Old Note was the song that accompanied me on the day and night of my beloved Dad's passing. It was the CD I had in the car by chance and I just played that song on repeat on the way to and from the hospice and on the drive out to tell me mother he had passed in the dead of night. Perfect, moving. He was a singer , as am I . When I listen to it now , I can't describe the feeling.
I love this, it's beautiful for you to share that. As a musician myself, I wanted to say that perhaps you should write a song about this song and/or the feeling you get when you hear it, how its indescribable? I don't know, just something to think about!
music is magic, I have a similar experience and connection to another song as it was on when I was driving to the hospice to hold dads hand while he died - funny it was early spring last year and we managed to wheel him outside for one last experience of sunshine on his face and he kept saying 'oh yeah' Laurent Bardainne & Tigre d'Eau Douce - Oh Yeah
Old Note. The music, the instruments, the pace, the lyrics, the voice is a harmonious masterpiece on a midnight walk home along the bushy narrow roads in County Cavan, the peace we feel in the lonesome beauty of our exile here.
Lisa O'Neill Ancestors must be so proud... As a Kerryman This cavan woman soothes my soul she is mighty that why she was chosen to sing Kristy part in fairytale of NY At shanes funeral She is a credit to auld Ireland 🇮🇪 And her family. Cash is still King Darling NPR never fail to deliver ...
I saw Lisa perform this not long ago, she explained what it means. She said we're surrounded by noise, traffic, phones, TV, etc, she described them as surface noises, but said underneath all that noise are old notes, within the ground & they've been there since the dawn of time. She believed the ground underneath us is alive & carries something fundamental to all humans.
Yes, like a dream that reminds me of a feeling that I've felt as a child but had long forgotten...and yet unique and new. An unknown but still familiar realm.
I've been utterly obsessed with "Old Note" ever since I stumbled upon it on my YT feed a couple months ago. I can't remember the last time a song has moved me so deeply. The day after I first heard it, I pulled my wife aside, played the song for her, and told her "THIS is the song I want you to play at my funeral." A week later, we had to put down our beloved 14 year old dog, Bella. For the following week, I played "Old Note" on repeat about 1,000 times. For the rest of my life, whenever I hear this song, I will feel close to Bella and remember her fondly. Thank you, Ms. O'Neill.
Right there with you! Traditional Irish Folk can, because of the "Troubles", fall down a rabbit hole of misery (like Morrissey, or a very funny St. Pat's Day ep of Cheers where Sam hires the WRONG Irish band.😂). The best Irish folk rides the twin rails of bittersweet/lamentful and hopeful. Lisa et al are the best of Irish folk music. Absolutely beautiful.
Been doing the Wild Atlantic Way on the bike...10 days fully circumnavigating Ireland actually, so had the COVID Concert downloaded especially for the wilder parts of the ride, and it absolutely made for a deeper epic ride. When that wind whips across the boglands, add to that the sheep just doing their own thing under the moody clouds, and Lisa fills your helmet with that energy & soul, born from the beautiful wild country that is Ireland...priceless 🙏
I purchased "All of this is chance" on Vinyl off the back of hearing "old note" on the radio......its mesmarising, a stunning record, a masterpiece.....this is the TIny Desk Concert I have been waiting for!!
Im in Newfoundland - Canada’s Ireland. I just cant get enuff of you ever since I heard “Blackbird” on Peaky Blinders. You and your band are just fantastic! ❤

Go on you fecking good thing Lisa ❤ Such deserved success 🌼 Lovely that Tiny Desk platformed our beure 🎉
Loved that. I get so drawn in to the loop of Lisa listening to herself, as if she's finding her way through the world by singing into the space around her
Can remember seeing Lisa at the Button Factory in Dubs back in 2010...great artist ...glad to see her on Tiny Desk...well deserved...and a right character in Bewleys...go girl!
This woman is pure gold. I love her so very very much. The first months after my mum passed away, I used to listen a lot to Lisa O'Neill. Every time I miss my mum, Lisa just brings me back the warmth and safe feeling my mum used to give me.
