    You guys were not wrong! I watched your video yesterday. Today I installed the beast. I had to grind a ton of metal off those hinges and it still doesn’t quite fit right. It’s very poor quality. I’ll be making a video and posting it on my new channel. I’ll give you guys a shout out. Thanks for the help.

      I’m no Mechanic by any means and y’all r making this out to be way way harder than it needs to be. I installed this on my 17 Jeep, and yes it took time and patients, but nothing like the way y’all make it look or sound. Could DV8 have made parts as to not grind out the pins, sure, but @ how much more of a cost to us? It’s already $$$....... all in all not that hard with a bit of commons sense and elbow grease.

    Thanks for this, I bought the bumper that is shown with this carrier majority of the time online. The RS-14, it is just like this carrier. It looks cool, but there are ABSOLUTELY no LED lights that fit in it, and it only bolts to the side frame, not the middle one by the muffler. I called DV8 about the LED light situation, I see some bumpers come with flush mounted LED lights. Exact questions and answers “Do you have the lights for this bumper?” “No sir we no longer sale them.” “Okay, what kind are they so I can go to my Jeep store and get them?” “2 inch LED, cube.” “No they’re not. I have those, and they don’t fit.” “Well we do sale the wiring kit you’ll need!” “No I won’t need that, and what good does having the wiring kit if you don’t even have the light?”
    Guy at Jeep store said they didn’t account for the housing of the LED light. Also the reason he switched from carrying DV8, to Rough County products. Stated he hated that kept manufacturing something, it wouldn’t work, so they’d modify it to “make part of it work”, but still sold it.

    Ive installed maybe 8-9 of these dv8 kits and have had ZERO of the issues that you have had. You’re not supposed to file anything on the kit. Its your mistake for trying to tackle something that you’re not familiar with. YOU messed up your kit AND your jeep. All I’ve ever had to do was give the hinges a very slight love tap to open them up, level the kit from side to side with the bumper as a guide. Tighten the passenger side, then line up the driver side hinge plate THEN mark your holes checking 4-5 times before drilling to avoid ONE of your mistakes. You have given a bad product revue due to YOUR shit abilities. People think that they must do everything alone (built not bought) but if its NOT your forte then dont be afraid to get help. I give full props for doing it yourself but your install would have had not one issue had you just asked a local shop a few questions. Be safe riding. Happy trails.

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You got some solid kits. Unfortunately we didn't. If all I had to do was tap it in, I assure you I would have. I'm happy for your success, but dozens and dozens of others across all of our social media have told us they had the same issues. Even when we contacted the company they said they have issues during welding and that the bracket . Anyways, what's done is done. I'm glad you had positive experiences.

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, our kit wouldn't even align when it was off the vehicle.. I mean, that bit has nothing to do with install process.

  • @lewsmith4279
    @lewsmith4279 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Loved the video but dude when you punched out the holes on the left side it KILLED me. You dented the quarter panel when you didn’t need to and that bracket is not going to sit flush on the panel because it’s got multiple dents underneath. Also a dremel is not the right tool. A grinding disk would have gotten the bolt out of the hinge WAY quicker. I am also curious, how did the bracket on the left side fit perfectly when you were lining it up to mark the holes but after install it didn’t? My suspicion is that when you punched out the holes, denting the quarter, because the bracket is no longer perfectly flush against the panel it caused it to be misaligned slightly causing the issue you had.

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for the comment! The theme of our channel is to get it done with the tools we have or with those that are incredibly readily available..That being said, despite denting the panel, the bracket sits flush once you tighten the bolts. In fact, when I removed the bracket, it was no longer dented. The issue with the bracket was even when it is off the vehicle, the two tabs did not align with the tire carrier, as you could imagine, it turned into a nightmare after installing since it didn't align during the very best case scenario - off the vehicle.
      I agree, a grinding disk would have been better, however, most people have dremels, so we wanted to show that it IS possible with a dremel. IF we ever decide to part ways with the carrier, we will repair the holes or get corner guards. Not a problem. Happy jeeping and thanks for your comment and support!

      Just as a note for others watching this when you center punch to drill all you need to do is make a small mark that a small drill bit will center on so that the bit stays in place when starting the hole you dont need to punch through the metal.

    Just a thought maybe having the bracket with the 2 pins already on the tire carrier would allow you to swing it closed and you would be able to see exactly where to mount the bracket on the jeep.

    Had the exact same problems installing one of these on my friends jeep. While they look great it feels like they don't even have a quality control department. Ours was so bad, it would take so much force to get it to close that we ended up having to get DV8 to replace it. When we got the new one also found out they either gave us an old or defective one the first time around. The top right bolt was not welded correctly at all.

