eminem album releases there's a slew of comments and messages asking me what I think and if the video I made still holds up or whatever. I even got a comment on this video asking about the Super Mario 3D World port! I don't really blame these people for wanting that feeling of completeness and closure on something they evidently care a lot about. Either way, I don't really plan on making any other Spongebob videos in the future; there's not really anything else I'd want to say.
SpongeBob is such a good cartoon I’m just now realising it’s the only cartoon I watched as a kid and even now as an adult, it’s all I’ve ever needed in kids cartoons
I will say though, as of around season 10, spongebob is in a great spot. it's not the same show and won't necessarily appeal to all the fans of the early years, but it's become an absolute treat for animation enthusiasts. some of the clips you used to represent the later seasons show off some of the ambitious, expressive, inventive animation the show is doing constantly nowadays :)
I'm personally a huge fan of the early seasons *and* a huge fan of the newer stuff. it's really two different shows that I enjoy for different reasons. the middle seasons definitely sucked ass tho lol
Incredible video! SpongeBob is very near and dear to me, it was when I was younger, and still is, though I haven’t seen any of the modern episodes and I don’t really plan too, I think you described it really well what SpongeBob was trying to do! And I love the parts about squidward and SpongeBob being the same, just with different outlooks!
All honesty...i thought this video was going to discuss the older audience watching the show and enjoying the adult jokes that can be found. Luckily I not only got that but also got a great shout out to my boy ROCKO! Thank you!
This is the best and deepest video on Spongebob I have ever seen! You really made me realize why the earlier seasons of the show worked - not just because it subverted the typical stereotypes in children's cartoons, but it was a show that didn't talk down to it's young audience. Growing up being more exposed to the later seasons of Spongebob, it is very frustrating to see him as more of a crybaby than an optimistic and innocent adult that tackles problem through kindness and love. You really gave me an appreciation for the show I didn't have before. I had no idea it was about treating others with love and care despite the harshness of the world. I really hope this blows up, because this really deserves so much more views and likes!
I think it’s more that SpongeBob and Patrick were more inconsistent, sometimes they are were smart, sometimes not. They seemed to change in intelligence levels depending on the stories.
I'm happy too, this was such a long time in the making and it's such a relief that it's finished and out there. Thanks for your help looking over the script earlier this year; and thanks for blessing the first few seconds of this video with your presence; it wouldn't be the same without it 😉
I don’t think SpongeBob completely changed after the first movie, seasons 4, 5, and 6 still had some incredible episodes and are just as nostalgic as the first three.
Excellent video. I think you put everything into great words. In fact, the way you described how SpongeBob has gotten worse is the explanation I've been looking for. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that before lol. I always love and appreciate """kids""" cartoons that are written in a way that doesn't talk down to kids. Spongebob, Rocko, Samurai Jack, Batman TAS, Invader Zim, Over the Garden Wall, and many more have all stood the test of time because of that. It's sad that we haven't really seen anything outstanding from Nick in the past several years. I'm just glad Cartoon Network is still willing to take chances.
real shame this banger doesn't have 100x more views. I'm proud to be one of those ppl who found BobbyBroccoli and Labhoot years ago and enjoyed more than their spongebob stuff lol. Y'all are some INSANELY smart writers.
It’s kind of amazing how fast the show morphed into just another kids show after the movie. I always knew that season 4 felt off already, even if the early episodes of it were mostly fine, but it’s really because the characters were immediately reframed into kids show molds. They just got worse at hiding it as the season continued and more seasons followed. I still don’t understand why Sandy’s character was changed so drastically. It never sat right with me that she just suddenly was a scientist. Most of the characters changed in the way you said around a quarter of the way into season 4, and became set in stone by the end of it. I can’t help but wonder if this is all because of executive meddling after Steve wasn’t around to really defend his baby, or because of all of the new writers who may not have been as acquainted with the show just didn’t understanding what they were writing for? Maybe both?
Yeah, I don't think modern Spongebob is terrible, I just think it became another kid's show even if it is still probably the best current show on Nick. It's not just because I did not grow up with it while the show was pretty much my life aorund the age of ten (though my nostalgia is admittedly a factor.) I would not discourage kids or anyone else from enjoying it, it's just generally not for me.
Never give up. This video just reached my feed 2 years later and I’m hoping that many viewers and new subscribers will come to you soon! This was such a great video with far too little views. I am sharing this with my friends as well.
This is a truly fantastic video, Matt. I always felt that Spongebob was better suited as an avenue for introducing adult issues to children rather than distracting children with a bright and colorful cartoon. That "sanitation" that Hillenburg incorporated into the ways these characters interacted and tackled the themes really struck a nice balance. I'm so glad that you brought the first movie into the discussion as well -- I never thought about how it connected to all of this. It really does take Spongebob and place him in the same situations he's always prevailed through, now cranked up to eleven. Anyways, phenomenal video here!
Phenomenal work, the spongebob always stuck with me because of how spongebob being spongebob is actually a good thing in the end. And I feel like more people should try acting a bit more like spongebob. Maybe we'd get a better world in the end.
Watching b4 it's copyright claimed. Also I AM NOW A SPONGEBOB UNDERSTANDER!!! Thanks mate it's absolutely amazing how every video essay you make is a new classic. Man don't miss at all! Absolute banger~💚💚💚
While I've seen plenty of the older episodes and have enjoyed them, I never loved Spongebob the way some do and this video did a great job of helping me understand where that passion comes from, fantastic video my dude.
Great video. I also noticed that most of the characters are grown-ups, unlike most children's cartoons. I strongly disagree that there was a quality decline. Some of my favorite episodes ever came from the later seasons. Not Normal, Karate Island, Gone, Spy Buddies, Broken Alarm, Sing a Song of Patrick, Battle of Bikini Bottom, Krusty Kleaners, New Digs, etc.
You can enjoy those and that’s valid, but the VAST majority of people agree the quality began to tank after the movie. The show failed to resonate with audiences the way it used to anymore, and personally I can’t stand the later episodes. Good on you for finding enjoyment in them but if most people stopped enjoying the series, the quality pretty inarguably declined
Love this so much. I love it when people analyze spongebob because there is so much more than just what’s on the surface. So much is left to interpretation and is symbolic that it’s always fun to hear other people’s opinions on it. Great video!
Great video! Really thoughtful, upbeat and polished work! Your love for the show and attention for detail oozes through the entire thing, and you did a really good job of walking us through the show's creative strengths back in its heyday.
Amazing video as always! But I got a off-topic question; will you ever talk about Super mario 3d world + bowser's fury? You once said the wii u version was your favourite 3d Mario game so I'm really curious to know your thoughts about the many changes and new things they're adding to the game.
Thanks for watching! I don't think I'll have much to say on the remake, so I don't see myself making a video about it (probably won't make a video about a 3D Mario game for a long long time) but I'll probably give some sort of impressions of it on Twitter! I also have been debating doing a more regular unscripted thingy on the channel so maybe I'll talk about it there? No promises, though!

I don’t SpongeBob was ENTIRELY a crybaby in later seasons, trust me, some episodes he was a lot more like his old self than others.
I think it’s more that SpongeBob and Patrick were more inconsistent, sometimes they are were smart, sometimes not. They seemed to change in intelligence levels depending on the stories.