The first song is called Old Note. The scenic mystical video of her awandering on some rural road singing this is majestic. I said to my mother that she sounds like the voice of Ireland. Then I said she sounds like an ancient wise crone. But my mother then said she sounds enchantingly like a very small child. I now think she sounds like all of these and more. In Irish archaeology is a tripple faced Goddess. Many stone carvings of her have been discovered. There is resonance with this tripple voice.
I saw Lisa and band on the eve of the pandemic and nothing has been the same since but her music has been with me almost every day. I have been waiting for this NPR and loved every moment. Goodnight world is such a beautiful song and a great closer. Thank you NPR and Lisa O’Neill
Had to re work my brains pathways for this, been listening to a lot of underground hip hop, hard house, & jazz, so for me this is another sphere entirely.
Thanks for finally sharing this incredible Artist’s TDC. This is my favorite album of the year, first half. Along with Lankum, Ye Vagabonds and The Mary Wallopers, Traditional Music in Ireland is in safe hands moving forward.
She has me spellbound this wonderful artist, not sure if it’s her voice, the stories, the lyrics or the music maybe it’s a combination of all. Thanks Lisa for your music, you are awesome!
Thank you algorithm. The line at 2.24 just got me to my core. And then it just got better. Astounding. Imagine the idea of an indigenous voice.Noone ever told me that that was a thing.
Lisa helps me understand indigeneity and the mesmerizing power of connection to place. How we are lost and wandering without it, and possibly corrupted. I’ve had Old Note literally on loop for two weeks now. This concert only deepens my awe of her.
Old note just blew my mind, the expression of raw feeling, universal and pre historic, linked to everything in nature, even the atoms that we all share.
Been waiting for this one for a while! Was lucky to see Lisa perform a few months back - one of the most haunting live shows I've seen. Amazing writer, performer and an absolute character! Go see her perform if you get the chance! Doing another Irish tour in October.
I play Lisa's song 'Goodnight World' to my little 6 month old girl every night as I rock her to sleep and we both love it..fair play Lisa..keep creating..your music is magic
I was waiting for this TD so bad, love lisa, her voice is haunting, like an ancient river flowing through, channeling timeless music with the power of Irish tradition. Sending love and admiration ❤
Great band and a magical singer. With my morning coffee, wonderful sounds were brought to us again from the almost infinite sound sung by The Tiny Desk. Thanks!

Never heard this before. Humbly saying my knowledge of music is ever developing. Tiny Desk brings my mind and soul to places I've never been. The most valuable subscription I have on TH-cam I think. Thank you from Suriname!
Me too. Looked her up that night of the finale, listened to all of her music over the next few days, and I've listened to it pretty much daily ever since.
There is nothing on this earth as pleasant as an Irish lass with a lovely voice singing her words. It reminds when I was an altar boy looking down on the choir. The band and Lisa are phenomenal, breathtaking thank you Lisa and your band mates.
On All Songs Considered she tells a haunting story of the writing of Old Note, and the living belief in Ireland of spirits and fairies among the living. There's a recording of her 4 year old niece on the album version where she says "The people say no more songs" and Lisa asks "What people" and her niece replies "The people on the stairs." Goosebumps every time.
Had the privilege to see Lisa and the band at a tiny theatre on the edge of the sea in Lyme Regis a few weeks ago. The music was as memorable, haunting and sublime as we expected. What we hadn’t anticipated was quite how relaxed and funny Lisa was when talking to the audience between numbers. She had us all absolutely spellbound - it was one of those concerts that stays with you forever. Hope to see her again one day..
So glad to see Lisa showing her obvious talent in the US....Her stubborn use of her local Cavan accent is admirable and is so effective in illuminating her brilliant lyrics.....
Wonderful! First saw Lisa a long time ago during Atlantic Sessions in Kiwi's old place on Causeway St, Portrush. I was one of a dozen people there for the music with most people after pizza. I bought her first album from her and rediscovered it during lockdown. Bought another equally good album. First heard Old Note of Iggy's 6 Music show and bought that album too. Great to see her getting some of the recognition she deserves.
TH-cam recommended this to me after watching Lisa and Glen Hansard perform Fairytale of New York at Shane MacGowan's funeral. And this? This is WILD, and I mean that as in feral. Old Note is *incredible.* I love her. New fan. [edit: meant to mention how delighted I was to spot Joe Doyle! man I miss the Frames.]