    I’ve seen a lot of DV8 carriers and I’ve gotta day you guys definitely got the worst end of it. I’ve spoken to lots who had an easy install and no issues, and have only heard of 1 or 2 that had some issues. Biggest downside people have told me about is the powder coat sucks and it starts to rust very early on. That alone is enough to steer me away. Looking forward to a future video where you remove this and fix up all of the holes as go to something better for you guys.

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the comment! Unfortunately, many others (10+) have reached out to us and said they had the exact same issues. We basically avoid using the trunk now, which sucks because the carrier no longer aligns. I think we will end up putting corner guards and a spare tire carrier bumper..Cheers

    That’s why I don’t have the spare on the back of my Jeep. I putt my spare in the back when I go wheelin. Never have to worry about it. And it saves on weight 😎

  • @rticul8862
    @rticul8862 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if anyone else mentioned, but there are a couple of issues that's clear. First, you should NOT have had the spare tire on while marking the holes. The weight between that and they way you were leaning on it while marking the holes made it sag down too far, which is why the bottom hole was too far down. If you watch while prepping to mark the holes, you can see how far up/down the tire carrier is flexing when it's leaned on. With that said, your adjustment bolt should have been centered and would have helped a lot, if not completely. Second, you only needed to put a very slight mark with a center punch. That's only used to prevent the drill bit from walking. I'm not trying to hate, so please don't take it that way, just constructive criticism. Keep on keepin' on!

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate the feedback. Those were small bumps along the way. The major issues which make this a total bust is how it wouldn't even align off the vehicle before even attempting install. That and the both the original and replacement brackets have holes which are impossible to access from behind the tail light.suppose we got another system, our little mistakes would have still yielded a usable product. Live and learn.

    • @rticul8862
      @rticul8862 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Garagecouple agreed. The good news is that it looks like the poison spider carrier will cover all of the old holes, so it should look great if you choose to go that route. 😀 Be aware, it isn't without its flaws as well. It tends to loosen up at the latch, but easily remedied with a welder and couple small bits of metal to strengthen it.

  • @anthonys5243
    @anthonys5243 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The install was actually very easy. What you did wrong was you failed to install the alignment nut. I used a level and adjusted the nut until it was perfectly level. Then shut the tire carrier and used that as the template to punch the holes and drill. With it level the bottom screw goes in with ease. Failing to do so the bottom screw will be in a different area making it impossible to put the nut on like in your case. As for the hinges not being big enough I used my old stock lower control arms to pry them bigger just a little so I didn’t have to sand and prevented corrosion. Sorry for your terrible experience. It definitely was a pain in the ass though.

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the comment and insight. The thing is, our kit didn't come with an alignment nut, and the official instructions also did not mention the alignment nut. I knew it existed because I saw it when I researched the carrier, however I assumed it was phased out. In any case, that was just one of the obstacles lol. We basically avoid the trunk now, hopefully get it removed one of these days if you haven't done so check out our wiring video to see how we added a brake light and license light. Cheers

  • @vgullotta
    @vgullotta 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Man, sorry you guys went through all that, that is freakin ridiculous! I 100% agree with you, that is unacceptable to have to grind off the powder coat, and it is unacceptable to have you drill a hole in the body of your Jeep that you then can't even use! And it's in the directions to file down the powder coat????? I've heard a LOT of horror stories with DV8. IMO, any company that will spend all that time and money to perfectly laser cut their logo right into the center of your bumper for the world to see, but can't get the brackets and holes to line up, is a company that only cares about form and doesn't give a damn about function. Thanks for the honest review!

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment and kind words! It's a bummer, we really like the way it looks. Even the replacement part was useless.

    Hi guys... really enjoy your video reviews. Binched-watched a bunch of them. However, here are a few things I would have done differently. (Monday AM QB)
    1) Take all measurements, mark screwholes without the heavy tire on. The tire put weight on the rack, giving you false hole locations
    2) Dont use a dremel, use an angle grinder
    3) dont punch holes, just mark them with a spring loaded center punch
    3) you should never have to file anything with a finish, it will rust. I believe you had to do that because (1) - things were not lined up.
    Sorry it didnt go well. It looked promising.

  • @dwizl7213
    @dwizl7213 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    1 dropped the ball & got this Genright knockoff myself & fortunately I didn't have as many issues as you did. I'm not suggesting it's user error but more like quality control. I had issues with the passenger side. I filed down the mount & rubber bushing but then spray painted the bare metal. I understand why you feel as if you shouldn't have to do so but why would you leave bare steel exposed & expect it not to rust? That's a no brainer. I got lucky with driver's side, everything lined up. Not quite sure how you weren't able to get all the bolts to pass through, I didn't encounter that problem. They could replace the driver's side mount a dozen times but if the the dimensions on the carrier itself are off then all the mounts in the world aren't going to make a difference. All said n done, DV8 is junk. I've sinced replaced it with an EVO body mount carrier which is a God send! That DV8 carrier was the last thing I installed anything on my Jeep that isn't Made in the USA & anything that wasn't prior to that has also been replaced. That's why I have no pity for anyone that has issues with junk that was made over seas, especially no name Amazon/eBay stuff. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. There was a time when DV8 showed promise for those that didn't have a bottomless build budget but ever since they got bought out by Drake Automotive Group, everything went downhill from there. DV8 is the new Smittybilt.

