Your comment, for some reason, made me think of that one Spongebob episode where Spongebob is working at the Chum Bucket and Mr. Krabs is still at the Krusty Krab and they’re singing about how much they miss each other 😂 Now, for some reason, all I can see is Roger as Mr. Krabs and Mark as Spongebob 😂
I think the whole idea behind Mark's character is that even though he's not sick himself, he's still got to watch his close friends succumbing to their illnesses well before their time. Of course this gives him a lot of cause to think about life and death and I guess I can easily see how he might come to think of all people as "dying", since everyone will pass away eventually. So to him, it's more of a continuous state rather than a thing that will necessarily happen by a set time.
i have a ransom obsession with the part when roger says " Mimi i see you" it just sounds so different than everything else he sings and i love it so much
When you finally realize after literally years of watching Rent over and over again that Anthony Rapp sings in a lower register than Adam Pascal. Wow, I caught literally everything about the movie and cast but that. Way to go Em,you finally got it.
The story (in this movie) was so sad, but the music was freaking AMAZING!!! I watched this movie for the first time in my chorus class, and the whole time I was thinking, "How did Jonathan Larson manage to turn such a sad and horrible time for America into such an amazing musical?"
Rafiki Pines Griffin He made it clear that it was a horrible time, that's how. A lot of people would have sugarcoated the hell out of it, like Chris Columbus tried to do by cutting out "Goodbye Love" from the movie.
What You Own is my favorite Rent Song hands down followed by No Day but Today and Rent. Does any get goosebumps when you listen to this song? I always get goosebumps from this song lol
The way Anthony's face changes at 3:20 when Mark turns around and sees Roger there!!! It's like everything that was wrong in Mark's world was suddenly fixed in that instant. AHHHH!!!
obscure broadway I agree. I think it really fits the ‘ damaged rocker ‘ look thing. Like, that’s not all Roger’s character is, but still. It is quite nice, and it suits him.
Wow, I really didn't pay attention to this song when I first heard it- I really love how it sounds, listening to it now! This is slowly becoming one of my favorites.
I forced my dad to watch this with me, and he fell asleep within the first few minutes, then woke back up in time to see this and turned to me and was like, "Are they gay?"
I am here in 2023 to say that Mark and Roger were in love and no one can ever tell me otherwise. :D (Also Anthony Rapp's Mark was so freaking adorable.)
Johnathon Lawson would have loved to see his musical be on Broadway and be a movie. It's a shame how he died before knowing if his musical was a hit or miss. I am thankful we have Rent as a movie and a musical in general.
+Natalie A I guess it was the films way of him making it a declaration rather than a phone conversation. I had to think about it that way,b/c it weirded me out @ 1st,too,lol.
except that he's saying that he wants to finish his own film. In the play he's on the phone with Lexi (hence why he says her name) when he says this. This is the moment where both he and Roger figure their lives out on their own. He wasn't trying to kill himself, this was just bad film making.
I want to live in a musical. Every mundane moment during the day would become something special and beautiful. I'm living in Ameeeeriiica and I think I need to eat some food. Hey it could work.
When I watched this for the first time with my Dad it was already at this scene and I was trying to catch him up to the story and he was all -"Are these guys gay too?" I almost died laughing.
I go see Rent tomorrow and this is my favorite song from the musical. While I wish that it was these two singing it, and while I’m excited for all of it because I love this freakin’ musical, I’m really excited to see this song be performed.
mae k Yes, I watched the movie after listening to the songs and once I watched the movie I looked up the actual Musical and saw they had left out a lot of characterization and plot and even some songs(even though there is quite a lot of songs) Either that or I didn't pay enough attention. I want to see the broadway version but I don't know how to access that. I think there's a filmed version of the broadway show on here so I'll probably check that out.
No, he's obviously not going to kill himself. On the roof, he said he needed to finish his own film. How could he finish his fil if he kills himself right then and there? Also, if he kills himself then, he would be a giant coward as he is he is one of the only characters to not have any serious problems in his life (He even has a well paying job!) while everyone else is dying of AIDs.
Eh... I don't know about all of that. "Finishing his own film" could easily be interpreted as him choosing to end his life. Also... "coward" is a poor word choice and your reasoning doesn't even make sense. Beyond that, while suicide is never the right answer, someone isn't lesser of a person for handling emotions different than someone else. To be clear: I'm not coming from a bitter or angry place. Just laying my thoughts out.
PeachBerryGlitch! + I still think that “finish my own film” refers to actually finishing his film because that WAS the intent in the actual Broadway show. Also, note that he says “Angel, I hear you” and “I see it my film”. Would Angel be whispering to him to kill himself? Its obvious from these lines that Mark was experiencing sudden artistic inspiration for his film from Angel, just like Roger, who was, at the same time, experiencing artistic inspiration for his song from Mimi, which can be seen from his lines "Mimi, I see you" and "I hear it my song". Lastly, I still stand by that Mark would be a coward IF the intent WAS for Mark to contemplate suicide. This is because Mark is one of the only characters not experiencing any "real" issues, unlike the ppl around him. Collins just lost a lover and Mimi, Roger AND the life support group are all dying slowly from AIDs, so for Mark to give up on life just because of his relatively minor issue of being afraid to be the only one left at the end.... reflects rather poorly on himself and his ability to cope with problems with respect to the people around him
"So I own not a notion I escape an ape content I don't own emotion-- I rent" i know this was written more than a decade before the advent of social media but somehow i feel like this song speaks to the social media age as much as it does the late 90s.
He was quitting his job...... Hence "Alexi, Mark call me a hypocrite if I need to finish my own film. I quit." And Angel was the inspiration for his film.
Don't take that literally. Roger says "Mimi, I see you" too. That's just the moment they both regret escaping their emotions. Mark quits because the news he was broadcasting were racist (because of the "welfare queen" stuff he says before the song, in the original). So he couldn't sell his ideals, and Roger just couldn't escape from what he felt for Mimi and Mark.
I think this is my favorite song from this show. I mean, everyone loves La Vie Boheme, Tango: Maureen, One Song Glory... I like this song and "Rent." Just... personal preference. :)
@DaniLoveMusic1 the man who is traveling is Roger played by Adam Pascal. The one who harmonizes during the owns at the end is Mark played by Anthony Rapp. Mark and Roger both harmonize on the last own together
One of the things I noticed about this scene is that the santa fe scenes are all orange/yellow warm tones and new york is all blue and black and darker as well (cool tones). Except if you look at what they are wearing, it's the opposite.
when your friendship is so strong you sing a duet together on opposite sides of the country
Truth girl Truth

I think Rapp and Pascal REALLY kept Johnathon's dream knit together; from the stage, to a film/movie set is NOT an easy transition. Kudos, guys!!!
The harmonies in this song are amazing and no one sings them like Rapp and Pascal. I bet Jonathon smiles every time he hears these two.
when mark was editing the video and we saw angel i started to cry again
Same!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭
SAME 😭💔

Yeah, but as Roger points out to him:
M: "Perhaps it's because I'm the one of us to survive!"
R: "Poor baby!"

I love the line "the filmaker can not see, the song writer can not her" because it shows how they can't move on in a quick yet very effective way.

Musical or poetry format makes any sad story better. Take Edgar Allen Poe for example.
Their harmonies are what make the song 💛 and I love their bromance hug at the end 😆

Adam Pascal is such an amazing singer and actor. He is born to be an actor.
