I remember the one time I played Stratego my friend used the optimal setup and I have never been so mad in my life. GREAT video, I love board / tabletop mechanics, so glad someone is tackling them in this space!

Matt holy crap this was an amazing video. You hooked with the dominant strategy, you spiked with the political and historical context. Gotdang, this was great, the flow was fire. Bless you. In my family we never played with house rules which is probably why I hate monopoly. I love you.

Love games that are more than just allegories, but simplifications of real life in order to critique aspects of real life.

I love how this vid takes such a sharp turn and starts to be about history and the statements that were baked into Monopoly's game mechanics themselves. I used to play Stratego with my dad too, and we found out we should hide the flag in the corner pretty quickly lol

I came here from ShayMay's tweet, and holy crap I was blown away. Phenomenal work here, everything from the script to the editing is top notch. You also managed to finely walk the line on a charged political subject - it wasn't a rant about "this is good/bad," but rather bringing attention to the existence of a particular phenomenon, and how that existence is interesting regardless of your political viewpoint. Awesome work man

I too was brought here from a tweet. Very interesting video! I have a lot of nostalgia for Monopoly and can never get anyone to play it with me, so it was nice to see someone actually, like, talking about it. Favorited!

Great work, impressive even. Those motion graphics are top notch. Using Stratego to lay your foundation before moving on to Monopoly's more complicated setup and premise made it easier to follow. Transitioning from Stratego's exploitative nature to Monopoly's then hitting Monopoly's history made for clear transitions before nailing the coffin.
I'm disappointed you were only patient enough to record two doubles in a row instead of three, but I wouldn't want to go to jail either.
Hit me up with those sponsor details.

The bomb sergeant trap is not a good Stratego strategy, especially if you do a dummy set up on the other side. You are immobilizing too many pieces. It gets destroyed by any good player.
House rules make the game worse, as they make it more luck based and extend the time it takes to play the game. House rules make the game less enjoyable and they make a game that takes between 45-90 minutes to play into one that takes hours to play.
The Red are more valuable than the yellow because they are landed on more often and their really isn't that much of a difference in rents paid.

I played Monopoly once... it went FAR too slowly to be interesting. Later though, I found Fortune Street, which scratches the same itches Monopoly does, but changes several things that, in my opinion, fix several underlying problems that mere house rules cannot save...
For instance, the end goal. No longer is it "bankrupt everyone", but rather it's "reach a net worth of X (decided by the player beforehand) and get back to start" (though bankruptcy IS still a viable win condition). This serves to cut down on the situations where everyone KNOWS who is going to win, despite the game being nowhere near finished.
Development is also overhauled. Instead of four houses and a hotel, each shop has a "Max Capital", which is the amount you can invest to make the place more pricey. This value (as well as the base value) is affected by how many shops you own in that district, so 2 is better than 1, 3 is better than 2, and a full Domination is of course best of all. However, you have to land on one of your properties to do any investing, rather than just doing it at any time.
Auctions are streamlined as well. At any time, a player may auction a shop, with the starting value of the base price. Each bid adds 10G to the cost, thus simplifying the decision down to "do I press the button?". This can lead to things like driving up the bid to screw over others, potentially getting screwed over yourself, and prioritizing which shops you want. This also happens if you're forced to sell a shop to the bank, though when THAT happens you don't get the money from the auction. And if no one bids? Then it just becomes an unowned property again!
Want to sell to a specific individual? No problem! You can set the exact value you're asking for, they can come back with a counter offer, and that's that! Same goes for buying shops too! You can even exchange a shop YOU own for one THEY own, say if you each are in the way of the other's Domination? Heck, even if they DON'T want you to have their shops, you can still "buy them out" for 5x the shop value! 3x goes to the opponent, the other 2x to the bank.
Stocks also exist! When the shops or stocks of a district are invested in, the stock price OF that district goes up. When those values go DOWN though, the stock prices follow suit. This can lead to some rather sneaky moves... riding someone else's success, buying so much stock in your opponent's district that they don't want to invest in their shops, selling your stocks bit by bit to bleed an opponent dry...
Oh, also, "Vacant Plots"! These special shops can be renovated to have a number of wacky features, like letting you purchase an unowned shop, letting you travel anywhere on the map, bringing everyone to your location... or just being a REALLY high end normal shop! And you can choose before starting the game how many of these stores there will be!
And it's all wrapped up in a Mario/Dragon Quest package, complete with computer players if you don't have enough humans! I've got a full LP on my channel if you want to see it in action!

But the thing with Monopoly is, most people make their own house rules, and don't really play by the printed rules.
Free Parking Cash, Once-Around-Before-Buying, these rules just prolong the game, which is why games take forever...
