A good friend of mine ended his life earlier this year, and this was put in the playlist of his favourite songs. His death completely blindsided us all, and one night when we were all sat around mourning him and sharing stories, this song came on his playlist and punched us all in the gut. It was the first time we'd heard it, and amongst all the classics and pop bangers it was the first song that really made it plain how much he had been struggling. It is so painful and yet so full of strength that I'm sure he came to it time and time again for comfort and resonance in his darkest times. I'm so grateful for this song, so that I can be with him once again during his darkest hours, where for so long he mostly suffered alone. Thank you for this.
And for anybody out there who is struggling and feels alone or at the end of their rope: there is always somebody you can talk to; always light in the darkness. Find a support group in your area or call the Samaritans. Trust me, and trust the people around you, that there is always another option.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my eldest son a few years ago. He just didn't want to be here anymore. He was Gay & before he left he told me that he wished he wasn't as he believed that life would have been easier for him if he were straight. I respect his choice, but so wish that I could have had enough influence on him to get him to stay. R.I.P Lee x

I'm a Longshoreman from Canada, I love hearing music about our trade. I'm lucky enough to work on a dock where all the ships have their own cranes, so the machines haven't taken our jobs yet. We still have to get on the ship and hook the steel onto the cranes by hand.

I keep coming back to this song. The text is so powerful. Even a relatively young person like me can see that the age of digitization, automation, and technical development is scraping off chunks of culture and traditional living, and it's saddening. Also, the instrumentals are so fitting! Reminiscent of a rumbling machine engine, droning on in the background, slowly trying to overpowering the words of the docker... Until it stops.
Thanks you so much for making this

    I'm losing will love
My hands are soft as cotton gloves
Machine has eaten up my job
    My meaning, my cause.
Machine with the strength of a hundred men,
Can't feed and clothe my children,
Can't greet a sailor coming in,
    Or know of desperation.
I shovel coal down Spencer's dock.
I took your dear into Wedlock.
In you did bear us a beautiful flock,
We will rock the machine down on the dock.
We will rock the machine until it stops.
Oh Lo' if you show me gold!
Like a herring I will go.
    Roaring liffy when you're high
Like a cormorant I will dive.
In the cold wind flow I will rise,
We're going off to win back time.
We're going off to win back pride.
We will rock the machine until it dies.
    Today dear I'm unemployed.
Before I spoke you read my eyes.
I feared of nothing or no one.
But I feel old and I'm so young.
I miss the graft I miss the boys,

My Dad was a docker in Liverpool, he took me to the dock road once when I was a kid in the 60's. There where so many men coming out at the end of the day you could not see the road, walking or on push bikes. Later in the 70's the free port was opened with hugh container bases. Most of the men lost their jobs including my Dad who never got work again after that. Ruined a whole community having those container bases.

'Or know of desperation...' So much emotion, feeling and empathy in this song, I have to stop playing it 'cos it makes me well up every time. When I first heard it I thought it was about the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th century, but I've since learnt it was about the dockers from the 1960s and '80s. But it could just as easily be a metaphor for neoliberalism and all the jobs being lost to automation today as well. The rich will always value profit over people.

You're correct mate it's a very irish, soulful, celtic song at heart but the lyrics are from the perspective of a deindustrialised worker - not necessarily Irish - who has found his trade sold out from under him ... I can understand the connection with the pits of England ... it wasnt the yorkshireman or the geordie or the lancastrian miner who subjugated Ireland ... it's a beautiful song that (I hope) can overcome even those national boundaries ... the working men of britain were also victims to John Bull's tyranny imo.
It's a beautiful fucking song and, though I love the 'RA and Rebel Music, I hope the message of solidarity and unity through tragedy, strength through the expression of working class grief ... that (hopefully) transcends national boundaries to reach the heart and soul of the workers ...

Good God!! 😳Where did this come from? Hits you full wallop in the gut, but In a really good way ! The Purest, rawest, most heart wrenching and authentic soul music. So grateful to have found this. ❣️What a unique gift! Such a rare , beautiful and powerful voice, right in the midst of such a sea of shite.✊❤️Thank You so much!🙏