    Always remember to spray coat any drilled or grinded parts of vehicles...prevents rusting. In your case it probably was a defective bracket. I would of made sure all aligned well before attempting to put together. At your stage , I probably would of used a mini vice to pry open the bracket just a weeee bit.

    I realize this is 3 years old, I think you have had a lot of growth in working on your Jeeps, but if you look back, there is several things you could have done differently. Use an angle grinder to cut the pins on the hinges and not trying to align the bracket with the tire mounted to the carrier. Just my 2 cents.

    I stumbled upon this channel and can both relate to and appreciate the mistakes, struggles, learn-as-you-go lessons, and victories. By the way... I mounted that bumper on two of my JKUs but both kits came with the complete hinges. So, I'm not clear why you had to retrofit yours. That said, my experience with DV8 has been hit-or-miss. I also removed the pieces (including welded brackets) that look like metal webbing and in my opinion, it had a cleaner look.

I install this on mine and it all went together with out any real issues. i did have a plate that went inside the body on the drivers side to sandwich the body, I didn't see you put one in there. My questions is how many issues do you have with your tail lights? because of the way they hook on one side and then screw on the other but the brackets on both sides are wider than the space inside the tail lights. I do love my tire carrier though.

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Their official instructions do not include the alignment nut and it did not come with our kit. The alignment is not our problem, it's that the two receiving ends of the bracket don't align with the carrier when installed.

    • @zdrambo0
      @zdrambo0 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Garage Couple you’re right, it doesn’t explicitly state to install the nut. There is a photo of it in Step 10, then it references the adjustment for aligning the carrier to the bracket in Step 22. If your kit didn’t come with the black alignment nut, I would be upset too. Another tip, if you want to go back and mess with it, is tap out the bushing sleeves in the carrier bushing where the pins go and shave them down one or two mm.

    While this carrier may not be perfect, I knew installation issues were going to happen once you broke a taillight. • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. It didn't come with the cam, also didn't come with the license plate bracket or the reinforcement plate. The pdf that comes with the kit did not mention the cam. Yes, instructions sound clear, installation is a whole other issue. Our issue had nothing to do with the alignment cam. The bracket is not compatible with the carrier and requires heavy modification to work. Posted this on various pages and got a wealth of others experiencing all the same issues, let alone the issue of not being able to use all 5 bolts for the bracket.

    • @dytrdr5

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And also, attaching the carrier to the hinge bracket was so absurdly, ridiculously difficult that it required an insane amount of force, which happened to cause the carrier to hit the tail light. If the carrier slipped in, it wouldn't have happened. I had to shave down that bracket for about 30 minutes before it would even remotely slide in with max force. Instructions say 30 minute install time and looks clear, but its horrible design and doesn't go in as described.

    So I want to preface the following statement by saying I wouldn’t install a DV8 product on my Jeep for no reason. I have always thought of their product as cheap imported crap. I have yet to be proven wrong. But.... that being said I have to say that you guys did not help yourselves at all attempting this install. It was well above your mechanical abilities and if you had this installed by a competent installer a lot of these issues would have been handled easily and you would have been far happier with the outcome.
    By the way... the info DV8 provided you saying you only need 2 bolts is a giant load of dog crap! And all the washers you have behind the lock plate is eventually going to stress the thin body sheet metal and pull through. You should have a fab shop or someone take a look and clean up your mistakes before you are really screwed. And one last thing... if you file off a little powdercoating, just paint the surface! No one said you had to leave it bare.

    • @Garagecouple
      @Garagecouple  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment! I disagree that it is above us mechanically. The parts wouldn't even work with one another *off the vehicle* getting everything to line up while *on the vehicle* proved to be impossible. We intentionally made this video installing the carrier to show others who are not experts that it could be done. We know lousy products when we see them and this one was no exception. With missing parts in the bag, missing backing plate, having to get a second bracket sent to us which was still warped during welding.. (by the way, when we called the person on the phone said it's not uncommon the brackets warp due to welding..)
      In any case, yes, I am going to make my own bracket because currently we barely use the trunk. It has become so incredibly intolerable to open and close it. We are also considering reverting to a tire carrier bumper. Anyways, we don't recommend this product. There are better versions out there.
